I'm a mother of two children that at the time
of this story, I was raising alone. My husband is
in the army and during this time was on a
six-month tour. And that is basically an estimate and we
could only hope that we came home when he was told. Anyway,
I knew this going into my marriage and starting a
family that this was something possible. I have a son
and a daughter. My son is four years old and
my daughter is two years old. As you can imagine,
my life is pretty hectic, but my schedule needs to
be set for some kind of functionality. That is dropping
my kids off at daycare slash pre-K, going to work,
picking them up, coming back home, etc. And that's basically
what we do with the rest of the time being
spent at home. Now, I live on a dead end
street about three houses down from where the actual end is.
I also know that people seem to be really bad
at turning themselves around, so I avoid parking in the
street and almost exclusively use my garage. This makes my
house a prime target for a good place to turn around,
and I honestly don't mind that. Now, what I do
mind are the people that live next door to me,
one house closer to the dead end. That family is
made up of three characters who are important to my story.
An entitled mother, EM, father, EF, and an entitled daughter, ED.
These people only moved in about six months ago, but
already had made a bad impression on all of us
around them. Still, I grew up in the South with
a steady diet of good manners. When they moved in,
I introduced myself and told them that if they ever
needed anything to just come knock on my door. I
was having a pretty stressful day because my four-year-old had
been sent home from school sick. He said that his
tummy hurt and I took him right to his pediatrician.
They did testing and said that he seemed fine despite
a slight fever. At that point, he didn't seem to
even be in pain or discomfort anymore. The doctor concluded
that it was probably a small stomach virus and to
just take him home to rest. I'm not one of
those moms that goes crazy and freaks myself out when
my kid is sick. I was just gonna give him
light things to eat and have him rest a bunch.
And also hope that his sister didn't get whatever virus
he had. About an hour after I got home, there
was a knock on my door, and I opened it
to find EM standing there. Me, oh hello! EM, yeah, hi. So,
I don't know if you noticed, but my daughter just
got a new car to celebrate getting her license. I
did notice that they had gotten a new car, a
big SUV that she had clearly not yet mastered parking yet.
As I would see it, a little too far off
the curb. Not so much that it was a big deal, though.
Her driveway was already filled with two cars, which is
why she was parking in front of the house. Me. Yeah,
I did see that. Congratulations to her. EM. A little late,
but thanks. Now, I wanted to come over and ask
if she could park her car a little further up.
In front of your driveway, so that she doesn't need
to worry about hitting the curb. Me. I don't think
that would work. She cannot block a driveway. EM. Well,
it wouldn't be all the time. Just so many people
turning around and the car could get damaged. Me, I'm sorry,
but she cannot block my driveway. I need to be
able to get in and out of it. EM, wow,
so much for being a decent neighbor. Whatever happened to
knock on my door if you need anything? And with this,
my son, who I had just gotten to fall asleep,
woke up and was now yelling from the other room. Me,
I don't have time to discuss this right now, but
you cannot let her block my driveway. I'm sure the
car will be fine in the street and if you're worried,
then you can switch it with yours and let her
park in the driveway. I closed my door on her
and went to tend to the much more important matter,
which was my kid. He was crying and was feeling
warm again. He also was holding a hand to his stomach,
which made me think that he was starting to feel
pain again. So I gave him some medicine and stayed
up with him as I watched him more. Something was
just not feeling right in the pit of my stomach
and when I took his temperature it had gone up again.
Something was really wrong in the way that only a
mother can feel and I cannot really explain. It was
9pm and I wasn't going to be able to get
in contact with his doctor. So then I called 911
to get an ambulance to take him to the hospital.
And since I know people will ask why I did
that instead of driving and talking about the huge cost
of an ambulance ride in America, well, I had two reasons.
Number one, I didn't feel comfortable strapping my kid who
seemed to be in pain in a car seat and
I was worried it might actually cause more damage or
pain to him. Number two, I don't have great night
vision driving to begin with, let alone panicking with a
four-year-old crying and a two-year-old that doesn't know what's going
on who would start screaming as well. About ten minutes later,
sirens and lights were flashing outside and I was opening
my door and leading the EMTs to my son who
was lying in his bed. They checked him over and
while they couldn't give an actual diagnosis, they told me
his symptoms seemed consistent with appendicitis. The fever, nausea and
where the pain was in his stomach. All my ability
to be calm and cool was out the window as
my son was screaming in pain. He needed to get
to the hospital now and I was gonna follow behind
with the car since we couldn't all be in the ambulance.
Bad night vision be damned at that point. So then
they bundled him up and tried to carry him without
causing more pain as I was trying not to cry
and comfort him. While getting his sister up and carrying
her to the car and when we got outside I
was able to see more of the setup of the ambulance.
It was in my empty driveway which made sense because
the street is narrow and a dead end and they
would need to turn around and my driveway was perfect
for that. Only there was something there that must not
have been when they arrived about 15 minutes before we
all got outside. Two cars were now blocking my driveway
and I knew exactly who they belonged to. One was
EF's car and the other was ED's brand new SUV.
Parking in the exact spot I told them they couldn't,
not only that but knowingly blocking the ambulance into my
driveway with no way to get out. Nobody was in
the car so I ran to their door and started
banging on it like crazy with them not answering. There
was only one solution, since it was an emergency, and
let me tell you, it was not pretty. Now, while
both were blocking it, only one needed to be moved
technically to give the ambulance enough space to maneuver. And
the log dictates that what the ambulance driver did was
totally legal, because here you cannot block emergency vehicles from
doing their job. So they backed out of the driveway
anyway and just pushed ED's new car out of their way.
giving it a sizable dent in the process. Also, an
important thing that might not happen everywhere, is when you
call for an ambulance, you also get police here. I'm
not sure why exactly, but in this case, it was
extremely useful. I was able to tell an officer that
I knew who the cars belonged to, and even before
the ambulance backed out, they also tried to knock and
ring the bell to get somebody out to move these cars. Also,
the other way, blocking my driveway as well, I was
able to legally get both of the cars towed. One
for blocking me in and the other for now just
being in the middle of the street. I didn't care
about my dumb neighbors and just wanted to follow them
to the hospital and figure out what was going on
with my kid. It turned out that he did have
appendicitis and it went from minor to serious very quickly.
It actually had burst which was why he got really
bad and I was instantly glad I called 911. They
rushed him into surgery and I could only sit and
wait for any news. Now during the wait I was
getting text messages and while it was not a safe
number I knew exactly who it was from. Either EM
or EF because they were angry texting about the cars
being towed and one of them being destroyed. Threatening to
sue me and make sure that my car was gonna
end up in just as bad a condition. I ignored
them as the messages just kept coming in because I
was overwhelmed with doctors and police officers. Because of what
happened at the scene, they needed a statement from me
and the situation, the fact that I knew who the
cast belonged to, etc. I also decided to share with
them the colorful text messages I was getting, and they
seemed disgusted by them. I'd been crying on and off
the whole time, and this just sent another wave of
it through my body. The officer said, Ma'am, I promise
that they're gonna be taken care of. They knowingly blocked
the ambulance and refused to respond to commands to move
the car. Whoever in that house is found responsible is
gonna face criminal charges. All you need to do is
take care of your family and yourself. If you get
any more threats or if they do anything... Call the
number on this card, give them your name and the
number that is on your copy of the report. About
an hour later, the doctors came out and finally told
me that he was out of surgery and things went fine.
Any longer of a delay and things could have been worse,
I cannot believe that my neighbors were such a-holes that
they were willing to be spiteful to the point of
my kid almost dying. The doctor told me that kids
tend to bounce back fast and I really didn't believe
him at first, but by the next morning, he seemed
like his old self again. A little more tired and
weak but my little boy was now okay, he was
even asking about when he could go home and if
we could go to McDonalds. I did tell him that
for being brave he could have anything he wanted when
he was out of the hospital so of course as
soon as the doctor said he could eat anything we
would go. Luckily my mom was able to drive down
and take my daughter so I could just stay with
and focus on my son. Once I knew he was
fine it really started to sink in how horrible the
people were for what they did. I was told not
to respond to that text so instead I was just
saving them to see if they would threaten me again.
They didn't but still made nasty comments about the car
being ruined and me being the worst neighbor ever supposedly.
They did say that they would sue me but I
didn't care because I literally had police as my witness
to the events. I was not scared of them at
all and just wanted my life to get back to
something normal again. even if normal for me is chaotic.
We got home from the hospital and picking up my
daughter a few hours ago and my driveway was now
free and no sign of my neighbors in sight. Both
kids are currently down for a nap so I figured
it was a good time to sit down and tell
this story because I may or may not have been
reading about bad neighbors on here while my son was
sleeping and I had nothing else to do. I'm sure
that this will not be the end of everything but
for now it's all I have. I'm just glad that
my son is doing okay honestly and blasting my neighbors
on here is actually a little therapeutic. Update to the story,
wow I didn't expect this to get as many likes
and comments as it did I do have some more
news on what's going on, as well as I'm happy
to answer a few questions that people had for me
in the comments. The big one being that I was
able to find out more about the case using the
resources some of you sent me in the comments. It
turns out that they are pressing charges against EF for
obstructing an emergency vehicle. Also for making the threats via
text to me. That court date and everything is still
TBD so hopefully when I get more info on that
I can let you know. I've seen my neighbours in
the meantime and it's just a silent battle of looks. Well,
them giving me sneers and dirty looks with me not
really doing anything back takes too much energy on my
part and I need it all for my kids. Speaking
of my son, he is doing great and back to pre-k.
He had no complications with the surgery and since it
was an organ that doesn't do anything, he should be
fine in the future without any problems. Some of you
asked me about my husband and wanting to know his
reaction to me telling him. Well, I wish I could
say it was more exciting, but he just said that
they were jerks and was happy that his son was okay.
I'm sure if he sees them after coming home, he'll
be giving them dirty looks back. He might be in
the army, but he is a sweet and gentle soul. Finally,
for this update... I want to thank the numerous people
that answered my questions about the police. They come as
well as an ambulance because they can get there first
and help with first aid training. Also in case the
injury is due to a criminal activity and they need
to be there for that. It's always nice to learn
something new and I can carry that with me. And thankfully,
there's another update to the story and it reads like this.
Sorry for the long hiatus and people begging me for
an update. I just didn't have much time to give
until now because the court finally made a ruling on
the neighbor. He pled guilty to avoid a trial and
is being sent to prison. I can only imagine what
would have happened if my son had been seriously impacted
by the delay to the hospital because of him. Also
people wanted to know about their cars and I guess
they paid to get them back because they do have
them again and their SUV is fully repaired. None of
them have ever been parked in front of my driveway
again so I guess they got told to park illegally
or they were just gonna end up getting towed again.
The other update I have is in response to people
telling me to get some cameras for the property in
case something happens again. I did not have any before
and realized that if it wasn't for the police having
body cams, EF could have possibly gotten away with it
and not went to prison. I did not want to
go crazy so I got just one camera that is
above my garage door and one that is a doorbell camera.
So far I haven't had to use either one of
them seriously but they are really cool things. At least
now I can tell when my door rings that it's
a takeout I ordered and not somebody that wants to
break into my house. Finally it's maybe worth noting that
my husband is finally back home and we got a
very interesting look from the EM on that one. I
think they assumed that I was just a single mother
and now they realize that I'm married to somebody in
the services. I think that's the nail in the coffin
that nobody from that house is going to try and retaliate.
I don't think I'm going to need to update again,
so I want to just thank everybody who enjoyed reading
and commenting on this one. It was my first and
hopefully last post I will need to make here. And
the next one is an M.I.D.A. whole story. My fiance
and I live together near the ocean with many tourist attractions.
My family from all over the world regularly visit and
stay with us. In return, we stay with them when
we visit their cities for various reasons, for example, work, vacation, etc.
Last year, I had to travel to the city where
her brother lives, and she decided to come visit him
and his family. She asked if we could stay with
them and he declined because he is still protective of
his family due to the world events. I understood at
first and we stayed at a hotel but later got
annoyed because they had no problem going to dinner and
out with us in public. And by the way ripe
stars I suppose this story happened during the pandemic. Anyway
earlier this year I had to go back to his
city and again she came along to visit them. He
again declined her request to stay at their house. So
we stayed at a hotel. I understand some people just
don't like to have overnight guests. Anyway, the visit went
smoothly and everyone had a good time. Last week he
called to ask if he and his family could stay
at our place when they come here in a couple
of weeks for their vacation. I got really annoyed at
this because he didn't let us stay at his house
but wants to stay at ours. I told my fiance
that they can stay at a hotel but she argued
that they would need three rooms for seven days due
to their family size. She then pointed out that we
always let my family stay with us at which point
I countered that it is because we are always invited
to stay with my family whenever we visit their cities.
She argued family do things for each other without expecting
anything in return. We went back and forth until bed
last night. I'm sitting here having coffee while she is
sleeping and I am unsure if I'm wrong. On one hand,
I know I can be stubborn and petty. On the
other hand, he doesn't invite us to stay with him
while expecting us to house him and his family. What
do you think? Update to answer some questions. So we
got a four-bedroom house along with many air mattresses. Once
we hosted 10 of her college friends when they had
a get-together, people slept in the living room and dining room.
They also have a four-bedroom house and we would have
been happy to sleep in the living room. We have
slept on an air mattress many times at my family homes.
All of his kids are over 10 and his wife
is bringing her sister along and she needs a bedroom
of her own. No one in his family have any
disability or condition. Our house is near many of the
attractions they want to go to. Due to the popularity
of the attractions they want to go to, hotels and
house rentals close to those attractions are more expensive than normal. Also,
our house is close to shopping and restaurants. My fiancée
just told me whether they stay with us or not,
she is letting her brother borrow her car for the
week so that they will only have to rent one car.
