Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to your true crime podcast. Julia Martin
was found dead in her home, and police later questioned
her daughter, Jasmine Harley, and others connected to the case.
You'll hear police interviews in which investigators ask about Martin's
death and what the people questioned knew.
Speaker 2: All right. Who do you got? I don't have anything.
Speaker 3: I mean, mind you, I am a little nervous.
Speaker 4: Hey, you know what?
Speaker 2: First off, I'm investigating Roger LeClerc. I know there's a
lot of talk going on out there and.
Speaker 5: Stuff like that.
Speaker 2: I'm a little anxious right now. You know what? That's understandable.
You know what that tells me? You're human. If you
weren't anxious, you weren't all nervous and turkey and stuff
like that, I would think there's something wrong.
Speaker 6: If you try to come in acting all cool and calm.
Speaker 7: And so pretty much after this, I can just walk.
Speaker 2: Out the door. Absolutely. You can walk out the door
anytime you want. There's no lock on that door.
Speaker 4: Okay, good. I mean, I'm comfortable. I just like.
Speaker 3: To go on my base.
Speaker 5: Okay, I have one question.
Speaker 8: Have people gotten convicted by this, but they could be
completely innocent?
Speaker 6: This is an instrument that's 100% accurate. I'm going to
tell you whether you're lying or not at the end
of this. Okay, whether you're being deceitful or not. Okay,
but I'm asking very specific questions. I don't care if
you stole a candy bar this morning from the store.
Speaker 2: That's not what I'm here for. I'm here regarding the
death of my mom. Of your mom?
Speaker 3: Yes.
Speaker 2: To my own heart.
Speaker 6: You got probably one of the best examiners in New
York State right now.
Speaker 2: Okay?
Speaker 6: Now, by my notions, okay, I've been doing this for
a while. I've been doing this since 2007. And this
helps us either focus in on somebody or move on
not having to focus in on somebody. I don't want
to have to focus on you anymore, meaning me, the investigators.
Speaker 2: Right, of course. That's why we do this. Okay. You
were gone, you and Knowledge were gone. You guys returned
at some point in time. You attempted to call her,
she didn't answer.
Speaker 6: You returned home and that you entered through a back
door that is commonly left unlocked when you're not home
just so you can enter.
Speaker 2: But the front is usually locked. Always. Okay. So you
go to the back door, you enter. What happens after
you enter?
Speaker 3: It was quiet. I walked in the house, walked in
her room, looked on her bed.
Speaker 5: She wasn't there.
Speaker 3: I looked on the floor.
Speaker 2: Okay, then you found her.
Speaker 3: Okay.
Speaker 5: And then I freaked out.
Speaker 2: Did you go directly to her room when you got there? Always. Okay.
Every time.
Speaker 3: Every day.
Speaker 8: I was raised in her room first just to make
sure she's in bed and then.
Speaker 3: Right.
Speaker 2: Okay.
Speaker 6: My understanding at this time, because there's not a full
medical examiner's report yet.
Speaker 2: Right.
Speaker 3: Well, I know that they ruled out power play.
Speaker 2: I know that's what she did. Right. And that's basically
what I'm going to say to you.
Speaker 6: But I'm going to word a couple of these questions to...
I'm trying to think of which way to word them.
Speaker 2: Because the wording of the questions are very specific.
Speaker 6: And I want to make sure me and you are
on the same boat.
Speaker 3: I'm so on purpose.
Speaker 5: I have nothing to be nervous about. Well, you should
be nervous.
Speaker 2: You're at the police station.
Speaker 3: You're talking about your mother's death.
Speaker 2: So that's natural.
Speaker 3: I mean, don't.
Speaker 2: Yes, absolutely.
Speaker 3: I so wonder if he's in there doing his.
Speaker 2: I hope he is.
Speaker 3: So he can just clear it in there.
Speaker 8: Oh, my God.
Speaker 2: Now, if you suspect somebody... For whatever reason.
Speaker 4: Oh, believe me, I've been thinking about this.
Speaker 6: Well, I'm just saying, though, this will tell me, though,
if you even have an inkling, okay?
Speaker 2: And you're telling me no just because you don't have evidence.
I'm not asking if you have evidence of somebody doing it.
Speaker 3: If I think I know, right?
Speaker 6: If you've got a suspicion, do you know who?
Speaker 4: I have a couple, but I don't want to throw
them to you.
Speaker 3: I'm waiting for the answer.
Speaker 9: Well, it's not about throwing them.
Speaker 2: You should be throwing them.
Speaker 9: But do you.
Speaker 5: Know what I mean, though?
Speaker 4: I don't want to falsify evidence.
Speaker 2: It wouldn't be falsifying, okay?
Speaker 6: We've got to work off of evidence and information gathered,
and it's the police's responsibility to track that down and say, hey,
you know what?
Speaker 2: You're wrong because of this. Thank you. There's great information,
but we at least.
Speaker 4: And you know what?
Speaker 2: It doesn't not... It may not help us find out
who did it, but it helps us.
Speaker 4: Find out who didn't do it, okay?
Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying?
Speaker 2: And that's just as important in this type of work.
Have you ever driven over the posted speed limit?
Speaker 4: No.
Speaker 2: Am I wearing a tie?
Speaker 5: Yes.
Speaker 2: Do you suspect someone of causing the death of your mother? No.
Do you know who caused the death of your mother? No.
Did you cause the death of your mother? No. Okay.
And I'm going to go right off the bat is
that you know who did this. I'll tell you why. Okay. Well,
you do. Okay. Look at your name. Your name's a
nice diagonal. Okay. Nice diagonal in there. Because why? Because
that's your name. There's no stress. That's how I took
away the situational stress.
