Episode 2235 - Dressy: Quick, Clean, Superfood-Driven Salad Dressings

Welcome to another special episode of the Ash Said It Show. Today, we are shaking things up literally. I am super excited to sit down with Dressy co-founder and culinary wizard Lauren McDuffie. She came to spill all the tea on Dressy.

We talked about how she and her cousin Rachel Albers flipped the script on the grocery store aisle. We all know the struggle. You spend hours making a gorgeous salad. Then, you ruin it with a sad, over-processed bottled dressing. Lauren shared her hilarious kitchen epiphany.

That exact moment sparked a massive entrepreneurial journey. She gave us an unfiltered look at bootstrapping a startup. We talked about securing a trademark in a dream. We chatted about running a successful Kickstarter campaign. She even detailed the wild roadblocks of manufacturing and recipe testing.

Then, she broke down the magic behind Dressy. They make brilliant shelf-stable dressing concentrates. You just add water and one fresh fridge staple. You get a superfood-packed dressing in under sixty seconds. We talked about her flagship and limited-edition flavors.

Those include Hello, Ranch, Green Goodness, and Sundress. She explained why they refused to cut corners. They teamed up with real chefs and food scientists. They kicked all the nasty artificial junk right to the curb.

At the same time, they kept that ultimate crave factor alive. Are you a fellow entrepreneur? Are you trying to launch your own dream hustle? Maybe you are just a busy home cook. You probably want dinner to taste amazing without the hassle.

Either way, you are going to love this chat. Tap that play button right now. We are proving a major point today.

🏝The Ash Said It Show: A G

Speaker 1: Hey, Lauren.

Speaker 2: Hey.

Speaker 3: Hello again.

Speaker 4: Yes.

Speaker 1: Welcome back to the show. We love it when people

come back, especially with new brands.

Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.

Speaker 3: Thank you for having me again.

Speaker 1: So let's talk about the inspiration. Where did Dressy come from?

Speaker 2: Oh, the origin story.

Speaker 4: Okay, so Jurassic was born, I think, from a frustration of.

Speaker 3: Mine, honestly.

Speaker 4: Let's see, it was fall of 2024, and I was working.

Speaker 2: I work as a food photographer, and I.

Speaker 3: Was photographing a cookbook.

Speaker 4: And this book was, it was specifically, it was an

empanadas book, but that's really neither here nor there. But

I had to style all of these recipes, and a

lot of them called for salad dressings, like bottled dressings

from the store. They were part of these recipes, so

I had to go buy a ton of them in

order to do the shoots.

Speaker 2: And I think that's where I had sort of the aha.

Speaker 3: Moment, like, oh. This part of the grocery store is

not the best. It's just kind of dated. There's a

sameness to it. And the flavor is always just okay.

There are definitely some.

Speaker 4: Brands out there that are better than others. But across

the board, I was like, you know, I wonder.

Speaker 3: If there's some space here to kind of.

Speaker 4: Innovate a little bit or maybe modernize the category. So

that's kind of where it started was just the problem

that I noticed.

Speaker 3: Yeah.

Speaker 1: So from you having this idea, you know, on a

shoot to actually what what was the process like for

you as you were developing flavors or what was the

first flavor that you developed?

Speaker 4: Yeah, so that, honestly, that's my favorite part of the

whole process. My co-founder, her name's Rachel, and she's actually

my cousin, and we live 10 minutes away from each other.

Speaker 3: So it's been really fun to get to work on

this with.

Speaker 2: Her, and I don't want to speak for her, but

I think she would agree.

Speaker 3: That the most fun part has definitely.

Speaker 4: Been the flavor development, because we partnered with Oregon State,

and they have a really cool program.

Speaker 3: It's like a food they call it. A lot of, um,

land grant universities actually have things like this.

Speaker 2: Um, and so we were able to go into.

Speaker 4: A lab and work with food scientists, um, to, to

develop our formulas and our flavors, like from the ground up.