That means for us that we'll have to carpool that week.
This is even more annoying as that would add about
an hour to my daily commute. My fiancée is a
better person than I am. I can be very petty
when I'm annoyed, which is why I usually take cues
from her and go with her decisions in certain situations.
In this case, though, I'm very annoyed, which is why
we are in an argument. When it was just me
traveling to her brother's city, my company was paying for
a hotel room. When my fiancé decided to tag along
to visit her brother, she asked him to stay so
she could spend more time with her nieces and nephews.
And yeah, ripe stars, let me know in the comments
what you think about this story. Is OP the a-hole
here or not? A comment on Reddit said, Not the a-hole.
I would die on this hill simply because I don't
want that many people in my home for a week.
And your brother-in-law should not have planned a vacation if
he cannot afford a hotel. Comment number two, not the a-hole.
She argued family do things for each other without expecting
anything in return. Then why didn't they do something for
you when you needed a place to sleep? Comment number three,
not the a-hole, my wife is like this too, always
goes on about why do you help your family and
not mine? It helps that my family helps each other
while her family only takes. And yeah, ripe stars, honestly,
I hate it when people always take from you but
never give something in return. That is one of the
things I really despise. And the next Reddit story starts
like this. It's probably the best to start this off
with some context. My son was born with a fractured spine,
which never healed properly. This means he cannot walk. Well, barely.
He can do a few steps. So he has had
to use a wheelchair since day one and will most
likely always have to. He is 11 now and gets
around fine. He's so used to it that it doesn't
really cause him any limitations. Me, my wife and son
moved a house a couple of months ago into a
new neighborhood. The area is nice, a certain improvement from
where we lived before, or so we thought. On our
first day, our neighbor came over and said... Hey, I'm Karen,
your next-door neighbor, she said with a smile as we
were hauling boxes into the house. Oh, hello, nice to
meet you, my wife replied, chuffed to be getting to
know people so quickly. It's a lovely neighborhood, as I'm
sure you can see. Karen continued making light conversations. Oh,
I know, right? It's just lovely. Don't worry, we'll keep
your lawn nice and tidy. Oh, excellent. We've had some
issues in the past with that. People trying to change
their path, etc. Karen rolled her eyes at the idea. Oh, well,
we'll be changing our path, my wife replied awkwardly. Excuse me? Why?
Karen's face had changed to one of anger. Well, it's
not wide enough for our son's wheelchair. Your son's what? Wheelchair? Yes,
I heard you. But why do you think this is
the place for such a person? Sorry? At this point,
I had walked over, hearing the strange nature of the conversation.
And who might you be? Karen asked, hands on hips. Um,
her husband. Now what's the issue with the path being changed?
It will look out of place. But more to the point,
your son will. Excuse me, what? What are you trying
to say here? This is not the area for someone
like your son. You would have realized that if you
had any brain. Look around. Nothing is accessible. Your house
has steps to the entrance and a small path, as
it should be. Yeah, exactly. No, we will just be
changing things as we are entitled to do it. You know,
because it's our house. Me and my wife shared a
look as we watched the cocks turn in Karen's mind.
She said nothing for a couple minutes before storming off
to her house and slamming the door. I did not
have a very good feeling about her, and I was right.
The next few weeks were awful. She kept coming out
and trying to disrupt the work we were having done
to the house to make it accessible for our son.
who was staying with my parents until the work was finished,
by the way. By the end of it, we just
ignored her, telling her to go away, and never worked
and arguing with her was draining. Once everything was finished,
we went and picked up my son. Karen must have
seen us getting the wheelchair out of the car to
bring over to where my son was set, as the
next thing we knew she was charging out of her house, saying, Ah,
so where's the charming boy? she asked. He'll be getting
out in a minute, I said, a little worried for
what fiasco she might be planning. Please don't let me
stop you. I walked around to his side of the
car and helped him out. My wife also got out
and shared a worried look with me. Hello there, I'm
your new neighbor. Karen exasperated, holding out her hand. Hi,
I'm Sam, my son replied, reaching out his hand. But
just as he was about to shake hers, she pulled
her hand away. Oh, sorry, force of habit. I don't
want to catch anything. What? I asked. You know, I
don't want to catch whatever your son has. You cannot
catch his inability to walk. What a disrespectful comment. Well,
I don't want to take my chances. What are you
still doing here? My wife asked. Well, I think you
guys should move, she said with a straight face. What?
We are not going to move, I replied with a laugh.
I think you will find you will. People like your
son cannot be in this neighborhood. I will fine you
if you don't. What on earth are you on about?
You cannot just demand stuff like this. You know very well.
Move out now. I will ensure the next owners revert
the disgusting changes you have made to your home. We
are not moving and please stop shouting like that in
front of my child and stop acting so discriminatory towards him.
I'm not discriminating. If anything, you are discriminating against me.
I laughed at this and said, there's no way you
could possibly think that. Move out now. Or tell your
stupid kid to not use that ugly thing. He needs it.
What is so hard to understand about this? What's your
problem with it? Like it's not obvious. It obscures the
neighborhood and devalues our property values. What? That's absurd. I've
never heard something so ridiculous in my life. Dad, what's
going on? My son asked with a shaky voice. Nothing, son.
Don't worry. Your stupid wheelchair is causing issues. That's what's
going on. You and your family need to leave from here.
Karen screamed at my son, bending down and getting way
too close. Back away from my son now. I demanded
putting my hand on her shoulder and shoving her away. Assault!
Oh shut up, stop discriminating against my son, leave me
and my family alone or we will go to the police.
Are you threatening me? She asked and I didn't like
the look that crossed over her eyes. In the next
few seconds Karen reached into her pocket and pulled out
a can of pepper spray. I thought she was going
to aim it at myself, but before I could stop her,
she had sprayed it all over my son. It got
into his eyes and mouth, and understandably, he began crying
in agony. There, it's what you deserve. Remember that feeling.
Karen stormed off with a smirk. Me and my wife
immediately began consoling my son, and another neighbor ran out
with milk and began pouring it over his eyes, which
seemed to help. She also said she would rung the police,
and they were on their way. We had never met
this woman before. but she seemed to know a lot
about Karen. The police arrived and a paramedic began helping
my son. The police took statements from us and a
little while later from my son too. This other neighbor
also gave a statement and better yet had footage from
her security cameras that showed everything that happened as we
happened to just be in the frame. There was sound too,
so all of Karen's discriminatory remarks were heard as well.
Most importantly, there was footage of her spraying pepper in
my son's eyes, Karen came running out. What's going on here?
Oh my god, is he okay? She had a fake
look of sympathy and shock in her eyes. I was
not proud of what happened next though. When she came
close enough I swung my fist and knocked her out cold.
I of course then got a scolding from the police
but given the circumstances that was all I got in punishment.
They hauled Karen into their car as she began regaining conscience.
My son was feeling better but understandably was distressed so
we all headed inside and waited for the cops to
come back. We had told them that we wanted to
press charges. The court date rolled around and the case
was almost comical. My son actually wanted to be there,
said it felt exciting and would be a good story
for school. Anyway, Karen made a few more outrageous comments
which did not help her case. It was also revealed
that there have been numerous complaints filed by ex-neighbors for
other discriminatory acts against their own disabilities, so she was
clearly a repeat offender of this type of thing. None
of these other complaints went as far as there was
little proof, but with the footage our neighbor provided of
the attack, our case was an easy win. Because of
the clearly premeditated nature of Karen's crime and the fact
that she was a repeat offender of discriminatory acts, she
was sentenced to five years in prison without the chance
of parole. They practically had to drag her out kicking
and screaming, and according to her, she was doing a
justice to the neighborhood. Speaking of the neighborhood, she had
also been banned by the council from living there anymore.
We have new neighbors now, a lovely family that are
becoming good friends of ours. And the next one is
titled Quitting a Job in Style. I was working a
second job at our local small grocery store and butcher
shop few nights a week to pay for my kids' activities.
I was hired as a cashier, the person that did
the end of day butcher shop clean up and sanitizing quit.
So instead of hiring someone for clean up, the owners
decided that the cashiers could just do it between customers.
The owners sat at their office watching TV and effing
around and when a customer came in, doorbell would ring,
they would bust the phone in the butcher area for
the cashier, to come check them out. When I came
in for my shift at 6pm and was told about
the new setup, I told them no. I was not
hired to clean up the butcher area. I was hired
to run the register and stock shelves. The owner then
said that I would clean the butcher shop or I
could consider myself fired and they walked away. I said fine,
I grabbed my things and left and apparently the owner
thought I had given in and was doing the cleaning.
So they buzzed the butcher area when customers came in
for about two hours before someone told them no one
was coming to check them out. The store's liquor area,
cigarettes and scratchers got emptied out. It was 7.30 and
I got a screaming phone call from the owner about
how he was calling the police and I was gonna
get arrested. Yeah, right. The owner did call the police
and the owner stated he wanted me arrested as an
accomplice to the thefts because I had left. The cops
asked me to come to the store, which I did,
and I explained that the owner had fired me, so
I went home and the CCTV would prove that fact.
The tape was reviewed and plain as day, The owner
said I was fired. I estimate they lost about $ 30, 000.
And the next one is another malicious compliance story. So
there was the perfect example of malicious compliance one evening
at the bus depot my brother and I used to
work at quite a long time ago. Some backstory, my
brother started out as a general laborer, cleaning the buses,
moving them to correct locations, don't need CDLs in shop
and other miscellaneous tasks throughout the night. The supervisor was
a stubborn jackass, always knows best. The supervisor was telling
my brother to perform a task that was a little risky.
Everyone in the area could hear the conversation pretty well
because we worked close together. One night, the supervisor said
to move a certain bus in between two other buses
that were parked a little too close together, the length
of the conversation went sort of like this. I'm sure
you can see where the malicious compliance is about to
come into play. The supervisor told him to stop making
excuses for not wanting to work. He assumed all the
workers were lazy because it's union. brother okay will do
boss as he backed in everyone in the shop started
staring because they knew it would be bad the whole
shop was taken over by the loud scraping noises the
sub ran over yelling what the hell are you doing
brother making it fit by this time the supervisor was
pissed and said now you have to write an accident
report well my brother was compliment on the end as
well As he wrote the accident report, he reads it
out loud. Supervisor told me to park a bus in
Lot C. I explained I didn't feel comfortable and it
wouldn't fit. And well, he told me to make it fit.
Before he could finish, the supervisor cut him off and said,
What are you doing? Brother, writing the incident report. Okay, okay,
don't worry about it. I'll take care of this. Brother, okay,
that's fine. Everyone watched as this happened and it was
to talk around the shop for quite a long time.
Management never brought this incident back up and the supervisor
must have brushed this under the rug as to not
get himself in trouble. About a year after that, my
brother was actually promoted to supervisor and then eventually to
the manager of the shop. And the next Reddit story
starts like this. So I consider stability to be very
important to raising children. In that way, I'm aware of
how fortunate I was to have my farmhouse growing up.
Family was always accessible and I learned so many skills,
one of the most important of which is the satisfaction
and pride that comes from putting everything into a day's work.
As I was coming up, the world was starting to change.
It was crucial to father that school be my priority.
The changes in the world showed with me and my
siblings and my cousins growing up. I was the only
member of my generation of the family that stayed and
devoted my adult life to the farm. Don't get me wrong,
I don't claim to be the only thing keeping this
farm running. My beautiful wife is skilled enough with finances
to have built a successful career working online while keeping
the farm successful as well. In any time when our
financial stability was threatened, my younger sister and one of
my cousins have always been willing to dip into the
savings and investments they built up through their own hard
work to keep us afloat. And that is not even
counting all the workers and contractors that keep the farm
running throughout the year when one pair of hands is
not enough. This farm is fundamental to my life and
I have raised my own children to learn to value
the farm and the lessons this land can teach while
also making sure they learn from school how to succeed
in the world beyond as well. At one time my
family knew many more of the details of the founding
of the farmland and how it fell to our family's hands.
We are still able to track the family back at
least 125 years and find its destiny tied to the farmland.
A large part of what makes the stability of this
farm so important to me is just how visible the
constant change is in the rest of the world. Year
after year the city creeps closer to me and developments
rise out of the ground like weeds. Now the encroachment
is visible at the edge of my property I've watched
a nearby housing development rise out of the ground in
an impossibly short amount of time. Then again, if each
house looks the same, then it must be pretty easy
to pump them out by the end of the process.
This was one of those developments that a few investors
had plans for from the very beginning. The investors who
bought the land organized an HOA for the development before
there were homes to own. They approached me often during
the construction and made some offers for my land. When
it was obvious that sale would happen, they offered to
allow me and my farmland into their HOA contract. I
politely turned them down no matter how rudely persistent they stayed.
Of course, a man who owns a farm and shows
a polite nature is generally considered to be a simpleton.
At least in their mind. I've learned that there's plenty
to be gained from being underestimated by people, though. My
wife was furious at some of the haughty interactions she
witnessed the HOA leaders have with me, but I just
kept my guard up and let them pump their houses
out of the cookie cutters and into the metaphorical oven.
When the development was complete, homeowners came flooding in. These
homes were brilliantly located at good prices and there was
even an HOA to keep all the facilities in the
housing development in tip-top shape. So all the working class
homeowners could forget about any of those concerns. Being their
simple redneck neighbor, I heard the grumbling start when a
new president to the HOA came pretty much out of nowhere.