Speaker 6: Now I ask you, again, do you know who caused
and you start banging on the stress.
Speaker 2: You know where else you.
Speaker 6: Start banging on the stress pretty good?
Speaker 2: Did you cause the death of your mother? Look at that.
Speaker 4: I wasn't even there.
Speaker 2: Do you know who caused the death of your mother? Well,
I believe you do. I believe you have.
Speaker 6: Some information about maybe two brothers or somebody that might
be involved.
Speaker 10: And for you to not get any deeper than you are,
I think that's where we need to, we've got to
clarify this. We've got to help ourselves out now. We've
got to think of the rest of our lives at
this point, okay? And I think you have some very
detailed knowledge in your head about somebody you were willing
to put on your arm at one point in your life.
Speaker 3: He was with me.
Speaker 2: Okay. Well, I'm just saying. So I need you to
tell me what it is you know specifically. I don't. Well,
you do. You do know something about two brothers that
were going out there that day. That maybe while you
were gone and met them and then you left and
went back to the city. No. Okay, Jasmine, I'm trying
to tell you right now. That, do you, do you think,
where do you think I got this info from just now?
Speaker 3: The detector probably, you know?
Speaker 2: Well, what do you think?
Speaker 7: Was it from me?
Speaker 2: Where do you think? Okay, let's use our head here.
You're smarter than this. Okay? Matter of fact, you're trying
to over smart it. No, I'm not. I'm trying to
figure this out.
Speaker 6: You're trying to, you're trying to make something in your
head right now, which is natural.
Speaker 4: No, I'm not.
Speaker 3: Okay, I'm leaving. Okay? Yeah, I'm going.
Speaker 5: Because you're not allowed to be in the kitchen alive.
Speaker 2: Okay. All right, Jasmine.
Speaker 3: Who would have just thought, like, seven months just of love,
and you would think somebody could just do that. I'm
glad I not care. He's brainwashed me.
Speaker 4: He's abused me.
Speaker 2: Of course, and his brother. That's why my grandma has
a restraining order.
Speaker 4: And probably his brothers. Like, they're so, they make you
feel like Talk and you die.
Speaker 5: Like, just talk and you're going to die. He even
told me, was it yesterday, that if I.
Speaker 4: Were, because when you were walking, I wanted to tell
you so bad.
Speaker 3: I know you did.
Speaker 4: I know you did.
Speaker 3: So knowledge had found out how much my mom's insurance was.
She made you the beneficiary? I wasn't the beneficiary of.
Speaker 4: Because she had.
Speaker 5: At first, it was her ex-husband. And I guess that she.
Speaker 2: Just took him out.
Speaker 3: She didn't make me one. She just took him out
because the next person is.
Speaker 4: Your daughter or your children or whatever.
Speaker 2: So she just figured, I'll figure it out that way.
And so he was to file a paper or something.
Speaker 8: He was talking to his brother and I just didn't
think that he could, that they were gonna do it.
Speaker 3: Like, I'm just thinking it's all talk.
Speaker 4: You know, people talk.
Speaker 2: People say anything.
Speaker 3: Oh, well, maybe if we kill her, the money will
come and we'll get it.
Speaker 2: Da-da-da-da. And I'm just like.
Speaker 5: Like, whatever.
Speaker 8: And then they were sitting there saying, oh, if you talk,
we're going to kill you.
Speaker 3: If you tell anybody, we're going to kill you.
Speaker 8: And that's, like, the saddest thing is, like, and I
was in there thinking, and then, like, literally last week
he told me, like, in, like, indefinite, like, oh, yeah,
my brothers did it, and they.
Speaker 2: Don't care, da, da, da.
Speaker 3: If you talk, you're going down, too.
Speaker 4: I said, I didn't do it.
Speaker 3: I said, the saddest thing is, I took the test.
Speaker 8: The only thing that I lied about was saying I
didn't know.
Speaker 2: That's it. I didn't do it. And that's why we're
here today now.
Speaker 3: I didn't say that I, you know what I mean?
Speaker 2: Like, you're the one that ran. So who actually was
in the house and killed your mother?
Speaker 4: No, Juan and Devante Devine.
Speaker 2: How did they kill your mother?
Speaker 4: They strangled her.
Speaker 2: Okay, so how did they get there?
Speaker 3: I was picking them up and brought them to the house.
Speaker 2: I was next door. Is your mom sleeping? No, my
mother wasn't home.
Speaker 3: She didn't get out of work.
Speaker 2: So are they hiding in the house? Yep. So they
hid in the house, and then you and Mal would
tell your mother that you're going to the city to
sell a phone? Yeah.
Speaker 4: Come back, we're driving, whatever.
Speaker 3: He gets a phone call, and then we go back
to the house.
Speaker 2: A phone call from who? His brother. Which one? My brother.
Speaker 5: And then.
Speaker 2: What's he saying in this phone call?
Speaker 3: Oh, it's done or something.
Speaker 2: Like, he thought it was.
Speaker 3: Done, and I'm in shock. Like, what do you mean?
Speaker 2: Like, whatever. What were they saying?
Speaker 8: They were like, oh, well, she struggled, and, like, She
tried to stab him with a fork. I guess she
had a fork in her hand, and she was trying
to stab him with a fork. And she put up
a fight, and they held her down.
Speaker 3: They literally said, like, they burst in the door.
Speaker 2: Where'd they hide? In the closet. In her bedroom closet?
Speaker 3: In the spare bedroom.
