Comeback Kids: the Phillies are running down Atlanta in the NL East
The Phillies not only enjoyed another late-inning comeback on Sunday in New York, but they moved within three games of the Braves in the NL East.
The Phils were 9-19 and 10 ½ games behind the Braves on April 26, which was Rob Thomson’s final game as manager. FanGraphs gave the Phils just a 6.9 percent chance to win the division. But they woke up on Monday 47-37 with a 33.2 percent chance to win the division. Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper and Brandon Marsh continue to lead the way offensively.
In fact, Schwarber and Harper both have a chance to finish the season with 400 home runs,

Speaker 1: Hi, This is Kyle Sharber and welcome to the Philly Show.
Speaker 2: Kyle Schwarber with another late inning home run that sparked
Speaker 2: another comeback victory for the Phillies. The Phillies go five
Speaker 2: and two on a road trip through Washington and New York,
Speaker 2: and the Atlanta Braves have taken notice of the Phillies
Speaker 2: in the National League East. Ruben Tomorrow Junior, Jim Salisbury,
Speaker 2: Todd's lucky. It's the Phillies Show. It is Monday, June
Speaker 2: twenty ninth, twenty twenty six. It's time for First Pitch.
Speaker 2: Here we go. First Pitch is powered by Parks Casino,
Speaker 2: Pennsylvania's number one casino. Another fun weekend for the Phillies.
Speaker 2: He take takes Saturday out of the equation right. Saturday
Speaker 2: was a dud, but another good weekend for the Phillies.
Speaker 2: You know I read in Jim's story NBC Sports Philadelphia.
Speaker 2: The Phillies are the first team in Major League Baseball
Speaker 2: history to rebound from ten games under five hundred and
Speaker 2: get to ten over five hundred before the end of June.
Speaker 2: There's an MLB first. We were talking last week about
Speaker 2: they became the first team in Major League Baseball history
Speaker 2: to hit go ahead home runs in the ninth inning
Speaker 2: in three consecutive games. And now there are only three
Speaker 2: games behind the Braves in the National League East Reuven.
Speaker 3: And here's another first. Kyle Schuber fastest to thirty home runs.
Speaker 2: That's right in the history of.
Speaker 1: The franchise, right, what I mean, they're doing some crazy things.
Speaker 3: Man. After an abysmal start, everybody wanted everyone fired. Everybody
Speaker 3: had to get kicked off the team. Zach Wheeler came back.
Speaker 3: They did make the matter a gerial move, and that's
Speaker 3: probably part of what's going on.
Speaker 1: But I don't think that's the real big reason.
Speaker 3: I think the real big reason that the guy started
Speaker 3: to play and and and they started to look themselves
Speaker 3: in the mirror and said, hey.
Speaker 1: I got to do my part.
Speaker 3: Harper's been very very good, if not elite. I mean,
Speaker 3: he's one of the best players in baseball again, and
Speaker 3: he's showing why, especially offensively. And Kyle Schwarber is Kyle Schwarber.
Speaker 3: I mean, it's been pretty amazing. Brandon marsh swinging swinging
Speaker 3: the bat, didn't do a lot against against the Mets,
Speaker 3: but did his part certainly against the Nationals.
Speaker 2: So yeah, I.
Speaker 1: Mean it's been fun to watch. Man.
Speaker 3: They're getting the job done, and they're winning baseball games
Speaker 3: and final ways to win as opposed to finding ways
Speaker 3: to lose.
Speaker 4: Last two weekends, last two weekends were just very exciting.
Speaker 4: I mean, offense really makes the game exciting, and they've
Speaker 4: put up, you know, two weekends in a row, big
Speaker 4: offensive outputs and a couple series wins against the Mets.
Speaker 4: The thing that jumps out at me is how you
Speaker 4: know on May twenty two they were ten and a
Speaker 4: half games out May twenty two, ten and a half
Speaker 4: games out. What's that like six weeks ago? And now
Speaker 4: they're three out? Ladies and gentlemen, we have a pennant race.
Speaker 1: Yeah, oh, there is definitely a pennant race.
Speaker 2: Well, here's my colleague at MLB dot com, Mark Bowman,
Speaker 2: sent this tweet out yesterday. Walt Weiss, when asked about
Speaker 2: the Phillies cutting the Braves lead to three games, I
Speaker 2: don't care what the lead is. I could care less.
