On today's show Donnie and Rick chat about a beautiful goal by Ivar Stenberg over at the World Championship's and Montreal's loss to Carolina last night.

Joining the show is Brandon Astle (18:40) and Craig Button (49:20).

Speaker 1: Check Podcasts.

Speaker 2: Thanks for listening to the Donnie and Dolly podcast. Catch

the show Monday through Fudday, ten am to noon on Check.

Speaker 3: I think you're gonna want to hear this.

Speaker 2: Your local sports coverage lives here.

Speaker 4: Two nothing. It's Alva not so fast cohole breath with

Don Taylor. I say that the winner of the draft

lottery should be the winner of a two man loose.

Speaker 1: And Rick Dolly Wall I had a cherry tree up

Little Ricky. I used to go up that tree and

just sit there for hours and munch on those jury years.

Speaker 2: Donnie and Dolly.

Speaker 4: Ten o'clock at Downtown Vancouver. We're the Paul Carson Studio.

Thanks for tuning in, folks. It's Donnie and Dolly the

team on Check. Don Taylor, along with Rick Dolly Wall.

Ryan Henderson is our producer. He's the man at the

controls now the father of two. Our director. The voice

of God is Derek wan Hourry lovely.

Speaker 1: Couldn't be better.

Speaker 4: Grab bag to talk about today? Yeah, a lot to

talk about. We're going to start with Shockingly, hockey Sweden

has defeated Slovakia four to two today over in Switzerland

at the World Ice Hockey Championships Double I.

Speaker 1: HF.

Speaker 4: Canada plays the checks later today. I'm not sure if

that game was started. But Sweden Slovakia four to two,

and would you take a look at what happened? I

mean the Caducks pick third overall at the June NHL draft,

and of course there's a thought that maybe Sweden's ivers

Stenberg could be available. Take a look at what he

was up to today. This is with the score two

to one Sweden over Slovakia in the second period. And

would you look at that move? Would you look at

that shot? Would you look at that speed, the skill

of the confidence, It's all there. Look at Matt Sendeen. Oh,

Matt Sendeen, Grand Puba of the Toronto May plays now

in attendance. Lord knows what he was thinking looking at this.

I mean, breaking the ankles of the defender. Just absolutely tremendous,

putting on a display at a significant tournament like that,

something special.

Speaker 1: Rick eighteen years old, Okay, and Donny, this isn't a

preliminary game against a great Britain. This is what is

his quarterfinals. This is a pretty significant round yeah, round robe,

It's a pretty significant game. It's later in the tournament.

It's not early when you're playing the week teams. This

kid right here, I have no idea where he's going.

You talk to numerous scouts, like, this year's top five

is all over the map. Don, Some team's got Stenbourg

at one, some got them at two, Some got McKenna

at one, mckenn at two. Maholter is climbing at a

rapid pace. You talk to different scouts and there's no

one guy that we know automatically is going to go first. Overall,

we just don't have right now. Like Macklin Celebrini when

he went first, overall we knew he was going to

go first. Even Badard, we knew Badard was going to

go first. But this, this top five, it's all over

the map, Don, it's all over the map.

Speaker 4: Lord knows what Matt Senden was thinking. There is Daniel

Sedine still over in Switzerland at the Worlds. From what

you know.

Speaker 1: I don't have the answer to that. We all know

that Daniel went to the Worlds, not.

Speaker 4: That you have to be there. You have to be

impressed by that.

Speaker 1: You can watch the video exactly. A lot of scouts

they're divided. Some are at the World some are at

Kelowna for the Memorial cop But this kid, I when

you talk to scouts, they think he's the most ready

to play next year in the NHL.

Speaker 4: Well, I think, why is it? And people out there

on TV and podcast line, you can help me out here?

Why is it? And I think I know the answer,

But why is it that I feel that? And look,

I'm a can and people hate it when Canadians say

Canadians hate it when Canadians say this, I'd love to

see the Canucks have more Canadians on their roster. So

if Gavin McKenna is there, you grab him right, But

why is it? I'm okay now if they draft. Having

said all that, I'm okay. If they take Iversendberg, a

Swede and they have a history of a roster chock

full of Swedes, you know, since the Graadeens and lynn

Gren and since Grideen and lind Gren and Zadostrom going

way back back to the eighties, I'm okay with it.

Because Daniel Henrik and Ryan Johnson are in charge, I

just have way more confident. I mean, they don't have

a Swedish general manager, but they have two Swedish presidents now.

But I don't really care about that because I have

so much confidence. I just love the way they come across.

I'm okay with that as a fan. As a fan,

I'm okay with it. The other thing with Stenberg is

that when you read about him, when you hear scouts

talk about him, and you I'm gonna go with stereotype

stereotype here. I'm going to generalize here, which you're not

supposed to do. But the general thinking is that Stenberg

plays more like a stereotypical Canadian and McKenna plays more

like a stereotypical suite. Right, So maybe maybe you don't

want to take a Swedish player, but how about a

Swedish player that plays like an old school Canadian, which.

Speaker 1: You love absolutely Stanburgh. Canucks don't have enough Canadians on

the roster. It's embarrassing how low the number is. And

look they got Coots, Company's a good Canadian kid. But listen, uh,

the biggest decision that Canucks have to make at three

down do you draft for position or do you draft

best player?

Speaker 4: Did you hear what I said? Just like Sanburg plays

more like a Canadian, So I think it's a big deal.

Speaker 1: Doug Down I'm talking center where the Canucks are week

Mahultra is sitting right there. If he's available, three got

your brother, take the best you take the best player,

You got your centerman. They did it three years ago

Willander Benson. They took Willander because he's a positional. You

don't like Benson because he's stop stop. The Caducks thought

he was too small in his draft here, which is ridiculous.

But the Benson kid, there's your prime example. When you

go for position, you get burned. They got burned by

not take You're saying go for position, but not saying anything.

I'm telling you, what should they do with number three?

Positionally take the centerment because they're weak at center, or

take the best player available, which would be, well.

Speaker 4: Be the best thing to do, you know, in a

perfect world would be and they need to help with center.

Ice would be the feeling that Maholt was the best

player available and oh he just happens to play center

and center that's outstanding. Then then you deal with the

issue of the possibility of Manny his dad being being

the head coach that that falls into the category of

a pleasant prom But everything I've seen of Stanberg, you

know he looks aggressive, skillful, fast, more NHL. Ready you

said it yourself, some scouts, I don't think again, I

would have more a problem if I felt that the

other regime was in charge versus Daniel Henrick and Ryan

Johnson who seemed.

Speaker 1: To okay, but hold it, I'm gonna seem.

Speaker 4: To know what they're doing. I'm gonna fight you balance early.

I'm gonna fight back on your regime thing.

Speaker 1: It's the scouts. It's the same scouts that took Lakaramaki

and took Wellander. It's the same scouts who are gonna

make this pick on what is the regime got to

do with that up up high? When it's the scouts.

Speaker 4: Because they may ultimately they make the decisions.

Speaker 1: Okay, Well, the scouts play a huge role. You're the regally.

Speaker 4: I didn't know.

Speaker 1: Okay, But why are you saying the regime the regime changed,

but the scouts have remained the same, The same scouts

that took lakara Maacki and pick Wilander over Benson are

your saying?

Speaker 4: So you're saying that Ryan Johnson and the Sedines will

have no say at all. Well, I'm not saying, so

why why would Daniel Sedine go over to Switzerland?

Speaker 1: Then okay, of course why is mat why you? Why

is Madsenden there? They all want to see the top

verst But what what are they doing over there? And

who's you know, what they're doing over there? Rick?

Speaker 4: They're scouting scouting?

Speaker 1: But whose opinion? Who has seen more of Stamburg and

Maholtzra than anybody? More than Ryan Johnson and the twins

the scouts?

Speaker 4: But ultimately the ultimate decision comes down to I would

think the presidents and I'm still getting used to saying

that president and and the GM.

Speaker 1: Yeah, I And they're going to ask for advice from

the scouts. What do you think they've got the most views?

It's the same scouts done well?

Speaker 4: What about like what about the thought like like that?

What's going to happen to the scouting department after the drafts?

Right there? Was they talk about there's still going to

be Jim Mutherford talked to him, Jim Rutherford still an advisor,

that they're still going to use Patrick Alvine's notes and

research that he used when he was still employed by

the Canucks.

Speaker 1: Well, and there you go. There was a rumor last

night in Coloonna. I talked to a scout who said

he heard that the Canucks re up to with Todd Harvey.

I haven't got that confirmed. I'm looking into it. But

there's your answer. If there's a rumor going around Coloonna.

I haven't got it confirmed, so don't before.

Speaker 4: All these how would that make you feel?

Speaker 1: Well? So again, I'd be surprising. I think I was

told that if Evan Gold came to Vancouver there was

going to be multiple, multiple, multiple changes. And now that

Ryan Johnson got it, it seems like they're running back

with the same crew. Everybody. Everybody got to keep their job, and.

Speaker 4: So it's just scept for Patrick Elvin j Ruth.

Speaker 1: But it seems like the Twins and Ryan Johnson want

to keep everybody done the same crew.

Speaker 4: Why are you so anti Iverstenberg? Why? I just said,

I haven't even said anything about plays like a Canadian?

Speaker 1: That's fine. Has he dropped the gloves because Canadians dropped gloves?

Don I don't know if he's dropped the gloves, but anyways, how.