Speaker 3: So that was very, very cool experience.

Speaker 4: It was just so much fun to pretend we were scientists.

Speaker 2: Whenever we would go in and do that.

Speaker 4: Um, and so that's kind of where we developed our flavors.

I mean, I started by just making dressings in my

kitchen that I really liked. Um, and then I took

those into the lab with our chef slash scientist and,

and we developed dry versions from there because our, our

first product line is a mix, um, or it's a

three different flavors of salad dressing mix.

Speaker 3: So they're not liquid. So the trick was kind of.

Speaker 4: Reverse engineering that. Like, how do we capture these flavors

that I love.

Speaker 3: In the dry format?

Speaker 2: So that was kind of the challenge.

Speaker 4: And I knew, I don't know if it's because I

lived in Indiana for a long time, but.

Speaker 3: I love ranch. I can't help it.

Speaker 4: I do.

Speaker 2: And so does Rachel. So we started with that. And

then the other two flavors kind of grew from there.

Speaker 1: Wow. That is incredible. I am loving that. And you

definitely kind of brushed over briefly the The dressings that

are at the supermarket, you look at them, they're full

of seed oils and refined sugars and a whole bunch

of extra stuff that we don't need in our bodies.

But how do you feel that dressy kind of bridges

the gap between nourishment and also a great salad?

Speaker 4: So bridging the gap is really kind of the goal.

I wanted to provide something that solves kind of three problems.

Speaker 3: Like people are really busy, right? Like everybody I know

is busy. So I wanted to.

Speaker 4: provide something that's it's a convenience product but convenience products

get a bad rap.

Speaker 2: Typically because usually usually that means you.

Speaker 4: Have to compromise something whether that's flavor or like the

nutrition of it all and so we work pretty hard um.

Speaker 2: To satisfy those sort of.

Speaker 3: Three points when we're thinking about the stuff we're making.

Speaker 4: Um so yeah we try to bridge like that gap

between What you want from a homemade, like a scratch-made

dressing is so delicious.

Speaker 3: The flavor is the.

Speaker 2: Best, and you can control the ingredients.

Speaker 4: But it's not quite as convenient to have to procure

all the ingredients to make a scratch-dressing, chop and drop

and all of that, and then you have to actually

make the salad itself.

Speaker 2: So it can be a little bit more cumbersome.

Speaker 4: Mm-hmm. So we're bridging the gap between, like, the convenience

of it and then what you want from, like, a

flavor and health perspective.

Speaker 2: So, yeah, it's kind of connecting all of those things.

Speaker 1: Yes, I love that because I'm, as you said, as

you already know, I'm a busy chick, too. So all

the time we're trying to do what we're supposed to

do and eat healthy. And I find myself now, like,

even just when I have a salad, I'll just usually

sprinkle it with some lemon juice or something. I'll have, like,

a fresh lemon just to give it some flavor, some punch.

Because I look at these ingredients, at these salad dressings

that I used to love growing up. And I'm like, oh,

my God, this is my favorite. And you look at

what's in them today and you're like, this wasn't in

there when I was a kid. And now we have

all these additional things. So the way that you guys

kind of making yourself kind of like the middleman to

where we don't have to make our salad dressings from scratch.

Nobody wants to do that.

Speaker 4: Is it convenient?

Speaker 2: Is it great?

Speaker 1: It's a healthy thing to do. And I'm sure everybody

would love to do that. But we don't have the time.

So you guys have been bridging it in between and

making it so that we can still have that salad

that we love, but not spend two, three, ten hours

making the salad dressing from scratch. So I tip my

hat to you guys. You guys have figured that out.

Speaker 3: Thank you.

Speaker 2: Thank you.

Speaker 3: Yeah, that's been the idea.

Speaker 4: And I'm with you.

Speaker 2: I was getting in the habit of just doing, like,

oil and.

Speaker 4: Vinegar every day, just like you said, a little punch,

which is great, but it gets bad.