Speaker 2: We had a big lead early there, there were there
Speaker 2: are several months to go. I'm not worried about anybody
Speaker 2: else but ourselves. Right now. Now, I will point out
Speaker 2: that by Walt White saying I could care less actually
Speaker 2: means he cares a lot, So I'm sure he meant
Speaker 2: I couldn't care less, right, little little grammar. Lesson for
Speaker 2: Walt Weiss and everybody else out there. But yeah, it's
Speaker 2: amazing that they've clawed this far back, come this far
Speaker 2: back so quickly. You guys will love this, Ruben. I
Speaker 2: know you love your percentages and your projected standings.
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I love it.
Speaker 2: I looked at Ruben. I did this for you last night.
Speaker 2: I said, I'm gonna look it up for Ruben because
Speaker 2: I know Ruben's gonna ask me where is it? So Fangrafts.
Speaker 2: On April twenty six, Rob Thompson's final game as manager,
Speaker 2: they had a six point nine percent chance to win
Speaker 2: the division. As of today, they have a thirty three
Speaker 2: point two percent chance to win the division. How about that, Ruben?
Speaker 1: What percentages?
Speaker 3: And you know you play the games? My friends play
Speaker 3: the games because you're not. The games are not played
Speaker 3: on a computer. The pakodas and the projections and all
Speaker 3: that bs that goes on. You can stick it up
Speaker 3: your purtuit because it is the players at play and
Speaker 3: show who is the best and when and that's the
Speaker 3: bottom line.
Speaker 4: And when Rob was fired on the twenty eighth of
Speaker 4: April with a nine to nineteen record twenty eight games,
Speaker 4: they had the worst starters ERA in Major League Baseball
Speaker 4: five point eight. Oh oh yeah. And coming into Saturday's game.
Speaker 4: I looked it up Saturday, they had the third best
Speaker 4: starters ERA in the majors since then, So, I mean,
Speaker 4: there's the long and short of it. Pitching.
Speaker 1: That's it. It's starting pitching. It always is and always
Speaker 1: will be. And at the end of the day, in
Speaker 1: the playoffs, it becomes all your pitching.
Speaker 4: Right. But what a you know, what a what a
Speaker 4: fantastic trip. I mean, it's awesome. You go five and two,
Speaker 4: and you know, there is kind of a little flip
Speaker 4: side to this, all these comeback wins. The bullpen blue
Speaker 4: four leads concern, but they fought back and got big
Speaker 4: hits late, big big hits. Schwarber amazing him and Harper
Speaker 4: having these big You know, Harper is like fifth or
Speaker 4: sixth in the National League in ops, having a terrific
Speaker 4: year he is.
Speaker 2: He's tenth tenth overall in Major League baseball. Schwarber is
Speaker 2: third overall Major League Baseball. So they have three the
Speaker 2: top ten hitters in the big leagues in ops and
Speaker 2: Brandon Marsh's and you know what is he top? I
Speaker 2: think he's like top twenty five. So there you go.
Speaker 2: You just need one big right handed bat to start
Speaker 2: coming through. What have you guys thought of Trey Turners
Speaker 2: had had other multi hit games over the past week.
Speaker 2: I think he had last on this road trip. He
Speaker 2: hit like three thirty three, he was fifteen for forty five,
Speaker 2: couple doubles.
Speaker 4: Better he has.
Speaker 3: He has been improved, There's no question about it. My
Speaker 3: one big concern is that infield defense. I mean he
Speaker 3: has not played well defensively. There times when even Harper
Speaker 3: at times has not shown a great defensive prowess. And
Speaker 3: those are really two huge positions shortstop and then you
Speaker 3: say what you want, shortstop and first base probably the
Speaker 3: two most important positions in the field. And if you
Speaker 3: look at the metrics, that's one thing. But I'm watching
Speaker 3: with my eyes and Turner's not having the same, not
Speaker 3: nearly the same year he had last year defensively. In fact,
Speaker 3: he's having one or the more poor years he's had defensively,
Speaker 3: and Harper has fallen off a little bit defensively as well,
Speaker 3: So those guys have to sort of tighten it up
Speaker 3: because that becomes really important as the season wears on.
Speaker 4: They lost Saturday's game because of their defense, not because
Speaker 4: of errors, but because of plays that should have been
Speaker 4: made that weren't made, and he gave the Mets extra chances.
Speaker 4: That ball Rinconas drops in front of Rincona's and right
Speaker 4: field should have been caught. And then who was it
Speaker 4: Soto that crushed one? By or lind or Lindor that
Speaker 4: crushed one? Excuse me by Harper? And Harper admitted after
Speaker 4: the game he was upset with himself for not getting
Speaker 4: it and that led to a four run inning, and
Speaker 4: they gave the Metals extra chances to the Mets capitalized.