Speaker 4: Many players dropped the gloves these days? Well?

Speaker 1: Well we saw a fight at the Memorial Cup last night.

Well we're gonna get to that. We're gonna get to

that beautiful fight. Two Canadian boys fighting at the Memorial Cup.

There's nothing better. But anyways, I'm not saying anything about Stamberg.

I'm just telling you nicely done that at pick three.

If Stemberg's available, Mahultra is available right now. Last time

I checked, the Canucks have Maultra ranked higher than Steenberg.

So take that for what you.

Speaker 4: Okay, we want to get to the how are you Ryan?

But by the way, getting a lot of sleep there

with the boy.

Speaker 3: I was just asleep right now. So I don't know

what you guys are saying.

Speaker 4: Are you saying this conversation?

Speaker 1: No, No, it's fine.

Speaker 4: Should we get to the polar I agree with what

Dolly was saying.

Speaker 5: Well, you like you're saying that there's gonna be this

massive change in philosophy because there's a new GM and President.

Speaker 3: No I did President's sorry.

Speaker 4: I just said that I have more confidence in these

three gentlemen then the two people they replaced. That's all

I'm saying.

Speaker 5: But so, but okay, and man, it's just a feel,

you know, I go. But always comes down to that,

It always comes down to that.

Speaker 4: If people saw how we prepare for the show. They well,

that's not the way to do it.

Speaker 1: I am.

Speaker 5: I am very impressed with you, by the way, because

you used a hip happening term when you were talking

about that Stamber goal that he broke the defenseman's ankles.

Speaker 3: So that's good for you.

Speaker 1: That's been around for decades, not decades.

Speaker 5: He's right, No, it hasn't been around for decades.

Speaker 4: It has at least you.

Speaker 1: Were not around in the seventies and eighties, like Donnie

saying that in the seventies in the eighties.

Speaker 4: And it's a basketball term.

Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, when you know Jimmy shammy a guy going

shammy a guy, Yeah, you break hisself. He felt well,

he didn't even fall. He kind of just he was

like a figure skating movie.

Speaker 4: He ended up on the ice.

Speaker 3: He fell, Yeah, but he did like a purette.

Speaker 4: Okay, there's matts.

Speaker 1: I don't know about those glasses, by the way, But

then you mean that's be on the point at least.

Speaker 4: With a horrible choice based on Matt Suendean's glasses. But

look at that.

Speaker 3: I mean, that's it's ridiculous.

Speaker 4: Skill and that's a high level tournament. No matter what

you think of the World Championships, not the Olympics, not

best on best eight Pointsberg's points at this tournament.

Speaker 1: That's pretty significant.

Speaker 4: When you look at the leading scorers, it's not chock

full of household names.

Speaker 3: Well, who's the leading score of the tournament right now?

Speaker 4: Spend Aggreghetti of Switzerland really is the leading score six games,

four goals, nine assist, thirteen points. Lucas Kraeman's see you

free agent?

Speaker 1: Can the Cocks bring him in?

Speaker 4: Tied with Sandas Filmanis of Latvia.

Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it's just two hours off you running

down some of these names.

Speaker 4: Yeah, ok, yeah, let's let's let's get to the point.

I want to talk a bit about what happened in

the National Hockey League last night. So many people down

in the playoffs right now? Am I the only one

that was? I was entertained last night. I watched from

the anthems Claude de Meal.

Speaker 1: With the torch entertained.

Speaker 4: Is a close game? Went to overtime? Two games in

a row went to overtime. But guys like Ryan, the

NBA playoffs are way better now. You want They're very good.

You want seven to six scores. It's not happening at

this time of the year.

Speaker 5: If it's a Carolina and Vegas, I'll give you the

final versus a Knicks OKC slash Spurs final.

Speaker 4: Well, I think it has to be Spurs to capture

everyone's Look.

Speaker 5: I don't know, the champ going to a second final

with the m v P. The Spurs are more entertaining

because of I get to be I.

Speaker 4: Know, I got a once in a lifetime I know,

once forever player.

Speaker 1: I know.

Speaker 3: But people like that defending champion, back to backstory.

Speaker 4: And a lot of people and look, the Knicks Calves

was horrible. It was all four game sweet, but a

lot of what's going on right now when you've got

these people who I don't know if they enjoy being Canadian,

the people who hate hockey that on the NBA playoffs

are wait, but they think pride in that of what's

going on right now has to do with this New York.

New York has advanced to the NBA Finals. And I'll

go back to ninety four before when the Rangers and

Canucks rented and Sports Illustrated had the famous or infamous cover.

You know, hockey is hot or the NHL NBA is

not it has to do with New York. I'm sorry.

It tends to run things in North America. So there's that.

But it look if it's Wamby versus the next well

that's that's pretty special versus Vegas and Carolina, which looks

like it's going to be. But I getting back to

the original, the root of the conversation. I've been entertained

by these last two games overtime in hockey playoffs?

Speaker 1: Are you kidding me? Who turns the TV off? Nobody?

Speaker 4: Yeah? And part of it was it was frustrating, how

come they can't get any shots? Now? Having said that,

start of overtime last night, what happened Nick, Suzuki, break

versus where you roll the visuals? Well, I don't know.

Speaker 5: Yesterday Eric world divisions and you were all over him

because he didn't know what.

Speaker 1: So now I think you got to wait for all

the cues.

Speaker 4: But this is, you know again, they're getting no shots?

What do they have twelve shots at this point? Wow, Suzuki,

you know, arguably best play can't hit the net on

a breakaway? Hard to criticize him.

Speaker 3: I got a beef, by the way, and.

Speaker 4: Then Matheson hits the crossbar, not long after this.

Speaker 1: Why are crossbars in goal posts not a shot on goal?

Speaker 5: This is literally, Yeah, it's literally it's a shot on the.

Speaker 4: Net because the way I always play when I was

two years old is that if the goaltender moved out

of the way, it would it still wouldn't. It wouldn't

wouldn't be a goal. So it's not a shot on it.

Speaker 1: How many saves the goalie makes it? It's a goalie

related Does the goalie make the save when it hits

the cross You made a good point, he had stack.

Speaker 4: Here's what I don't understand, and it is you have

to dig deep to find it. But goalposts and crossbars

should be a stat readily availed. Yes, that's a significant

part of the game. Matheson hit a post and a

crossbar in that game?

Speaker 3: Well for how that how many nerd statistics we have?

Speaker 1: Now?

Speaker 5: That would be some interesting look at this team their

puck cluck this year they led the league in goal

posts or something.

Speaker 1: That'd be an interesting You.

Speaker 4: Can find it, You can find it, but I think

you have to calculate way way too deep.

Speaker 1: Now the case, there's now attempts.

Speaker 4: Right shot at text, which wasn't always a big deal.

So there is that, But I'm with you. I'd like

to see goal post crossbars as a stat that's readily

easily available. I haven't got that. Got way too much

gone on my left. I can't dig that. Yeah, sure,

I got to deal with you guys. We're he's just

a DTMs. Is it just me? Coming up in the

eleven o'clock hour, Craig Button is going to join us

just after eleven o'clock. He's in Colonna, beautiful Colonel. Yeah,

he's paragliding this morning. He'll join us a little bit

later with one of his Nancy shirts. So Craig just

after eleven o'clock as things look very good for the

Kitchen and Rangers down in Corna or over in Colna.

Also Big Rye the quitter guy coming up later this hour,

and up next the voice of the Abbotsford Canucks, Brandon Astell.

He is around the Abbotsford Canucks at all times as

we speak. Right now, he's in the arena, nobody's there

and he's hanging out. But he has noticed over the

last two years what not only what Manny Malholtra has

been up to, but Ryan Johnson and the Sedines when

they go on the ice as part of the development

group or they were anyway with the Abbotsford Canucks and

all the players that have He knows him inside out,

and we'll see what he thinks of the moves the

Canucks have made and possibly will make. When you talk

about Manny Mahultra, Brandon is next. Thanks so much for

tuning in, Folks. Donnie and Dolly the team on check.

so concerned on that goal is because he's scouting the

defender that got his ankle broken. Yes, Ryan, that's a

decades old saying, and a lot of people are back

in Rick and I saying broke his ankles goes way

back to the one. Uh submission here goes back to

the seventies.

Speaker 5: Seventy you say decades. You know decades now, could go

back to like two thousand.

Speaker 3: That's decades.

Speaker 4: Well, this one submission, not that one, but another one

says the seventies. That's that's you know, last time I checked,

that was before the two thousands. You weren't around, you

were born.

Speaker 1: And what I know last.

Speaker 5: Year, I don't even remember hearing you in the nineties,

like I remember hearing you were two years old back then.

Speaker 1: I still remembered. I still remember, But no, I think

this is a post two thousand saying, Okay, what Dwight

and Chilliwac just told you that in his seventies he

remembers late seventies and eighties. I do remember that term too,

breaking ankles, breaking ankles.

Speaker 4: Dwight's telling you right there, I don't know, Hey, you

remember that when you're in what ninety one?

Speaker 1: Yeah? Come on, how would you know anything in the

seventies and eighties? You know anything? You know what? I think?

Speaker 4: Looking at that sende in there, I don't think he

was watching.

Speaker 1: He was on his phone. He was on his phone.

He was on his phone, checkers texting, see that goal?

Speaker 4: The new fangled cell phones?

Speaker 1: Have you found the new coach?

