Sweet Jesús! Luzardo, Harper, Mattingly, bullpen issues and more

The Phillies won another series, following Thursday night’s victory in Cincinnati.

Jesús Luzardo was brilliant, striking out 11 in seven scoreless innings. But you know what else was good? Jonathan Bowlan and Jhoan Duran in the final two. The Phillies need more depth in the bullpen, however, following José Alvarado’s and Tanner Banks’ latest meltdowns on Wednesday.

Bryce Harper is competing in the Home Run Derby. We expect Kyle Schwarber to be, too.

Plus, Don Mattingly said he’d like to remain as Phillies manager beyond this season. Will he?

Speaker 1: Hey, this is Bryce Harper and welcome to the Philly Show.

Speaker 1: Phillies win two out of three in Cincinnati. Rubin Tomorrow, Junior,

Speaker 1: Jim Salisbury, Todd's a lucky It's the Philly Show.

Speaker 2: I don't even know what date is, guys.

Speaker 1: It's Friday, though, final weekend before before the All Star break,

Speaker 1: and last night Thursday night. Billy win one to nothing.

Speaker 1: Jesus Lozardo looking like an All Star, Jowanderoya Jouandern looking

Speaker 1: like an All Star. He said, Oh yeah, Ruben, tell

Speaker 1: me more what you thought about Hayeseus.

Speaker 2: He was dealing. He was dealing.

Speaker 3: He had chip, a little chip on his shoulder too.

Speaker 3: He got a little chippy with the other opponents. I

Speaker 3: don't know what it was all about. You probably know

Speaker 3: it more, but it was nice to see him deal

Speaker 3: the way he did. I mean, his sweepers, outstanding change up,

Speaker 3: fastball command.

Speaker 2: Everything he wanted to see out of an All Star.

Speaker 2: You saw out of wizard on.

Speaker 3: It's one of the reasons why these Phillies are where

Speaker 3: they are today.

Speaker 1: Yeah, he said, real quick, Jim Lozardo. For those that

Speaker 1: don't know, after the second inning, he ends inning on

Speaker 1: a flyout, and then all of a sudden, he snaps

Speaker 1: his head over to the Reds dugout, starts pointing, starts

Speaker 1: walking over. He's talking back at him, and then the

Speaker 1: home plate umpire. I think it was Mike Easterbrook came

Speaker 1: over and said all let's let's not get too crazy,

Speaker 1: and Jesus calmed down, pitched brilliantly, and after the game

Speaker 1: I did ask him. I said, what was going on there?

Speaker 1: Somebody Chirpy's like, yeah, you just things got a little heated,

Speaker 1: a little competitive, And then I had my little Jim,

Speaker 1: you're in the back of my mind, I go care

Speaker 1: to share who it was? Basically he goes, uh, what

Speaker 1: was said was said in English, and I'll leave it

Speaker 1: at that.

Speaker 4: So it was fran Well, I don't know if.

Speaker 2: It was not francon let's start that it was.

Speaker 1: Yeah, it was not Francona, but that was.

Speaker 2: I'm gonna take your guess. It was South Stuart.

Speaker 5: It might have been. It might have been.

Speaker 2: I think he seems he seems.

Speaker 4: Like he's a little chippy, and they I was they

Speaker 4: might I didn't do any research on this. They might

Speaker 4: know each other because South Stewart heck of a plier.

Speaker 4: I think he's from that area of Florida. I think

Speaker 4: he's from that south.

Speaker 2: Well, then they may have had some beef so but

Speaker 2: I might be wrong.

Speaker 5: There's a little age difference.

Speaker 1: But this is just speculation. We're just having fun here, folks.

Speaker 5: This is just.

Speaker 4: As as Ryan Howard once said, who are these speculating speculators?

Speaker 5: But uh no, but I just was thinking of But

Speaker 5: I love that stuff.

Speaker 4: It's like around the bench, around the benches in an

Speaker 4: NHL game during the commercial breaks, it's it's all that stuff.

Speaker 5: I love it. And Lozardo's got a little bit of.