Speaker 4: So they lost that game on defense. You know, their
Speaker 4: advanced metrics on defense tell a story. Second to last
Speaker 4: twenty ninth in outs above average according to the stat Cast.
Speaker 4: They're not a sound and not a good defensive team.
Speaker 2: They really haven't been for years. I mean, they have
Speaker 2: seasons where they make improvements, but I feel like that's
Speaker 2: always been their bugaboo, so to speak, is the is
Speaker 2: the defense. The underlying defense has never been really tight.
Speaker 2: From beginning of the season to the end of the season.
Speaker 2: Like I said, they've had good stretches and whatnot. Every
Speaker 2: team does, but that is an issue. But yeah, the
Speaker 2: Phillies making their way back up to what do you
Speaker 2: think the Braves are thinking right now? I think they
Speaker 2: got to just be it's too early to get panicked.
Speaker 4: I guess oh they noticed, come on, they know.
Speaker 3: Oh listen, they're they're feeling them. There's there's no question
Speaker 3: that they're there. I'm sure they're feeling them. I'm also
Speaker 3: sure that they knew that they were a much better
Speaker 3: team than when they faced them early in the season.
Speaker 2: That's true.
Speaker 3: And so at some point you know they're gonna go
Speaker 3: head to head again and those those battles are gonna
Speaker 3: be really fun as the sweet, as the uh, as
Speaker 3: the summer and fall wears.
Speaker 4: On, these guys notice everything. I was talking to a
Speaker 4: couple of players over the weekend and those guys up
Speaker 4: in the top deck at in Washington, who are yelling,
Speaker 4: you know, few Phillies and they noticed that. They were
Speaker 4: talking about it in the dugout as it was going on.
Speaker 4: Some are amused bias, some are like, screw these guys,
Speaker 4: let's go. So they notice everything.
Speaker 2: So what you're saying is is when they say I
Speaker 2: don't hear that stuff in the stadium, they might not
Speaker 2: always be telling the truth.
Speaker 3: Well, what is interesting is as you're playing, you don't
Speaker 3: sure to lock those things out, But when you're in
Speaker 3: the bench, how do you not?
Speaker 1: I mean, you're you're you're not.
Speaker 3: As vapor focused on on the game itself, so you
Speaker 3: sort of, uh, you aren't blocking that stuff out anymore
Speaker 3: when you're hanging out on the bench, but yeah, you're
Speaker 3: hearing it.
Speaker 2: One of my favorite moments was it might have been
Speaker 2: like three, four or five years ago at this point,
Speaker 2: but some Braves fan I think it was that truest
Speaker 2: Park was really getting on Harper behind the visiting dugout.
Speaker 2: He was saying, you're you know, you know, Akuna, you're
Speaker 2: not as good as a coon. You'll never be a coon. O,
Speaker 2: You'll never be a COONa. And Bryce turns it around
Speaker 2: and goes, it's a coon ya, a coon. Ya know
Speaker 2: your player's name. You also know your till day the
Speaker 2: till day on the name there, it's a coon ya.
Speaker 3: That's like saying Castellano's oh Castellana, or how about Pat Burrell. Yeah,
Speaker 3: that one there was there was please know your own
Speaker 3: players names.
Speaker 1: Pat.
Speaker 2: I love that past barrel. He's got.
Speaker 3: My good God, bless folks.
Speaker 4: That game yesterday, though, Ruben, there was a ton to
Speaker 4: that game. You know, they their bullpen was tight roping
Speaker 4: all day and it wasn't like totally impressive. They had,
Speaker 4: you know, Sugar had a tough inning. But in the
Speaker 4: in the what in the seventh and eighth innings, they
Speaker 4: you know, they stranded five base runners. Even if you
Speaker 4: go back to the fifth, they stranded you know, Lozaro
Speaker 4: stranded three.
Speaker 3: Fourteen base runners. Date stranded fourteen base runners. And listen,
Speaker 3: a lot of that was futility from the Mets. But
Speaker 3: it also and I don't know if you want to
Speaker 3: get into this now, Todd, but what what I saw
Speaker 3: from Kirkering, the combination of Kirkering and j.
Speaker 1: T was pretty special. See this is the reason why,
Speaker 1: and I said it on the broadcast. JT may have
Speaker 1: earned in a lot of ways, is three year contract.
