A Note About The Adverts
In order to allow us to make these stories we offer a premium subscription and run adverts. The adverts are not chosen by us, but played automatically depending on the platform you listen through (Apple Podcasts, Spotify, etc) and the country you live in. The adverts may even be different if you listen to the story twice.
We have had a handful of instances where an advert has played that is not suitable for a family audience, despite the podcast clearly being labelled for children. If you’re concerned about an advert you hear, please contact the platform you are listening to directly. Spotify, in particular, has proven problematic in the past, for both inappropriate adverts and the volume at which the adverts play. If you find this happening, please let Spotify know via their Facebook customer care page.
As creators, we want your child’s experience to be a pleasurable one. Running adverts is necessary to allow us to operate, but please do consider the premium subscription service as an alternative – it’s advert free.
Speaker 1: Hey yo, Hello, I'm Josephine and this is the Animal
Tales podcast. There are over one hundred extra stories on

and this is a taster of another one. To find
out how to become a Premium member, please visit Animaltales
dot uk and remember, for a tiny fee, all the
stories are advert free. Pace is a premium member from
South Carolina, USA, and he would like a story with
a skink and an earwig. Don't forget to listen to
the animal facts after the story to learn more about
these creatures. For now, it's time to sit back and
get comfy, because it's time to begin the Monster Truck.
Children had been playing on the lawn during the day,
but now that evening had arrived they had returned indoors.
The yard was peaceful once more. Pace, a five lined skink,
scuttled across the lip of the sandbox, where not an
hour ago, sand castles and tunnels had been created and
demolished over and over again. There were still toys everywhere,
scattered across the sand and grass, Not to mention empty
drinking glasses and crumb filled plates. Pace made a point
of visiting one of these, and was rewarded by a
forgotten segment of cookie. A short distance away, one of
the children's toys gleamed in the low sunlight. It was
a bright red monster truck with a yellow eye on
each side panel and large, chunky wheels lifting the truck
up above the ground. There were smaller toy cars dotted
around it, some upside down, some on their sides, but
the monster truck towered over them. All. That looks just
the right size for me, thought the five lined skink,
as he considered the size of the doors. I would
probably fit inside there perfectly. He scuttled through the grass
to the monster truck's wheels, climbing up the bulky tires
to the door. Pleasingly, Pace found it easy to open.
Ahh no, don't eat me, screamed a tiny creature from within.
It was an earwig, the sort of small insect that
skinks liked to eat, But this one was sat on
the edge of the driver's seat and appeared to have
been reaching for the steering wheel. You pretending to drive
the truck, wondered Pace. I I might have been trembled
the earwig. I just wanted to see what it would
be like, please say you're not going to eat me.
I'm not going to eat you, said Pace, reassuringly. I'm
here for the same reason you are. I just wanted
to sit inside. Relaxing, the earwig scooted over to the
passenger seat. I'm a little too small to reach properly,
and I sure can't see out of the window, said
the earwig. But you look just the right size. Let's
see if that's true, smiled Pace as he slid into
the seat. He had to tuck his long blue tail
out of the way as he closed the door. Well
will you look at that. I'm a perfect fit you are,
said the earwig with delight. You really are. My name's Pace,
said the skink. What's yours? Ah, it's Earwig, I think,
said the earwig. You're an earwig, called earwig, repeated Pace,
making sure he'd understood that correctly. That's right, nodded the insect.
He didn't appear to think it was a problem. Outside,
the sun had dipped behind the house, throwing the garden
into shade. It would be getting dark soon. Inside the
monster truck, Pace gripped the steering wheel. I wonder what
it would be like to drive it for real, he
said dreamily. Would you like to find out, asked Earwig.
I would, admitted pace. But I know this is only
a toy. We can pretend, though, can't we. We don't
need to pretend, said Earwig with a shake of his antennae.
Without warning, the monster truck's engine ward into life. If
