The Story You Tell Yourself Can Change Your Life
October is here, and this month we’re talking about stories. The stories we tell ourselves. The stories we write. The stories we decide are finally ready to be shared.
There’s something I’ve noticed in talking with all of the authors coming to the podcast this month. So many of them had a moment that changed everything. Something happened that made them realize they had a story that needed to get out into the world.
And sometimes the story that feels the hardest to tell is the one someone else needs to hear.
In this minisode, I share a little about what’s coming this month and the connection between our stories, our health, and the way we see ourselves. We’ll be talking about depression, success, healing, publishing, finding your voice, and the stories we create about what we can and can’t do.
I also talk about something I’ve learned from horses and animals: sometimes being present enough to listen can help us hear what we already know.
In this episode:
- The stories we tell ourselves about who we are and what we’re capable of
- Why difficult experiences can become stories worth sharing
- How your story might become medicine for someone else
- What books can teach us about seeing another way
- What horses and animals can teach us about presence and truth
- Why you can change direction when the path you’re on no longer feels right
A reflection to take with you:
What story are you telling yourself right now?
And is it still true?
Maybe it’s time to turn the page.
Adventure on.

1 SPEAKER_00: Okay, it's good to be back with you for a mini sode
of the Adventure Paradox podcast.
October.
Oh my gosh, October is here.
It's the month where the veil between the living and the dead
is thinnest, my spiritual friends tell me.
It's also maybe a focus on health, turning inward again.
Last month on the podcast, we talked about organizing,
organizing our outer world to organize our inner world.
And we had an amazing finale with the beautiful Mo Lang.
How do we organize our animals or our beloveds when we are away
from them?
This month on the podcast, October, we are focusing on
stories, the stories we tell ourselves in our heads, and most
specifically interviewing authors.
And what are the stories that they tell?
True and fiction.
Because sometimes truth is stranger than fiction, but
sometimes it's through fiction that we find our real truth.
A theme I've found with all of these authors that you're going
to hear this month is that often there's some plane crashing
moment that activated their voice, their need to get their
story in print, publish it, and share it with the world to help
someone else.
There's something really special and profound that happens when
we release a story or an idea or a podcast from being something
in our heads to something that's out there in the world that we
can share with others.
Just today, a friend reached out to me who was on my show back in
February, and she said, Hey, I'm getting a lot of speaking gigs
and I want to be able to share that podcast.
This podcast lasts forever.
When a podcast is done right, it is out there for eternity, odd
infinitum.
There are lots of ways to get your voice out.
You can do it in the written word, you can do it in the
spoken word.
There are so many beautiful ways to convey your message.
So my focus this month is on health, just so you know.
And we're going to connect these two things: health, all of these
authors, all of their books, all of their stories, to figure out
what is the story you're telling yourself.
And is that story true?
I actually made a workout for you listeners.
If you want that workout and you're watching this on Facebook
Live, send me a DM.
And if you are listening to this somewhere else, you could email
my team, theadventureparadox at gmail.com, to get my workout.
Because this workout is about changing your story to change
your life, changing your story about what you can or can't do
in your body, what you can or can't do when it comes to
publishing a book.
Maybe it's a memoir, maybe it's not.
One of my favorite authors is on the podcast at the end of the
month.
I am going to save her for you, although you can check her out
in my lives.
She's the one who coined the term Hamber Chilada.
Made up word.
Her genre completely made up.
It's like nothing I have ever seen or read before.
If you're looking for a really fun read, you are going to want
to stay tuned on the Adventure Paradox podcast through the end
of the month because we have a really, really cool guest.
Some of the other guests we have go a little deeper and darker.
October can be a deep, dark month where we're maybe trying
on different costumes, themes.
Maybe it's the day of the dead situation.
Maybe you're losing someone.
Someone's crossing over.
A lot of stories around battling depression.
Depression is not for wimps, is one of the books by an author
who's also a doctor.
He was a military guy, wrestling.
He's phenomenal.
You're going to want to check him out.
Some of the others, when success is not enough, right?
When it seems like you have everything.
But it wasn't enough.
And how he went through the work to then help other people
because he had a psychic change through a therapy session,
right?
You can't make these stories up.
If you have stories in your life that you feel like you can't
make them up, there might be someone else who needs to hear
that story because they have the same medicine in them.
They just can't see it until they hear it in you.
And then they're able to go and pass it on to somebody else.
I had someone show up at my house late last night, literally
delivering me some medicine.
And she wanted to know more about podcasting and opening up
her voice.
And I was able to share all of these incredible experiences
I've been given, helping others open up their voices, connecting
especially through the spirit of being in real presence with
animals, especially horses.
And how that can awaken your ultimate truth, your ultimate
health, your ultimate experience in not only serving others, but
serving yourself, because we are always our first patient.
We are always our first voice that we must hear.
And sometimes we have to turn the dial, hear a different
channel, a different frequency about who we are and why we're
here and where we're going.
You can change the dream at any time.
You can change the channel.
If you're on a trajectory that you thought was going this way,
but that's just not feeling right anymore.
You can always change.
You can get off the horse and get on a different horse.
There is always another day.
And there's always another attitude.
Maybe it's an attitude shift.
Books help me do that, they help me see another way.
I'm actually reading the coolest book right now.
It is so fun.
And I will tell you guys more about it.
It's given from the perspective of a horse.
It's a true story, what was really happening with him.
And then the author, his owner.
So one chapter by him, one chapter by her, and how they're
seeing each other and the experience of working together.
It is profound.
And the work we're doing with certifying horse adventure
coaches right now is so fun.
If you haven't joined the party, if this is something that sounds
kind of interesting and exciting to you, you are going to want to
reach out to my team, the adventureparadox at gmail.com.
We are only taking on a few more coaches this fall.
So you will definitely want to reach out before we go into
hibernation until spring.
All right, my friends, that is all I have for you.
My computer just said I'm at low battery, and this could stop at
any moment.
At any moment, my battery could die.
Sometimes it's not a full-length episode.
You can give yourself a mini sode to reshift, read a book,
read a page, pull a spirit card, and check out our spirit cards,
which are coming soon.
Horses for the family, just in time for the holidays.
Again, if you can't wait and need to know now or want to get
me on your podcast to interview me about this, the
adventureparadox at gmail.com is where you want to go.
I love you guys.
Until next time, adventure on.