Speaker 2: Boring after a while.

Speaker 4: Yeah and so that's kind of part of the idea

is we want to keep putting new things out there

so it can not be quite so boring but it's

you don't have to worry about the.

Speaker 1: Ingredients definitely so what are some of the flavor offerings

that you guys.

Speaker 4: Have right now Yeah, okay, so we have Hello Ranch,

so that's our sort of flagship classic ranch, which, like

I said, I lived in Indiana for a little while,

and that is like the Mecca for ranch, the motherland,

and so we wanted to make sure we had something

to offer, and it is super food-infused, so our mixes

actually make your salads healthier, which is.

Speaker 3: sort of fun.

Speaker 2: So we started by developing the ranch, but then from.

Speaker 3: There, I wanted to kind of tip.

Speaker 4: My hat to a classic green goddess dressing. Ours is

called Green Goodness, and it's also infused with like real

greens and botanicals and herbs and.

Speaker 2: Spices, and it's really flavorful.

Speaker 4: In fact, I think that might be the favorite right now.

We're getting all the reviews back from people, and.

Speaker 2: People seem to really like that one, so that's fun.

Speaker 4: And then our third flavor, which was just a limited

edition summer flavor, was called Sundress. And essentially that was

our berry style or berry vinaigrette style dressing, which I

don't know if you've ever had a bottle of like store-bought.

Speaker 2: Kind of gloopy, sticky, saccharine, like berry vinaigrette.

Speaker 3: It's not the best.

Speaker 2: No, at all.

Speaker 4: Yeah, they can be a little funky.

Speaker 2: So, yeah, this is our more savory take on that.

Speaker 3: And it's been really fun. It's been really good. And

people seem to have liked it, but it's phasing out

pretty soon. It's coming to the end of its run.

Speaker 4: And we have a fourth flavor that's getting ready to

drop next month called The Med.

Speaker 3: And it is a Mediterranean vinaigrette, which has been really

fun to make.

Speaker 2: That one's really good.

Speaker 3: And it goes with everything, so.

Speaker 4: Yes.

Speaker 1: Okay. So I'm going to give you a scenario. So

we've got, maybe we've got a stay at home mom, right?

She's got these kids dancing around. She wants to get

some salads and stuff in her diet, in her routine

or whatever the case is. Walk her through getting some dressy,

maybe the ranch. She gets the ranch. She orders from

you guys site. And what's the next step for her

and dressy?

Speaker 4: So the way that you create a bottle of our dressing,

it's very user-friendly. So each pouch that we have, you

buy it by the pouch, and each pouch has three

packets inside, and each packet basically makes a cup worth

of dressing. So you tear open the packet, and you

only have to add.

Speaker 3: One thing to it to bring it to life, plus water.

So it's meant to be.

Speaker 2: Really quick and easy.

Speaker 4: You can pull together a packet of Dressy in like

30 seconds. So depending on what you like, let's say

you're making the ranch, you can combine it.

Speaker 2: With just mayonnaise, which is what I do, which keeps

it pretty classic.

Speaker 4: Or if you want to make it a little lighter

and get a little protein boost, you could use Greek

yogurt or a combination of both.

Speaker 3: It's pretty flexible that way. Kind of gives you a

little bit of control back.

Speaker 2: But again, it's really quick. So you just stir it together.

You can add.

Speaker 4: We suggest how much water to add, but you can

add as much or as little as you like to

get it to the consistency that you want.

Speaker 2: And that's it.

Speaker 1: I love the fact that that's so user-friendly and people

can just kind of customize their own stuff.

Speaker 4: I love that. Yes.

Speaker 3: You totally can customize it. That's the word.

Speaker 2: I like that. Yeah.

Speaker 1: That is awesome. So, Lauren, if people want to get

some more information or possibly see what you guys have

up next, and, of course, get dressy, where do they

need to go?

Speaker 3: Yeah. So our website is trydressy.com.