Speaker 4: Brandon Astell, I will join us now voice of the

Abbotsford Connects. Of course, Habittsford to head coach the last

two seasons. Manny Moreholter reportedly negotiations with the Vancouver Connection.

He is Brandon joins us now. Brandon, thanks for doing

the sir, long time, no talk to How are you boys?

Speaker 6: What's going on? I was actually gonna come on here

with hopefully a disparaging picture of Mode is my background?

Just to stand up where you guys weple images. There's

not a single bad picture of the Mode. He's at

the Super Bowl. He's got the cigar in the mouth,

so I couldn't find one.

Speaker 4: Well, you know what, go back if you want to

find a really good picture, go back to the eighties

when he claims he looked like claims he looks like

Tom Selleck.

Speaker 1: Tom Sellick.

Speaker 6: Okay, I'll have to be more specific on my search next.

Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, So Ryan Johnson, the sedines Manny maul Ultra.

Speaker 1: Who's left to run things out there in Habensford? Are

you in charge now? Yeah?

Speaker 6: You know? I boys, I got my phone hand you

right next to me to see if it blows up

anytime soon. But no, it's always a good thing when

not just players are moving up to the big club,

but staff as well. Ryan Johnson, it's done a great

job of building a foundation in Abbotsford, building something that

the guys can be proud of. And part of that

is a highway one wall right next to the locker room.

Outside the locker room, there's a wall dedicated to anybody,

whether your staff or players. If you've been called up

to the big leagues, you get a picture on the

wall in your it's an action shot of you playing

or coaching or like the video coaches on there. With

the trainers on there, it's an action shot of them

on the bench. It's really neat and they're running out

of space. They need to use the wall next to

it next year because that's how many guys, Ryan and

Manny and other coaches in the past have have moved

out to the big club. So just so great to

see RJ and others get their shot.

Speaker 4: And a lot of people will tell you, Brandon, those

photos moving faster than the traffic on Highway One. So

what did you notice, Brandon when it comes to let

let's start here when it comes to you talked about

Ryan Johnson when it comes to the Sadines, what did

you notice about their on ice involvement or just their

involvement in general when it came to the prospects in Absford.

Speaker 6: Yeah, from day one, since I've been there, they have

been very hands on. There's been some times where I

went to go grab the coach at few hours for

the game, but I couldn't get an interview because they're

talking with the Sidenes and I'm not going there to

break up that conversation. So that was kind of starstruck.

I was starstruck, to say the least when that first happened.

But then you see them around the rink all the time,

whether it was in training camp out in Habittsford, Chill Oak,

at practices like if you show up the practice, it

was a very good chance there's a sadeen on the ice.

They're very hands on. They're polling players aside, picking their brain,

giving them tips. I remember there was one college free

agent that signed in the spring and he told me

that like one of the Citians came on the ice

and he nudge one of his teammates. He's like, they

actually like come on here and like help out. Like

he was just so surprised that it was the case.

And that's just what they do. They do it quietly.

They do it in Vancouver, they do it at Abbotsford.

I mean, you can't ask for two better guys to

learn from their hockey. Yelloup Framers. They've been with Vancouver

their entire career, whether as players are in a development role,

you can't find anyone that says a bad thing about them.

Like they're just such incredible people, Like you want your kids,

your son to grow up like them. They're just hard working,

they really put the time in, they really care and

I'm just so happy to see them get this opportunity.

And I know the players feel very comfortable around them.

Like after games, I walk down around a locker room,

the sitings, they're pulling them aside, talking about like a

scenario that happened in the game, whether it was a

two on one or a powerplay situation. I mean, if

you're a player here and that you're going to take

in that information and that is going to be gospels

to see them work so hard behind the scenes and

now they're the two guys calling the shops. It's really cool.

Speaker 1: Last coach to go from the miners to Vancouver, Travis Green.

Now the big question is, and you've been watching him

for two years, now, is he ready Manny Moultra in

your eyes, to be a head coach in the NHL.

Speaker 6: Without a doubt. Reck, Like Ryan Johnson, Nanny is a

tone setter. It was a game changer when Ryan hired

him to become head coach in Abbittsford a few years

ago and came out of left field. I'm sure no

one knew that he was available or what he wanted

to do. Obviously, he was an assistant in Toronto and

Ryan Johnson wanted one guy for the job and he

ended up getting him. And he was just a perfect

fit because Rereck a lot of guys in Abbotsford were

in his shoes when he was a player. Like Manny

was a high peck. He went seventh overall I believe

in ninety eight to the Rangers. And it wasn't all

sunshine and rainbows out of the gates man He played

in three different leagues. A couple of years after his

drafted us in the NHL, Ahl went back to the OHL.

So he struggled trying to navigate what type of player

he was going to be and obviously felt the pressures

of being that top pick and just wasn't really catching

at the pro level. And so he had to make

a decision and find a role for himself, which he

did beautifully, which turned out to be a reliable two

hundred foot center that was tough to play against. And

he brought that binding mentality to the coaching ranks. He

has a lot of characteristics that you look for in

a coach, and it's almost like he's got a He's

like a Swiss army knife. He brings so much to

the table. He's intelligent, he's motivating, he creates a connection

to his players, he brings a lot of structure. The

culture he brings to the table is unreal. He's very personable.

He alast all the wife and kids are doing. He

takes time out of his bag check in on his players,

which you don't see a lot of coaches do nowadays.

Practices are very important. Like if he does get the

role in Vancouver, you're gonna see practice look a lot different,

very fast paced. You're going to see a coach out

there wearing a helmet and advisor. He's taking part of

the drills. He'll be parking at guys if they're not

looking sharp, and you'll hear him use the word process

a lot. He's very processed driven and he wants his

players to stick to the principles that he put in place.

And he's someone that wouldn't do something that he wouldn't

to himself. And like he is still in phenomenal shape,

boys like he is absolutely Jack say with Ryan Johnson,

Like those two guys are in the gym all the time,

they're getting a sweat on, and I can only imagine

what the players think when they peek inside the gym

and see their head coach in GM pumping the iron

on the treadmill, Like that's going to be motivating to

get in there and get a sweat on yourself. So

he's very hands on and there's just been so many

scenarios where I've just been like in off his of

what he's doing on a day to day behind the scenes,

Like for a Sunday game in Abtsford usually at three o'clock.

I'll get to the rink at around eleven am and

who's out there putting the scratches and injured players through

their paces. It's the head coach, Manny Mahotra. And he's

not just blowing a whistle. He's out there taking part

in the drills. He's getting a sweat on with I'm

sure the guys appreciate like he's going into battle with them.

Where a lot of head coaches delegate that those sessions

to the assistants, the head coach would never be seen,

let alone four hours before a game. So he's just

the perfect guy to come in and set a new

foundation in the culture in the locker room. And can't

say enough good things about him.

Speaker 1: What player did he develop?

Speaker 4: Where?

Speaker 1: And went to Vancouver where you said, you know what,

many's responsible for? This guy.

Speaker 6: One. There's a lot that he is responsible for these

last few years. But the one that I just always

stands out as Linas Carlson. Yep, Manny was always someone

that was a big fan of Linus. And when you

look at his game, Rick, he's not the fastest guy

in the world. Yep, he's not the most skilled. Manny

knew what he brought to the table, and that's kind

of the grinding mentality that Manny had. He's in the corners,

he's in front of the net, he's got a very

heavy stick, and most importantly, like he's gonna be one

of the hardest working guys on the ice every single time,

not just in games. The kicker is in practice. That

is when Linis really fine tuned his craft and having

the opportunity for him to work with a guy and

like Manny mount Odre and the scenes, you can see

it really pay off in spades. And I had no

doubt that Lena is going to be a full time NHLer.

And obviously he's a little older than most prospects, right

he's twenty six years old now, so he's not young anymore.

And it was kind of put up for shut up time,

and Linis really took his time in Abbotsford to heart.

He worked hard. He wasn't getting caught up in all

the headlines of guys that are getting called up and

why wasn't he getting the call. He just knew that

if he kept in putting, putting the work in Abbotsford,

that he would get that opportunity. And sure enough, he

had a breakout season in his rookie year. And I

think he's still got a lot to give in a

high ceiling. So Linis is definitely one guy that stands

out that learned a lot from Manny.

Speaker 4: Brandon before we let you go. Everything's been positive with

this conversation. This may be negative what he thinks in

Jonathan Lecromacki's future.

Speaker 6: I'm still very high on his future. This is still

a young guy that has a lot of tools that

not many young guys do. Obviously, we know about the shot.

I think his his hockey IQ and playmaking is a

little bit underrated, and that's still developing in his game.

You look at the numbers down He's put up some

some pretty good stats in the American Hockey League, and

this is a league that is not very kind for

people that want to put up some numbers. He's been

one of the best goal scorers on a team in

the last few years. Obviously, there's parts of his game

like any young player that you got to work on

in his own end battles. Obviously, you got to win

one on one battles more often than not if you're

going to stick in the NHL, and that's something that

he's got to work at. He's been injured a little bit,

and obviously he got shut down early this year in

February to get surgery, so that he's fully prepared to

have a big summer and coming to training camp fully healthy.

And there's two guys that nobody brings to the table

very well, and it's Ryan Johnson and Manny Malhotra. They

know how to get the best out of him. And

like Manny's early career, it hasn't been all sunshine and rainbows.

