April 13 - Texas History

Speaker 1: This is today in Texas history. On this day, April

thirteenth and seventeen o nine, an expedition reached the site

of what is now the city of San Antonio and

named the nearby springs San Pedro Springs. Two Franciscan fathers

escorted by fifteen Mexican soldiers, had hoped to befriend the

Tajas Indians on what is now the Colorado River. The

expedition reached the Colorado on May the nineteenth, but discovered

that the home of the Tajas was still three days

journey away. Because the soldiers' orders did not authorize them

to proceed farther, and because they learned that the Tejas

were not well disposed towards the Spanish, the expedition then

returned to the Rio Grande. I bet you didn't know

that that was today in Texas history.