Speaker 8: But they said they walked in the room, and, like,
she was laying there eating, and they burst out on
the door, and she said, what the F? and, like,
I guess they tried to put a bag over her head,
but she ripped it off, and they had latex gloves on,
I guess. She stabbed him with a fork. I guess
they said that she had food over her mouth. She
had food all over her mouth?
Speaker 4: Like, all over her mouth.
Speaker 8: So I'm pretty sure she probably fell asleep in her
food when they scared her and when they walked in.
Speaker 3: Vontae said that he hopped on top of her.
Speaker 2: And, like, choked her out. So did you guys have
that planned that night to do this?
Speaker 4: I didn't plan this.
Speaker 2: No, no.
Speaker 11: Okay, Jez, listen.
Speaker 7: We're trying to figure out what the pre-plan was.
Speaker 3: Because you said he.
Speaker 4: Found out about this.
Speaker 3: Him and his brother planned this, talked about this.
Speaker 2: Oh, no, I didn't talk to nobody. And that's what
I'm saying. We were being told that you were involved
in planning all this.
Speaker 3: I wasn't involved in planning all this. Literally. He found
out about the money. How did he find out.
Speaker 2: About the money?
Speaker 5: He must have found the paper.
Speaker 4: Because me and my mom were talking about it one day,
but I didn't think he was listening.
Speaker 3: Because she had told me, she was like, I want
you to know that I did change it.
Speaker 8: Because she's been, what, divorced four years? Four or five
years now, I think. And she just got around to
change it. And I'm thinking to myself, that's a little late,
but whatever.
Speaker 3: I can't complain. I can't go with you for that.
It's whatever. And he must have overheard or found the
piece of paper.
Speaker 2: I mean.
Speaker 3: I did not plan this.
Speaker 8: I wasn't involved with this at all.
Speaker 4: The first words they told me before, if anything, if
I tell, I die.
Speaker 12: If I tell, I die.
Speaker 3: And they kept running that. through my head.
Speaker 7: Jazz, I don't doubt that these guys threatened you right
from the get-go.
Speaker 5: I was scared.
Speaker 4: That we don't doubt.
Speaker 5: We're not doubting that.
Speaker 7: Like I said, you're here to talk.
Speaker 5: You want to get this off your chest.
Speaker 2: I am.
Speaker 5: But I just want to make sure that you understand that,
you know, we're going to eventually talk to everybody.
Speaker 3: That's right.
Speaker 7: So try to remember all the details that you can
so that they don't pop something in there and we're like, okay,
why didn't Jazz tell us this?
Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying?
Speaker 7: So just, like I said, try to be as truthful
as you possibly can.
Speaker 5: And try to remember everything that can come to you.
Speaker 3: And Vontae was like, give me $ 200 or you die. Okay.
And that's when he had my mom's credit card and
he gave it to me. And I went inside, used
the bank things.
Speaker 5: So he took the credit card from her?
Speaker 2: Uh-huh. Okay.
Speaker 5: What else did they take from her?
Speaker 2: Do you know?
Speaker 8: Her tablet, which I got back, but they took the
SIM card out and then the tablet got broke.
Speaker 3: And they took her Capital One credit card.
Speaker 5: So that's what you used up at the gas station?
Speaker 3: I used her bank card.
Speaker 4: You used her bank card.
Speaker 3: Her ATM card.
Speaker 2: And you took out a total of? $ 600. And then
you gave Daquan $ 200?
Speaker 4: I gave Devante.
Speaker 2: Devante $ 200? Yes. So the $ 200 that you gave them
that night, that's the most that they've made off this
whole thing? Yeah.
Speaker 11: $ 200?
Speaker 3: So far.
Speaker 7: Because what was the agreement?
Speaker 3: Oh, they wanted $ 15, 000.
Speaker 5: $ 15, 000?
Speaker 2: Mm-hmm. A piece.
Speaker 3: So the plan was they get $ 15, 000.
Speaker 2: A piece, and how much do you get?
Speaker 7: I get the rest.
Speaker 3: But I do know that they burn their clothes in
the backyards.
Speaker 2: Of their house? Of their house.
Speaker 3: They had a fire that same night in the backyard.
Speaker 2: I did. You called your mom?
Speaker 3: I called her at 9.30.
Speaker 2: I called her. Yep. For what?
Speaker 5: I don't know, honestly.
Speaker 12: Because you knew the dad would dump it.
Speaker 4: Because I wanted to just think it wasn't possible.
Speaker 3: She would pick up the phone.
Speaker 2: Okay.
Speaker 3: If they maybe messed up.
Speaker 2: Okay.
Speaker 3: If they didn't have a chance.
Speaker 8: Everything I told you after, like this part right here,
is the truth. I came home, walked through the back door,
I said her name, walked in her room, she wasn't
on her bed, I found her on the floor, and I.
Speaker 3: Panicked and I freaked out in the bathroom.
Speaker 4: That's literally what happened.
Speaker 8: Because the saddest thing is, and I knew it, the
part that I was going to fail was knowing that's it.
Speaker 3: Because I wasn't there. I didn't cause it. I didn't
plan it. He said that if I don't come back,
he's going to tell everything.
Speaker 8: And I'm going to get more time because he's going
to lie and say that I planned all this. And
that if I don't come back, he's going to have
me and my grandma killed and my sister and my.
Speaker 3: Dad and my aunt and my whole family down, down, down.
Speaker 7: Well, he's scared right now because he knows, like I said,
that he's unidentified.
Speaker 2: Right.
Speaker 4: I'm saying that that's why he's.
Speaker 3: Saying all these things.