They had worked with the investors that built this development
to begin with, but they had none of the same
priorities and mentality. Their focus in the past had been
business investment and the beginning and end of their concerns
were the returns they could get on their investments. At
this same time, I started to be bugged again. The
new HOA president had obviously been briefed on me because
he came to visit with a casserole to gift me,
absolutely horrific, thanks for asking, and a tone of voice
that made it clear he thought I would be shocked
that negative numbers were even a thing. He was obviously
bugged when me and my wife kindly turned down joining
the HOA and then firmly rebuffed letting him have a
stake in our land. I recognized the concealed pout from
when we didn't let my daughter go over to her
friend's house over the weekend because her schoolwork wasn't done.
A few months go by and I am shocked that
the HOA president let things sit where they had been left.
That is until I get the first letter from this HOA. Obviously,
the HOA president thought it would be too obvious for
someone simple-minded like me to figure out if he claimed
that I had only missed the last six months of
HOA dues while he was the president. So he decided
to claim that I had not only been a member
of the HOA for the last two years, but I
had yet to pay my dues a single time. The
first letter even kindly offered to let me off the
hook for late fees. How kind of him. Of course,
I tossed the letter to the site and went about
my life. However, the letters kept streaming in, all past
the first claim I had ignored their warnings and as
a result would have to pay hefty late fees to
make the total of what I owed them $ 15, 000. I
saw all the rest of the letters through a red
haze of anger. $ 15, 000 could completely ruin my ability to
keep the farm running on its own income. I'd already
tapped into my family's pockets at times, but never something
like this. Even thinking that they would never be able
to make me pay, I could not help but panic
at the thought of if this could force me to
give up my home or something. My wife advised me
not to act, but had some work to do in
the city and unfortunately couldn't stop me. I stormed over
to the HOA development after this letter claiming that I
owed them $ 15, 000 and went straight to the HOA president's
horribly unhumble abode. I did not stop to listen to
the secretary and so I walked in on an important
meeting that consisted of him sharing coffee with another man
who looked convinced that his crap did not stink. I
demanded to know the meaning of the letter. The HOA
president waved off the secretary from where she followed me
into the room, looking shocked. He told his friends with
the cotton candy farts to stay and that I would
not be there long. Then he stood up and got
up close to my face. He said, that OP is
a consequence. Those come when you refuse to honor agreements
and legal contracts. This one is large because you had
plenty of time to honor your agreements. I replied, agreements
I made before you even came to beg me to
join your HOA, and let you start whittling away at
my family's land. He said, That's a hefty accusation, my friend.
I would prefer if we don't get emotional about this.
You should understand that you may live on land that
has been around for a long time, but that doesn't
mean that you can follow rules that they followed back
in the day that an individual farmer was actually relevant.
Attacking me is not enough. Of course he belittles the
entire community of farmers that keep the nation's agriculture from
being monopolized by corporations. I said, I'm not paying anything.
I kept the letter in my hand. though I did
crumple it in my fist and stormed out of the room.
The letters then started to get more hotly worded and
a few threatened the safety of my livelihood and my family.
I started to get worried and considered sending my wife
and daughters away to live with my sister in the
city or something. My wonderful wife made it clear that
they would never dream of making me stand up for
my home alone and they could all take precautions to
keep everyone safe. I did not have to worry about
them sending Wild West bounty hunters to my home yet.
I certainly had plenty of lawyers who would have made
perfect scarecrows if they didn't already have massive sticks up
their butts. They tramped through my crops and even let
my animals out of their fences. I had an old
sheepdog that died during this period. And to this day,
I don't have proof, but I'm certain that they must
have poisoned him or something. One of these lawyers found
me working in the field one day, and I at
least enjoyed the look of disgust on his face when
his nice dress shoes got muddy. He came out to
me looking like he was wading through poop instead of mud,
and then he tossed out a few words that took
any sort of self-satisfied grin from my face. He offered
to explain any of the legal terms and any of
the words over two syllables since they all thought I
didn't make it past second grade, but the moment I
heard lean, I went running for my wife. We were
finally in agreement that this was escalating to a point
where we couldn't ignore them, so we hired a lawyer.
The lawyer heard us out and since he actually had
ears and half a brain, he was able to tell
that me and my wife actually knew a thing or two.
We were well aware of how much of the events
that had gone on and of the sketchy legal positioning
it all fit within. He asked if we had ever
received a contract and we said we hadn't. He told
us to get one from the HOA president under the
pretense of trying to understand the fines and to give
it to him along with every piece of correspondence they
had sent our way that we still had. We got
him these items and then he asked us if we
knew anything about dissatisfaction within the housing development with the HOA.
We mentioned some of the grumblings that we had been
hearing since the new HOA president came in, but they
had ultimately seemed to go nowhere, so we didn't think
they would be important. Our lawyer did some extra research
through his paralegals, and when he came to us and
told us we could bring them to court, his grin
convinced us that we could win. It was child's play
to prove that we were not part of the HOA.
If the longevity of our property was not enough, then
the proof that our home was still registered as farmland
in the state and the HOA's contract was specific about
overseeing residential land certainly was. The lawyer had found proof
that the HOA president had even filed for permits to
develop my farmland without yet having even ownership over it.
He had obviously been trying to force me and my
family out through his intimidation and fines. Fraud charges combined
with our fines and the potential lien being dissolved. But
our lawyer made it clear that to end it, it
would be unethical. The lawyer presented the letters and the
aggressive wording that came in, as well as mine, and
my wife's testimony of the unceasing disrespect at the hands
of the HOA president as signs of harassment and assault.
Then he presented testimonies from homeowners within the HOA development
that spoke of their dissatisfaction as many of the neighborhood's
amenities were falling into disrepair and their HOA dues were
not going down at times they even went up. This
and bank statements of the HOA that the judge requested
be presented before the court showed that the money from
people's dues were not going towards the projects that the
HOA president claimed. A large chunk of the funds seemed
to go towards personal accounts and separate investment projects the
HOA president was involved in. The judge ruled that the
HOA president was guilty of fraud, harassment and embezzlement. He
requested reparations for me and my wife, as well as
all those who had paid dues to the HOA during
the period of time when embezzlement had been happening. Due
to the thorough corruption of the HOA at the hands
of the president, the judge also ruled for it to
be disbanded and for the members to be released from
their contracts for free. Oh, and by the way, the
pretentious jerk had jail time on top of fines that
made my 15 grand look like monopoly money. My sister
paid for the legal fees during the case, but I've
met my lawyer and bought him a drink every week since.
He also gets some free products from my various farmer's
market stalls when he doesn't insist on paying and threatens
to make a scene if we don't let him. And here,
ripe stars, I'm glad that in the end everything turned
out well for OP. I hope in the future these
HOAs really stop messing with farmers. The next one is
titled My wife, female 32, recently had wine spilled on
her by my best friend, female 31, during our wedding.
Now she is demanding that I, male 33, cut ties.
So me and Ailey met through a mutual friend in
2012 during a pub quiz at university. I was quite
attracted to her and actually told her so at the
end of the evening, but she told me she had
a boyfriend even though she was flattered all the same.
Fast forward three years later, I met Eliza at the
Edinburgh Fringe, and we just clicked immediately. Politics, music, cinema,
whatever the subject approached, there was a spark that I'd
never felt with anyone else. Like, she just made sense
with me. Her personality was just vivid. It's hard to describe,
but I'll try. On first impression... She was so knowledgeable
and enthusiastic, I was taken aback by her intensity. From
that point onwards, we were inseparable, and I was dead
certain of our future together long before we got engaged.
Enter Ailey again. I started a new job at an
advertising firm with a position in web design, and she
was one of the only people I knew. At first,
it was a little awkward given our history, especially considering
that she was now married to the boyfriend she was
dating back then. But there was no one else I
knew at the firm and we both had partners at
this point, so it couldn't hurt to be friends, right?
And to be honest, I'm glad because I feel like
our chemistry as friends superseded any potential we might have
had as a couple. She is clever and has a
bit of a cheeky personality. I'm quite dry and sarcastic myself,
so I reckon we have a pretty fun dynamic. Eliza
does not seem to feel that way though, sometimes when
it's been the three of us she has expressed a
feeling of being left out or that Ailey has been
making fun of her. I don't see it, it's just
our dynamic but there have been a couple of nights
where Eliza has been in tears because of something that
Ailey has said. One time Eliza got out of her
seat and Ailey sat down where she was sitting to
show me a video on YouTube. When Eliza came back in,
she saw Ailey leaning next to me and was upset
for the rest of the night. Sometimes there have been
times when Ailey has said something that Eliza has read
as a come on. Like when I said I missed
swimming because I felt out of shape, Ailey said, the
two of us should go together with a playful punch.
Eliza didn't say anything at the time, but her discomfort
was visible. Things really came to a head though on
our wedding and I think the stress of it really
got to Eliza. During the reception, Ailey bumped into her
and red wine spilled all over her dress. She was
bawling the entire evening. We are now on our honeymoon
and Eliza has said she hopes for a fresh start,
but she feels like Ailey might have spilled her wine
on purpose. She is suggesting that I cut ties with
her and if I'm honest, I'm not sure I want to.
Where do I go from here? Comment number one, the
number of times I've bumped into someone and spilled my
drink on them is exactly once in my entire life
and I was a crap-faced teenager. You are either astoundingly
naive or Ailey is somehow the unluckiest woman in the
world to accidentally spill her red wine on the bride
on her wedding day. I think you know which one
is more likely. Your wife won't be staying your wife
for much longer unless you start actually listening to her.
and stop dismissing all of her fears as baseless insecurities.
Comment number two, I'll just say it to you straight,
take a step back and look at your post and
comments objectively. See a pattern? You are constantly defending Ailey
in regards to your wife. Why is that? Your wife
is upset because of the jokes Ailey makes. Why haven't
you asked Ailey to tone it down? To not make
them to Eliza? You seem to be under the impression
that Eliza should suck it up or not be so sensitive.
Just because you are not bothered by those jokes doesn't
mean that Eliza is not. Has Ailey apologized for spilling
the wine? If it came down to it and you
had to choose, who would you pick? This issue is
because of your lack of attention towards the whole thing.
You have known that your wife has had problems for
years now with Ailey and you have seriously done nothing.
I'm sorry, but do you even want to be married
to your wife? From your posts and your comments, it
sounds like you and Ailey are in denial. Your wife
is saying something to you and are you not listening
because you don't believe her or is it because you
don't want to lose Ailey? And now we got an
update to the story and it reads like this. You know,
I posted here recently looking for guidance on how to
deal with my wife's anxiety and hurt revolving around my
friend and it seems like I got read the riot act,
probably rightly so. So I've been completely inconsiderate of Eliza's
feelings and how she feels about these roastings and you
alerted me to the possibility that Ailey is doing this
just to be a little crap. I sat down with
Eliza and we had an in-depth conversation about the wedding incident.
I got her to describe the event step by step
in her own words. I was leaving the lobby into
the dining venue and Ailey was a little tipsy at
this point and already stumbling from the bar. She was
initially walking slower but seemed to speed up when she
saw me. We collided into each other and she pulled
an ashamed face and made a joke about me looking
like Rosamund Pike in Gone Girl before scurrying away. She
seemed embarrassed in the moment, but she didn't apologize to me.
I heard from other people that she was appalled about
what happened, but I never heard anything from her directly.
It just paints a picture of habitual microaggressions from her
that have festered into this ugly anxiety whenever she's around.
I pretty much predict whenever I'm in her vicinity, there
will be weird behavior or uncomfortable comments and I don't
want to continue being in a situation where my husband
brings someone into my home who resents me simply for existing.
That was a real gut punch to me. For me,
I always felt like it was just insecurity about me
fancying Ailey for 10 minutes years ago, but Eliza is
really torn up about this. She has said that the
honeymoon has been miserable because the memory has been swirling
around in her mind and she feels like I'm gonna
downplay or dismiss it. No one should feel like they
cannot just be themselves, especially not at home. I did
not realize what a craphead I'd been, and I apologized
profusely to Eliza and decided to phone up Ellie to
confront her about the wedding incident. So I did, and it...
it didn't go well. Basically, I told her that Eliza
was really hurt by the wedding dress incident, that she'd
been hurt by her behavior for a long time... and
that if she cannot bring herself to apologize to Eliza's
face at least, she could pay towards getting the stain removed.
And if she couldn't bring herself to even do that,
then our friendship had to stop. To say that Ailey
was taken aback would be an understatement. She was completely
blindsided asking what was wrong with their interactions that made
me want to go to such extremes. I mentioned the
leapfrog comment and she went, but even you call her that,
stating that Eliza called her Garfield because of her weight
and bright orange hair. When I mentioned that she ran
towards Eliza and didn't apologize for spilling wine on her,
she got really upset and started shouting that she was
not running at her to hurl wine at her dress.
She was running from her because she didn't want to
talk at that moment because she feels like Eliza hates
her and she doesn't know how to go about it.
She started pointing out times when Eliza had been funny
towards her and I basically said, right, but this is
not about when Eliza has hurt you. This is about
when you've hurt Eliza and it's got so bad that
it needs to be talked about. And she started laughing
and it was really uncomfortable. I know she does this
when she's anxious about something. Eliza asked me if things
were okay from the other room and Ailey demanded if
this was set up and when I tried to explain
myself she hung up. Her husband even phoned me insisting
that he would pay for the damage if it's less
stressful for me. I told Ewan, the husband, that I
appreciated that but I needed to know where Ailey stood
regarding what I just said. Ewan told me that Ailey
makes jokes whenever she's anxious or uncomfortable and that I've
wrote about it in the past but the wedding dress
incident is a major issue and that he wants to
smooth things over as much as I do. So him
and Ailey will pay towards dry cleaning, whilst the condolences
hamper is sent to Eliza. Finally, Eliza was relieved that
Iwan was so understanding, but she wasn't thrilled about Ailey's reaction.
Basically said that the Garfield comment was always about her
hair and never about her weight, and that she was
deliberately trying to make it seem like the bad behavior
went both ways. I don't think it's went both ways either,
because I've never noticed Eliza roasting Ailey in any real way.