But when Jonathan is on his game, he is a

very tough player to stop. And if he's in the NHL,

being taught by Manny and led by Ryan up top

and the sites obviously around as well, that's gonna boat

well first chances to become a full time NHLR. So

I'm still high.

Speaker 4: On the kid, Brandon outstanding. Thanks so much for doing this.

We won't wait so long next time around to have

you on again.

Speaker 6: Sounds good boys. Always a pleasure to take care.

Speaker 4: You bet Brandon Astell, voice of the Abbotsford Canucks. She'll

be in the Nhlhuys.

Speaker 1: Great guy.

Speaker 4: I would imagine. The one story that sticks out for

me when it comes to the Sedines is what Max

Sassin had to say to us a week or two ago,

and that's that he was talking to somebody. He was

up in Vancouver last year talking to somebody in Abbitsford

and he mentioned that the Sedins were working with him

in Vancouver and the player in Abbotsford City. That's interesting.

They were at our practices. That was in the morning.

Where they were at our practice in the afternoon. That's

that's dedication. And that's who you've got running your Vancouver Canucks.

It's a it's a positive. Let's take a break. We'll

introduce the waddling Dog poll choes to next. It has

to do with our car conversation in the first segment

Donnie Delly the team on Jack and now now we're

talking music and this is maybe uh top three album

of all time. DeVos first album back in the seventies,

I think around the time the phrase broken ankles starting

ankle Yeah, around then, why are you playing this?

Speaker 1: By the way Yeah exactly.

Speaker 5: You know why, because I was listening to uh, I

was listening to Serious on my way in and this

came on and it's a really good intro.

Speaker 3: It's a good song, but the intro is really good

and I know you.

Speaker 1: Love your demaus.

Speaker 4: Uncontrollable urges the name of this song. Yeah, commonore Ballroom Devo.

Speaker 3: There a cover of Satisfactions too weird.

Speaker 4: Oh no, it were too Saturday Night Live. I saw that.

I thought I'm hooked on this band, you know what's funny?

And then they went on to become a little too

commercial for me.

Speaker 1: I don't think that.

Speaker 5: I don't think their SNL performance gets enough love from

non music people. Music people talk about it being up

there with some different vaugh on like anything.

Speaker 3: Like big acts.

Speaker 5: Yeah, but like like Dave Grohland his book talk about

talked about seeing Divo and it just being like a

mind blowing I agree Tobly was no idea, but it's

not Alvis So Devo does nothing for me nothing this album.

Speaker 4: And this album came in Marble Vinyl, Wow, Like it

was just mind blowing.

Speaker 3: Back when Vinyl was Vinyl.

Speaker 4: I broke my ankles going to n and be sound

to buy this thing.

Speaker 1: Whip whipping.

Speaker 4: He would no way whip their one head.

Speaker 1: Oh, whip it's good. Whip it's good. Whip whip it

or wicked is good, it's good. I like that song.

Speaker 4: I'm not sure what you just said, but I'll nod

my head Nodin dog poll question, experience one of Victoria's

iconic destinations. Sleep sip stock up on one legendary spot.

Come sit and stay at the dog waddling today.

Speaker 1: Rick, all right, Ryan, get her up the waddling dog.

U PU pop question. If these two players are available

for the Canucks with the third overall pick, who do

you want them to take? Look at this I've our Stenberg.

Eighty five percent say yes, fifteen percent say Caleb Maholtra,

who's the top center available and ranked very high by

the way by the Canucks. I do believe the Canucks

have Mahultra ranked higher than Stenberg right now. But maybe,

as you said, maybe after this World Hockey Championships, Donny,

the visibility maholt is out. He didn't get to the

Memorial Cup. Maybe the visibility of Stenberg playing some more

games is gonna help him climb well.

Speaker 4: Of course, neither of these players, well one of them

might not be available at three. Yeah, I mean how

tempting would it be seeing what you saw today? Even

just we're asking this question because of the spectacular goal

that I have our Stenberg. I'm scored today for Team Sweden.

But just the thought, and I know San Jose needs

a defenseman, but at number two, if Stenberg is there,

can you imagine on a line with Maclin celebrity. I mean,

he could say the same thing about Gavin McKenna. That

would be so tempting, whether you need defenseman or not.

Speaker 1: They hold it a second. There's a centerment in this

city that could use Stenburg on his wing to help

him play a little bit.

Speaker 3: Stop it stop?

Speaker 1: Are you serious?

Speaker 3: So you don't think we're still going down that he

needs line mads role?

Speaker 1: Okay, so you don't think Stenberg could help Petterson?

Speaker 4: Rick should be the other way around, the other way around.

Speaker 5: Four nations Olympics play.

Speaker 1: He needs a winger.

Speaker 4: Ricky Bryan makes the point about playing on Swedish and

Sweden's national team. What happened?

Speaker 1: I hold it a second here, I got I got

the I got the Canucks roster from their final game

this season. You know who Peterson was playing with Holelander

on the right side. Didn't he go the whole season

without he works harder than eleven? Just stop and Debrosco

on the left side.

Speaker 4: He's what's wrong with that?

Speaker 1: Okay? But hold it said? What? It didn't help him?

Did it? Did it? He only got fifty points. If

you get a.

Speaker 4: Winger, Ricky's making eleven point six million dollars a year.

He should make his wingers better.

Speaker 5: I would hear you on that if he went to

the Four Nations and lit it up, or he went

to the Olympics and lit it up.

Speaker 3: He fell in the Four Nations roster. He dropped on

that roster, and I think the safe hill he fell.

Speaker 4: With the Canucks too literally, I think the same thing happened.

Speaker 1: That is such, that's okay, so gone. Old Lander had

two goals this year and thirty years a mat at rick.

He played the final game with the guy who's got

two goals on his way. Well, okay, debrosc had goals,

but the well, yeah, well they're on the third line

in this game. That's bad. Does that tell you all? What?

That tells you a lot? I'm just saying maybe the

Canucks say let's get Stenburg to fix eleven point six that.

Speaker 4: That would be the reason to draft Why not, you

got it, you're stuck for six more. You'd be a bonus.

It's not gonna happen. I'm not playing Ivars a fifty

point center.

Speaker 1: You're not playing Ivar Stenberg with him, no, no who

you're playing Ivar Stenberg with anybody else? Because I don't

want him to drag Stenburg down.

Speaker 4: If you know what, Yeah, here's my my plan for

the Canucks and help Ryan Andrick and Daniel are listening,

they watch, they watch draft Stenberg and have him work

out in the off season with Petterson. Sure, and then

maybe before he can influence him on what to do

in the off season, like they kill this line made

things agent.

Speaker 1: So let's pay somebody eleven point six to be a

centerment and then stick him with a guy with two

goals on the wing. How does that work?

Speaker 4: Don Well, how does it work that you gave him

eleven point six million dollars a season?

Speaker 1: You blame the guy that's not president anymore. That's why

this is unsigned.

Speaker 5: But it's backing up Dollywall, Dollywall, bang on here in

the base side, ocean front, besword inbox, Dolly Wall's bang

on here, Stenburg on peenies win would in all caps,

no doubt, Holp.

Speaker 1: Pete, thank you, thank you, Rick, intelligence hockey guy. How

do you know that?

Speaker 4: Who would you have played him with? Then?

Speaker 1: Rick?

Speaker 4: So you're gonna pay who who'd you have played him with?

Jacob breast led them in goals last year with twenty three?

Speaker 1: So whose hold on? Hold on thirty?

Speaker 3: Tell the whole picture on that. Yeah, it was all

on the power play, wasn't it?

Speaker 1: Sure Like?

Speaker 4: Okay, well there's another there's another argument to be made

when it comes to pedistal power play time.

Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 4: You know, he's out with some pretty good players. Yeah,

Quinn he was, you know, for much of the season.

But what happened there Rick.

Speaker 1: The Canucks power play at the end of the year

was it was really good.

Speaker 4: You know what, there's a theory on that that they

you know, they didn't default to Quinn. Hehughes all the time,

just watch him do his thing. But that that this

argument with the wingers and that it's it's your agent, buddies.

Speaker 1: So so let's put our top six winger with guys

with Cement. Who else guys watching, would you play Richie

Sutter with Petterson? So Jake Debreast has cement hands. I

never said to you, but they finished thirty second. There's

nobody good there. Thirty second. See the only thing I

will say to the time.

Speaker 5: Kind of back up, Rick, Remember when the bro line

went together. Remember when Peterson and Beer, No, no, the

bro line. Remember Besser Russell, Like when Besser got guys,

not David Camp. Besser seemed to shine.

Speaker 4: I was thinking, yeah, six a lot of line Besser.

Speaker 3: It helped out.

Speaker 1: I don't necessarily know what could even help Petterson though,

all right, you know who's gonna help Peterson? Peterson, Petterson?

Thank you? I mean, this is my part having a

great summary.

Speaker 4: Yeah, that's just it. I don't know here, here's just

the thought forget about your linemates.

Speaker 1: The contract.

Speaker 4: Have a productive summer. How about that two summers in

a row. Right after he signs this contract, he doesn't

come into camp in NHL shape. He also doesn't show up.

But you know what would help him?

Speaker 1: You know what?

Speaker 4: Would you know what? Rick, He's got to work on

his core and his leg strength. You can watch one

or two games and realize this guy can't stand up

work on it. Sorry, does it matter?