Speaker 7: He's trying to scare you into not being comfortable.
Speaker 3: And I told him, I said, if that's what you
want to do, then that's fine.
Speaker 7: So at no time you're telling me you didn't ask
him to harm your mother or do anything to your mother?
At no time you told him you wanted your mother dead?
Speaker 4: No.
Speaker 2: Okay.
Speaker 4: I mean, I may have said that to my mother. Like,
I hate you.
Speaker 3: And she told me, and me too.
Speaker 2: So you didn't think that they were going to?
Speaker 3: I honestly didn't think it was going to work. And
then I'm praying.
Speaker 8: When I called my mother, that was me basically praying
that it didn't work.
Speaker 7: Okay, so what conversation did you have before when he
planned this?
Speaker 3: With knowledge?
Speaker 2: Yeah.
Speaker 3: And he was like, oh, well, why don't we? And
I'm like, why?
Speaker 2: Like, what's the purpose? Like, what? I mean, what?
Speaker 3: Because of money?
Speaker 2: Right. But no offense, it's still not even here yet. Okay. Well,
you knew they were planning it.
Speaker 5: Planning it, but not initiating it.
Speaker 4: Okay, well, I'll go with you on that, but maybe
you didn't initiate this. But you had knowledge of why
we were doing this.
Speaker 3: They were the ones talking about it. They were the ones, like,
sitting there, and I was just sitting there.
Speaker 4: Because, like I'm telling you, I didn't think it was
going to go through.
Speaker 3: I honestly didn't think it was going to go through. And, yes,
it should have come 9-1-1 right when I heard them
even discussing it.
Speaker 5: It's even in foreign people.
Speaker 3: Like I said, I was scared. And I would ask
his brothers, like, y'all want to make some money? And
I'm thinking to myself, what? I'm sitting back, like, just thinking, what? And, yeah,
I said, brothers, do you guys want to make some money?
Speaker 8: And then they're sitting there talking about.
Speaker 3: It, thinking, oh, how is it going to happen? When
is it going to happen?
Speaker 7: And I'm like, why?
Speaker 3: In the back of my mind, I'm thinking they're just talking.
Speaker 9: So they're talking right in front of you.
Speaker 2: Oh, right in front of me. Right in front of me.
Speaker 3: And I'm thinking, I'm like, it's not going to happen.
They're not going to.
Speaker 2: Go through with it. Well, we're here because of what
you guys did in Ontario.
Speaker 3: What?
Speaker 2: What? Mm-hmm. Okay. You familiar with Jasmine and Jasmine's mother?
I'm familiar with Jasmine and her mother, yeah. Okay. That's
what I'm talking about. Oh.
Speaker 3: What do you know about Jasmine's mom and stuff?
Speaker 2: I don't know nothing about her, Jasmine. Okay.
Speaker 7: Okay, can I just, like, be honest with you right
from the drop here, okay?
Speaker 4: They've kind of told us that you have knowledge of what.
Speaker 7: Happened to her mom, okay?
Speaker 3: Like, it must be a real good sign.
Speaker 5: This is kind of your opportunity to say, hey, listen,
you know what?
Speaker 3: I was in tough times, okay?
Speaker 2: I'm a young kid.
Speaker 3: I needed some money. They said something stupid to me.
Speaker 4: I made a stupid decision. Here we go. This is
what happened. Because they've already told.
Speaker 2: Us what happened. I didn't know. You want to know
what happened? I want to know what happened. This is
what happened. I brought Vata in, right? That's my man's,
you know? I bring him in, you know? He talk about, oh,
now they got some plan. I'm like, what? What you
talking about?
Speaker 9: Then they come in my house, I'm about to talk
about some shit like that.
Speaker 2: I'm like, I'm just being.
Speaker 9: Quiet because I'm like, y'all really, like, y'all really sat
down and thought of this in y'all head?
Speaker 2: And really sat down and said... So what was their conversation?
Speaker 3: Tell us what they said.
Speaker 2: They was like, oh, we got a plan to get
some money.
Speaker 6: I'm like.
Speaker 2: All right, what is it? But he wouldn't tell me
because I'm not close.
Speaker 3: With him or nothing.
Speaker 2: He don't like me.
Speaker 9: He don't like me because me and his brother got
a closer relationship than him.
Speaker 2: He don't like me. You were at the house. You
were part of this deal. We know this already.
Speaker 5: So we just need to know, you know, what the
totality of it is.
Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying?
Speaker 4: You need to try to save yourself at this point
in time.
Speaker 2: Maybe you didn't think it was actually going to happen. What? Oh,
I didn't touch it. Well, you were in the closet.
And I think maybe you just maybe hollered out. No, no.
I did not touch it. Okay, well, tell us what happened.
Tell us what happened. All right. You didn't go to plan. Look,
I was there, right?
Speaker 3: Okay.
Speaker 2: I was there. And then, we was in the closet.
And I was scared. I was so f * *
* ing scared. But I remember they left. Who left?
Speaker 3: Tell me who left.
Speaker 2: Jasmine Knowledge. Okay. And we went to the door. And
I was like, I can't do this. Like, my heart
would beat.
Speaker 12: Right.
Speaker 2: Yeah. I can't do this. I can't do this. So
this nigga Vontae looking like, bruh. Come on, bruh. So
right there, I'm like, I can't. I can't. I'm like,
I'm really like, I'm in hell. I'm like, I can't, bruh.
You're freaking out. I can't, yeah. Like, I can't. Like,
I can't go in there.
Speaker 9: Like, you know, it's different from shooting somebody, which I
never did.