Eliza has suggested we try marriage counselling. I was a
bit shocked at first because we've only been married a month. Anyway,
I decided maybe that's the way forward because if Eliza
reckons that we need counseling for it, then it's clearly
a problem. So yeah, me and Eliza are gonna try
marriage counseling and my future with Ailey is uncertain. And
the next Reddit story starts like this. I'm getting married
in seven days and I am beyond screwed. So I
need help because I'm pretty sure my life is falling apart.
I met Jessica around 2017. It started out as just
a mutual friendship until we grew to like each other's
company more and more. We never really expected it to
grow past this point, but maybe it's because most of
our interactions were still around other friends for most of
our early friendship. Then the pandemic struck. Of course, no
one knew what was going to come with the lockdown
in our modern era. In many ways, we are the
best suited the human race has ever been for such
a thing. In others, we certainly are not. So I
locked myself in my apartment and got lucky. that my
job was able to very quickly transition to an online environment.
It did not take me long to deeply hate this.
I was still in contact with many of my friends
and family, but I was struggling to communicate emotionally with them.
I didn't have as much to relate to with some
of them because we didn't occupy the same online space.
Many of those who were as comfortable as I am
in the online space, this is not my first time
on this site by the way, even if I don't
post often, were still thriving by the time I had
started to flounder. I kept feeling drawn to speak to
Jessica even though I was sure that she had far
worse things to be concerned about than silly old me.
And I would not be writing this post if I
hadn't reached out to her. We seem to have found
that we were exactly what the other needed. Simply put,
we bared our hearts to each other over the next
few months and she may have saved my life. It
didn't take long for us to find that the simplest
way to describe our relationship was dating. I did not
wait long to propose once we got a chance to
see each other after getting tested. She moved in with
me shortly after that and from that point on everything
seemed like it would be perfect. After a while, everything
seemed to return to normal in the world around us.
I thought I had worked a miracle and made it
out the other side of the pandemic better than I
had started it. I knew just how lucky this was
as I lost an uncle to the pandemic and one
of my lifelong friends lost his grandma, who had practically
raised him because of how irresponsible his parents were. Jessica
and I emerged from isolation all the better for the
reintroduction of our social life. We took things slow and
mostly just enjoyed staying in with groups of friends and
then we would go out with them and then we
would go out on the town together. All through it,
I made it clear that Jessica could choose the date
of the wedding since I'd sprung it on her quickly
after our relationship started. Eventually, the world finally seemed distance
enough from the depths of quarantine and Jessica decided that
she was ready for a wedding. At least that is
what I was hoping was going through her mind when
this all started. She started planning everything four and a
half months ago. She also started to act strange. I
figured it was just anxiety. We both trusted each other
with everything through much of our dual quarantine. And it
didn't seem like she was exactly hiding things, but she
started to get upset if I was somewhere behind her
while she was on her phone. She would really get
flustered if I ever entered a room without her realizing
at first. None of this seemed to line up even
with the Jessica I knew from before the pandemic, but
a blissful part of me was somehow willing and able
to imagine that it was just isolation changing her as
it had changed all of us. I've never been one
to invade my partner's privacy, by the way. If I've
built enough trust that we are living together and have
our possessions lying around everywhere, then I accept that as
a statement of integrity. After all, I don't have to
dig through my partner's messages if it's sitting on a
coffee table available for me to do it, or at
least that's how I view it. When I ended up
waiting for Jessica to finish her shower and her phone
started getting text notifications, I'll admit that the strange behavior
came to mind. I wasn't gonna dig any deeper, but
I'd see who she was receiving texts from. It turned
out I did not need to dig too deep. She
was receiving texts from a guy named Thomas. The text
seemed routine and tied to work until I scrolled a
little further up and saw the end of their last conversation.
They had established some sort of minor code to start
and end conversations, so if I just opened up their conversation,
it would look normal, but the real meat was in between. Sexting,
planning meetings, complaints about me, and how unfulfilling I am sexually.
It was making me legitimately sick to my stomach to
read these messages, but I had to know one other thing.
I scrolled to the top of the conversation and saw
that it had started about three months ago. Three months!
I hope none of you know just how much finding
something like this out can make you question everything good
you have in your life. My fiancé got out of
the shower and I gave her her phone. I felt
like an idiot when I said, someone named Thomas messaged you.
It looked like it was about work. I felt even
worse when she snatched a phone from me and was
instantly defensive about the fact that I opened up her phone.
She asked if I was snooping and I just raised
my hands in surrender and said no and apologized about
the invasion of privacy and all that jazz. It's been
a day or two now and I don't know what
to do. I have a feeling that I know what
90% of the comments are gonna read but maybe that's
what I need to make a tough decision. Thank you
all for reading this. I guess I needed to vent
as much as I needed help. Update to the story. Alright,
you guys have been blowing up the comments on here
and I finally feel like I can come in here
and update you guys. So I've been wanting to thank
you for nearly the whole week but at first things
were really tough and I didn't think I had it
in me to share this. So by the time things
were going to get better I decided that I wanted
to wait until I could tell the whole story. Now
that time has come. Also I want to clarify that
I did propose so early because my family has been
notably horrible to family members that have moved in with
partners before at least engagement. I made this clear to
Jessica when I proposed so she wouldn't feel pressured that
it meant we had to get married right away. Back
to the story though. I was pretty sure I knew
what I needed to do right away, but I needed
encouragement and I really found that here. So I knew
I had to confront her. Our days were really busy
with all the events that come with planning a wedding,
but I managed to find time where I could be
alone with her the day after my initial post. I
was brutally honest with her at just what I had
found and how emotionally destroyed I was. I told her
that we should at least delay the wedding and maybe
we would find that we needed to cancel it, but
I wanted to wait on that decision. until I was
less emotionally involved. She waited through everything I said, though
she did start crying and emotionally reacting in ways that
she claimed to be uncontrollable in the moment. According to her,
she had noticed that I hardly ate anything that day
and spent most of the day trying to find my
way out of any plans. She was not sure what
was wrong with her, but guilt had been building up
in her all day. When I brought her the phone
and she immediately felt fearful and defensive, she said that
guilt was building up in her and she realized what
a horrible mistake she was making. She wanted to break
it off with Thomas, but first she was concerned that
this exact confrontation would be coming. She blabbered and begged
that we don't cancel the wedding. She claimed that our
relationship was all that helped her to make it through
the quarantine and that I saved her and she didn't
want us to end like this. In the moment, I
was incredibly conflicted because the hurt was still deep down
inside of me, But the part of me that desperately
wanted to be wrong about everything jumped on the chance
and forgave her, as long as I could see definite
proof that she not only broke up with Thomas, but
did everything in her power to never be around him again. Apparently,
he did not work with her, which should have brought
up new questions, so this was not too difficult for her.
I still felt physically sick and I didn't tell my
best friends because I knew that they would not be
willing to forgive her and stand by me in the
ceremony if they didn't fully trust her. They had already
shown doubts early on when we got so close so quick.
I had to do something though or I was pretty
sure I wouldn't make it through the ceremony so I
got a prenup written up. I decided that it could
be proof of her honestly regretting her affair. It's not
like I have tons of money, but I am fortunate
with the career I am in, so this is by
no means unfounded even if I wasn't planning it before.
I brought it into her office to get her signature
away from where family and friends would see. Only, she
was working from home today. Sure as hell she wasn't
considering that I had dropped by the house before going
to her office. All the better for me, though, because
I went straight home and logged into her computer. She
had told me the password once a while back, and
I never really referenced it, so I was pretty confident
she wouldn't have changed it even after me catching her
with the texts. I scrolled through and this time I
dispensed with any semblance of courtesy. I went through all
her different social media DMs and even her texts because
she has Apple devices and the sync is oh so convenient.
I wasn't finding anything but I kept overlooking one conversation
for the same reason that I didn't dig through her
texts with her parents or siblings. I just figured that
I was well aware of her relationship with those people,
my mind was changed the moment I started scrolling through
some of her saved photos that she had hidden in
different folders. Not password protected or anything, just defended by
my own trust in her apparently. Don't I feel great
for that now? Nudes, pictures of dates, a couple of
amateur attempts at adult videos. One folder was all Thomas
and the other one sent me straight to her text
conversations with our wedding planner. So I mentioned we were
planning the wedding for four and a half months and
I won't make you all actually wait, but I want
you all to pause here and guess how long they
have been screwing each other. It was several months. That
was before she told me she wanted to finish the
wedding and before she suggested him as the wedding planner.
I guess that's one way to ensure that you will
have weddings to plan. Find fiancées that are feeling promiscuous
and cut the line of candidates for planning their wedding.
This was when I finally told my best friends and
when I finally felt good enough that I actually wanted
to update you guys. But it was also when the
ball started rolling and I wanted you guys to hear
about the final piece of art. Let's go back a bit.
It turns out Jessica really didn't like to delete anything.
All her pictures and messages with both Thomas and the
WP were recorded incredibly accurately, I sent it all to
my buddies and let them know what I was planning.
I did not even want the slightest chance of her
finding any of the files on my phone or computer,
so I had my buddies do a lot of the
actual planning. I did have to do one thing though,
me and Jessica met with the wedding planner and I
had one thing that I wanted to add to the ceremony.
I wanted there to be a slideshow of important moments
in our relationship during the vows. I figured we could
both contribute and they would play over our heads. Jessica
took this to mean that I had truly forgiven her
and WP assumed he was in the clear, I guess.
They jumped on the idea and he set everything up.
The day of the ceremony finally comes and my blood
is up. I was worried I would have to hide
my visual excitement, but then I remembered it was my
wedding day. I didn't want to blindside some of my
closest family and friends, so I told them, but not
a single person on her side of the aisle had
a clue. The procession is beautiful, the music is divine,
live piano, each bridesmaid is walked down the aisle by
a groomsman with a devilish grin. I gloat. My mother
cried and said that she couldn't wait for the day
that I looked that happy for the woman walking down
the aisle. I cannot help but agree, but for now,
I'm taking a break from serious dating. Anyway, the officiator
was a poor old man, and my one regret standing
there was that he wouldn't know what was coming. Jessica
had vows that she had apparently written with her mother
on her deathbed way back, Or at least that's what
she told me to make me convinced that she cared.
She started reciting them and the first few images of
the correct slideshow played. Then there was a selfie of
her and WP kissing. That started some whispers and some
shock through the crowd. It was a growing realization as
the next slide showed conversations with the names labeled clearly
on the text planning dates in between cake tastings and
dress fittings. I think most guys don't take their eyes
off their bride during the ceremony and that was one
thing I shared with a normal wedding. I watched as
she got enjoyment out of the reactions from the crowd.
When the first nude of WP came up, the gasps
were followed by her father bellowing, Stop this nonsense! That
finally got her to look up. Her brows were furrowed
as she looked out on the crowd. Her whole side
of the aisle with hands over their agape mouth. A
lot of them were starting to cry around her father
who was standing and bellowing nonsense. Meanwhile, my side of
the aisle was quiet. My mother was holding a program
up so she wouldn't have to see the explicit imagery,
but would still be able to watch the ruins of
the ceremony. She looked up and I swear, I've never
seen blood drain out of her face so fast. A
five-star hotel has sheets darker than her face at that moment.
Then the slide transitioned and we all got the full
glory of her moans as WP aka the wedding planner
drilled her for our viewing pleasure. Jessica's family demanded an
end to it shortly after that. Her bridesmaids dragged her
to a private room, WP was dragged back to me
like a puppy carried by the scruff of his neck.
I had a few cousins keep an eye on him
when the slideshow started so he couldn't run. I ended
up getting a full refund for his services. I accepted
the loss of paying for the venue and the catering
that I couldn't cancel in time. It was entirely worth
it to watch Jessica experience just a fraction of the
betrayal she handed my way on what most women hope
is the best day of their lives. The next one
is an M.I.D.A. whole story. I, 24 male, have been
in a relationship with my 24 male boyfriend Jay, for
two years now, and we are planning on moving into
my house next month, but things don't look that way anymore.
So I am an orphan, I lost my parents three
years ago, and me and my brother, Sam, 20 male,
inherited our parents' house and quite a lot of money.
I wouldn't call us rich, but we are definitely comfortable.
My parents were hit by a drunk driver and it
took me over a year in therapy to get over it.
My brother is still going and things have been getting better,
but he still grieves a lot. We both got the house,
but he wanted nothing to do with the house and
asked me to buy him out of it and I agreed.
The house is now in my name and we got
him an apartment 20 minutes from me, so we are
still close to each other. When I met my boyfriend,
I opened myself up again and fell in love, and
we have a wonderful relationship, but the only problem is
his cousin, Mike, 21 male, he hates me like a lot,
and I honestly have no clue why. He hated me
before I even met him. Jay defends him, but tries
to at least make him act nice in front of me.
Three days ago, I hosted a party at my house.
In my house, I have a lot of pics of
my parents, me, my brother and all of us together.
It makes me feel as though they are still with
us and we are still a happy family. At my party,
my friend Sam, Jay and his family were invited and
me and my boyfriend were planning to tell everyone that
we are planning on moving in together. I was so
excited and Sam seemed to be enjoying himself for the
first time in a long time, so I was pretty
damn happy. Before we got to tell everyone, Mike looks
at my brother and points to a picture of my
parents and says, Well, I told Jay to either remove
Mike from my home or I would. Jay got defensive
and said they were messing around and that my brother
needs to be able to joke about stuff like this.
I said, you have three minutes to throw him out
or I will. I set my timer and waited it out.