Speaker 1: I'm not sure. I don't know if I don't, if

it matters.

Speaker 5: To look at how long the list is now people

talking about that topic. What about Pederson and his off seasons?

Speaker 1: Talking foot?

Speaker 3: Ryan Johnson, the Sedins at their introductory.

Speaker 1: Talk it that tell you have the foot LV They've

all talked to him. It's all the same. If they

can't fix them, these guys aren't gonna fix them either.

Speaker 4: No, but you know what would help. He could come

into shape with the weakest legs in the history of

the National Hockey League at four hundred pounds. But if

he had great wingers, everything would be fine.

Speaker 1: And that would be a story.

Speaker 4: It really would Could you imagine weighing? We would be

good for our show?

Speaker 1: It would be.

Speaker 4: And that's the most important thing. Craig Button is going

to join us. He's in Colonna at the Memorial Cup.

He's going to join us at eleven o'clock. A conduct

draft pick, putting up a couple of points. So last

night the Kitcheners went over Everetts. We'll talk about that

big ride. The Twitter guy is next down. He telling

the team on check looking for the ultimate Vancouver Island getaway.

five zero, two four eight eight triple three.

Speaker 1: Your island adventure starts here.

Speaker 4: And you're getting actually a lot of support, uh Steve

from Abbotsford. Just before we get to big Rye Baside inbox,

I remember Howie Meeker saying he went around whoever the

player was, like a hoop around a barrel, just loved it.

A lot of people saying that breaking the ankles. Breaking

someone's ankles replaced fake him out of his jockstrap. That

was an old saying from back in Donnie's youth.

Speaker 5: Wouldn't you say something like that doing highlights or his

jockstrap or his jock was somewhere or something. I thought

you had a highlight, like I vaguely remember a highlight.

Speaker 4: I would say, you fake him out of his something

like that. Right, Okay, I've got a good jock story about.

Speaker 3: My Well, you do you do?

Speaker 6: You do?

Speaker 1: You do you do?

Speaker 4: Maybe the most embarrassing story of Donnie's. It's it's up there,

young lacrosse career, It's up.

Speaker 1: There for sure. Howie Meeker the best? Gollye g Willakers. Yeah,

roll roll that tape, roll back it up, back it up.

Howie Meeker was the best.

Speaker 4: Yeah, and the Holly Meeker was a Calter Trophy winner.

Let's just scored five goals in rookie. If I'm not

if I'm not mistaken. Was also a politician, lived in

Parksville before I passed.

Speaker 5: Darryl Ray does an amazing impersonation. He has a lot

of good impersonations. Actually, okay, yesterday, you guys mentioned it earlier,

the Nick sweeping the Calves pandemonium in New York City,

both with the fans and the broadcasters.

Speaker 3: This is Alex Monaco. I don't know if you guys

saw this.

Speaker 5: Live on MSG Networks reacting to the next sweeping of

the Calves Calves last night.

Speaker 1: Shot.

Speaker 3: Jo had not.

Speaker 4: Shot joy time.

Speaker 5: Now, I know what you're gonna say. I know, I

already know what you're gonna say. He did this for

he did this for attention.

Speaker 4: He was trying to get some We all do everything

for attention. Business.

Speaker 5: I I maybe because now two kids, I can't get it.

Did I can't get to that level. I can I

can no longer get to that level.

Speaker 1: Get maybe who knows.

Speaker 5: Who knows what was going on there. But it's a

big deal. It is a big deal in New York.

It's a big deal in New York. First time since

ninety nine, right that they were in the final get to.

Speaker 4: Absolutely the jail in Bronson. We'll get to him later

if we if we have time. But his story like

free Agent, oh yeah, Dallas four years ago, wasn't a

big deal.

Speaker 5: Okay, you look at they've also made massive moves the

Knicks half right, they trade Cat to Minnesota. They made

that trade with the Raptors for they got Cat from

Minnesota for Julius Randall. They made the trade with the Raptors.

Remember they said they got og Anandobi in New York.

They traded RJ. Barrett to Toronto. That was a big

deal at the time, big swings. And yeah, here they

are in the finals, and I think that, Like I'm

seeing a lot of people that are saying, like, pump

the brakes on like this, like the Western team is

just gonna win the title.

Speaker 4: We want eleven straight suppressive.

Speaker 3: It is super impressive. Something else that's impressive.

Speaker 5: Bryce Harper, Okay, so this is this story, this story,

you can roll this, Derek.

Speaker 3: This was yesterday. This started to go viral. Bryce Harper

live stream on Instagram of his morning routine.

Speaker 5: Look what he does with the toothpaste here, Okay, he

takes the toothpaste.

Speaker 1: He's squeezing it there out of the tube. Toothpaste in

the mouth.

Speaker 5: What Then he wets his toothbrush, no toothpaste and begins

to brush his.

Speaker 4: Teeth, but the toothpaste.

Speaker 1: The toothpasce in his mouth.

Speaker 3: Who does not put their toothpas on their tooth breast?

Speaker 1: Bryce Harper, that's nuts.

Speaker 4: But maybe block or something like that. Maybe is there

a health.

Speaker 1: Reason for this?

Speaker 3: Maybe he knows something.

Speaker 1: I don't know.

Speaker 3: Maybe he knows. Maybe nine ten dentists would rather that.

Speaker 1: You do this.

Speaker 4: That was dead teen gump.

Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know, or tried it.

Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, you still get that with the floss commercials

and stuff too. You know, ten dentists, who's that one

dentist who's the pessimist guy? That's like, uh, I'm not

signing off on this study. Sorry, it's not happening. But anyway,

this is bizarre.

Speaker 5: And like I say, what viral yesterday and people bringing

up how weird this is. I've never seen anybody do

this in my life always.

Speaker 4: Okay, we just talked about getting attention. Bryce Harper is

pretty good at it.

Speaker 1: Yeah, but this is like a live stock.

Speaker 4: He knows what he's doing.

Speaker 1: Maybe I don't know. I don't know, you know, I

don't know.

Speaker 4: The toothpaste in my mouth first, everybody, what's.

Speaker 1: The big attention to me?

Speaker 3: By the way, amazing here, Bryce Harper has got amazing.

Speaker 4: Well, everybody's got well well in comparison to this exactly.

Speaker 3: I don't know. It's just weird anyway.

Speaker 5: Maybe I'll bring it up next time I go to

the dentist and see if it's a.

Speaker 3: Or and if it's maybe, it's maybe it's better.

Speaker 4: You go like, by the way, is there anything more sati?

I guess there's a lot of things that we're satisfying,

but dental floss is a satisfying routine.

Speaker 3: Ah, it's an annoying routine.

Speaker 4: How it's I'm not Yeah, No, I use my uh dentist,

Sean Kelly and coquitlam that just to the stars, to

the stars. We don't have to mention what stars.

Speaker 3: You already have on the show. You can keep it

under Matt Marzella's dentist.

Speaker 4: But he told me to put a knot in the

dental floss and it does a better job of picking

out whatever food you have.

Speaker 3: Yeah, but floss is so like, how do you even

not that?

Speaker 4: Come on, Look, I'm way older than you. You've got

more dexterity in your hands than I I.

Speaker 3: I guess I don't think I could do it.

Speaker 1: I don't know.

Speaker 4: You don't think you can put this on the put

this on the list, can't drive us, can't mow a line.

So tie a knot with mental floss?

Speaker 1: Come on? Can you? I don't tie not like you

get your wife to do it. The flossing is a

pain in the ass. See, I know it's satisfying. Rick's

watching a show. What you're just sitting on the couch floor.

Speaker 4: The flossing scene and dumb and dumber? Was it dumb

and dumber or Kingpin?

Speaker 3: I don't think it was dumb and dumber. This is

not coming to my mind or a dumb and dumber

I think I think it was dumb and dumble.

Speaker 1: Oh, actually maybe it was.

Speaker 4: There's a lot of food Hangeah, okay.

Speaker 3: Maybe maybe, maybe maybe that's the one.

Speaker 4: But no, it's sad. You see, you've had something in

your teeth all day, right, and you haven't got floss available,

and you finally get that. See I finally get that

floss out, tie the knot out, the food comes.

Speaker 1: Oh yeah, see that's satisfying. Come on, I go toothpick.

Oh I'd rather go I'm.

Speaker 4: Stuck in there breaks thick, Yeah, okay, it does break

if you go flos versus toothpick on a poll, it's an.

Speaker 7: If that's ever a pull question on this show. And

that's our last show. I think that's our last show.

Up next though, Tarson's director of Scout in Craig Button.

He's in Colonna beautiful Colonna for the los Ange might be.

Speaker 3: It might be, but does have nice teeth, So maybe

Button is next. It's Donny Dollars the team I Check.

Speaker 4: Hey everyone, it's Donnia Dolly and we're looking to partner

with your company.

Speaker 1: We have several packages and price points to fit your

budget and spread the word about your company on the show,

in our podcast, and on social media.

Speaker 4: We'd love to get involved with your company called two

five oh eight, eight oh twenty two eighty two or

email advertise at checkmedia dot Ca. So the flossing scene

that I'm talking about that I thought was in Dumb

and Dumber was in another fairly breathers movie, Kingpin.

Speaker 1: Kingpin, which is I think I think falls.

Speaker 4: Into the category of an underrated movie. It was great,

like a lot of I bring it up a lot

and people say, I haven't seen it. Great show, Woody Harrelson, Ryan,

I know you haven't seen it because you haven't seen anything. Okay.