Speaker 4: He's got some quiet feistiness to him, some like you know,

Speaker 4: under the radar feistiness, you know, kind of mess with them.

Speaker 4: So wherever you can derive a little motivation from in

Speaker 4: pro sports, in the world of competition, it serves you well.

Speaker 4: And he had a hell of a road trip, two

Speaker 4: great ones, one in Kansas City, one in Cincinnati. And

Speaker 4: said it the other day Todd when we were in kc.

Speaker 4: Sometimes it's hard to believe he's only been throwing that

Speaker 4: sweeper for a season and a half, because he's mastered it,

Speaker 4: and it is nasty.

Speaker 1: It is nasty. He was fantastic. So then you know,

Speaker 1: Doron comes in, puts the first two runners on bass,

Speaker 1: Caleb Kaffin goes up to the mount, shuts them down.

Speaker 1: Game over, they win one nothing. But conversely, guys the

Speaker 1: previous night, you know all Ellen ron Hell goes out,

Speaker 1: gives up three runs of three and third innings, and honestly,

Speaker 1: like for that guy, I mean, he was fine. But

Speaker 1: then Tander Banks comes in, gives us three straight home runs.

Speaker 1: Joselle Loado comes in in the sixth inning, walks three guys,

Speaker 1: gives up four runs. Both of those guys that era

Speaker 1: is over seven. Banks is now on the injured list.

Speaker 1: But to me, that game on Wednesday night just kind

Speaker 1: of stressed what we've been talking about on the show

Speaker 1: for weeks, which is they need bullpen help. They need

Speaker 1: bullpen help because you can't pitch Bowlin and kirk Ring

Speaker 1: and Keller. I mean, Keller just came back, but you

Speaker 1: can't pitch them every game, and so that is a

Speaker 1: growing concern. It really kind of slapped me in the

Speaker 1: face when I was looking at those lefties struggle day night.

Speaker 3: Yeah, right now, the most reliable left hander in that

Speaker 3: bullpen is Tim Maso. Yeah, Tim Mason is actually throwing

Speaker 3: the ball really well. I mean I like the way

Speaker 3: he's uh, the way he's performed this year, and he's

Speaker 3: bounced back, he's healthy, he's done things that you know,

Speaker 3: the Phillies would hope he you know, he's bounced around

Speaker 3: a little bit, but he's he's had some success in

Speaker 3: the major leagues and he's throwing the ball well. I mean,

Speaker 3: you got you got to give him, you got to

Speaker 3: give him his props. I mean, this is a guy,

Speaker 3: uh that they may have to make put in a

Speaker 3: really much tougher situations. Dude's got a two point eight

Speaker 3: to one e r A at thirty six games, and uh,

Speaker 3: he's been reliable. He's been super durable. Eight walks, forty

Speaker 3: two strikeouts, he's only got a one point zero one whip. So,

Speaker 3: I mean he's done a really good job in his role. Now,

Speaker 3: he's been around long enough that he can probably pitch

Speaker 3: in some important and some difficult innings. But he hasn't

Speaker 3: been like a bona fide guy where you sit him,

Speaker 3: you know, slap him in the eighth inning or the

Speaker 3: seventh inning to get Juan Soto out, to get show,

Speaker 3: hey o Tani out necessarily. But right now he's like

Speaker 3: there one guy that they can probably rely on to

Speaker 3: maybe do that, and that's not a great sign.

Speaker 4: I do think this bullpen needs outside help. I think

Speaker 4: Dobraski needs to make a score there at the deadline,

Speaker 4: but I also think they need an X factor to

Speaker 4: step up from within. And this Jonathan Bollen, it's you know,

Speaker 4: there is a point in every successful reliever his career

Speaker 4: where it clicks, where you have that kind of Eureka click,

Speaker 4: And what we're seeing from him lately is a big bodied,

Speaker 4: big power armed guy that seems to be growing some confidence.

Speaker 4: He had a really good trip too. I mean he

Speaker 4: had struck out the side in the seventh in Kansas City.