Speaker 3: By the way he handled Oryan Kirkering in the eighth inning,
Speaker 3: he struggled to throw his fastball for a strike. He
Speaker 3: could not throw his fastball for a strike. Imagine this,
Speaker 3: Now he has to throw his breaking ball and everybody's
Speaker 3: looking for his breaking ball.
Speaker 1: And he really commanded it.
Speaker 3: Just okay, But he comes back and he throws two
Speaker 3: fastballs past Alvarez in a very very critical part of
Speaker 3: the game, and he goes to those two pitches even
Speaker 3: though he was ahead in the count, because JT knew
Speaker 3: that this guy would chase. And JT calls two high
Speaker 3: fastballs up and in on Alvarez and he chases the
Speaker 3: hell out of him to punch him out to get
Speaker 3: out of the inning.
Speaker 1: And that, to me, epitomizes the.
Speaker 3: Importance of what JT brings to this ball club and
Speaker 3: the reason why they won the game.
Speaker 1: I mean, it's one.
Speaker 3: I mean, obviously, Mauricio had a horrendous at bat nine
Speaker 3: straight balls and then pops one up, and that was
Speaker 3: huge for Oryan Kirkering. But on top of that, I
Speaker 3: think that was actually against Sugar. But the reality of
Speaker 3: it was the reality of it was later on, when
Speaker 3: Kirkering was really struggling to get out, he comes up
Speaker 3: with a couple of unbelievable pitches in that sequence because
Speaker 3: JT showed his trust in him and the conviction in
Speaker 3: calling a pitch to get the out.
Speaker 4: Yes, huge, no question. He's a huge, huge part of
Speaker 4: that pitching staff. And I think, just think sometimes, you know,
Speaker 4: people look at him and only determine his value by
Speaker 4: what he does in the batter's box at the plate,
Speaker 4: where his big value is behind the plate, And he's
Speaker 4: crucial to this team's If this team is built on pitching,
Speaker 4: he's crucial to that unit's success. To me, he you know,
Speaker 4: he's worth every pen of what he got.
Speaker 2: You want to pitch.
Speaker 3: And I think back like May second, right around the
Speaker 3: same time, right around the same time that Wheeler.
Speaker 1: Came back, j T came back. Remember they were catching
Speaker 1: with Marshawn and Stubbs.
Speaker 3: No disrespect, but the reality of it is, when you
Speaker 3: don't have your main battery with you and you don't
Speaker 3: have Wheeler as you're number one or number two whatever
Speaker 3: you want to call one a that makes a huge difference, man.
Speaker 3: And I can't stress how important those two moves were made.
Speaker 3: And then they went on an unbelievable run and they
Speaker 3: continue to do so, and it's not necessarily because the
Speaker 3: manager was changed.
Speaker 2: You want your pictures to have all the confidence in
Speaker 2: the world in your catchers. If you need another example,
Speaker 2: an example of outside the Phillies, take a look at
Speaker 2: Dalton Rushing and show Hey Otani the other day if
Speaker 2: Dodger Stadium. Show Hey was so upset with Dalton Rushing
Speaker 2: that he started calling his own pitches. And then Dalton
Speaker 2: Rushing Rushing sidled up to him in the dugout and
Speaker 2: show Hey walked away.
Speaker 1: So and the guy was like crying on the veiel.
Speaker 1: There's no crying in baseball.
Speaker 2: There's no crying in baseball. So you want to have
Speaker 2: you want to have Zach Wheeler and Christopher Sanchez and
Speaker 2: O Ryan especially guy like Ryan Kirkering and in a
Speaker 2: really tight spot, go I trust this guy with everything.
Speaker 2: And that is that is j t Rio Muto. That
Speaker 2: was Parks. That was first pitch powered by Parks Casino.
Speaker 2: Must be twenty one gambling problem call one eight hundred gambler.

Speaker 2: We love it. We love it indeed, and it is Monday,
Speaker 2: Jim Rubin, you know what Monday means. Oh that's the
Speaker 2: wrong one. Guys. I hit that that one, not that one.
Speaker 2: Let's hit this one. If you're listening to us, you
Speaker 2: have no idea what I just did. Uh. It's time
Speaker 2: for Best Week, brought to you by Manco and Manco Pisa,
Speaker 2: Manco Manca. When you want the best of the best,
Speaker 2: go to Manco Manca. We got a show coming up
Speaker 2: at Manco next month. More details to come on that. Jim,
Speaker 2: who's your Manco? Who you giving a slice to this week?
Speaker 4: There's so many candidates. Can I go big picture like
Speaker 4: a broad view?
Speaker 2: You can.
Speaker 1: You can do whatever you want, Jimmy, it's your show.