Speaker 2: Right. But shooting somebody and just going in there and
doing something. Like, I don't have the heart to do it.
I don't have the heart. Okay, so how did he
do it?
Speaker 9: I don't know, but I went back in the room
and I got on my phone because I was.
Speaker 2: Like, I can't do this. So you got on your
phone and you did what? I got on my phone
and I just sat there in the closet.
Speaker 5: So you went back to the closet?
Speaker 11: Yeah.
Speaker 3: You weren't in the room when this happened?
Speaker 2: No. Okay, so I was in the trailer. It's pretty small.
What did you hear then? I didn't hear nothing.
Speaker 9: If you're in the closet, it's like in the room
and in the closet. The closet is like in the room.
The closet is over there.
Speaker 2: Okay. The room is over here. Mm-hmm.
Speaker 9: And I was like, bro, I can't do this. Like,
I'm scared as shit. Vontae stayed at the door, but
I was like, bro, I can't do this. So I
went back, and I don't know what happened. He come in,
they come in, bust in the door. Like, bro, come on,
come on, we all, we all, we all, we all,
come on.
Speaker 5: And what does he say to you?
Speaker 2: I don't know. He was like, bro.
Speaker 9: He's like, he bust in, and I guess he was
eating with him, and then, like, he said, like, she, like,
screamed or got panicked that he, like, bust.
Speaker 2: In, because he, like, Like, you know, yeah.
Speaker 9: It was like, it's like, so she's like, I don't
know what happened, but he's like, yeah, we gotta go.
Speaker 2: We gotta go.
Speaker 3: All right, so does he tell you how this goes down?
Speaker 2: No, man. Did he tell you how he did it?
I didn't want to talk about it after that. Yeah,
but some part of you wants to know how it happened.
And I know knowledge ass. When you guys got picked up,
you got picked back up at the church there when
you walked out, and the car had to go around
you and saw you and told us all about you.
That's how we know you.
Speaker 4: Yeah.
Speaker 2: All right, so that's what I'm saying. This is really silly.
Speaker 6: We're not going to play games, and I'm shooting straight
with you, man.
Speaker 2: That's why you're here. I don't know you. We didn't
just flip a coin and say, hey, does this guy
know them guys? We kind of talked to him.
Speaker 5: All right.
Speaker 2: All right, so you're here because we know you're involved.
I heard you got stabbed with a fork.
Speaker 3: I got stabbed with a fork.
Speaker 5: Did somebody get stabbed with a fork?
Speaker 4: No.
Speaker 7: Do you know if your buddy got, Devante got stabbed
with a fork or something?
Speaker 3: Did she try to stab him?
Speaker 2: I don't know. He didn't tell me none of that.
He didn't tell you none of that? No.
Speaker 9: Like, this is how the day started. I'm sleeping in
my bed, right? And then I wake up, somebody's above me,
and it's knowledge. Talk about, come on, come on. I'm like,
what are you talking about, come on? He's like, it's
happening today. I'm like, bruh, what do you mean it's
happening today?
Speaker 2: I didn't agree to do none of this. Right. And
then Vontae's like, come on, man, bruh. I'm like, all right.
Because that's like. Now, you guys were supposed to get $ 15, 000
for this. No, I wasn't. You were supposed to get paid.
I guess. How much? You only got, what, $ 200? I
don't know. You didn't know, because you didn't stop and
use the credit card in the ATM on the way home. Oh,
not me. Don't say we did, because I didn't use
no credit card.
Speaker 9: So don't say we, because I didn't clarify.
Speaker 2: So I'm asking you to clarify for me. I don't know.
She gave Vontae money. How much? I don't know. I
don't know. He didn't share any with you? Huh? No,
he don't be at my house like that. He went
to his girlfriend's house.
Speaker 9: You know how people were traumatized.
Speaker 2: He just wanted to go and hang with his girl. Okay.
So I didn't. That night we separated. That night we separated. Okay.
And you went home and he went to your girlfriend's house?
I went home. But you burnt your clothes too. Huh?
You burnt your clothes.
Speaker 3: No.
Speaker 2: You burnt your clothes. He did?
Speaker 3: Yeah.
Speaker 2: He did.
Speaker 9: Well, no, he burnt all of them because that night
he was paranoid.
Speaker 2: So he was like, you got burned.
Speaker 10: I'm like, bruh.
Speaker 3: And where were those burned at?
Speaker 2: In your backyard? Um, I think.
Speaker 5: Okay.
Speaker 3: You weren't there when they got burned?
Speaker 2: I was, but I think it was in the backyard, yeah. Okay, okay.
I came out and it was like 40 seconds.
Speaker 7: Can I talk to you a little bit about something
that they both kind of asked, that they told me?
Speaker 2: What?
Speaker 7: Was that there was, at some point in time, you
guys were in your basement.
Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
Speaker 5: Can you tell me about that?
Speaker 2: That's what I said. They came over. Okay.
Speaker 9: And the day before it happened, they came over discussing shit.
Speaker 2: I'm like, bruh.
Speaker 3: Who else was there?
Speaker 2: Huh? It was me.
Speaker 3: I'm just trying to clarify with you because of the
stories that we got.
Speaker 4: We just want to make sure.
Speaker 2: I'm just mad.
Speaker 9: I'm just mad because I got brought into this shit
and me doing a good deed. Well, and that's why
you got to get out in front of us and
tell us how that went down. For me doing a
good deed and bringing my friend in and I got
tangled into it.
Speaker 2: Yeah, so he dragged your ass into it.
Speaker 9: We're proud of him here.
Speaker 2: So that's why we need to know exactly how it happened.
