[SPEAKER_00]: This is the Jockel Underground Podcast number 208.
[SPEAKER_00]: Sitting here with echoed Charles, and we have gotten some questions from the field, from the front lines, from life, from business, from the battlefield, in some cases.
[SPEAKER_00]: And we will present some answers, some recommendations, or at a minimum, some various courses of action to follow.
[SPEAKER_01]: So let's get into it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, first question.
[SPEAKER_01]: Greetings, Jockel.
[SPEAKER_01]: I've been on the path for years home Jim jiu jitsu blue belt palia business owner and father to a three-year-old future BJJ World Champion.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a good dream.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a good dream.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a good dream
[SPEAKER_01]: My wife is amazing and runs her own business from home.
[SPEAKER_01]: She also works out and takes care of our son during the day.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're very intentional about how we're raising him, keeping him active, learning, and eating well.
[SPEAKER_01]: But with our schedules, we sometimes rely on movies to distract him while we get work done.
[SPEAKER_01]: No tablet, just longer, more educational content on TV, but it still doesn't feel great.
[SPEAKER_01]: What would you do in the situation to build good habits for your kids while still handling work?
[SPEAKER_01]: We can't afford an NIN.
[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, first of all, so it sounds like you're doing awesome.
[SPEAKER_00]: You've got the GJ2.
[SPEAKER_00]: The home gym.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a big step.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a big step.
[SPEAKER_00]: People don't even realize how big of a step that is.
[SPEAKER_00]: But that's a big step.
[SPEAKER_00]: Do you GJ2?
[SPEAKER_00]: Got your business.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's awesome.
[SPEAKER_00]: Man, and you got a kid.
[SPEAKER_00]: You got a son.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it sounds like you're doing a good job already, like honestly, here's the thing, I wouldn't worry about it too much.
[SPEAKER_00]: You got to watch an educational movie, there's like good educational movies, there's documentaries, there's nature programs.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's cool stuff to watch and healthy stuff to watch and it's perfectly fine.
[SPEAKER_00]: And you don't have an on a freaking iPad or an iPhone.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was at an event, we'll say, and the event was, let's say, about three and a half hours long.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it was, there was a kid that was probably, probably around the stage, like three or four, was literally on an iPad, like fingers moving on the iPad for three and a half straight hours.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you got your kid watching the occasional movie, you know, maybe he's watching a half an hour of a movie Well, you guys are getting dinner ready or something like that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe he's watching 45 minutes of a movie while you are You know while you're growing well, you're doing work and home while your wife is growing something.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's reasons why you know it's like okay
[SPEAKER_00]: and you've got to watch in some good stuff, you know, I watched freaking, what was it?
[SPEAKER_00]: Sesame Street, when I was a kid, that's a half an hour program.
[SPEAKER_00]: I probably watched that, oh, I watched Batman and Robin, what the cartoon?
[SPEAKER_00]: No, like those weird men.
[SPEAKER_01]: Live action?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I'm talking about?
[SPEAKER_00]: The show, the old- Yeah, like the show, with the Kabam and the Helm, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: So those are, I watched those pretty consistently as a kid.
[SPEAKER_00]: Saturday morning cartoons, 100%
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I mean, I don't think that's our whole generation group doing that.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't think we're like too twisted or anything.
[SPEAKER_00]: Sorry, I think you're in a good spot.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I will say that the three-olds are a little bit tricky.
[SPEAKER_00]: Three-olds, a little bit tough because some forthcoming activities, they're just out of reach right now.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're just out of reach right now.
[SPEAKER_00]: Next year or so, you're going to be able to really expand what you make available to him.
[SPEAKER_00]: The building toys, the blocks, the labels, the talk or trucks, the bow and arrow, the phone bow and arrow thing, the nerf ball, the nerf guns, the jungle gym, like all these things are common, they're right around the horizon.
[SPEAKER_00]: And once that happens, like you can, there's no reason for anything else other than all those things.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, when I had this thing from my son, he had an area in our yard that he called his area.