Speaker 4: And I have a Manco shirt on, and uh, you
Speaker 4: know I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go with a concept.
Speaker 4: I think the word resilience is way overused in sports today.
Speaker 4: It's become a cliche. I'm just gonna call it toughness
Speaker 4: and guts about grit. They grit the way the offense
Speaker 4: performed all of them, you know, on this trip late
Speaker 4: in ballgames from the seventh inning on this offense on
Speaker 4: this trip scored twenty six runs and hit seven home runs.
Speaker 4: They hit ten home runs on the trip, I think
Speaker 4: seven of them from the seventh inning on, like all
Speaker 4: game deciders, you know, like all huge difference makers. So
Speaker 4: I'm just gonna give it to the toughness and the
Speaker 4: comeback spirit and how they just they just refused to
Speaker 4: die and just you know, made those victories happen with
Speaker 4: having great at bats when the game was on the line.
Speaker 4: I know that the Nationals bullpen stinks, but you still
Speaker 4: got to deliver. How many times have we seen guys
Speaker 4: pop up against against stinky bullpens. You're still going to
Speaker 4: go up there and deliver. And you know, from Schwarward
Speaker 4: to Harper to Marsh to Hill, stop stop amazing performances
Speaker 4: late in games, entertaining baseball, finishing with w's and loud
Speaker 4: music in the clubhouse and happy people, happy team and
Speaker 4: wins and closing the gap on the Braves. That's my
Speaker 4: manco and manco best of the week. I thought it
Speaker 4: was a great, great week for the Phillies.
Speaker 1: Great call and dire I say, clutching up, clutch up up.
Speaker 3: Remember that Remember that company that was a great shirt
Speaker 3: company that was started by David Tomorrow and Ruben Tomorrow.
Speaker 1: But it fizzle.
Speaker 4: You got to bring it back.
Speaker 1: We are thinking about it because.
Speaker 2: It's a great We still have the show.
Speaker 4: I'll invest eight dollars.
Speaker 1: You're in it, Todd, who you got?
Speaker 2: Uh? I'm going to go with Brandon Marsh. He had
Speaker 2: another big week. He batted over four hundred this past week.
Speaker 2: He didn't He had those two big home runs last
Speaker 2: week in Washington, the game tying home run and that
Speaker 2: ninth inning, that ridiculous comeback. I mean, they had a
Speaker 2: bunch of ridiculous comebacks. And then when they were down
Speaker 2: I think it was in the last game of that
Speaker 2: National Series, they were down five to nothing and he
Speaker 2: hits a two run home run and all of a
Speaker 2: sudden boom, all right, they're down three. You know, like that,
Speaker 2: he got them back in the game. And this is
Speaker 2: a guy who is counting on the fans to vote
Speaker 2: him into his first National League All Star Game, and
Speaker 2: he's really kind of answered the bell there in terms
Speaker 2: of his production the past week. But you know, there's
Speaker 2: a lot of a lot of options, But I'm going
Speaker 2: to go with Brandon Marsh just because he keeps doing it,
Speaker 2: and again it's not one of the He's not a
Speaker 2: guy that got off to a fast start. He caught
Speaker 2: a lot of fans attention early and is kind of
Speaker 2: fading as the All Star Game approaches to go ad,
Speaker 2: does he really deserved to make the All Star team?
Speaker 2: He is stepping up as it gets closer and closer
Speaker 2: to July, the Midsummer Classic Act Citizens Bank Park.
Speaker 1: Yes, so good calls.
Speaker 3: I mean, there's so many different guys to choose from,
Speaker 3: and I'm sort of going to go off the board
Speaker 3: and not with somebody who necessarily had unbelievable performance, but
Speaker 3: somebody who actually showed a lot of grid also, and
Speaker 3: that's a zus Lozardo Sousan. Lozardo had thirteen punchouts in
Speaker 3: his one start against the Nationals. Was the bugaboo for
Speaker 3: him was and has been, you know, runners on base
Speaker 3: and really sort of struggling through getting through that, didn't
Speaker 3: get a lot of defensive support, ended up going from
Speaker 3: five and runs to one and run because they finally
Speaker 3: changed it proper changed an error properly in that one
Speaker 3: game against Washington. But recency bias for me because yesterday
Speaker 3: didn't have his fine stuff. Had to battle through a
Speaker 3: thirty pitch inning in the fifth inning to sort of
Speaker 3: get out of another jam.
Speaker 1: And he's been struggling to.
Speaker 3: Get out of jams and to make the pitch he
Speaker 3: needs to to keep the team.