All of our guests today, including Craig Button, standing by

in Klona, brought to you by a title sponsor, Able Auctions,

Ablelouctions dot Ca. More on them later. Remind me about that, right,

Craig Button Joinning's now TSN scouting director Memorial Cup going

on in Colona. Craig back from parasailing or golf. I'm

not sure, how are you, sir?

Speaker 8: I am really good.

Speaker 4: You know.

Speaker 9: It's interesting when you talk about movies, and you know

one of the things that you know, seeing movies over

time and from long ago, you gotta be you gotta

be careful about making references to them. There's the young

guys like Ryan Anderson. You make a reference and they

have no idea what you're talking about.

Speaker 1: Thank you.

Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel old enough.

Speaker 8: I don't need that well, and they rub it in,

they rub it in. I was in a game. I

don't know if I told you this.

Speaker 9: So I was at a game I don't know, about

three weeks ago, and I was just standing and watching

the game and that we're talking, and then.

Speaker 8: Ac DC came on. So the kids go, yeah, no,

so you know, it's plays in the rings And one

of the kids turns me out you know this song?

Speaker 1: No.

Speaker 9: I just laughed, and I just well, and I said,

oh yeah, they played in the rinks all the time,

like you know, And I'm thinking to myself, listen, twenty

thirty years before that, kid was born, like.

Speaker 4: Exactly, been there, done that all right, Kitchener six to

two over Everett in the Battle of the Beatens yesterday.

I want to focus on on this player. I can't

say I know a whole lot about them, but Nashville

first rounder Cameron Reid defenseman one in three. What has

he shown you so far?

Speaker 9: Craig Well, I mean, you watch Cameron play, it's hard

not to immediately notice what a great skatery is because

you know stating, whether it be getting a puck out

of the zone, whether it be transitioning, whether it be

jumping into the attack, the skating is outstanding. Then you

start to see all the other parts of his game.

I mean, he's so good at reading plays, using that

skating to close them. Defensively, He's got really good sense

and feel with the puck. He gets the puck to

the right places at the right times. So in finishing

what you talk about with Cameron Reid, like, and he's

not going to be in a seventy five point guy

in the National Hockey League, But if you want offense,

there's certain elements you need. You need defenseman that can

get the puck out of your own zone. You need

defenseman that can pass the puck really well, whether skating

while passing it, but skating is a big part of

the two. Then you need defenseman that can close plays

in the defensive zone. Cameron is that defenseman that's going

to play lots of minutes. He's going to play important

minutes and he's going to support a really good offensive defenseman.

Because that's said kind of think about Matias sack home

with Evan Bouchard. I think that Cameron Reid has that

Mathias that come style game.

Speaker 4: Hey, Craig Future Vancouver Canuck. Landon dupunt last night had

no points and maybe a tough game for him at Everett.

But has he been living up to your expectations?

Speaker 1: Well?

Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean I think that Landon has been living

up to not only the expectations that can put on

a player that has given exceptional status and all eyes

are on him. I mean, there's no question that he

has been able to excel. He did it as a

fifteen year old, He's done it as a sixteen year old.

He'll turn the right age of seventeen here in a

couple of days, and you think about what he has done.

He's playing against players four and five years older than him,

and all he does is excel, control the game, command

the game. And I mean Landon has high expectations of himself.

He doesn't take a back seat in terms of how

he plays the game or or in his belief that

he can be a good player and a difference maker.

Speaker 8: And he's all of that and more.

Speaker 1: Craig, how surprised are you with what Vegas is doing?

Up three? Nothing on Colorado? Nobody saw this coming.

Speaker 9: No, they didn't wreck, But I mean we can look

at different areas. I think the biggest problem for the

Colorado Avalanche is Scott Wedgwood has been poor yep. And

I know they're the best defensive team in the league.

During the regular season, the goaltending was tops in the league,

and now it's failed them at the worst time. And

Cautter Hart on the flip side has been excellent for Vegas,

So we know, Okay, this player might be hurt.

Speaker 8: This player was out for a couple of games in

the case of Cam mccar.

Speaker 9: But when your goaltending is giving up one and two

real weak goals a game and the other guy at

the other end is making sure that nothing's getting past them,

You're gonna find yourself in a whole lot of trouble.

Speaker 8: And that's where the Colorado Avalanche find themselves.

Speaker 1: Twelve shots on goal including overtime, is not going to

cut it great, one shot in the third period, zero

and overtime. What's going on with the habs? Why are

they having trouble generating so many shots against Carolina?

Speaker 9: With twelve shots cut it in soccer? Kidding, I'm just kidding.

Speaker 8: Listen.

Speaker 9: You know Game one, I mean Montreal played an exceptional game.

Speaker 8: They had the chances.

Speaker 9: They were able to do the things that to the

Carolina Hurricanes that we haven't seen teams in this playoffs

to be able to do. In Game two a little

bit less so, and in Game three they were stifled.

They were stifled completely, I think one of the biggest

things for Montreal. And they can talk about, hey, listen,

we're not giving up a lot and we know, but

when you're not getting those chances rick like and you

use the term, it's not going to cut it. That's

exactly where Montreal finds themselves. Now that game last where

did they go twenty five minutes with a shot on goal?

And so so yeah, we go all it comes down

to one shot. You are just kind of hanging on

by a thread and just hoping that somehow, some way

you get lucky. Because at that point in time, when

the opponent is controlling you, controlling you in the way

you are where you can't even get chance. Says you're

on a hope, in a prayer to win the game.

And now Montreal, that's two consecutive games. It didn't get better,

it got worse. And if Carolina is able to continue

to do this, this is going to see this series

will end in five games.

Speaker 8: It's as simple as that.

Speaker 1: Absolutely, Craig Vegas still not giving permission to teams to

talk to Bruce Cassidy, and if they go to the

Stanley Cup finals, it could be a little bit more.

Can Toronto and Edmonton keep waiting or are they going

to have to make a move?

Speaker 9: Well, how about if I to pose it back to

you guys, this question.

Speaker 8: It's it's a question like do you need a coach

by the beginning of June?

Speaker 4: You need it?

Speaker 8: Like when do you need a coach? You need a coach,

you know, yeah, you want to start planning.

Speaker 9: You want your coach to start talking to players and

everything it's May twenty six.

Speaker 8: My mother's eighty.

Speaker 9: Eighth birthday, eighty eighth birthday today, So happy birthday to

my mother. Yeah, and anyway, it's May twenty six. You

don't need a coach like so if you've if you've

got somebody in mind, and you got to wait, keep waiting,

and if it doesn't come to fruition that you can

get permission to talk to one of your candidates, well

then then you move on.

Speaker 8: But I would I don't think there's any pressure.

Speaker 9: I don't think there should be any pressure on Edmonton

or Toronto anybody else to hire a coach on May

twenty sixth or June tenth or June fifteenth. You can

wait and be patient because when you need the coaches

when as much later than now.

Speaker 4: Well you can wait till there's eight games left in

the regular season, can't you.

Speaker 1: Greg? Well, what's what's Tart's done for the Golden Knights.

Speaker 8: That's a really good point, Donnie.

Speaker 9: And you think now to get in a coach in place,

I mean, what is it now? Two point two years

coaches tenor and then that center and National Hockey leaguer.

I mean it's become NFL like I mean, was it

chasing kid that just got fired with.

Speaker 8: Four years left on his contract with forty million.

Speaker 9: I mean, so you know, you look at it, but

you're right, like I mean, that's the separate part of

this is do you you need a coach to be

in place to be replaced with eight games left? So

so you do need a coach in place, but you know,

because you can't replace them if you don't have one

in place.

Speaker 4: And Turts has obviously had a positive impact on on

the Golden Knights.

Speaker 9: Well, there's nothing you can take away from John Tortorella there.

But but when he got hired, like one of the

first things he said was he goes, you know what,

I'm not here to change things, and you know, and

and whether whether they were maybe a little complacent, whatever

it may be, the bottom line was their goaltending was

at the bottom of the league. Well it's not at

the bottom of the league anymore. And let's study Bowman.

Let's study Bowman's line about you know, great coaches have

made or great goaltenders make great coaches. And I think

that John Tortrella has done a nice job. But at

the same time, when you get goaltending, your chances of

winning are markedly improved.

Speaker 8: Jared Dugner, You didn't tell me he's not a good

coach all of a sudden. Yeah, I don't think so.

Speaker 1: Yeah, Craig, thanks for this.

Speaker 4: Enjoy the beautiful city of Coloonna, the beautiful Okanagan.

Speaker 8: Yeah, it is beautiful.

Speaker 9: I feel really lucky to be able to be here

in a great junior hockey community and a wonderful part

of the country.

Speaker 4: Yeah, Craig, thanks so much for this. Next week, you bet,

Craig button TSN scouting director in Coloonna. It's Kitchener versus

chakudom me Tony. Kitchener has advanced to the semifinal.

Speaker 1: Kitchener looks great, absolutely phenomenal.

Speaker 4: I didn't get a chance to ask him about Parker

Alkos of Klowna and Gabriel Sharrat of Kitchener. What are

you laughing at?

Speaker 1: Ryan? Canocks picks their Canocks picks rock.

Speaker 4: He's laughing because of Parker having played for Port Moody

amateur hockey, so that's that's why he's laughing. But gabrielt

both of them are our six six round draft picks.