Speaker 9: How would you feel if just one day they talk
about something, next day somebody in your face And they
tell you to come on. Like, I had no intentions
of touching this lady.
Speaker 2: No anything. I did not go to the house thinking
I was going to do anything. I thought this was joking. Okay.
I thought I was in the car.
Speaker 5: So what did you think you were going to go
do at.
Speaker 3: The trailer then?
Speaker 2: I don't know.
Speaker 9: Like, you know how people just do stuff and they
over their head.
Speaker 2: So what were you.
Speaker 5: Thinking while you were sitting in a closet though?
Speaker 2: We had this in the class for like an hour
and 30 minutes. So what was the plan? Were you
supposed to wait a certain amount of time? The plan was...
The plan was basically... I don't know the plan. I forgot. Well,
obviously Jasmine and Niles leave you two there.
Speaker 3: Yeah.
Speaker 2: Do you know where they went? They went... They went
to go get an alibi, you know? What was the
plan for that?
Speaker 6: Huh?
Speaker 2: You know, what the alibi was going to be?
Speaker 9: To go to Tops or go to, say he was
going to get his cousin's phone or whatever the fuck
it is.
Speaker 5: Who makes this plan?
Speaker 2: Who's the, like, was it now? They come in.
Speaker 3: And now it says, hey, you know, we got a plan.
Speaker 4: My girl's mom, like, I'll just go.
Speaker 2: They go right there. They go like this, all right.
Speaker 9: Because Devontae and him meet someday, all right? Then they
come to the house to talk about it because he.
Speaker 2: Lived there and shit. So they were throwing out mad
ideas and shit.
Speaker 9: Like, blowing up the house, putting Zanz in her jewels,
doing some other shit. Like, putting Zanz in her shit
and all that other shit. Like, doing some real crazy shit. Like,
I'm like, yo, y'all really going to do that?
Speaker 7: And he's like, yeah.
Speaker 2: And then, like, Jasmine had said something. Or they was
all conversing and shit. I'm playing Black Ops 3. Because
this is back when I didn't have a job and
all I did was sleep. and play Black Ops 3
and play Xbox. So was Jasmine part of the plan
or two? Was she saying anything? Yeah.
Speaker 9: They, my, bruh, they came over already set like this
shit was planned three months ago.
Speaker 3: How much did they say they were going to pay him, Devontae?
Speaker 2: Huh? They said, they said, um, they first, all right, so, like,
I was not in this. He don't like me. He don't,
he don't like me.
Speaker 3: Yeah, just tell me what you're doing.
Speaker 2: I'm telling you, I'm telling you. And Devontae was like,
he's supposed to get $ 30, 000 or whatever. Okay. And he
was like, split it because I want Kwame to come
with me. Okay. And he was like, no, no. And
I'm like, yeah.
Speaker 9: I'm like, bro, if you don't want me to go
or nothing like that, if you feel like, because he
thought I was a snitch or something like that.
Speaker 2: He thought I was a bitch or he thought I was,
you know. He's like, no, no. I'm like, bro, if
you don't want me to come, then I'm not going
to come. I don't care.
Speaker 9: I don't even want to do this. He was like, nah, bro,
I can't do it. You know, I need some, I
need my mans there.
Speaker 2: You know, I need. I need a backbone or, you know,
I need, I need to know, like.
Speaker 5: They basically just need you to go with them.
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know. So he split his $ 30, 000 with you. Yeah.
Or he wasn't going to go at all. Yeah. Because
he wanted you there. Yeah. Okay. And now I just
have to agree to that.
Speaker 9: Yeah, because I'm like, I'm not his big brother type
of shit like that. And I told him, I'm like, bro,
can we do this another day? Can we do this
another day? Because my hand is. And they said he
was rushing me.
Speaker 2: And he was rushing. He was saying some wild shit.
Like he was saying like some crazy wild shit to
make us do it. Like he was.
Speaker 9: He was like, bro, if you don't do this, if
you don't do this, I swear to God, he said
something like that.
Speaker 2: But he was, like, making it seem like we owed
him something. Okay.
Speaker 9: But we didn't, you know? But it was basically Vontae.
I was only there because Vontae wanted me. But he
was saying this shit to Vontae because I was only
on the board because Vontae was there.
Speaker 2: So he was saying that shit to Vontae.
Speaker 9: Vontae, I'm coming with him, you know? So he was
telling him, Vontae, if you don't do this, swear to God, this, that,
and the third, when your baby born, tell about his baby,
tell about, oh, um, And then when he's happy, he's like, oh, Vontae,
I'm going to get you locked up so I can have.
Speaker 2: You a kid or whatever. Like, crazy shit. Crazy shit.
He told his grandma. He told his grandma. You're at McDonald's.
Speaker 3: For a period of time.
Speaker 4: You're sitting down.
Speaker 3: And then you leave from there.
Speaker 5: Jazz and knowledge leave.
Speaker 2: Yeah. Right?
Speaker 4: She gets money out of an ATM?
Speaker 2: Yeah. Okay.
Speaker 5: She gets money out of an ATM and gives Devante?
Speaker 9: Yeah, gives Devante some.
Speaker 2: She gives me some. She gives me like $ 50.
Speaker 3: And how much did she give Devante? I don't know.
Speaker 2: I think it was like $ 150.
Speaker 5: Okay.
Speaker 7: So basically the plan was before this happened, the plan
was we're going to kill this woman for X amount
of dollars.
Speaker 5: Where was this money coming from?
Speaker 7: How are we going to give you.
Speaker 2: $ 30, 000?