Speaker 1: In the game.
Speaker 3: And I thought he did a really good job of
Speaker 3: staying poised and making pitches when he had to to
Speaker 3: get out.
Speaker 1: Of these jams. Again.
Speaker 3: Didn't have a ton of strikeouts in the game, and
Speaker 3: you got to give, you know, some of the Mets
Speaker 3: some love for battling with him, but and didn't have
Speaker 3: his fine stuff, But he showed a ton of grint,
Speaker 3: and he showed a lot of maturity. And his era
Speaker 3: has been plummeting, in my opinion, has been going down
Speaker 3: his UH and his whip as well from the beginning
Speaker 3: of the season. I just think that he showed a
Speaker 3: lot of maturity and fortitude in the last couple of
Speaker 3: outings such that I'm gonna give them a little slice of.
Speaker 1: The pie, a small slice, but a slice nonetheless, so.
Speaker 4: Good to it. That was huge what he did in
Speaker 4: you know, bases loading the fifth inning, he gets two
Speaker 4: big outs, uh, you know that strikeout on Butshett was huge.
Speaker 4: Ninety eight up in the zone. I mean it's like
Speaker 4: a lot like Alvarado and Kirkering, you know, tightrope, some
Speaker 4: difficult moments, but man, when it was when it was
Speaker 4: on the line, they made pitches. But hey, can we
Speaker 4: give an honorary like like slice or maybe like a
Speaker 4: cal zone too, you could get.
Speaker 2: How about how about a personal pan pizza?
Speaker 4: Personal a personal Panmanko's pizza. We gotta we gotta talk
Speaker 4: about Derek Hill's catch and Todd Brandon Marsh had a
Speaker 4: little piece of that. He's communicating with the whole way
Speaker 4: and he did it. You know that guy. Little things
Speaker 4: you know, you don't see that happened under the radar.
Speaker 4: He was a little piece of that play and an
Speaker 4: important piece of that play. But I'm sitting in the
Speaker 4: press box he rubin you two, and I'm watching that
Speaker 4: guy run ninety nine feet and when you got about
Speaker 4: thirty feet away, I'm said to myself, I think he's
Speaker 4: going to catch this ball. He just had this look
Speaker 4: of determination and he was running like a man who
Speaker 4: was going to get that ball. And he got that ball.
Speaker 4: What an amazing catch.
Speaker 3: So yeah, I got to talk about this is from
Speaker 3: the outfield coaches perspective, So and I talked a little
Speaker 3: bit about this on the broadcast, but as I go
Speaker 3: back and look at it, he did pretty much everything
Speaker 3: you want an.
Speaker 1: Outfielder to do. He had a direct.
Speaker 3: Line to the ball. There was no banana ing. It
Speaker 3: was very, very direct. He had a great line to it,
Speaker 3: that's number one, and a great jump. He had his
Speaker 3: technique when I watched his eyes. Subtly, you talk about
Speaker 3: when you get close to the wall, you go ball
Speaker 3: wall to pick up where the wall is and then
Speaker 3: back to the ball to catch. He went ball wall
Speaker 3: ball naturally. He went in stride on the jump. The
Speaker 3: timing was impeccable, the athleticism was phenomenal, and it was
Speaker 3: one of the best catches I have ever seen. It
Speaker 3: will go up there with the Ken Griffy catches, with
Speaker 3: the catch over the shoulder by Jimmy Edmonds, with so
Speaker 3: many different catches that we've seen over the years. I
Speaker 3: went back and saw who was at Austin, who was
Speaker 3: the outfielder played briefly with the Mets and the Detroit
Speaker 3: Tigers had a long time anyway, he had an unbelievable
Speaker 3: catching in Boston against I think really hit a bomb
Speaker 3: in the right center field. He went over the fence
Speaker 3: to catch one and landed over the fence. So many
Speaker 3: great catches in this one, for me, one of the
Speaker 3: best I've ever.
Speaker 1: Witnessed in my career, and it changed the game. It
Speaker 1: literally it's a home run. And then Wheeler goes on
Speaker 1: in deals after that. I mean, soda has been so hot,
Speaker 1: so good lately to change it literally was a game cheating.
Speaker 1: He won the game in the first innings.
Speaker 3: Miller said, how about that, dude won the baseball game
Speaker 3: in the first inning.
Speaker 1: How about thea He didn't He didn't He didn't.
Speaker 4: Drift back and stick his glove above the wall like
Speaker 4: we see some robberies. He was dead sprint and then
Speaker 4: it was like Jordan taking off from the foul line
Speaker 4: and he and he just caught it. You know, it
Speaker 4: was like you met some of the greatest catching on TV.