Speaker 4: The last couple of nights he's been used in the

Speaker 4: eighth inning, gotten a hold both nights. I mean, his

Speaker 4: last six appearances, no runs, eleven k's and to just

Speaker 4: two walks. So whenever I think of a clicking for

Speaker 4: guys in the back of the bullpen, I think a

Speaker 4: Ryan Maddison in O eight, how it finally clicked for

Speaker 4: him and he was such a difference maker down the

Speaker 4: stretch and others. But you know, he was a real

Speaker 4: big difference maker getting the ball to ledge. If this

Speaker 4: balling guy can be an internal X factor, it's going

Speaker 4: to be a big boost for this club. He's done

Speaker 4: really well lately.

Speaker 1: Maddingly, Yeah, yeah, Maddingly was saying on Wednesday night, talking

Speaker 1: about all the lefty struggles because again banks Alvarado era

Speaker 1: over seven, they just optioned back as he's really struggled.

Speaker 1: He said that they are going to need to, you know,

Speaker 1: start thinking about not matching up lefty versus lefty, but

Speaker 1: just to find that righty that can get out lefties.

Speaker 1: And Maddingly did then say Thursday night after the game,

Speaker 1: Bowen's had some success against lefties, so I think he

Speaker 1: can maybe look to see him using some of those

Speaker 1: pockets and games there's some lefty coming up in the lineup,

Speaker 1: maybe you see Bowling he's he might be the guy

Speaker 1: that's deployed in those moments as opposed to maybe Alvarado,

Speaker 1: who's really struggling right now.

Speaker 3: So you look at he's his splits right now against lefties,

Speaker 3: two fifty batting average with a six thirty four OPS,

Speaker 3: which is it's okay. I'm not sure lately what those

Speaker 3: numbers have been because I haven't broken them down. But

Speaker 3: his lead pipe sinker and he's got a good quality

Speaker 3: hard slider.

Speaker 2: You know.

Speaker 3: Those two, Those two combos can you know, can get

Speaker 3: lefties out. It's just a matter of execution, right, And

Speaker 3: it looks like at the age of twenty nine, he's

Speaker 3: starting to understand and to start to execute. Sometimes it

Speaker 3: takes a while for certain guys to like believe in themselves.

Speaker 3: I mean, I remember Pat Gillick talking about this a

Speaker 3: lot like betteran guys. At some point it clicks for him,

Speaker 3: as you said, Jim, and their confidence gets to the

Speaker 3: point where, like, you know what, I'm not worried about

Speaker 3: the getting hit. I'm not worried about you know, Hillaric

Speaker 3: and Bradsby or Victus uh and and and so and

Speaker 3: and some guys I remember Tim Warrell in particular, was

Speaker 3: one of those guys, like he finally said to himself,

Speaker 3: you know what, I don't give a crap when this

Speaker 3: guy hits this ball somewhere. I'm just gonna execute my

Speaker 3: pitch and see what happens. And he became a pretty

Speaker 3: damn good closer for a while. I mean, this is

Speaker 3: a guy that didn't have unbelievable closure stuff. But he

Speaker 3: became like a good set up guy closed some games.

Speaker 3: And uh, and that's just an example of a guy,

Speaker 3: especially a guy with bowl and stuff and that, you know,

Speaker 3: and that arm. If he gains that confidence, you never know.

Speaker 4: Funny you said, I remember having conversations with Pat Killick

Speaker 4: about that stuff. He used to always say, you can't

Speaker 4: be afraid to be hit. You can't be afraid to

Speaker 4: get hit because you know you gotta challenge him.

Speaker 5: And he's right.

Speaker 4: I was thinking about this watching last night's game one

Speaker 4: nothing victory, right, Dave Debroski takes a lot of heat

Speaker 4: when you're in the big chair, you take a lot

Speaker 4: of heat for your moves.

Speaker 5: Some work, some don't. No, no GM back two thousand.

Speaker 4: But you know, three real big contributions in Thursday nights

Speaker 4: when from from three of his recent trades, his whus

Speaker 4: Wozardo great trade, Johan Duran great trade, and Jonathan Bolin

Speaker 4: putting it together here in the short term, small sample

Speaker 4: size needs to continue it. But if he continues it,

Speaker 4: you know, for Matt Strom, that could end up being

Speaker 4: a very good deal as well.