Speaker 5: Did she say where she was going to get $ 30, 000 from?
Speaker 4: I don't know.
Speaker 7: You didn't get any money, except for that $ 50 that
you gave at McDonald's.
Speaker 4: Yeah.
Speaker 3: Okay.
Speaker 2: If I tell you how he did it and what
they did it for, can I go home? You need to.
Because I was not supposed to be part of it. Okay.
Speaker 3: Well, tell me what happened in that restaurant.
Speaker 2: I don't want to tell y'all unless I have a guarantee.
We can't guarantee that. But then I can't tell y'all.
Speaker 5: A good problem.
Speaker 2: We'll put it this way. You know that you're in trouble.
Speaker 4: Okay.
Speaker 12: I have not in any position to tell you that
I can bring you home or guarantee you that.
Speaker 2: I can't do that. Right. Alright, but I know that
you were in the bedroom. No, I wasn't.
Speaker 5: I know that you were in the bedroom.
Speaker 2: I wasn't. And then you know exactly how it happened. No.
But I was, I was, I was scared. Like, I
was scared. How did you? I didn't touch her. I
did not touch her. Okay. I promise, I did not
touch her.
Speaker 3: Okay.
Speaker 2: And I promise. I was in the room, but I
did not touch her. Then tell us what you saw. Alright,
I just saw it. That's why I told you, a pillow.
That's what I saw. Okay, so where was the pillow?
Did he knock her to the ground and shove it
out of her face? No, it was like... We, um,
he busted in right. And you're right behind him? I'm like,
I'm like, he's like, come on, bro. Come on. I
was like, bro. They bust in there. He bust in.
She like, she get up, like she on her plate flip.
She looked at him.
Speaker 9: She like, and then he like, he grabbed her. Like
he grabbed her by, by like not the head or something.
Like he was trying to do like, I don't know.
He was, he was trying to like kill it.
Speaker 4: Great.
Speaker 2: But she got, like, she big. So she was, like,
trying to move away from him and stuff like that.
Speaker 9: So she fell, like, she fell and hit the TV stand,
the little desk, and it fell over.
Speaker 2: And she was on the floor. But he had to
have the pool and went like that. And held it
over her face. All right.
Speaker 6: You're going to be under arrest for murder in the
first degree.
Speaker 2: All right? So I'm arresting all of you guys. For
murdering a first degree, for conspiring to have this plan
and to do this together.
Speaker 7: This is kind of your opportunity to come clean and
kind of save yourself at this point in time.
Speaker 2: Oh, I'm going to get tied. Okay. I didn't do it. Well.
Me or Jonathan didn't do it. Okay. I'm not going
to lie. Okay. All I'm good to go.
Speaker 11: Dropping them off. Taking them back up and then dropping
them back off.
Speaker 2: Okay.
Speaker 3: But tell me how it gets to this point.
Speaker 5: I mean, you didn't just pick them up and drop
them off and.
Speaker 3: Say, do what you want to do. I mean, obviously
there was some sort.
Speaker 5: Of information exchange.
Speaker 2: This is your time.
Speaker 7: This is your opportunity to, like I said, just give.
Speaker 5: It to me.
Speaker 12: And me and Jasmine were driving one day, and I
told her, flat out, you know, if you ever talk
to my mom, how you talk to your mom, I
really had to smack her. Her mom got into an argument.
And she kept saying, oh, I wish you were dead.
I wish you were dead. And she asked me, do
I know anybody?
Speaker 5: Jasmine asked you?
Speaker 2: Yes, I knew it. My first instinct was no.
Speaker 12: So I gave her two names because I honestly thought
they weren't going.
Speaker 5: To do it.
Speaker 2: And she said she would pay them from her mom's
401k or pension or whatever. Me, I knew them. We
have a history of it.
Speaker 12: So I thought they would say no because I was
going to offer them $ 2, 500.
Speaker 11: Because that was too low and they were going to
say no.
Speaker 2: That's what I was expecting.
Speaker 11: And I guess when we were talking to.
Speaker 2: Them, They said, yeah.
Speaker 11: And when they said, yeah, I'm not going to hold you.
Speaker 2: I was shocked.
Speaker 11: And I didn't expect it.
Speaker 12: To, like, actually go through because there's 2,500 on the table.
Speaker 11: That's what I previously. But when they said, yeah, I left.
Speaker 12: I went to go sit in the car. And Jasmine
was talking to him. Jasmine came home a half an
hour later, and we just left. And she tried to
tell me. I told her I didn't want to know.
Speaker 2: And Jasmine was like, I want to do it, and
I'll get it over with. And me, I'm trying to
change her mind. I told her, if you do this,
there's no going back. This is your mother.
Speaker 11: So she was like, yeah, I can't keep stressing myself out.
Speaker 12: I went to go pick them up, went back, and
they hid in the closet, and we left. I guess
the plan was to smother her, because that's the only,
because Jasmine said she told them how she eats and
all of that.
Speaker 2: And she eats, facing the TV with her back, and
took the door. Okay.
Speaker 11: And she's, her mother was like three years ago.
Speaker 2: So she says what to you? She wants what? She
wants it over with. Okay. Meaning to you? She wants
her mother to be killed. Okay.
Speaker 11: At the end game for me, was to get.
Speaker 2: My company out. Okay. What was your cost?
Speaker 4: $ 100, 000.
Speaker 2: $ 100, 000? That's the reason I was signing. Because to a
person like me, $ 100, 000. Sure. Wow. A person like us, $ 100, 000.
Speaker 12: When were you supposed to get.
Speaker 2: $ 100, 000? Whenever.