Speaker 4: I saw the Dwayne Wise catch behind Burley in the
Speaker 4: perfect game for what was on the line there. That
Speaker 4: was amazing catch. And then the six n lcs Andy
Speaker 4: Chavez right next door at Shay State and cat this
Speaker 4: catch takes a back seat to no One, and you're right,
Speaker 4: it totally changed the momentum because if the Mets go
Speaker 4: back to the dugout and say, we just put two
Speaker 4: on Zach Wheeler, let's let's kick it in. Yeah, mentally,
Speaker 4: it has a big lift on that dugout, and conversely,
Speaker 4: it it's like a rain on the other doug when
Speaker 4: you take away that momentum. And that's what Derek Hill
Speaker 4: did there.
Speaker 2: I love the fact that, I mean, you don't see
Speaker 2: Zach Wheeler break out into a full smile too often,
Speaker 2: but he looked like a kid on Christmas morning that
Speaker 2: just got his Nintendo sixty four for Christmas. You know,
Speaker 2: he's like, oh my god, you don't see Zach Wheeler
Speaker 2: do that too much. And then Ruben, I was I
Speaker 2: was literally thinking of you in that moment because you're
Speaker 2: on the broadcast. Are you trying to like rein it
Speaker 2: in a little bit because I heard you kind of
Speaker 2: go like yeah.
Speaker 1: I said, oh my god.
Speaker 2: I said, oh my.
Speaker 3: He's as he's leaping and the ball's getting gloved, I
Speaker 3: am saying, and I'm I hate talking over t mac
Speaker 3: in certain situations, but I was so.
Speaker 1: Taken aback by the play. You know, I get impressed
Speaker 1: by this stuff. You see stuff you almost never see
Speaker 1: almost every single.
Speaker 3: Day right for him to be able to do that
Speaker 3: and to make that happen and to have me watch
Speaker 3: it live, I mean I was like, oh.
Speaker 1: My god, it was like awesome, Like, dude, that was insane.
Speaker 2: It was absolutely and.
Speaker 1: It's hard to rain.
Speaker 3: And I held back after that and let tom you know,
Speaker 3: do his thing and then and then you know, analyze
Speaker 3: it afterwards.
Speaker 1: But damn, that was awesome.
Speaker 4: And after the game, like, uh, Wheelers, like, you know,
Speaker 4: somebody's like, what did you say to him? The dog?
Speaker 4: He said, I said thank you, And again I'm a hugged.
Speaker 2: Very very wheel Ish. No doubt. That was Manco Manco
Speaker 2: best week. When you want the best of the best,
Speaker 2: you go to Manco.
Speaker 1: And get yourself a slice.
Speaker 2: Absolutely. Monster Energy is keeping the Phillies show going all
Speaker 2: season long. Unleash the Beast. Game Day isn't just about baseball.
Speaker 2: It's about bringing the energy wherever you are. Pick up
Speaker 2: a Monster Energy drink at your local retailer and fuel the.
Speaker 1: So got a camera issue, guys.
Speaker 2: You're good, You're good. So a couple of things. Phillies
Speaker 2: signed Tommy fam to a minor league deal. I guess
Speaker 2: trying to get some outfield depth. Do you guys have
Speaker 2: any thoughts on that? Is the Phillies kind of just,
Speaker 2: you know, looking to bring in somebody just in case
Speaker 2: something happens. I guess this is kind of where they are.
Speaker 4: Well. I still think they're looking right handed bat. It's
Speaker 4: kind of a tryout. He's already ran through two organizations
Speaker 4: this season. I'm not I don't have high expectations, but
Speaker 4: they're still looking to address things. They need to address
Speaker 4: things right now. The bullpen has kind of skyrocketed to
Speaker 4: my number one concern, though I have concerns about the
Speaker 4: drop off after three in the rotation as well. This
Speaker 4: team has flaws, but then again, all teams have flaws,
Speaker 4: so they probably have less than other teams. But to me,
Speaker 4: they have three pretty significant ones and the bullpen. On
Speaker 4: this trip. As giddy as this trip was, I saw
Speaker 4: a lot of things in the bullpen that that concerned me.
Speaker 4: They gotta get Calerabat, They got to get Cali back,
Speaker 4: and he's got to be dealing. They need another leverage
Speaker 4: on I totally agree with that.