My boyfriend did not seem to think that I was
serious and when time was up I told everyone that
Mike is no longer welcome in my house and if
he didn't leave now, I would call the cops. His
family said if he goes, then they go. Here is
why I think I might be an a-hole, but still
think my actions were justified. I told them, I don't
give a damn about you all, when you cannot even
teach that guy manners, so get the f out. They
then left, and my friends helped me calm down. They
said they get that I was mad, but I was
out of line. Jay is threatening to break up with me,
and my brother just said to forgive them, but I cannot. So, Reddit,
am I the a-hole? for kicking my boyfriend's family out?
Edit just wanted to say that his family backed Mike
as well, and that's why I said what I said.
And yeah, ripe stars, let me know in the comments
what you think about this story. Is OP the a-hole
or not? I would say OP is certainly not the a-hole.
That is certainly a family of douchebags. Anyway, comment number one,
not the a-hole, break up with Jay and change the
locks on your house if he has a key. He
clearly doesn't respect you. Let his family insult you and
your dead parents in your home after you graciously hosted them.
You deserve better. I'm so sorry for the loss of
your parents. Comment number two, not the a-hole. That was
the most insensitive, rude, a-holish thing I've ever heard. Who
says stuff like that to someone who lost their parents?
Your phrasing may have been over the top, but I
don't feel like you overreacted at all. As a matter
of fact, I think Jay and his family underreacted. How
could they excuse a statement like that is beyond me.
Good for you, standing up for your brother and yourself
like that. Comment number three, not the a-hole. If they
cannot respect you, your family or your deceased parents in
your home, they know where the door is. Update to
the story. I had a long talk with my brother.
He says that if I want to forgive Jay, that
I should do that and that he will be in
my sight no matter what. but he won't ever be
in the same room as Mike again, and if I
ever host a party or anything like that and Mike
is there, he won't go. Jay and I had a
talk today at lunchtime, I took a sick day and
just wanted this to be over so I could go
on with my life. And then Jay came to my
house and the first thing he said was ready to
apologize to Mike, and I told him, that if he
didn't change his tone and cut the crap, that I
would throw the door in his face. He looked shocked
at my response and came in and sat down so
we could talk. I told him that what Mike said
is just evil and that I won't have him disrespect
my late parents and my brother. I told him that
I won't ever be in the same room as him again.
Jay stayed quiet, took his phone out, sent a text
and then he started to talk. He basically said that
it was meant as a joke and that me and
Sam took it way too personal which made me yell
at him. We argued about 10 minutes more and then
Mike showed up. I looked at Jay and he told
me to just hear him out being the idiot I
apparently am. I did. He said and I quote, I'm
sorry you and your brother cannot take a joke but
can we get past this now? I said to Mike,
get out, and he left. Jay started to yell, but
I just said, we are over, and told him to
get out. He started crying and told me he was sorry.
I just took my keys back and threw him out.
I'm not even sad, I'm just hurt and angry, but
thank you to all of you. Your comments helped, and
I'm grateful. This whole thing will probably sink in later
today or tomorrow, so once again, thanks to all of you.
By the way, I haven't blocked him yet, as I
still need to get some of the things I left
at his place, but after that, I will block him
and his family. And yeah guys, props to OP for
turning the situation around and I hope that OP will
find someone better in the very near future. And the
next Reddit story starts like this. My family for generations
has lived in Bulgaria and I was the first generation
to immigrate away. The thing is that the family farm
has been in my name and sat unused for a
good amount of time. I didn't want to run it
or move back to Bulgaria, so I've just been kind
of letting it sit while I figure out what the
heck I want to do with it. When I had
a break from work, I decided to travel back there
to at least see the land and try and make
some sort of plan for it. What I didn't expect
was to see the land that had been built over
and there was now a water park sitting on it.
The other farms in the area were long gone and
replaced with a small town. A town that was now
having the benefit of the water park being on my land.
The owner of the park was a guy named Ivan
who owned the piece of land next to mine. Now,
I had never given Ivan permission to use the land,
so I was rightfully angry that he turned my family
land into his amusement center. I found it extremely disrespectful
and when I found him, I was already angry. There
was no chance for me to get into this conversation,
not going extremely volatile. Me, what did you do to
my land? You ruined it. Ivan, whoa, whoa, I created
something wonderful for the town. And to probably fill his pockets,
I added in my mind. Me, I really don't care
about why you build it. All I know is that
it's on my property and I want it shut down now. Ivan,
actually you haven't been here, so the land is mine
through adverse possessions. For those that don't speak legal terms,
that means he was saying he was squatting on the
land and was allowed to take it because I had
left it. A law that I learned exists overseas, but
under this situation in Bulgaria didn't actually exist. He was
just throwing words around to try and scare me. He
was not gonna shut it down, so I decided that
I was just gonna have to make him. I filed
a complaint against Ivan with the local police about him
constructing the park illegally and that it shouldn't be in operation.
They said they would send inspectors to the park to
see what was going on. What they ended up finding
was several health and safety violations and issues notices for
Ivan to shut down the park. Warnings that Ivan flat
out ignored and instead continued to operate it and refused
to admit that I owned the land. Which for that
complaint would take forever to get settled unless I pursued
legal action more severe than a simple complaint. I not
only made sure that the government was charging him criminally
with stealing my land and illegal construction and refusal to
shut down the illegal park but also a civil case.
I wanted him evicted off of my land and to
gain the money that he profited for using it. It
gets a little complicated when a criminal and civil case
are kind of for the same thing so I will
try and break it down in a way That makes
the most sense. For the eviction, Ivan was given several
notices to leave the property and shut down his park.
When he kept ignoring and refusing these orders, the government
had to step in to shut the park down since
it was dangerous for people. He did not even bother
having insurance in the case of somebody getting hurt, it
was an accident waiting to happen. But Ivan just didn't
seem to care, until he was forced out of the
property and it was locked so he couldn't get himself
back in. He was also told that removal of the
park he built would be done and he would be
the one paying for it and all profits gained from
the park would be transferred to me. Luckily, he kept
actual books on the place, and they seemed legit, so
the money was easily trackable. It wasn't a ton of money,
but it was a nice amount that I didn't have before. Now, criminally,
he was being charged with illegal construction, illegal possession of land, trespassing,
and some other building thing that I forgot the name for.
basically building a knowingly unsafe structure with disregard for the
safety and well-being of others. Ivan was not just going
to go down without trying to weasel his way out
of this. First, he was arguing that he did own
the land, so he shouldn't have to pay me anything
or get in trouble. I had court documents and others
showing that I owned the land and was the legal
owner on file. Even if he did make a verbal
agreement with the previously deceased owner, my great uncle, it
wouldn't be valid. Plus we all know that it never
actually happened. He decided to try and maintain that the
entire thing was just one giant misunderstanding. Somehow still coming
off as arrogant instead of apologetic. Ivan, I had no
idea there was anybody left in the family to own
this property. He wasn't there and I assumed he knew
about my past agreement. This entire thing is being blown
out of proportion. I know that I did wrong and
want to give him the land back, even though I
technically did acquire it correctly using adverse possession. Which the
court is refusing to even acknowledge. Yeah, insult the court,
that's a smart idea. The judge then said, we are
well past it. You made zero attempts to gain a
deed for the land. You cannot acquire property under adverse
possession in this country. The thing you will and are
getting tried for is the theft of land. Plus I
have here your past criminal history. Just because you came
over the border doesn't mean that your past records just disappeared.
It turns out that he had a previous criminal history
in Romania and that he didn't think would follow him
down here. The history sounded very familiar, with acts of
swindling and lying to people in order to gain land.
Not a soul in that room was gonna believe his
story of it being an accident when he had a
clear history of doing that. this. He was found guilty
on all charges and being sent to prison for the
maximum of five years. The only reason for the maximum
sentence was because he had a previous history of the
behavior and also because he put lives in danger by
not having the park be safe. This was a perfect
example of a guy that just didn't care about the
law and did whatever he wanted. Thinking that nothing was
going to happen to him and when it did, he
would just move to a nearby country and start the
entire thing again. I guess back in the day, it
was harder for records to follow you and worked. Now,
in the modern day, it was not happening and Ivan
was getting what he had coming for probably years. I
got my land back without any issues and as the
court demanded, he paid for the park's destruction and I
got a nice sum of money. What I also got
was an idea about what I could do with the land.
I didn't want to open a park or anything because
I didn't want to move back to Bulgaria. I wanted
to do something where I could go back home and
stay there without worrying. I donated the land to the
government to be used as a park, not a water
park but just a normal park, green grass, a place
for kids to run and play, etc. Something the small
town could enjoy for free, while also ensuring that the
land didn't get stolen again. I didn't care about the
money being lost or anything. I just wanted the land
to be used for something good, and I think my
ancestors would agree I made the right choice. And the
next one is a pro-revenge story, and it is an
absolute XXL one, so please listen until the very end.
I have worked quite a few part-time jobs over the
years to help with the budget. Some in bigger cities,
some in smaller ones, but this story takes place in
a large city where each neighborhood is actually a small town.
The city is really a bunch of small towns that
grew until they touched. This job was almost 20 years ago,
so the dialogue is from memory. One part-time job was
evenings and weekends at a liquor store with a drive-thru beer,
soda and wine lane. We could only sell beer and
wine at the drive-thru. If a customer wanted liquor or
more than a set amount of wine, he had to
park and come inside. We could not carry liquor to
the car for you either. The state had a lot
of nitpicky rules like that and I had just completed
the mandatory training needed to sell alcohol, so the rules
were fresh in my mind. The store had been in
business for decades and the manager was the owner's slacker
of a son. He was happy to bend or flat
out break the laws regulating alcohol sales if it meant
money for him. He didn't care if the consequences would
be the problem of the person who rang them up.
That did not impact him directly, so it did not matter.
Manager had all sorts of special customers that were supposed
to be treated a certain way that broke the regulations.
I think the fine for selling liquor out of the
drive-thru was more than the store earned in a year.
I was a stickler for the rules, so if the
manager wanted to break or bend the rules, he could
do it. It wasn't like we got any reward for
breaking the rules for managers' special customers. They had a
hard time finding employees because the manager had a reputation
in the area and few people wanted to work for him. So,
refusing to bend over backwards for manager's special customers was
not gonna get me fired. No one told me that
we had an unusual customer several afternoons during the week
and twice on the weekends. This customer was abominable, rude, stinky,
very prejudiced and sexist. He told the crudest jokes to
the female employees and kept trying to insist that we
go find a park with him, like we were ladies
of the night or something. He was not just any cop,
but the chief of police in a nearby section of
the city. Most of the small cities within the larger
city had their own police, fire, etc. And the first
night I saw him, CC, the co-worker and manager's niece,
great person by the way, told me to just watch
and stay quiet. She sold him two cases of beer
and he went away. I noticed that his backseat area
was filled to the point where you had no place
to put your feet. She said to never say anything
negative to him and to sell him whatever he wanted,
no matter if he walked inside or not. She never
gave me a clue as to why. A few weeks later,
I was working alone on a Sunday at about noon.
Business was always slow at this time. The chief pulls
into the drive-thru. Me. Hi. How are you today? What
can I get for you? Chief. I'm fine. And so
are you. I need a bunch of stuff and it
needs to go into the trunk. Me. Let me grab
a pencil and pad so you don't need to repeat it.
Just a second. I grab them. What all do you need?
The chief lists various types of beer, wine, liquor, mixers
and some candy. Me, is that all? Am I allowed
to sell this to you through the drive-thru or do
you have to come in for the harder stuff? The
chief got out of his car while it was sitting
in the drive-thru lane. He walked up so close he
loomed over me. Me, is that all? Am I allowed
to sell this to you through the drive-thru or do
you have to come in for the harder stuff? Chief,
do you think I would break the law? That I
would never embarrass myself, my city or the Marines this way?
What the Marines had to do with anything, I still
have no idea. Me, of course, I don't think that.
I'm just asking because the state training was unclear about this.
I guess it must be fine. After all, you're an
officer of the law. Just promise me that if I
make a mistake, it will stay between you and me.
The training was not unclear, but I felt unsafe around
him and didn't want to argue with him or make
him even angrier. The chief said, it better be fine.
Stop backing up. He was walking forward towards me and
he was very tall and imposing, not in a good way.
I need to see if you're recording anything. Put your
arms out from your body, level with your shoulders. Well,
I see you're not wearing a wire or a bra.
Maybe I should open your shirt a little and have
some fun, huh? I ought to take you back into
that storeroom to have my fun with you. No one
would ever know. Me, I'm so sorry. I don't think
my father would approve. I'm only here on Sundays at
this time because I can go to mass earlier. If
I was single, I would be happy about it, but
it would mean breaking one of the Ten Commandments. The
chief had a rosary hanging from his rearview mirror and
Catholic decals on his official vehicle. By the way, RipeStars,
that dude does not sound very Catholic to me. Anyway,
it was a mostly Catholic area of the city and
this was not unusual. I was scared of him and
just saying anything to try to keep him away from me.
I cannot tell you how imposing and awful this man was.
I really thought he was going to take me back
to the storeroom and assault me. The chief said, well,
it might be worth it. Be quick about getting my
order and I will leave you alone this time. You
should wear a bra that pushes you up when you
know I'm coming by. I nodded at him and rushed
to get what he wanted and to ring him up.
I just wanted him gone at that point. I felt
very scared but knew that we needed the income. I
had to figure out a way not to be near
the guy again and still keep my job. Cece came
in to take over about two hours later. She could
see that I was a mess and she wanted to
know what happened. We had no customers so I told her.
The chief came in and wanted a ton of stuff.
Cases of beer, lots of wine and hard liquor, mixers,
all of it. He insisted on getting it through the drive-thru.
I asked if that was okay because the training wasn't clear.
He got out of his car and kept coming too close. Eventually,
he told me to stop moving after he backed me
up into the wall. He said he had to pat
me down to see if I was wearing a wire.