Speaker 1: Absolutely, what did you guys make of Alvarado? Alvarado struggles

Speaker 1: and I don't know if you guys saw what he said.

Speaker 1: After the game on Wednesday, he talked again about the

Speaker 1: velocity and he said, you know, I don't want to

Speaker 1: use as an excuse, but the ABS challenge system has

Speaker 1: been kind of an adjustments because I really have to

Speaker 1: go over the middle more again. To me, that sounds

Speaker 1: like a guy that's just searching and lacking a lot

Speaker 1: of confidence.

Speaker 3: But he's not able to throw that fastball and the

Speaker 3: inside part of the plate to right handers for strikes,

Speaker 3: and he's missing by like a ball with he's missing

Speaker 3: by a ball and a half width, and the hitters

Speaker 3: know it, and they've seen him enough to know that

Speaker 3: they can stay off that pitch and wait till he

Speaker 3: throws the ball over the.

Speaker 2: Plate, and so hey, he's going to have to go again.

Speaker 3: He's a confidence guy, and right now it doesn't look

Speaker 3: like he has his confidence.

Speaker 2: I hope at some point he can click for him,

Speaker 2: but at this point I can't rely on it.

Speaker 3: He's not can't be a reliable guy just because he

Speaker 3: hasn't been able to command his fastball enough to make,

Speaker 3: you know, the hitters think about it and to actually

Speaker 3: swing at the at the cutter that he throws in

Speaker 3: there too. So if you can't throw the fastball in

Speaker 3: their first strike, then they're just gonna spit on the

Speaker 3: cutter because it comes in, they know it's going to

Speaker 3: be a ball. It's another ball.

Speaker 4: Maybe, I mean, his movement is such it's been so

Speaker 4: dramatic over the years. Maybe just throw it right down

Speaker 4: the middle and let it happen.

Speaker 5: I don't know.

Speaker 1: Yeah, that's kind of what they wanted him to do

Speaker 1: a few years ago when he was walking right through

Speaker 1: it down the middle. Let the natural movement take over.

Speaker 1: But maddingly did point out, and I guess this is

Speaker 1: kind of what they're hoping it comes back. Their way

Speaker 1: is that he is the highest batting average of balls

Speaker 1: in play of any relief pitcher in Major League Baseball

Speaker 1: in the past fifty years. It's like a four fifty

Speaker 1: batting average on balls in play, which is absurdly high.

Speaker 1: So they're kind of hoping that that number comes back

Speaker 1: to more like Earth and maybe he'll get some luck

Speaker 1: that way.

Speaker 3: I don't know, you know what I think about predictability

Speaker 3: and changes, Todd, there's a reason why that balls it's

Speaker 3: four fifty it's getting hit pretty hard.

Speaker 5: Getting hit by people.

Speaker 2: It's getting hit by people.

Speaker 1: Hey, Phillies fans, listen up. When the players need elite

Speaker 1: orthopedic care, they turned to Rothman Orthopedics, and for good reason.

Speaker 1: back slash the Phillies Show to get access to VIP care.

Speaker 1: Today we're back and I got a monster moment. We

Speaker 1: need to have our monster moment. Here we go, let's

Speaker 1: do it. Monster Moment, of course, is powered by our

Speaker 1: friends at Monster Energy and my Monster Moment or I'm

Speaker 1: kind of getting a little ahead of myself, guys, because

Speaker 1: this monster moment might come on Monday. But but, but

Speaker 1: Bryce Harper is going to be competing in the home

Speaker 1: run derby, and I have a sneaky suspicion that it

Speaker 1: also might be Kyle Schwarber competing competing in the home

Speaker 1: run derby. But never a doubt, never a doubt, Never

Speaker 1: a doubt.

Speaker 2: Yeah, So, do you know who's thrown to him?

Speaker 1: Dino Eble's gonna be thrown to mister Bryce.

