April 7 - Texas History
Speaker 1: This is today in Texas history. On this day, April seventh.
In nineteen thirteen, Sam Rayburn took the oath of office
as a member of the United States House of Representatives.
He became Majority leader in nineteen thirty seven and was
elected Speaker of the House in nineteen forty, a post
he held until his death in nineteen sixty one. Rayburn
helped negotiate the Roosevelt Garner ticket in nineteen thirty two
and loyally supported the New Deal. As chairman of the
Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committees in the nineteen thirties, he
oversaw legislation that established the Securities and Exchange Condition and
the Federal Communications Commission. During World War II, he helped
insure the legislative base and financial support for the warrior
and in the nineteen fifties he worked closely with Senate
Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson. Ravern served in the House for
more than forty eight years. I bet you didn't know
that that was today in Texas history.