One on one last night.

Speaker 5: Canucks kicks Yeah, Michael Samison, I think is up there

watching those guys. I think I saw a photo of

him for the Canucks.

Speaker 4: But that is so inside baseball.

Speaker 1: No, I thought that's an inside joke. That's an inside

joke between.

Speaker 4: Our title sponsor has mentioned Able Auctions. June third, Able

Auctions will sell the contents of a dollar store wholesaler. Uh,

you want to get off and get at dollar stores

a lot of things, not often. Backscratchers got two of

them in my home.

Speaker 1: Backscratchers's got one here, Derek, he's got one here. He's

always going like.

Speaker 4: I was going, always go for the wood. The wood

backscratches are better than the metal ones.

Speaker 1: We've covered it all today.

Speaker 3: We have covered it all.

Speaker 4: And I think you can get floss there as well.

Speaker 1: Dollar stores though for kids toys, unreal dogs, Dodge toy stuff.

I got get all Leo's toys from the Dollar show

because who cares if they get destroyed.

Speaker 4: Well, apparently you guys should have went to this and

they wouldn't have gone out of business. June fourth, Able

will sell a Colonna brewery, oh and a North Vancouver brewery,

including Bruce Systems tanks, filtration canning equipment and backscratches.

Speaker 1: So that's the beer plant right there. No, I've been

in one before. They're they're quite Uh.

Speaker 4: You've been in one of those.

Speaker 3: Tanks, Nah, that beer plant in a brewery.

Speaker 1: Yeah, in a brewery. They're they're they're quite fascinating, you know,

I think they are.

Speaker 3: They are.

Speaker 4: Yeah, apparently again not fascinating enough because they do went

out of business. For info on these and you know,

we don't mean to laugh here, of course, not for

question experience one of Victoria's iconic destinations, sleep sip stock

up on one legendary spot. Come sit and stay at

the dog today, Ryan get her up.

Speaker 1: The wadlingdog pop bull question. It is, if these two

players are available for the Canucks with the third overall pick,

who do you want them to take? Look at this

eighty four percent, Ivar Stenberg leading Caleb Maholtra at sixteen percent.

But this isn't fair. I mean, come on, man Stenberg

scored a beautiful goal at the World's today CA. Yeah,

and Caleb hasn't played in weeks because they got a limit.

He should You know, it would have been nice if

his team would have. But you're closer with Caleb's agent

than yes. I know both these guys agents. Stamberg's agent

is Kevin Up, a Vancouver guy, good guy, good Pelamine,

and Maholtra's agent's are good Pelamine too. Dearren Ferriss, I

don't have any picking one over the over.

Speaker 4: He said, it's not fair. It's not fair, I think

because we just saw a spectacular goal bye of our

Stenberg and Caleb Maltras exactly significate amount of time.

Speaker 1: It would have been nice if Caleb advanced to the

Kelowna but they they lost.

Speaker 4: You wanted to talk about soccer, Ryan.

Speaker 1: Can you show h Jesse Marsh getting a new deal

with We have a clip. Oh, we got a clip.

You want to play the clip? Yeah, okay, but this

is pretty significant. Yesterday Canada Soccer announcing Jesse Marsh a

four year contract extension that takes him to the next

World Cup. And this is pretty significant for me because

guess what, how but if Canada doesn't do well at

this year's World Cup, as Ryan was fighting with us

before the show, and then you give him, you give

the guy four more years.

Speaker 3: That's the point I made.

Speaker 1: Yeah, you said why give him four years? And Canada

falls flat on their face at this World Cup and

then you're giving them four more years.

Speaker 4: I just I've already you've already given them four more years.

Speaker 1: Yeah I know that, but that's the point.

Speaker 4: Wait, what do you what do you how do you

quantify this? Like how what what is doing well at

the World Cup advancing past the first round. I guess

what most people want people consider that group group be

to be pretty weak.

Speaker 5: I mean I should know, but I don't know where

to switch his rank. But the Canada's ranked higher than Bosnia.

They ranked higher than Guitar, so that should be two games,

which would put you.

Speaker 4: I think they'd get a win at the very their

very first win at the very I.

Speaker 1: Mean that should be the very very very least and

more one goal.

Speaker 5: But what if it goes what if it is a

disaster somehow? I just don't get the rush to do

this right now.

Speaker 1: It's very well the.

Speaker 4: Timing of Couria was interested in hiring him, but that

was before he took the Canada drive. Yeah okay, but

obviously he's somebody who's well respected, so maybe there's another

offer in there for him. Maybe he had leverage and

that's why they wanted to lock him up. And look

at I don't know, he's an impressive talker. But guys, sorry,

I'm gonna take a left turn here. But the other

thing with with with Jesse Marsh yesterday because for a

little short on time here was the Alfonso Davies situation.

He's going to be over in Canada. They play that

friendly in his hometown of Evmonton. He won't be playing

in that and isn't expected to play in Canada's World

Cup opener in Toronto against Bosnia, but could be available

for the two games in Vancouver.

Speaker 5: Yeah, Marsh said he will play in the World Cup,

but not the best player. But they are banged up,

I mean beyond Alfonso Davies promised. David has been heard

as well a lot of issues.

Speaker 1: But there you go.

Speaker 4: I mean, if they don't do well, he could say, well,

well we'ren'nt healthy.

Speaker 5: And I heard Roff and rough talking about does this

alleviates and pressure because you've locked him up, it's not

going to be a storyline. I don't know. It's just

weird timing to me, like what if they underperform? Now

you've got this guy for your next World Cup too?

Speaker 1: But did they like him? He's done good, you know,

but the results aren't. There are people lining up to

take this job. I'm not sure I would think so sure.

And before they signed him, Canadian soccer was a mess.

Well if that was a mess, he's brought stability.

Speaker 5: But you need results though, like stability is great visions

without getting to the World Cup.

Speaker 1: They finally got to the World Cup. They're turning around

John Herdman too forget Yeah exactly.

Speaker 4: Okay. Meanwhile, news from the National Hockey League other than

what's going on than the Stanley Cup playoffs the Pittsburgh Penguins.

We've got the tweet here. Yeah, the Pittsburgh Penguins have

re opt with of Jenny Malcolm rick Is from Chris Johnson,

friend of the Show.

Speaker 1: He wasn't going to go anywhere, Let's be honest. You

know his agent, JP Berry got a good job deal

the year one years. The rumor is Donny five point

five million. You know he did this is a guy older.

He had a good year. It's not like his numbers

tapered off. But you know, they keep those big guys

in Pittsburgh. They should require his wingers.

Speaker 4: They had sixty one last year.

Speaker 1: Yeah, he had sixty one points and in what is

twenty fifty six games? How many? How many years has

he been there now?

Speaker 4: Twenty?

Speaker 8: Right?

Speaker 1: Okay, but just hold on a seconds. But guys likes

the guys like this should finish their careers with one team.

Can you imagine him going anywhere else, Like, I mean,

come on, well, Ray Borke did yes, any any won

a Cup and Ray Bork won a Cup with Colorado.

Daniel Arfortson with Ottawa.

Speaker 3: He's still trying to figure out how many years.

Speaker 4: For MS returning season.

Speaker 1: His agent wasn't going to take a pay cut. He

had significant numbers. He is thirty nine years old and

still posting good numbers, more than eleven point six last year.

Speaker 4: By the way, absolutely, what do you you were like,

maybe had better wingers, that Penguins were a powerhouse as

a top.

Speaker 1: Six centerman, what do you want done? You want wingers?

You finish. If you're gonna put the plumbers and some

guys with cementans with the top six center he's not

gonna get points. How did bj McDonald do with wing

That was one year bj McDonald got won fifty one

goals and Edmonton and Glenn say there what did Glenn say?

The say he said a fire hydrant could score fifty

one goals. Yeah, that helps, that helps, But I know

what he said, I know what he said. That was

back in the eighties. We all at bj McDonald ended

up in Vancouver, as you will, still there yes, yeah,

and he's with he's a scout with Canadian Hockey. Great guy. Anyways, Okay,

how are we doing it for time? Pastime pastime?

Speaker 4: They're not gonna show that fight in colonial We don't

have time? No maybe DTMC.

Speaker 1: Okay, all right, here we go BC's number one sports

about Lakaramakie.

Speaker 4: And his future Brandon Astell? Yeah, people just tuning in

the My thought.

Speaker 3: Maybe I should have just said yeah, Brandon, and well,

I gotta be very careful. ALW I say that too.

Speaker 1: G Wright Simon signed card in the middle.

Speaker 3: What did you run in the studio this week?

Speaker 1: And card o the day?

Speaker 5: Patrick Wall you know this, I've seen this on Twitter,

the whole Torch thing, you know, Clauded the mew last

night with the Torch the Bell Center that Bring the

Torch show.

Speaker 3: You think Wall would ever do it.

Speaker 4: He's come back, he's come to mean, but but the

way he exited that.

Speaker 1: That's what I mean. But he's come back. But you

don't see.

Speaker 4: People forget oftentimes they forget the bad times? Does he though? Patrick? Well,

there's that, but he but he has come back? Is

he not?

Speaker 1: Well? I mean he's come back as a coach.

Speaker 3: Wait he was remember remember they were getting the Islanders.

Speaker 4: But in the capacity of let's celebrate Pat and I

don't know, has he he has and his time with

the Montreal Canadians has he I don't know.