[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it was just dirt and mud and shovels and green army men and tanks and bazookas and half tracks and little side car motorcycles like just war scene.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the hose would get put in there and the shovels would come out.
[SPEAKER_00]: Fox holes would be in dug.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was a disaster for, you know,
[SPEAKER_00]: What is that lawn manicuring?
[SPEAKER_00]: It was no there was rivers out there You know the water bill crept up because there was white water activities going down with British commandos and kayaks and stuff like this But do this kid was out there for hours with his buddies hours and hours and hours and hours
[SPEAKER_00]: So, that's, you know, set something up like that for your kid, and then when they think just a little bit beyond that is bike skateboards, basketballs, footballs, Nerf guns, more Nerf guns, BB guns, like it's, it's going to be on.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I wouldn't sweat this too bad.
[SPEAKER_00]: It sounds like you're in a good spot.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're minimizing it as much as you can, and he's about to hit an age where the whole world opens up to him.
[SPEAKER_00]: Could be good to go, man.
[SPEAKER_00]: Don't worry about it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Little movie now and again, you know, you'd be fine.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what I got.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it makes sense because everything that's on a screen will say because that's a super general thing right a screen and then there's this everything's not created equal on the screen, you know, so there's like things that's a kid at whatever age can watch on a screen that can be, you know, whatever whatever you want to sign to it, whether it be damaging or just, you know, uh,
[SPEAKER_01]: intrusive or held hold his development back or something like this right and then there's over here which could be straight up helpful like straight like you mentioned sesame street by the way if you remember sesame street was pretty educational.
[SPEAKER_01]: They were talking about words and consonants and vowels and all this other stuff So I think sometimes we can be like oh iPad bad 100% under all circumstances bad now an argument can be made that like hey
[SPEAKER_01]: If this kid never gets in front of an iPad, that's beneficial for XYZ region and I believe that that is correct, I believe.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I do also at the same time believe that there are things whether it be on an iPad or just a TV screen which is kind of different in a lot of ways.
[SPEAKER_01]: There are some things on there that aren't terrible, that are actually can be helpful.
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, the thing is like, anything where if it's like, okay, if that, if, okay, especially during
[SPEAKER_01]: If they now become addicted to that thing, and it's like getting in the way of other development or other interests and stuff like that, we're now they don't want to do anything.
[SPEAKER_01]: They just want to be on the iPad, you know, because of certain things, certain addictive things that they're watching, and they're locked into it, you know that, because from what I understand, that's the thing when they're locked into it, because let's see, you word what Jen acts, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we're Jen acts.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, consider.
[SPEAKER_01]: watching movies like we all watch freaking movies dumb movies too by the way um scary movies you know whatever it's like it's not necessarily bad for you but this from what I understand it's like if you what if me knew and you know let's say our wise our families we're all watching the movie we all share that experience together when you're locked into like a screen you're essentially blocking out the rest of the world you know and I guess that can have like some effects so I think I think
[SPEAKER_01]: It's very general because, you know, this face is a lot of details and this kind of stuff.
[SPEAKER_01]: If they're intentional, which they are, they're going to be just fine.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because you're not using it actively using it as a babysitter.
[SPEAKER_01]: Seems like they agree.
[SPEAKER_01]: You can be fine.
[SPEAKER_01]: Good to go.
[SPEAKER_01]: Good to go.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but we do fall into that.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think I don't know you definitely modern parents can fall into like all right, just give me the iPad Rollier, yeah, fully and on the other side too, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I'm just saying like, you know, if you be conscious of these kinds of things Because you can read whether it be on the internet or on the news or whatever, they're like, oh, yeah, screen time.
[SPEAKER_01]: They just say screen time, but screen time is very broad.
[SPEAKER_01]: So they just will say, hey, screen time bad.
[SPEAKER_01]: So then now they'll feel guilty.
[SPEAKER_01]: If the kid is enjoying like literally a movie on the TV, one that's like, you know, since 19, 15, 20 or whatever, movies been up, you know, kind of a thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's good to go.
[SPEAKER_00]: So that is a little excerpt of what we are doing on the Jocco Underground Podcast.