Speaker 2: You made that call there, Jimmy, you're on top of it, like, yes,

Speaker 2: wh white on Rice.

Speaker 4: Well, Harper's you know, he has a champagne taste and

Speaker 4: like he's not going to fog. Yeah, he's not going

Speaker 4: to fog to chaw after He's going to Barkley Prime.

Speaker 4: So but he's got champagne taste. And Dino Ebel is

Speaker 4: pretty much the best in the business when it comes

Speaker 4: to grooving it with a little a little firmness, and

Speaker 4: he's a great VP pitcher.

Speaker 5: I've seen his two sons play the last couple of summers.

Speaker 4: He's got two sons that are almost drafted like two

Speaker 4: years ago, one last year. Maybe good looking players, man,

Speaker 4: but uh, he's he's going to pitch to Harper and

Speaker 4: not surprised Harper went for the best.

Speaker 1: Well, And in a little backstory here go back to

Speaker 1: the All Star Game and just in twenty twenty five

Speaker 1: in Atlanta, that Phillies are the National League, American League

Speaker 1: are tied. They're having that tie breaking swing off. Dino

Speaker 1: Ebel throws to Kyle shwar Now, in that swing off,

Speaker 1: you get three swings and that's it. Three swings and

Speaker 1: you're done. So Dino Ebel goes up to Kyle Schwarber

Speaker 1: and he says, hey, Kyle, where do you want it.

Speaker 1: Kyle Schwarber says down the middle, please, sir, and Dino goes,

Speaker 1: I got you. Dino Ebel threw three pitches down the middle,

Speaker 1: right where Schwarber wanted him, three straight home runs. National

Speaker 1: League wins the All Star Game, Kyle Schwarber wins the

Speaker 1: All Star Game MVP Award, And that Jim and Rubin

Speaker 1: kind of answers what Bryce Harper was concerned about the

Speaker 1: other day on Sunday, Jim, when we were talking to

Speaker 1: him in Kansas City, he says, it's one thing because

Speaker 1: he Bryce had said that he had some teammates, former

Speaker 1: teammates offer their services and he's like, now, Listen, that's

Speaker 1: one thing to be throwing batting practice to your high

Speaker 1: school team or a college team. It's another thing to

Speaker 1: be doing it in front of one hundred million people

Speaker 1: watching on TV. In the Home Run Derby. He's like,

Speaker 1: I want to know the guy that's gonna be thrown

Speaker 1: to me on Monday night can do it under the

Speaker 1: bright lights and Dino Evil can do that.

Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, And he wants to look good.

Speaker 4: He wants to win it, as he said Sunday, but

Speaker 4: you know he's going to come out there looking like

Speaker 4: a walking billboard. All his sponsors are going to be,

Speaker 4: you know, loving this, and this is a this is

Speaker 4: a competition's business opportunity, and he needs to have strikes.

Speaker 5: And so he's like, he's you know, he went for

Speaker 5: the best.

Speaker 1: And we can expect Kyle Schwarber to almost certainly be

Speaker 1: named to the Home Run Derby or announcing the Home

Speaker 1: Run Derby in the coming days or hours.

Speaker 2: Who knows.

Speaker 1: I mean, Don Manningly certainly suggested that he's going to

Speaker 1: be doing it.

Speaker 2: On Thursday.

Speaker 1: But I mean that that's really kind of like the

Speaker 1: worst kept secret in the world. I feel like everyone.

Speaker 1: Of course, alesh Warber to be participating in the home

Speaker 1: Run derby, but that that'll be a lot of fun.

Speaker 1: No update yet, or I mean, no word yet if

Speaker 1: there's any movement on Zach Wheeler being named to the

Speaker 1: All Star team. We talked about him, of course earlier

Speaker 1: this week. Zach has made himself available to pitch, has

Speaker 1: announced that he is available to pitch. And then I

Speaker 1: talked with Caleb Cotham, the Phillies pitching of course coach

Speaker 1: of course, the other day and he.

Speaker 2: Said that.