Speaker 1: I don't know. Was he not there for the ken

Dryden they did something for ken Dryden? Maybe maybe maybe maybe.

Speaker 3: But I mean, I mean, I'd be curious the reaction

because when again, when the Islanders.

Speaker 4: Are getting from him, the crowd crowd now, I think,

But it's the situation like, Okay, Totos is going to

be in our show tomorrow when he came back to that, Yes,

he round and the way things ended in Vancouver comes

back to Vancouver. People remember the good time?

Speaker 1: Yeah?

Speaker 4: Yeah, fabulous player he was. Yeah, you know, with a

really really negative moment. But people I think it would

be it would be just fine. And again my memory's

not serving me well here in terms of past. Yeah,

somebody I couldn't remember the dental floss scene, Kingpin. So

there's that, by the way, the one thing more satisfying

than dental floss, scratching your back with a backscratchers for dolerama,

A couple other things, but you go on DTMZ next.

Donny Dall the Tiama.

stay up to date with Phase two of their golf

course renovation on Instagram at Whistler Golf And just a reminder,

the golf shop and driving range up in Whistler will

remain open throughout the summer. Something a little bit different

on DTMZ right now. This is a story we didn't

have time to get to earlier, and I think it

falls into the entertainment realm. So Kitchener beats Everett six'

to two last night in The Memorial. Cup kitchener now

two and. Zero The rangers advanced To thursday's semi. Final

but a lot of people are talking about this fight

Between andrew McNeil Of kitchener And Jackson vaughan Of, everett

and it was toe to, toe very entertaining. Fight but

WHAT i want people to look at, here what's getting

a lot of the attention is the. Camera we're gonna

roll this dude go, Okay so that they start out

and you've got the camera in the corner dealing with

the start of the, fight and then on wee goes

the cameraman In KELOWNA tsn broadcast hops onto the. Ice.

Wow And ryan has a problem with this shot the

glove for a. Ground he feels it's too.

Speaker 1: Artistic it is this, guy look at this, camera it's

all what's wrong with?

Speaker 5: This he's trying to be our see like Mister spielberg,

Here it's just this is, fine just this normal, camera.

Speaker 1: Older like and the.

Speaker 4: Guy first of, ALL i admire the fact that you've

got a cameraman who's not only a talented camera, member

obviously a very good skater and courageous to do. This

and you, know people are a lot of people are, saying,

boy he's gonna be a. Loss oh that's a good.

Shot come, on nothing but respect for the two.

Speaker 1: Kids that's one And cannucts need more guys like, this

a good Tough canadian.

Speaker 4: Kids but one of those guys on the wing With.

Petterson what.

Speaker 1: Happens he'll Protect, Pederson he'll Protect. Peterson and two keep the, camera.

Guys don, says you're on. Skate you got this heavy

thing on your head and your. Neck come, on it's

not nineteen ninety four. Anymore he's not Like god like

this on THE. I it's like this and you can't

tell me this Is this is Easy, ryan Something i've

never had the ref. Cam, yeah that, one it just does.

Speaker 4: Works or when you have a power play and they

do this more in THE us than they do In,

canada they'll have the, camera they'll use the director will

use the camera behind the net to see the setup

of the power. Play And i'm not so sure if they.

Work this.

Speaker 1: Works though this. Works it's the view of the. Century

and you know, what it's a great view of a

fight as opposed to sitting up behind the camera named

view of the cente of the century the? Century could you?

Like how what is wrong with?

Speaker 5: You when they, do he, says get this, camera guy and.

War they're doing it in The habs series as. Well

they've got the guy go out on the. Ice it

is a different it's. Different I'm i'm okay with, Yes

i'm okay with. It you're making it sound like he

planted the glove, there.

Speaker 1: But, look he knows WHAT i. Got i've got it,

Now i've got.

Speaker 4: It that is very appreciated by by people like that's just.

Speaker 1: Like that we're the only ones noticing. It by, way that's.

Speaker 4: True, well maybe the three people that are watching us

notice that.

Speaker 3: NOW i just, YEAH i don't know.

Speaker 4: What, well being DIFFERENT i bothers me is that this

will become normal and you'll go all this so. Wonderful

well to be ark AND i are ahead of the curve.

Speaker 5: Here they've been doing the on ice camera at like

international games. Forever, yeah And i'm surprised it's taken so

long for them to do.

Speaker 4: It there's a lot of skills going on.

Speaker 1: Here oh, yeah oh, yeah, yeah, definitely, definitely, Definitely.

Speaker 4: And you know, what we shouldn't assume it's a camera

man either a camera.

Speaker 1: Person absolutely great stuff there all.

Speaker 5: Around braidon from atmsphere And i'm With ryan two. Arts

he could barely see the. FIGHT i want to see

the punches land not a hockey.

lake COUCHIN, Nbi rod says That Howie meeker used to

say breaking, Ankles so you know, What, ryan you'd think

it's a term from the. Nineties it's. Not it's way, back, Agreed.

Speaker 4: Amrit is it just? Me but with this new management

group wanted to keep everyone from a thirty second place

team shows me nothing is going to change with his.

Franchise but, hey at least the media got their, buddy

THE gm.

Speaker 1: Job this guy's out to. Lunch he's out to. Lunch

a good. Guy he, Is but we Did Francesco aquallini

and The Sadine twins Hired. Ryan it was not the.

Media wake the hell Up ryan Buying largs though in

favor Of. Right, yeah because we Know ryan inside. Out

we know he said he's good at what he. Does,

okay look at, This ryan complains anytime, fighting it's a

part of. Hockey From nancy even doesn't like The cameron

even liked the camera work of a fight like it's.

Ridiculous it's not From. Nancy he called Me. Nancy OH

i thought it was From. Nancy oh he's calling You.

Nancy NO I i, OKAY i thought it Was. Nancy, no, no,

no it's From. Nazi it says From. Nancy is it From?

Speaker 3: Nancy he called Me.

Speaker 1: Nancy he's calling you A.

Speaker 4: Nazi remember that that that term was used in the Movie.

Goon was, it, yeah A?

Speaker 1: Nazi? Yeah oh, okay so he's calling you A. Nancy

but you got to stop with. This that was a

beautiful fight two Good canadian kids In. Kelowna who doesn't like?

Speaker 4: That it was?

Speaker 1: Tough is it just? Me?

Speaker 4: Lem you Made Rob brown a forty goal, scorer as

well As Warren Young. Gretzkey look at This Rick retzkey

made bj McDonald a forty goal. Man centers make, wingers

not the other way, around just saying that's. Unsigned that's

it's incredible and and you should listen to.

Speaker 1: That but all you people out, there if you Want

peterson to have more, points he needs. Wingers you can

finished on elite. Wingers he doesn't have. That so he's

going to be stuck at fifty points for another six.

Years making eleven point.

Speaker 4: Six says it's because not because of him and what

happens in the, summer and it's all because of the. Wingers.

Speaker 1: Right Caleb maholtra is the best player in the response

and also position wise for The. Caducks he checks all the.

Boxes Regind. Ashcroft Regin ashcroft, Says Caleb maholtra is the

guy That canducks should take a.

Speaker 4: Three New West, darren is it just? ME i can't

wait until next year's draft When rick is excited For

Landon DuPont to fix eleven. Points New, West, darin it

is The New West darren having some fun with, You.

Speaker 1: Rick he is look At steve From. ABERSBURG i REMEMBER

i look And i'm reading the how We meeker submissions

BECAUSE i loved him AND i grew up with. Him

we meekersay and he went Around hooper on. Al you

read that? Right, OKAY i do that a. Lot steve From,

ABSBURG i JUST i Miss Howie. MEEKER i loved. HIM

i thought he was the.

Speaker 4: Best god Bless jim From. Surrey is it just ME rossi?

Was stenberg And besser would be a pretty sick. Line

Then pete With ogrin And. Carlson, hey why Not jim From?

Surrey carlson? Playings he could play center or, Wing.

Speaker 1: And, YEAH i can see. That that's a good submission

From jim And. Surrey how about this? One stenberg could

make the team out of. Camp maholter is, good but

he's going to need more. Time see that's the. Thing

we don't know that today we're all. GUESSING i, mean

you can.

Speaker 4: Give them what we know and what we read and

what we. See stenberg seems to be AS nhl ready

as any other, prospect maybe more so Than Milhultre. Center

you've got a lot of responsibility, right big. Time, Uh

i'm With don And, ryan this Is craig and vanderf

is it just, Me But i'm With don And ryan eleven,

six who came up with that. Nickname an eleven six

needs to fix?

Speaker 1: Himself?

Speaker 4: Yeah, really an eighteen year old kid needs to fix

pe D come. On that's from s from The Smah

chances with Uh craig And Vanderhoff.

Speaker 1: Craig up In beautiful vandroof coming. In so you're saying

that an eighteen year old. Kid so he's Not patterson's.

Problem he's not going to be eighteen. Forever he's going

to turn nineteen in twenty and then twenty one times

running out. Faster patterson's got six years. Left he doesn't

have one or. Two Don he's got six years.

Speaker 4: Left, No but the point he's making is that it

shouldn't be up to an eighteen year old to fix

fix the issues with the player who's in his eighth

or ninth season making eleven point six million dollars a.

Speaker 1: Year but that is sadly where what you're. Saying but

that's sadly where we are with this. Player look at,

You we look at don stop, it Don don si
