April 9 - Texas History

Speaker 1: This is today in Texas history. On this day, April ninth.

In nineteen sixty five, the Houston Astros played the New

York Yankees in exhibition baseball in the Astronaut, the first

event in the New Dome Stadium. The Astrodome, the first

fully air conditioned, enclosed, multi purpose sports stadium in the world,

was first approved by voters in nineteen eighty eight. Roy

Hawfins had led in the development. Over the years, it

was the home stadium of the Houston Astros and the

Houston Olders, among other teams. Had also hosted such varied

entertainments as bullfighting, rodeos, and in nineteen ninety two, the

Republican National Convention. I bet you didn't know that that

was today in Texas history.