Speaker 3: And is there And you know, I've had some Twitter
Speaker 3: wards with some people lately, or some ex wards with
Speaker 3: people about you know what the needs are and if
Speaker 3: you do, there's a ways to do it. If you
Speaker 3: do add a starting pitcher to this rotation, you can
Speaker 3: slide guys back into the bullpen, I like a Lozardo
Speaker 3: in the playoffs. And so it's something to think about.
Speaker 3: I mean, you have to be hyper focused right.
Speaker 1: Now on.
Speaker 3: Not just not about making the playoffs. This team's going
Speaker 3: to make the playoffs unless they have major breakdowns. They're
Speaker 3: making the playoffs. They have to think about, Okay, how
Speaker 3: do we win in the playoffs. And that's the thought
Speaker 3: process that has to happen to me.
Speaker 1: And if they address starting pitching and are able to
Speaker 1: slide Tolzardo or whatever arm you can back into the
Speaker 1: bullpen when you need it in the playoffs, then that's
Speaker 1: a thought process.
Speaker 3: Typically you do need four starters, but not all the
Speaker 3: time and so FORTI five. Yeah, do you do it
Speaker 3: by getting the Eraaldus Chapman's of the world or the
Speaker 3: Luke Weavers of the world or lose those types of players? Yeah,
Speaker 3: you can address it directly, but if you can't, then
Speaker 3: there's other ways to sort of get the job done.
Speaker 4: And they need innings in that rotation, you can't have
Speaker 4: Lozardo throwing thirty pitch fifth innings and leaving the game
Speaker 4: because you need him to get through the sixth. So
Speaker 4: your bullpen lines up and you're not trying to protect
Speaker 4: a two run lead in the sixth with really you know,
Speaker 4: you're kind of lower guys on the bullpen. You just
Speaker 4: you need it all goes together. You need innings from starters.
Speaker 4: But I do think they need another leverage guy.
Speaker 1: And then in the perfect world you get a starter
Speaker 1: and a reliever. But they're not going to get that.
Speaker 1: They're just not gonna get that. And I'll say, take
Speaker 1: on im, like another fifty million dollars in payroll. It's
Speaker 1: not happening.
Speaker 2: Our next last last Wednesday, we talked a lot of trades,
Speaker 2: threw a lot of names out there, and we're going
Speaker 2: to talk more trades in our next episode on whatever
Speaker 2: date is. It might be Wednesday, so and if so,
Speaker 2: if you are listening or watching and have any questions
Speaker 2: or want to float any trade names by us, feel
Speaker 2: free to do that. Maybe we'll tackle some of those
Speaker 2: names for you. The Phillies open a four game series
Speaker 2: on Monday night against those Pittsburgh Pirates. They're going to
Speaker 2: face some decent pitching this week, Braxton Ashcraft, who's pitched
Speaker 2: well for the Pirates this year. Six forty quite right,
Speaker 2: quite right, yes, crumb, Yeah, I'm facing Aaron Nola six
Speaker 2: on Monday, six forty. On Tuesday of Bubba Chandler against
Speaker 2: Christopher Sanchez sixty on Wednesday, A tune in tune in
Speaker 2: Paul Deans, Zach Wheeler, that's kind of a Zach Wheels wheeler,
Speaker 2: Jim Wheels Wheeler. And then twelve thirty five pm on Thursday,
Speaker 2: you have Jared Jones against Alan Aron.
Speaker 1: Hell.
Speaker 3: Oh, this is gonna be a great battle, man, because
Speaker 3: Pittsburgh's playing good, They've got great pitching. It's a great
Speaker 3: test for the offense as well.
Speaker 4: Yeah, you know the Phillies, their schedule here very favorable.
Speaker 4: I know the Pirates, you know they're scrappy and they're
Speaker 4: hovering around five hundred. But I think their next five
Speaker 4: series they play three last place teams. I mean, you're
Speaker 4: gonna go out and take it to them. You know,
Speaker 4: they got they they got Cincinnati in there, they got
Speaker 4: the Mets again after the break, and then the Kansas
Speaker 4: City is the last place team. So pretty favorable schedule.
Speaker 4: For the Phillies.
Speaker 3: August can make or break teams. Man, it's the it's
Speaker 3: the dog days and you gotta grind them out. We'll
Speaker 3: see how much they grind.
Speaker 2: Absolutely, we'll be back next to Jill. Don't forget. Don't
Speaker 2: forget to send us your trade questions if you have any,
Speaker 2: for our next episode. Until then, Jim.
Speaker 4: Boys, it was a lot of fun and I will
Speaker 4: smell you later.
Speaker 1: Smell you, James.