Speaker 1: I don't I can't. I can't pinpoint any specific risk

Speaker 1: to Zach pitching on Tuesday if he wants to pitch

Speaker 1: after pitching on Sunday series finale against Detroit.

Speaker 2: So I wanted to mention that so be fun though,

Speaker 2: no doubt.

Speaker 3: I mean, I'm looking forward to it. I would assume

Speaker 3: that you guys will all be there. I will be

Speaker 3: there with my with my kids and excited to see

Speaker 3: all of the activities.

Speaker 2: Yes going on differently, All Star Game.

Speaker 3: eight hundred gambler.

Speaker 1: All right, we're back, Don Mattingly. The Phillies played on

Speaker 1: ESPN on Wednesday night when they got kind of when

Speaker 1: they got clobbered, and before the game, Don was sitting

Speaker 1: in the dugout with the ESPN's Buster Onlybuster on. He said,

Speaker 1: would you like to manage next season if given the opportunity?

Speaker 1: And Don said yes, if David offered me the job,

Speaker 1: I would be more than happy to accept managed beyond

Speaker 1: this season, he'd I think he was kind of asked

Speaker 1: something similar a couple of weeks ago and wasn't as forthcoming.

Speaker 1: So we followed up with him on Thursday and he said, yeah,

Speaker 1: I've enjoyed it. I would like to manage again. I

Speaker 1: signed a two year contract. I'm already under contract working

Speaker 1: for the Phillies. I'm already managing, So if Dave wants

Speaker 1: me to manage, I'd be more than happy to do it.

Speaker 1: My question, guys, is, as it stands today, what do

Speaker 1: you think is going to happen? Is Alex Alex Corr

Speaker 1: is back there somewhere right now. He's in the bushes.

Speaker 2: He's lurking, waiting for the bidding war.

Speaker 5: I ain't getting in a bidding war. Are you win?

Speaker 5: The division.

Speaker 4: Don Maddingly, it's your job, but this is a it's

Speaker 4: way too premature because where this franchise is, and the

Speaker 4: importance in twenty twenty six in delivering this season before

Speaker 4: you get too old, before the game maybe shuts down

Speaker 4: next year. Who the hell knows what's happened. Worry about

Speaker 4: this year. But if you deliver, man, I want you

Speaker 4: at the Helm next year too.

Speaker 2: What about you?

Speaker 1: What do you think, Rubin?

Speaker 2: Same thing.

Speaker 3: I mean, I've made mistakes with managerial moves. I've made

Speaker 3: the right decisions on some are managerial moves. I think

Speaker 3: the best thing to do is to wait until the

Speaker 3: end of the season and go from there. And I

Speaker 3: think that's probably what Dave Dombrowski will do. There's no rush.

Speaker 3: I really don't think that there is. And I got

Speaker 3: to believe that he's got a bird in hand when

Speaker 3: it comes to Maddingly, and he can decide what he

Speaker 3: wants to do moving forward at the end of the season,

Speaker 3: when the last pitch is made.

Speaker 4: Right, organizational focus has to be on the now, on

Speaker 4: the big league roster and delivering this October. That has

Speaker 4: to be your complete organizational focus. Nothing else.

Speaker 1: Yeah, last time in twenty twenty two when Rob Thompson

Speaker 1: became inter your manager, he made the playoffs, didn win

Speaker 1: the division that year, of course, made the playoffs, and

Speaker 1: that's when right before Game one of the NLDS, Jim,

Speaker 1: I think you might have broken that story as I

Speaker 1: recall that.

Speaker 4: It was during the playoffs, like a different circumstance that

Speaker 4: was like, you know, kind of a more abund team

Speaker 4: that rose from the dead and exceeded expectations and had,

Speaker 4: you know, makes the playoffs for the first time in

Speaker 4: ten years. There were a lot of reasons that it

Speaker 4: felt like the right time and the right decision, and

Speaker 4: I think Manningly has done a heck of a job

Speaker 4: bringing this team together. I still think the players turned

Speaker 4: it around, but I still think the shock of the transaction,

Speaker 4: the firing, they installing him Don had a lot to

Speaker 4: do with waking up the lads. And they got Zach

Speaker 4: Wheeler back, and to me, that's the number one reason

Speaker 4: that this team took off. That everything, everything fed and

Speaker 4: has fed off Wheeler's return. But nonetheless, Maddingly has done

Speaker 4: a very good job. He's an impressive guy. He's a

Speaker 4: lot like Rob, very even keeled, but I like a

Speaker 4: lot of the things that come out of his mouth.