It sure felt more like feeling me up. I was
in tears and Cece was hugging me to help me
calm down. She asked if that was all. Me, he
said he should open my shirt for fun, that he
should take me into the storeroom and no one would
ever know. Cece said, this is why we give him
what he wants and we never question him. We don't
want him to get out of the car because he
tried this with everyone. He does not know that we
have cameras everywhere now. No sound but cameras. I'm not
sure what we can do about it, but I will
think on it. I did not see CC for over
a week, just how our schedules worked. I was really
nervous when I was alone in the store. I didn't
feel unsafe in the store until my experience with the
chief of police. I started thinking about how to get
rid of a chief of police. I did some research
and found out that the cops in any other jurisdiction
could pull him over and or arrest him. Our neighborhood
was announcing the summer festival season with lots of signs
about drunk driving. Summer is when every local Catholic church
has a big festival with games and rides and things.
It's the big fundraiser for the church. Of course, the
church festival would not be the same without tons of beer,
at least not in this area. I walked over to
the police station one day. It wasn't far. I asked
an officer if they would be interested in pulling over
a police officer from another district if the officer was
clearly drinking. The officer, good cop, wanted to know more,
but would definitely be interested in the situation. Me, I
work at the drive-thru and liquor store. I have a
customer that I'm afraid of and who breaks a number
of laws. He is high-ranking in a different part of
the city, not our neighborhood. I don't have warrants or
a criminal record. I'm not accusing him to get out
of trouble. Good cop, let's go in here and get
some coffee and talk this out. Me, a couple of
nights a week at a certain time and again during
our slowest period on Saturdays and Sundays, a high-ranking cop
drives through. He insists that he can buy as much
of anything that he wants and he doesn't have to
come inside for any reason. The first time I was
alone when he came through, I asked if he needed
to come inside to get the liquor and amount of
wine that he wanted. I was not rude or mean,
I even said that maybe I didn't understand the training
and the loopholes in the laws. Good Cop said, Do
you know that just being a cop doesn't mean the
laws change for him? Me, yes, but that isn't all
he did. When I questioned him, he got out of
the car and started backing me up against a wall.
He put his hands all over me supposedly to check
for a wire, then he said he should take me
into the back room for so-called fun. Good cop. What
do you mean by that? Usually he has a beer
in his hand when we get to him. I have
seen him go through up to three beers if he
has to wait for one or two other cars before
we get to him. He never buys under a case
of beer unless he buys whiskey with it. I named
the whiskey he usually bought, but I cannot remember it now.
His backseat area is filled with empties every time we
see him. The beer he buys is usually put on
the front seat next to him. He opens a can
before he leaves, saying he wants to make sure it's good.
The only time he has us put all of the
beer in the trunk or backseat is if he orders
a Coke. Then he orders whiskey and pours some of
the Coke out to make room for the whiskey. Good
Cop says, so I need to stop before it happens.
Good cop. What are you afraid we will find if
we investigate you? What secrets are you afraid of us finding? Me?
I'm a 30-something mother of three kids. I don't have
a wild life. I've been happily married for over a decade.
I haven't ever been in legal trouble. I don't drink,
do drugs, go to orgies or do any of those
types of things. I'm not against social drinking, but I
don't drink. I have some debt, but who doesn't? There
isn't anything I can think of that you could dig up.
Do what you have to do. Good cop. How can
you prove what he does? You're not in the car
with him. How do you think we can pull him
over and arrest him? Me. He has a routine. He
pulls in, drinks whatever beer he has with him, orders
what he wants and often asks me to throw away
his recently emptied cans. One to three, depending on how
long the line is. Why he wants me to throw
those cans away, I have no idea. His backseat is
usually filled with empties. We give him whatever he orders
because we don't want him to get out of the car.
I'm not the only employee he has said awful things to.
Once he pays, he turns right out of the parking lot.
Then he turns left about a mile down. I know
because I was headed the same way a few times.
His car says he's from Summerview and that it's the
chief's car. It even has his name painted on it.
I don't know how old the empties in his car are.
I do know, though, that I can set his beer
cans aside if you need them for fingerprints or something. Anyway,
good cop said, here's the chief of Summerview. Wait here,
I need to get our chief. Don't go anywhere. I
was expecting them to have to get the top officers involved.
I didn't expect the sort of excitement. About 30 minutes later,
the chief of police of my neighborhood came in. I
know who he is because he married some cousin of mine,
but I have never had any real relationship with him.
We said hi to each other and made the usual,
how's your family stuff. For a moment or two, I
had a lot of family in this area, way too
much some days. Chief of police, I hear you have
some info about the chief. Why are you coming to
us with this? I said, he makes me feel very
unsafe each time he comes through the drive-thru. He's also
drinking every time I see him come in. and leaves
with a drink in his hand. I have kids and
family in this neighborhood. He's gonna kill someone. He has
been inappropriate with every female employee at the store. I
feel threatened that if I don't sell whatever he wants
in whatever amounts to him through the drive-thru, then he
will get out of the car and at least threaten
to assault me. I want you to do something about
his drunk driving so that he won't have a reason
to come into our drive-through several times a week. Chief
of Police, if I look into you, am I gonna
find that you have a private relationship with him or
other things that would discredit you? Me, of course not.
I wouldn't go anywhere near the guy for any reason
except that I have to be polite at work. Also,
I'm married happily. Chief of Police, from what you have said,
this looks like an easy case of drunk driving. Especially
if we can catch him with a lot of booze
and empties on him. We would need to have someone
in store for you to hand the empty cans to
if we plan to use that as evidence. How comfortable
would you be with an officer inside the store? Me,
I would be fine with it as long as the
officer was out of sight and out of uniform. If
you're looking for empties, then Wednesday would be good. If
you want to catch him in the car with a
ton of alcohol, be there on Sunday about noon or
Saturday about 2 to 3. I went through security tapes
to find out when he usually comes by, you would
probably have to talk to the manager after the fact
to get those. Or talk to C. She is the
one who really runs things here. Why are you all
so excited over this? Chief of Police, his behavior has
caught the attention of quite a few people lately. I
can't go into it, but we are very interested in him.
I also don't like him. He hit on my wife
at a function we had to attend. I left after
writing and signing a statement. I didn't hear anything for
several weeks and I was getting frustrated. The chief was
still coming in, he was still drinking while driving, and
he kept making awful comments to me. One Sunday, about
two months after I made my statement, the chief came in,
and he ordered even more than his usual Sunday amount.
Less than a minute after he left our parking lot,
I heard sirens. A lot of them. I hoped they
were arresting the chief, but I didn't know for sure.
The next morning when I took the kids to school,
all the moms were buzzing. Apparently, the chief got himself
pulled over for driving while intoxicated. They found his beer,
wine and hard liquor. They also found drugs and this
led them to search his home, where they found unregistered
guns and information about other illegal things he was involved with. Corruption,
illegal child videos, to name just a couple of things.
I spoke to the chief of police a week or
two later. I would not need to testify. They had
plenty of other people who were willing to testify instead.
The chief had become a real liability for those who
backed him in his town, Many of his close friends
ended up testifying against him to save their own behinds.
The chief went to prison. I'm not sure where or
how long. I just know that it was an ugly situation.
The chief's wife also left him. The news made a
huge deal of the whole mess, and I'm still thankful
that my name was kept out of it. And yeah,
Ripe Stars, this sounds like a really small town, and honestly,
with such corrupt police, I would be really scared to
make such a statement as OP did. However, then again,
props to OP for bringing down this awful police chief.
I hope he rots in prison for the rest of
his life. And the next Reddit story starts like this.
So my farm has been in my family for generations.
That is not unusual though for the rural area where
I live. It's full of small farms and people. who
have not left the area for hundreds of years. As
time goes on, more things happened, and before I knew it,
farms were getting sold off due to the bad economy,
and the land was getting bought up by rich developers.
I'm not turned off by the mere concept of change
and houses being built where farms used to be, however,
it made me a little sad when I saw a
subdivision and HOA being formed on the land of families
that I had known my entire life. Other farmers nearby
had a bad feeling too and I heard them talking
about how HOAs just want to push farmers out and
just wait because they would come crawling with big money
offers for the land. Instead though, I started to get
directly harassed by the HOA president herself who assumed that
I was nothing but a hick she could manipulate and abuse.
Just because an area is rural does not mean that
we are not educated people and I really think it's
that small stereotype that let Karen think they can get
away with it. She came up to my farm to
talk to me. Karen, hey there. My name is Karen
and I'm the HOA president. I just wanted to come
by and talk to you about rules and your land. Me, oh,
I wasn't interested in joining the HOA. In fact, I
think my land is actually part of a different district
than where the subdivision is. So you don't need to
waste your time or breath asking me to join. Karen,
I was not gonna ask you to join. You live
in the neighborhood and that means you need to follow
the HOA rules. I know it might be a little
confusing for you, but I can explain it really simple. Me,
because you don't think I can understand what you're talking about, right? Karen, listen,
we have plans to buy some land and open local
stores that are easy for people to access. What they
really need is a nice parking lot and your land
is perfect for that. Me, I'm not interested in selling
my land. Karen, we are not buying anything. Let me
slow it down for you. She then starts to speak
to me like I'm a child or somebody with brain
damage that cannot understand what's going on around them. Karen,
the HOA owns the land now, and we are going
to use it to make a parking lot. You need
to go somewhere else with your family to live. I
slammed the door in her face, refusing to be insulted
like that. I couldn't believe she was trying to steal
my land and thought that she could get away with
it because I was a farmer and assumed that I
was dumb. As a southern guy, I was raised with
a certain mentality of how to act around women. If
that was a man, I would have punched him in
the face, but I settled for a door in her
face instead. Now, once a year, I go with my
family to visit my wife's side of the family for
the holidays. It's about a three-hour trip each way, but
we stay a few days. The kids get to see
their cousins, and I get a well-needed break from the farm.
And yes, the farm can survive a couple of days
with just my neighbor checking in on it. That turned
out to be a huge mistake, though, because I came
back to see a disaster. I guess Karen did not
understand the words no the first time because I came
back to my farm basically being a construction site. Concrete
had already been poured over my fields. They were destroyed
and I had my wife take the kids inside so
they didn't hear the kind of language I unleashed on
Karen who was there supervising the crew. Speaking of the crew,
they were confused when I told them this was my
house and to stop with their work. Karen had somehow
convinced them that it was abandoned property the HOA had
taken over. I told them and Karen to leave while
the crew was not going to continue with me saying no,
Karen was not going to stop. Even if she walked
away now, it was too late because my field was
ruined with the concrete and that doesn't extend to just
the crops. Concrete can easily damage the deep soil, making
future crops not grow as well. I spoke to a
lawyer and told him that I wanted to sue Karen
for destroying my property. He wrote a cease and desist
to the HOA and he also needed me to file
a police report since some of her actions were actually criminal.
All I could go after her for was money I
lost for my crop yield. A warning from a lawyer
was not enough for Karen though and she said the
land was gonna be a parking lot and would not
get the concrete removed. Meanwhile she now had a criminal
trying being set as well for trespassing and destruction of
my property. The construction crew leader even testified that she
claimed the land was not owned by anyone. It did
not even matter that I was not in the HOA
district because an HOA cannot just take over somebody's private
property anyway. It got worse for her because during all
the destruction, she had a few trees torn down too.
I figured nothing major, but it turned out that one
of the big oak trees she had cut down was
considered a local landmark. Native American tribes used it as
a waypoint for meetings or something like that. This added
a charge of cultural destruction against Karen. Things for her
just kept looking worse the more court continued. Karen was
found guilty in criminal court and liable in civil court too.
Being forced to pay massive fines to the county and myself.
Plus she had to pay for the land to be
restored to its previous state on her dime. Finally it
turned out that destroying or even damaging culturally sacred sites
is a felony charge. She had single-handedly caused the migration
of people into the area as being seen as a
horrible thing. That meant people from all sides were against her.
Her own HOA hung her out to dry, claiming she
worked alone and they had no idea what she was doing.
Also the judge wanting to set a precedent in case
more HOAs formed and tried to steal farmland. She got
sent to prison for a year and she couldn't even
believe it thinking she was in the right the entire time.
Since her stunt there has been a pretty big divide
where I still live. The farmers don't want anything to
do with the people that come from the city, not
wanting to know or just trust them because Karen ruined
it for everybody. This was well over a year ago,
which means if nothing went wrong, Karen would have gotten
out by now, but I never saw her again. My
guess is she went back to the city and had
enough sense to know that nobody around here would want
to see her. The next one is a relationship story,
and it is titled My Wife Abandoned Me Two Months
Ago to Find Herself, What Can I Do? So my
wife Mary's family has a history of dementia, developing memory
issues in their mid to late 50s. Her mom's grandma
and several other relatives on her mom's side have developed
dementia as well. Her mom lived with us for four
years until earlier this year. Father is dead and our
kids are independent and out of the house. The oldest
is in her last semester of college and the younger
is enlisted. The last four years were tough on us.
Our kids' daughter moved for college but moved back for
a bit during the pandemic and our marriage. Living with
someone with dementia is brutal. We had talked a lot
the last year about taking the remaining college funds or
our regular savings, sell or rent the house. We were
ready to downsize anyway. quit our jobs and travel for
a year or until the money runs out. We just
had to wait for her mom to move into her home.
I understand her anxiety about developing dementia and I was
burned out. You live through the pandemic working remote, a
wife working remote, a college and high school student taking
remote classes and a mother-in-law with dementia and see how
you hold up. Space finally opened back up and we
were able to move her mom into a care facility.
