Missed Opportunity is a lost piece of history. It's like
a message in a bottle that's been tossed out to sea.
It is time to locate a destination. This week, we're
putting focus on my missed opportunity with singer-songwriter Brian Olson.
Brian Olson. You know the name. You probably still know
the face. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, but living in Lincoln, Nebraska.
He learned early on in his life that to be
part of the musical path, it required a pursuit for
dreams that involved odd jobs and the payoff, an unexpected
call to join the rock band Newsboys. Oh, yeah. Brian
Olson was signed to play guitar for this international tour,
and it didn't take his focus off VOTA, V-O-T-A, his
own band known for supporting various causes, including school shooting
victims and fighting against human trafficking. This dude is really
into human effort and bringing peace to other people's lives.
The band Voda recorded music designed for the causes, raising
over $ 80, 000, part of those proceeds going toward saving the
lives of nearly 700 women in Nepal. As Brian grew
closer to 50, he knew it was time to fully
activate his ambitions, which led him straight to NBC's The Voice. Now,
the invitation to share a conversation with Brian Olson arrived
on March 20th, 2024, over two years ago. Less than
12 hours later, my name appeared next to Brian's name.
And then it was gone. He became a missed opportunity. Hmm.
He was the very first voice that everybody was talking
about when it came to the brand new season of
NBC's The Voice. From the very beginning, Bryan set himself
apart from the others. A blistering blind audition, becoming the
very first artist of the season, number 25, to earn
the coveted playoff pass. It gifted him with a chance
to skip the knockout rounds. And once he returned to
the live show, he didn't let anyone down. His goal
was to make Africa from the band Toto his own song.
When the performance ended, every judge was on his side.

when it comes to creating a full journey right now?
The competition seems a lot more like a collaboration here
in 2024. What is this like to be with so
many creative people that are pretty much on the same
level you are or you're learning new things? Making a difference.
This is in your heart pretty deep, dude. Making that
difference in life starts with self. How did you do it? Okay,
you got the call. Joining the news, boys. I know
you still feel it deep inside your soul. I mean,
that was an international tour. Talk to me about VOTA, V-O-T-A,
and I spell it out because I want listeners to
go and Google you. VOTA. This has got to be
one of the greatest things that I've ever heard of
with you supporting the community rather than vice versa, the
community supporting you. Where do you see music growing to?
Because we are in this AI generation and there are
a lot of fake songs out there. Being part of
this modern day music scene inside some of the craziest times.
As a songwriter, what are you feeling? You didn't let
a separation of low moments take you down. You've learned
how to get back up on your feet and wipe
the dirt off your knees. Growing up in Hartford, Connecticut,
then moving to Lincoln, Nebraska. That's a culture change. What
did you learn musically? Being part of of Team John Legend.
You know he's all about speaking from the soul and
you already have that nailed. What are you learning from
this little connection together that is going to further everything
in Voda as well as your own personal life? We
got to talk about PostNBC's The Voice. How do you
expect to promote yourself? Are you digging in deep? Are
you hiring people? How is it that you're going to
find yourself on the upper level of the next journey?
And the final question, creative determination. It's very real with you.