Speaker 4: He doesn't he doesn't bury guys, but he doesn't sugarcoat

Speaker 4: things either. He's very comfortable in his own skin.

Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree, he's He is pretty honest, I would say,

Speaker 1: but not in a blowing up your team's confidence, you know,

Speaker 1: rattling the cages too much. But yeah, he doesn't take

Speaker 1: too much bs. And again I think that that goes

Speaker 1: way back to the New York days where you know,

Speaker 1: he was there were fires every other minute with Billy

Speaker 1: Martin and all these guys getting fired every every five seconds.

Speaker 4: So if you want to get a good look at

Speaker 4: some of the stuff he experienced in New York, he

Speaker 4: should read Mike Viccaro's book.

Speaker 5: It's been out a couple of months, Bosses of the Bronx.

Speaker 4: It's been a lot written on the on the Bronx

Speaker 4: zoo in the book was the Bronx so but on

Speaker 4: the Steinberner years. But Vacara does a great job kind

Speaker 4: of bringing it all together, and Don's in there.

Speaker 5: Quite a bit.

Speaker 1: Oh really, it's good.

Speaker 4: Oh yeah, it's you know, his observations and just living

Speaker 4: through it and things that happened, and it's just a

Speaker 4: very interesting little it's interesting read.

Speaker 5: It's a great, great book.

Speaker 2: Yeah.

Speaker 1: I mean, he's funny, he is fun to talk to.

Speaker 1: He'll tell some cool anecdotes about his playing career and whatnot.

Speaker 1: Even just yesterday, even just on Thursday, talking to Jose

Speaker 1: talking about Jose Alvrott on the ABS Challenge System asked

Speaker 1: him about that. He said, well, it's definitely it's definitely

Speaker 1: more challenging now these days for pictures because it really

Speaker 1: has benefited hitters. And he said, you know, maynah, back

Speaker 1: in the day, you know, you had to have a

Speaker 1: relationship with the empire, so you would talk about how

Speaker 1: there might be a pitch just just off the plate.

Speaker 1: And he kind of looked back, did the Empire go,

Speaker 1: was that just off? Or was that so that was

Speaker 1: just on? Huh? And then he would the next pitch

Speaker 1: will come a little bit off of that. He's like, no,

Speaker 1: I know that's not on. You know, you would kind

Speaker 1: of talk to the catcher, the umpire and you have

Speaker 1: to like work people during the game.

Speaker 5: I love that stuff. I love that stuff. You can't

Speaker 5: do that anymore because they're all robots.

Speaker 1: Right, he said that. He's like, it is not as

Speaker 1: much chatting. He's like, he said, he said, I don't

Speaker 1: know how in the world you could get ejected these days,

Speaker 1: there's no possible way you can get ejected.

Speaker 5: How do you even get ejected?

Speaker 1: And then we all kind of looked at each other, like,

Speaker 1: have you seen Bobby Diggison this past week?

Speaker 2: Guy's got.

Speaker 1: Bobby's gotten run twice.

Speaker 4: So so lads, lads, they got to bring up a topic.

Speaker 4: Here Don Mattingley's former team, the Miami Marlins. Have you

Speaker 4: seen what they have done? Twenty wins? Twenty wins in

Speaker 4: June six and two here in the month of July,

Speaker 4: tied with the Fight in Phillies for second in the East.

Speaker 4: Nobody's even talking about them.

Speaker 3: They are.

Speaker 4: They are on a roll, and they are great at

Speaker 4: home in the mausoleum in Little Havana and the Phillies

Speaker 4: go there at the end of the month.