I finally thought I had a chance to breathe. However,
when we moved Mary's mom out, Mary's mental health took
a huge downward spiral. I went from caring for her
mom to caring for her. She felt guilty about putting
her mom in a home and had lots of anxiety
about developing dementia herself. Our plan was to start our
traveling summer in 2024. Two months ago, I get home,
and she has left a note. My friends call it
Exhibit A. Basically, she was going on our trip without me.
She had quit her job, took most of the savings,
and was not sure when she would be back. Maybe
a year, maybe sooner, she knew that I would understand.
Her location is turned off and my calls go directly
to voicemail. I texted the kids a picture of the note,
we have our own checking accounts for direct deposits of
our paychecks. but we would transfer most into a joint
account to pay the household bills and savings. We both
had access to main savings account, we have joint credit
cards we used for household expenses, the two cars and
mortgage are joint too. We both also have our own
small savings accounts, our own retirement accounts, equally funded, and
our own credit cards for gifts and fun things. I
closed all joint cards and accounts, I waited a month
to see if she would come back, hopefully before she
spent our savings. After receiving only one text the first month,
I went to a lawyer. She basically said there was
very little to do right now other than change the
beneficiaries of my retirement accounts and life insurance. Yay, my
wife gets nothing else if I die alone. while she
is having our adventures. It was only a month and
there was no way to serve her papers. My lawyer
advised me to keep paying the mortgage and the cars.
The cost of trying to get a judge to approve
the sale of joint assets was more than making payments.
I didn't want to ruin my credit by letting one
of our cars get repossessed, but I cannot sell it
because she is on the title. I get random texts
and she sporadically posts on Instagram. Of course, she has
comments turned off. I want to block her so bad,
but my lawyer advised me that it's better to maintain
a communication channel that's not through our kids. Her last
post was from Hawaii. She put in the comments how
great a husband I was for letting her take this trip.
I'm barely making it, paying two cars, a mortgage, household bills, insurance,
hoping there are no more emergencies because I have no savings,
and she is enjoying our trip. F her. I'm so
pissed at her. I helped take care of her mom
for four years and her when she fell apart after
her mom moved into a memory care home and she
returns the favor by abandoning me. I'll never get to
take this trip and have to put off retirement. My
only solace is the kids are pissed at her, but
they will probably forgive her eventually. So basically double F her.
I'm no fool. She's hooking up with guys. She looks good.
She will have zero problem getting men. Update to the story.
I texted her and asked if she was sleeping around.
A week later, she responded that she wasn't. Sure, I
totally believed her. So here I am, drinking alone on
a Friday night, and she is somewhere, probably on a beach,
enjoying life. Triple F her. Edit number two. My lawyer
has given me a bunch of advice and options. It
was just way more than I could possibly include in
this post. I could definitely push the issue harder, and
I might need to at some point, but all that
work is very expensive. Finding her, serving her, getting a
judge to sign off, that's not cheap. I'm following up
soon and I plan on talking about the savings and
my finances until I paid all the bills and realized
how little was left. It didn't hit me that I
had to worry about money. And yeah, ripe stars, let
me know what you think about this dumpster fire of
a situation so far. And after you have done that
in the comments, let's read an update to the story.
OP says, I'm feeling much more positive now that the
financial situation has become a little bit more manageable. Basically,
I'm running up debt that will get paid off when
I sell the house. Even with lawyer fees, I have
six to eight more months before I have to worry
about money, assuming there are no emergencies. My friend's wife
gave me some good advice. Don't go from being a
hero to a villain in your kid's eyes. Basically, how
I talk about and treat my wife will determine my
future relationship with my kids. I honestly don't give a
damn about my wife anymore, but I don't want to
make her a sympathetic figure or drive them away from
both of us. I followed up with the lawyer and
basically she said we are going to have her pay
back the savings she took through a reduction in her
share of the assets. Any division of assets will include
the savings she took and she will also have to
repay the money I spent maintaining the household while she
was gone. There's plenty of equity in her share of
the house and her retirement plans to cover that. She
said that our finances are so intertwined after nearly 25
years of marriage, my wife is gonna get some share
of the assets too. Best case is she agrees to
the terms of the divorce and it's relatively cheap and quick. Otherwise,
it gets complicated and expensive. She gave me a lot
of options and how much I can expect to spend,
so I decided to just mostly wait. I got a
couple of credit cards with promo rates for purchases and transfers.
That gives me breathing room and I can conserve cash.
I'll just pay them off when I sell the house,
now that my financial situation is less stressful. I'm actually
enjoying her being gone. I'm free to do whatever I
want whenever. I don't have to cook or clean or
take care of anyone. The house is quiet for the
first time I can remember. I love my wife, but
her mental health weighed down our marriage. On balance, it
was worth it until now. The first month or so,
I expected her to be there whenever I would get home.
When someone was at the door or if I heard noises,
I would think it was her. I check the doorbell
cam obsessively. I'm not looking forward to her returning, to
be honest. It has to happen, but when she comes back,
I'll have to deal with her, the divorce, getting the
house ready to sell, dividing all our stuff, finding a
new place to live, etc. I'm just hoping that she'll
stay away until after New Year's, but my daughter said
she thinks her mom will be home for Christmas either
to stay or visit. My lawyer will have papers ready
to serve her. Hopefully, she will just agree to the
terms and continue her travels. People had some great advice,
by the way. Renting or selling the house? That's not
really feasible right now, since I would have to fix
some stuff and get it ready to sell and rent.
Since I need a place to live, the amount I
net each month– rent, mortgage, rent on a new apartment,
storage unit– Not worth it. My kids' rooms are still
full of their stuff, and I don't want to spend
the time and effort to clear them out and put
them in storage. Getting a HELOC, this was great advice.
I didn't realize I didn't need both people to get
a loan. If I need more money, I can go
this way. By the way, ripe stars, if you're curious
what HELOC means, it's basically a home equity line of credit.
In the short term, the promo rates on the credit
cards were cheaper and easier than getting a HELOC. Serving
my wife divorce papers or getting divorce in absentia This
is something I might need to do eventually, but the
cost in lawyer fees goes up exponentially in cases like this.
I'm comfortable just waiting for now, look at the phone
bill to see where she's at and possibly going, I
did look at her usage and did notice that she
doesn't post on social media until after she leaves the place.
Like when she posted about Hawaii, she made a call
that date that originated in Los Angeles. She posted about
a cruise and I figured out the dates, trying to
surf her at the port possibly, but it ended a
couple of days before she posted. She tried adding international
calling to her line, But I blocked it so she
removed her phone from our account. Another update to the story.
So my wife texted me in the middle of December
that she would be home for Christmas. I told her
that we, our daughter and I, would be at my
brother's and she obviously wasn't welcome. I would leave her
car in the driveway and the fob in the backyard.
She was not allowed in the house unless I was there.
She also didn't have the keys to get in. She
spent Christmas with her sister. When we got back, I
met with her. I decided not to be overly confrontational
because I didn't want to give her the satisfaction of
thinking I cared enough to be mad. She was taken
aback about how detached I was. I could tell it
bothered her that I didn't show her much emotion, not
even anger. So I just wanted her to agree to
a divorce. This is a summary of several different meetings,
both with and without our daughter. She hasn't wanted to
meet with her mom alone yet. I also asked why
she left without telling anyone. She said she didn't want
to wait a year. She didn't want anyone talking her
out of it. She didn't want to work anymore. She
wanted to leave before her mental health got worse. I'm
sure it's mostly because she didn't want me to stop
her from taking the money. She knew I would take
care of everything with the kids and house when she left.
We had decided to go summer of 2024 for a
few reasons. Packing everything and getting the house ready to
sell was gonna be a lot of work. We wanted
to make sure our daughter graduated college, got a job
and was settled. We wanted to make sure we had
money when we got back. We wouldn't have a house,
cars or job, so we needed money because it could
take months to find work and a place to live.
We didn't want to have any worries or deal with
a mess back home. At some point in our planning,
she began questioning, to herself, not me, if she ever
wanted to go back to our old life. She didn't
want to work full time or buy a house and
stay in one place after we got back. She wasn't
sure what she wanted, but she didn't think she would
figure it out talking to me. I told her that's
the reason we were taking the trip to figure those
things out together, to see what we wanted for the
next part of our life. I asked her why she
didn't want to just get a divorce before she left
and then she wouldn't have had to do this behind
our backs and she would have had plenty of money
without stealing our joint savings. She claims that she didn't
want a divorce, that she wanted us to live whatever
life she figured out. I told her that's not how
marriages work, one person deciding for the other. In talking
and texting our daughter, her family, my texts and voicemails,
she realized I might not forgive her. She was right
about that, by the way, so she might have to
visualize a future without me. This is where I'd hoped
she would say some stupid stuff like she was gonna
squander all her money living in a van and make
travel vlogs or she met some guy that she needed
to wire money to so they could open an ice
cream shop in Alaska. Instead, though, she wants to be
a digital nomad, working part-time fully remote and living in
new places. She tried to convince me to go with her,
but I'll never be able to trust her, plus I
don't love her anymore. Travelling like that for a few
years doesn't sound bad, but she doesn't have a job
or any work lined up, she's not in her 20s anymore,
and that way of living will get old quick, no
close friends, no family. I want her to make it
work so she won't be here trying to get back
in our lives. If you're curious how the kids are doing, well,
our son wouldn't have seen us the entire time she
was gone anyway. He only responds to her with very
short texts, and he told me she wanted to see him,
but he said he was too busy and wouldn't be
able to get away. He lives in the barrack, so
it's an easy excuse to avoid her. My daughter stopped
talking and texting her. She's pretty upset. Her worry turned
to anger when she realized her mom... was not having
a mental breakdown, but was just being selfish. If her
mom was sticking around, they could probably work through it eventually.
I just care that my daughter is happy, so whatever
she decides, I will support. Number two, someone asked, did
she spend all the money? Well, she did about half.
I think she realized she needed to figure it out
before she completely ran out of money. In regards to,
did she sleep with anyone? Well, I didn't ask because
I didn't care. Asking would imply I wanted her back,
or it would matter to me. Even though I didn't ask,
she claims she didn't. Not sure if she's lying or not.
She might just be saying that because she doesn't want
the kids to have another reason to be mad at her.
Does she feel bad for what she put us through? Well,
she claims she does and she wishes she had it
handled differently. She said getting away and figuring herself out
was best for her. I told her she was just
being selfish. When she first left, we were worried something
would happen to her and we would never see her again. Well,
she's always been self-centered and I told her she is
taking the easier route and letting everyone else handle the
difficult parts. If she gets sick, the kids will take
care of her. She goes broke, live with family. abandon
everyone they will forgive her she thinks her siblings and
our children will let her live with them like we
let her mom live with us i'm sure when she
visualizes her future she sees our kids there there might
not be and definitely not in the same way they
were before despite how it might sound i'm actually really
happy with how it all turned out our divorce is
far from final but we've agreed on the big things
we will sell the house how to split the retirement
and profit from the house how to pay back the
money she took and what i spent maintaining the household
I got most of what I wanted from the settlement
and she will soon be, mostly, out of my life.
I won't have to pay alimony and because she is
choosing to make significantly less money than she was, I
won't be forced to support her. That would have been
a kick to the teeth, honestly. She is not my
responsibility anymore and I won't have to care for her
if she does get sick or goes broke. I figured
I would start dating again. I did not realize a
50-year-old man with children out of the house, a good
job and a decent shape would be a catch. I'm
not fighting women off with a stick, but I've had
a lot more interest than I expected. It's been kind
of nice meeting new women. I've worked out the numbers
and I'll be doing pretty well after everything is settled
and I only have to support myself. Not where I
wanted to be at 50, getting divorced and using Reddit
as free therapy sessions. Then again, though, I'm happier now
than I have been in a while. I'm even planning
a little vacation of my own. P.S. Thank you to
everyone that has responded and reached out. It meant a lot.
And yeah, ripe stars, I gotta say, I'm really happy
for OP that things took a little turn in the end.
And while I can't say that everything is better now...
Since still he is worse off financially than he was
before the wife left, he is probably emotionally in a
better place now that they are getting a divorce soon.
I really hope the best for OP and I hope
that he will have a happy life after this. And
the next Reddit story starts like this. Hey everyone out there,
I'm a long time reader and first time poster slash rambler.
I hope that you can bear with me because this
is gonna be a bit of a long story. First,
a cast of the story, me, hello, wife, the love
of my life who passed away, M.I.L., my evil mother-in-law
that I'm convinced does not have a soul. Even before
talking about the events that led to my wife dying,
I need to go back to give everybody an idea
of how the relationship between my wife and mother-in-law had
been during the time I had known both of them.
I think strained would be the best way to put
it because they were never exactly cutting each other off.
They were both just taking long breaks when my mother-in-law
would upset my wife to a breaking point. During the
planning stages of the wedding, my mother-in-law went from being
in the wedding party to not invited to a regular guest.
And this was only within a period of a few
months that all of this happened. It was a vicious
cycle that the two of them would go around in
and I hated seeing how much it was hurting my
wife and how emotionally abusive my mother-in-law was being. Essentially,
my mother-in-law would do or say something that caused my
wife to not want to speak to her anymore. Then,
after giving each other the cold shoulder, my mother-in-law would
apologize to her and sweet-talk her way back into her life.
And when I say apologize, I really mean gaslight. I'm sorry,
you think I hurt you. I think you're remembering it wrong.