Speaker 11: I mean, she offered me $ 100, 000 to be quiet.
Speaker 12: I'm from the hood. I've been in and out of
foster care. $ 100, 000 to me just to be quiet.
Speaker 2: Hey, why not try?
Speaker 12: But I knew it wasn't going to get nowhere because
it was Lane County. And boy, I was trying to
talk them out of it so bad.
Speaker 2: But I got a question.
Speaker 12: I looked up an accessory to murder is 14 years.
Speaker 2: Okay. Max.
Speaker 3: Okay.
Speaker 2: So I'm getting, I'm probably getting a license. Do you think?
Speaker 4: I have no idea.
Speaker 3: That is way down the road.
Speaker 2: Way down the road. I'm not trying to eat blood.
Speaker 11: If I'm getting a sentence, I'm.
Speaker 12: Going to start with my life sentence. I'm not depressed.
I can adapt to a prison life, but I'm too
little to be in prison.
Speaker 2: I'm going to start eating. Can I get an eventual dose?
How do you plead insanity? You really did not just
ask me that. I have a medical history. No. You're
doing good at manning up for it. Stay on that path.
If I leave town, how would that look? Like, if
I leave the country? Uh, bad. Who? Jasmine? Jasmine?
Speaker 3: We still have Jasmine.
Speaker 2: Oh, that bitch in the hole herself.
Speaker 5: Boy, what?
Speaker 2: Oh. Like, where do I arrange? Like, am I an
accomplice or an accessory? A smear to the... They are?
Speaker 5: Tell me what the difference is between them.
Speaker 2: The accomplice is the one I actually partook in the killing.
Speaker 5: Okay.
Speaker 11: An accessory of somebody.
Speaker 2: They either got bribed or somebody.
Speaker 5: So what do you think you lie in this?
Speaker 2: To be honest?
Speaker 4: Yes, honest.
Speaker 5: Because you keep saying, to be honest.
Speaker 3: I want you to be honest.
Speaker 5: You're as good as the person who did it.
Speaker 2: Are you serious?
Speaker 5: Did you set this up with these people?
Speaker 2: Who?
Speaker 5: These two people you told me about.
Speaker 3: Wait, them two?
Speaker 2: Yeah. See what I'm saying? Oh, my God. I'm about
to get a life sentence.
Speaker 5: Okay, you need to just relax, okay? We're not even
close to being there yet, okay?
Speaker 2: Well, I'm not even talking no more. There is no
reason to even come back in here.
Speaker 12: I'm already getting a life sentence.
Speaker 2: I have no more to say.
Speaker 11: You just said I'm as guilty as the nigga who
did it.
Speaker 2: Oh, my. Got him. Oh, my God. I'm about to
get lightened.
Speaker 5: Yo, what happened?
Speaker 4: That bitch about to get my sign.
Speaker 2: Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Oh,
my God. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Oh, my God.
Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
Speaker 2: I'm as guilty as the same.
Speaker 4: What happened?
Speaker 2: What game is she trying to play now? What the
hell is going on? Because she started messing up my office.
How am I messing up your office? She said that
I'll make it the same time as she did it. Uh-huh.
Speaker 12: But she ain't say shit about what Jasmine's going to get.
And Jasmine is part white, which means she gets a
white privilege.
Speaker 2: Sit down. I can't sit down. I have ADHD. I'm
telling you, sit down. I have ADHD.
Speaker 6: And I'm telling you, I'm not talking to you.
Speaker 2: Walk around. Sit down. I have ADHD. Okay. I will
be walking back and forth.
Speaker 4: Hook him up.
Speaker 2: All right. You're under arrest.
Speaker 5: How many times have you and Knowledge talked about the
insurance money?
Speaker 8: I mean, I've talked about it, but I brought it
up once, and then he brings it up.
Speaker 2: Okay.
Speaker 3: Like, he'll continue to bring it up.
Speaker 2: Before anything happened.
Speaker 3: Before anything happened, and I kind of shot it down.
Speaker 2: Okay. All the time.
Speaker 3: I usually just.
Speaker 2: Shot it down.
Speaker 5: Right.
Speaker 3: Not that I made the agreement with them.
Speaker 2: Okay.
Speaker 3: I said okay.
Speaker 2: All right.
Speaker 3: And what was that agreement?
Speaker 4: $ 15, 000.
Speaker 2: $ 1, 000? Yes. A piece? Yes. What was the agreed upon method?
The strangling.
Speaker 3: But I didn't think it was going to go through.
Speaker 11: At some point you did.
Speaker 2: You paid two guys to do it.
Speaker 4: No, I didn't pay them.
Speaker 2: Okay, what night?
Speaker 4: They don't have anything. Nobody has nothing. Because me personally, when.
Speaker 2: Wait a minute. Didn't you give them a couple hundred
bucks that night?
Speaker 3: $ 200.
Speaker 4: Okay.
Speaker 2: $ 200. Were you ever intending to pay them?
Speaker 6: No. Really?
Speaker 2: You're going to keep the money for yourself? Oh, I
wasn't going to keep the money for you. I was
going to give it away. I didn't want it.
Speaker 4: I felt guilty as it is.
Speaker 3: I don't want it.
Speaker 2: All right, we're going to cuff you up, and we're
going to go see the judge now.
Speaker 1: Jasmine Harley, Knowledge Couser, Devont Devine, and Malquin Drayton were
convicted of murder. Each was sentenced to life in prison
with the possibility of parole after 25 years. You've been
listening to True Crime from Podcast Studios. Thanks for being here,
and we'll see you in the next one.