Speaker 5: All of a sudden, I'm like, oh, it might be

Speaker 5: a fun series.

Speaker 3: Oh it's gonna be a great series. I'm excited about it.

Speaker 3: I mean, there's, uh, you know, there's a whole lot

Speaker 3: of things you could talk about, Gabe, you know, being

Speaker 3: the GM and some of the moves that have been

Speaker 3: made and the analytics and the sort of the craziness

Speaker 3: of you seen in baseball that some of us old

Speaker 3: school guys think is silly. But the reality of it is,

Speaker 3: these guys are playing. They got good young tellent, and

Speaker 3: they've got they've got some arms that are coming along.

Speaker 3: They've made a whole bunch of roster moves back and forth,

Speaker 3: moving guys up and down all over the joint. Uh,

Speaker 3: they are expecting excellence and uh they're doing a great

Speaker 3: job down there. Man, it's gonna be nice little race

Speaker 3: with Atlanta sort of trying to steady the ship here.

Speaker 3: It's gonna be It's not it's no longer a two

Speaker 3: team race, my friends, or one one team race that

Speaker 3: is now a three team race.

Speaker 2: It's gonna be exciting all the way through September, I think.

Speaker 3: Yeah.

Speaker 1: I mean you think about just a few months ago,

Speaker 1: everybody's talking about whereas one of them, where will the

Speaker 1: Marlins trade Sandia Contra?

Speaker 2: Yeah, that ain't happening. They might be buyers, Yeah, they

Speaker 2: might be buyers.

Speaker 3: They got some they got some talent down there, so

Speaker 3: you never know. They made some big trades that brought

Speaker 3: some very good quality players. Think there's a whole lot

Speaker 3: of homegrown guys on their on their ball club.

Speaker 2: But they've plucked some guys in Rule five.

Speaker 3: They've you know, they've taken some guys off waivers, they've

Speaker 3: made trades, They've done a bunch of different things to

Speaker 3: uh to bring a pretty damn good team to the

Speaker 3: major leagues. And with the mediocrity of most teams in

Speaker 3: the league, they've eating up on them.

Speaker 2: Yeah, makes it more fun.

Speaker 1: Fits from time to time, as we know. So, uh,

Speaker 1: Phillies open up a three game series Friday night in Detroit. Pitching.

Speaker 5: Uh, it's gonna be Aaron Nolan today.

Speaker 1: Christopher Sanchez on Saturday, of course, Zach Wheeler on Sunday.

Speaker 1: Maybe something will happen the next few days and maybe

Speaker 1: we'll find out that Zach Wheeler did get named to

Speaker 1: the All Star team, since he said he's willing to pitch,

Speaker 1: and the Phillies have said at least Don Mannuly Kale

Speaker 1: Cothain that they are okay with it.

Speaker 2: So Philly really.

Speaker 3: Interesting to see mister Kevin McGonagall, Philly boy, who has

Speaker 3: had a phenomenal year and likely going to be the

Speaker 3: Rookie of the Year and will be at the All

Speaker 3: Star Game, which is a great story in and of itself.

Speaker 3: Really fun to see that transpire over the next four days.

Speaker 3: Pretty cool moment for McGonagall who's now facing the team

Speaker 3: that he grew up, you know, cheering for and loving

Speaker 3: and now he's going to try to do some damage

Speaker 3: against them. And man, he is pretty damn good player. Man.

Speaker 2: He started off in spring training and has not stopped.

Speaker 4: You know, you're right, he had to make that team

Speaker 4: and he went on was their best player spring training,

Speaker 4: has been their best player. I got to think on

Speaker 4: Sunday afternoon, he's actually going to be on the Phillies

Speaker 4: team plane coming back to Philly. They do that as

Speaker 4: a professional professional coursey all the time, so I would

Speaker 4: think he'll be on the plane they can look and say, oh,

Speaker 4: we could have drafted you.

Speaker 2: Exactly right, exactly right.

Speaker 5: That's a lot of carbs.

Speaker 2: I'm going multiple pies.

Speaker 3: I'm taking them home, freezing them half Bay half the