And yes, this continued after we were married and I
told her my opinions on what her mother was doing
and how it was hurting her. At the end of
the day, I was not going to force anything since
their relationship was between the two of them. I could
only sit and support my wife when they would have problems,
as well as trying to get my wife to spend
a lot of holidays with my side of the family,
where I knew she wouldn't end up being in tears
by the end of the day. Because along with gaslighting,
mother-in-law somehow turned every compliment into an insult. Oh, I
didn't know they made cute dresses in a size that big. Oh,
those earrings would look so nice on you if they
were gold instead of silver. I just get fired up
thinking about the things she used to say to bring
my wife down and how angry it made me. Now,
to take a very dramatic turn, I need to talk
about how my wife died. We had only been married
for six years. She was an RN and with her
weird shifts, she would sometimes be coming home very late
or in the early hours of the morning. Either way,
somebody swerved into her lane and smashed into her car.
She swerved, but then another car behind her could not
brake in time, causing her to get hit again. She
had major injuries and did not make it. I was
devastated and found myself unable to even breathe without manually
thinking about it. We planned a whole life together and
were trying to get pregnant and start a family. Instead,
I now had to plan a funeral and I had
no idea what I was doing. As the emergency contact though,
I was stuck calling everybody else that needed to know.
that she had died. It was not a long list
since the only close living relative she had was her mother.
I'll be honest that I didn't want to call her
because I knew she would make planning the funeral a
million times harder than it had to be. but it
was her daughter and I believed and still do believe
that she had the right to know. She was not
a total monster and started getting upset and crying about
the fact, agreeing to meet me the next day to
talk about funeral arrangements and things like that. I did
not get any sleep after the news and just stayed
in bed crying until I had to drag myself out
and go meet my mother-in-law. She seemed to be doing
okay and wanted to get down to things like it
was business and not a life lost. Mother-in-law, first things first,
I think she should be buried in this cemetery since
it's where all of our family is buried. Me, okay,
we didn't have plots or anything so I'm open to anywhere. Mother-in-law,
you know that these things are not cheap and I
won't be the one to just flip the bill. Me, what?
I didn't ask you to. I have money, don't worry
about that. I just want her to have the best
and be able to rest in peace. Mother-in-law, I just
don't want people coming and thinking you are cheap and
putting her in a crappy casket. She was just so
nonchalant about the entire thing while I was just dying inside.
The world was crushing me. and she was just making
things worse. And that was not the end, because we
got into a fight on where she would be buried
without the preferred cemetery. Mother-in-law wanted her to be in
a plot that had none available around it, while I
planned to find one with another plot I could purchase
if I chose later to be buried there myself. It
got to the point that I just couldn't handle her,
and my own mother had to step in and take
over the planning. letting me make choices and she would
just make sure that it all happened. Hell, my own
mom was crying and seemed more upset about my wife
dying than my mother-in-law did. I'm not gonna lie and
say that I even remember the day of the funeral.
It was almost like a blur or an out-of-body experience.
I was physically there and talking to people and giving
a speech, but I felt like I was miles away
and just looking in from the outside. It was the
only time I ever had that happen and don't have
any words for it. What I do remember was after
the funeral, mother-in-law started asking me weird questions about my house.
The house that we had purchased together and had both
of our names on the deed. She was asking specifically
about me moving and selling the house. Me, I was
not planning on selling the house. Mother-in-law, well, you have
to sell it because otherwise I cannot get my half. Me,
half of what? Her stuff? You can come by and
have some of her things. I was out of it
and just not understanding what she was talking about. I
assumed she wanted stuff of her daughter. and I was
more than happy to share any items that held sentimental value. Mother-in-law? Ah, no.
Why would I want your stuff? I'm talking about half
of the house. I'm the beneficiary in her will. Me?
I have a copy of her will that we both
made a year ago. It says that the spouse gets
full ownership of everything. Mother-in-law? Nonsense. She made a will
when she turned 18 and left everything to me. You
cannot just have two wills. Okay, for this point, she
is not wrong, but not right either. You cannot have
two valid wills when you legally make a second one.
Your old one is invalidated. Any court in the country
will follow the newest version of the will unless there's
reason to believe it was signed under duress or when
the person was not in a sound state of mind.
Something like that. Mother-in-law refused to listen and demanded half
the home was hers and I either needed to sell
the house or move out and give it to her.
I was just done at this point. I was done
playing nice. I was done being polite to this horrible woman.
I told her to F off. She didn't listen and
this is kind of when the story gets into the
second part. When lawyers and legal action had to get involved,
I say had to, but really it was only because
she made it happen. She threatened to sue me if
I did not sell the house and give her half
the money or move out. I did not do anything
because I knew I was right, but I also just
did not have the mental energy to do anything. Mother-in-law
had been busy though the next couple days filing a
claim of inheritance with the county using what I assumed
was the old will somehow. I now got a lawyer
because I was a little worried at this point that
she was gonna get my house. He sent her a
cease and desist letter making it very public knowledge to
the county that the house was left to me in
a more recent will. Great so now the county knew
it was my house and everything was great right? Well, no,
because mother-in-law was too entitled of a person to just
let it go and instead decided to take things to
a very illegal level. She filed new documents with the
county that showed that she was the owner of the house.
The documents being two things in particular. Number one, her
old will that now suddenly and magically had a new
date on it. Number two, papers showing that my wife
signed over the property to mother-in-law before she died. Both
of these things being extremely fake and clearly forged to
anybody that knew her. Still, to deal with a case
of a document being forged, an actual case had to
be filed against her for it. With me claiming it
was fake and my lawyer pushing the DA to investigate
the matter, they did and agreed that the document seemed
tampered with. She was arrested on those charges and decided
that she wanted to go ahead and plead not guilty,
thinking that she could somehow still get away with just
whining and being able to take my house away from me. Which,
by the way, in the meantime of all this, she
was not just sitting and waiting, she was still calling
and texting me about leaving the house as well as
calling real estate agencies to come and get an estimate.
She was even hiring them in one case to sell
my house. I had these people coming over to try
and get in my house to look at it and
me needing to kick them out. With some not even
wanting to leave easily because mother-in-law claimed that I was
just a squatter living there and had no rights to
the home. It was so stressful and I was on edge,
worried about people showing up to my house and trying
to move in or something. I realize now that some
might think her getting arrested just for the suspicion was
not very strong and couldn't hold up. Well, what I
found out weeks later, but will tell you now, is
that she apparently had a criminal history. A history that
was directly related to a previous conviction for forgery in
order to attain property. She actually was a criminal this
entire time, and I never knew about it before. I
don't know if my wife was also unaware, or just
felt like it was not an important thing for me
to know. Since she pleaded not guilty, the entire thing
is going to trial, but I'm still a bit nervous
about everything. I've never been part of something like this,
and don't know how to act outside of TV shows.
I also left things vague, since this is still ongoing,
and I don't want to mess up the trial in
a few days by posting something and dropping names or
locations or anything. If people want, I can give an
update after the trial and what is going to end
up happening to my mother-in-law and my house. And now
we got an update to the story. It reads like this. Wow,
I did not expect people to actually read through that
entire thing and want more. Also, I want to thank
everybody for their condolences regarding my wife. It means a
lot to feel like people out there in the universe
care and understand what I'm going through. and for the
people who are more versed in psychology telling me that
the out-of-body thing I felt was normal after her loss. Okay,
so I'm updating because the trial and everything finished yesterday
and I have a lot of news regarding mother-in-law. First
thing being that going to court was not as scary
as I assumed it was going to be, mainly because
I got to see mother-in-law in a state where she
couldn't just talk as she wanted and insult people or
gaslight her way out of situations. They also brought in
a forensic expert that specialized in handwriting. They took the
documents mother-in-law had and my documents and compared them against
something else that was already confirmed to have been written
by my wife. Things she had written at the hospital
where only she could have actually done it. He was
asked a ton of questions and pointed out these very
specific things about handwriting that told him how he would
know if it was hers or not. The biggest thing
being something that I didn't even realize was a thing.
My wife was left-handed and it turns out that an
expert can tell just by looking at something if the
person was left or right-handed. The notes she had from work? Left-handed.
The signature on my copy of the will and deed? Left-handed.
The stuff that my mother-in-law was claiming to be legit? Right-handed.
It was not looking good for mother-in-law, but she was
still trying to claim that the house belonged to her. That,
as the mother, she had a right to a certain
percentage of her daughter's assets by default, which is just
not a law. And I don't think it has ever
been a law, at least in this county. Finally, what
I learned was that even within a certain crime, there
are severities. And forging a will and deed are pretty
high on that severity list when it comes to forgery.
She was found guilty by the jury, and because of
what she forged and her past conviction, clearly not giving
her enough of a message, she was given five years
in prison. That last part was during the sentencing hearing
about two days ago, and I've just been in so
much shock since then. I can now change the deed
to be solely in my name, to avoid anything else
she might want to start with once she gets out.
It just feels weird, like an entire family line just ended. Well,
I know she is still alive, but just in prison,
and it feels a little similar to me. Anyway, she
is gone. Update number two, I've been still getting a
lot of questions that I want to clear up. The
first being people asking why my wife even had a
will when she was 18 years old in the first place,
and that reason pretty much relates to her job. When
she got into being a nursing student, she learned the
hard way that people can die young with no warning.
She wanted to have a will in case she was
ever in an emergency like that, and then after being
married and having more assets, she wanted to get an
updated one as well as have me get one too.
It was that forward thinking that is one of the
big reasons I fell in love with her so hard.
The other big questions people are asking is why I
don't have a restraining order against mother-in-law. Well, that also
has a pretty simple answer in the fact that having
one right now would not be of any use. Those
things usually expire after a few years and she would
still be in prison. No judge would give me a
restraining order that has no purpose right now. So if
she tries to contact me after she gets out of prison,
then I would consider getting one. And here ripe stars
rest in peace. I'm so sorry for OP about what
happened to his wife, but I do hope that this
stupid mother-in-law will never bother him again. And the next
one is an M.I.D.A. whole story. I, 23 male, was
repeatedly stuck playing the part of helper and babysitter on
family outings. I had to move out of my parents'
house because I kept being forced to help watch my
three nephews. Last year we took a family vacation in
summer to the coast. I rode along with my parents
and they paid for my hotel room. Well, only I
had to share that room with three rowdy boys because
my sister and her husband wanted a room to themselves.
I was promised time to do my own things on
the vacation. But instead, I ended up having to help
with these kids. I complained to everyone about it and
was reminded that I was there for free. And then
we pretty much just did only one thing I wanted
to do, which was tour an art gallery. I like
doing this whenever I'm at the coast, but the kids
find it boring. This year, my parents have a beach
trip planned for June, and they assumed that I'd be
riding along the same way as last year, but I refused.
I said I'd be driving myself and paying for my
own hotel stay to have my own room. My parents
were shocked and tried to remind me of the cost.
I said it was no worry. I've got a good
job and decent running car. I can more than afford it.
That's when the buts started. I stated the previously listed
things as why I'll be driving myself and paying for myself.
I want to be able to enjoy this vacation as
an adult and not be treated like a child like
last year. My parents told my sister and she called
to blow up at me that I'll be ruining the
vacation if I'm off doing my own thing while she
has to wrangle her three boys. I ended up yelling
at her that last year all she did was rope
me into her mess. I did not really get to
do much of anything I wanted to do and I
was treated like the bad guy for wanting to just
go to an art gallery. I'm a grown man, I
deserve my own vacation too. Now my sister is not
speaking to me and my parents are still trying to
convince me to just ride with them to keep the peace.
I'm still refusing but the pressure is getting to me.
Am I the a-hole for not giving in? I know
they will have a pretty hard time when they won't
have another person there to help. Edit, it's barely been
an hour since I posted, but my sister is apparently
a Reddit lurker in the morning, and she saw my post.
Not only is she furious with me, she is also
upset that no one in the comments is siding with her.
To make it short, she went on a big rant
about how it's so hard to be a parent to triplets,
and the least I could do is help because I
am young and single, and she needs a break. I
stood my ground on my decision and now she is
calling our parents to get them involved. I'm expecting a
call from them any minute. And yeah, ripe stars, let
me know if you think OP is the a-hole or
not here. However, to be honest, I don't know any
universe where OP could be the a-hole. Comment number one said,
not the a-hole, your sister can pay a babysitter to
come on the vacation if she doesn't want to deal
with her three children. Personally, I would not even go
because even in a separate hotel room, they are not
gonna leave you alone about this. They feel very entitled
for your babysitting services. Comment number two, not the a-hole,
it is four persons for three boys, if they need
more help, they can hire a nanny. Plus, claps to
your sister, she trapped you in free babysitting by making
your parents pay your room. Wow, the entitlement is real. Update, well,
I'm off work now, so I can tell more of
what went down. I guess you could say it's over.
My sister got our parents involved, they looked at my post,
and were absolutely horrified by the continuous influx of commenters. Yes,
they are very angry with me that I posted here,
but I told them that if they had just listened
to me to begin with, I would have never needed
to do this. I'm sick of the whole keep the
peace mentality that sacrifices me to placate my sister. They
in turn went off on my sister, and to make
a long story short, the whole vacation has been cancelled.
The hotel was not booked yet anyway, but my parents
are arguing with my sister and my sister is blaming
me and my nephews are crying because they are not
going to the beach. My sister called me at lunch
and basically implied that I have no life, which is
why I have time to help. I recorded that and
told our parents and that's currently what they are fighting about.
Small update, I was not gonna update again, but here's
a little more. My parents said that they won't ever
push babysitting of my nephews on me again and have
agreed that what happened last year was unfair to me.
Right now, they are very angry with my sister for
telling me I should help her because she thinks I
have no life. My sister is playing the victim, and
my brother-in-law is basically saying nope to the whole mess
and spending most of his time at work. And yeah,
ripe stars, I would say that's a positive outcome for OP,
and the parents finally noticed what is going on. Props
to OP for standing up for himself and not letting
his sister exploit him. And yeah guys, thank you so
much for listening to this episode. If you enjoyed my content,
please don't forget to rate the podcast positively. That would
help me so much. Thanks a lot and I will
talk to you again soon.
