Ep 73: X-Men '97 S1E1 "To Me, My X-Men"
Travis is on deck to lead the season of television currently being discussed, and he has chosen the Disney+ reboot of the X-Men animated series, X-Men '97. Naturally, they start with episode one, "To Me, My X-Men."
[SPEAKER_01]: hey welcome to small screen sessions this is a tv show podcast where we get together and talk about you guessed it tv shows i am Travis i am joined with my compatriots my my my teammates even Steve and Amanda how you both doing hello i will
[SPEAKER_00]: Are we both part of your super hero group?
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I don't know how many heroic we are, but we're pretty super.
[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: Are we on blue team or yellow team?
[SPEAKER_01]: Blue or gold?
[SPEAKER_01]: I think of blue team.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm wearing a blue cardigan right now.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I guess that makes me blue team.
[SPEAKER_01]: You're wearing a blue t-shirt or blue shirt?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Amanda, I don't know, you're on the sidelines over there.
[SPEAKER_00]: I hope the on the gold team I got us if you guys are both on the blue team.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I want to be on the same team.
[SPEAKER_00]: Is this like practice where?
[SPEAKER_00]: No, these are like team plays against each other.
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's go do missions.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, maybe basketball for instance.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like when you're when you're at practice, you have your split into two and you practice against each other.
[SPEAKER_00]: But otherwise, I would like to be on the same team.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, speaking of teams, the team that we're giving it into is the X-Men team today.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's my turn to pick the new season of television that we're doing.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm going back to 2024, I think it is, to
[SPEAKER_01]: dive into a reboot it's kind of technically season i think five of the of the original animated series and maybe season six i didn't check i should have all right i think six yeah maybe six and but it's it's a it's a it's a recoil i don't think you needed to see the original series a man i guess you'll be the the test on that because you did not see the original series is that correct
[SPEAKER_00]: correct.
[SPEAKER_00]: I have not seen the original series.
[SPEAKER_00]: I've seen some films.
[SPEAKER_00]: I've seen some movies, some X-Men movies.
[SPEAKER_00]: The titles was a little confusing X-Men 97, but it came out in 2024 because it's a continuation of a 90s cartoon.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's got the costume fee, you know, for the before it, so you know, signaling this taking place in the year of our Lord 1990 and seven.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so we'll get into the first episode of that here in a little bit, but Amanda you're on trivia I am on trivia and we're gonna We're in a time travel skin into our boop boop boop hot tub time machine I guess okay and go back to 1997 I love it like set the stage of What's out in the world what's the world like in 1997 when we're redoing what was the pop culture
[SPEAKER_00]: that's the trivia for today.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm into it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: So this first question, 1997 was a tough year for Elton John.
[SPEAKER_00]: He lost two close friends.
[SPEAKER_00]: One was shot outside their own home in Miami in July.
[SPEAKER_00]: The other died in a car accident in August.
[SPEAKER_00]: Who's Elton John's friends?
[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm talking about name one of them.
[SPEAKER_01]: Fun trivia.
[SPEAKER_01]: What happened to the second one?
[SPEAKER_00]: They died in a car accident in August.
[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, but wasn't very to open.
[SPEAKER_01]: Was it Princess Dye?
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, Princess Dye.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is the person that died in a car accident in August.
[SPEAKER_00]: And his good friend that was shot outside their own home in Miami and July was Gianni Versace.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Which Princess Dye came to that funeral and then she died herself a couple of months later.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, there was just a lot.
[SPEAKER_00]: There was a lot of press.
[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of talk about these events in 97.
[SPEAKER_00]: All right, number two, a weird British children show premiered and became very popular.
[SPEAKER_00]: One of the characters was later accused by Jerry Falwell of being a gay role model.
[SPEAKER_01]: Teller Tubby's.
[SPEAKER_00]: Teletovies is correct.
[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
[SPEAKER_00]: Do you know the name of the allegedly gay role model?
[SPEAKER_01]: Could you give us the four, and we could pick the four, what's one it was?
[SPEAKER_00]: Ha ha ha ha ha I didn't actually have the four in front of me.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I don't know.
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, one of them's po-la-la.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yankee, Blinky, Dopey, Sneeleo.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, okay, the four characters are, yeah, okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: Lala, Po, Dipsy, and Tinky Winky.
[SPEAKER_01]: I believe it's Tinky Winky Winky.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Tinky Winky is the purple one.
[SPEAKER_00]: Tinky Winky sometimes carried like a bag that was like this magic bag.
[SPEAKER_00]: And part of the gay complaint was that this was like a woman's purse, like a handbag.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh no, not so good.
[SPEAKER_00]: Gosh, you can't have that.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that reminds me of that sign fall episode is that the European men's carry-off.
[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, I can't read a man bag of 90s or at least every day.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so I always remember this because we had the Japanese exchange student live with our family for some of the time.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then she came back to visit.
[SPEAKER_00]: And she would say, Tinky Winky has purse.
[SPEAKER_00]: And she was so confused about what is this?
[SPEAKER_00]: Like they're saying he's gay.
[SPEAKER_00]: Tinky Winky has purse.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is the big news that made over there.
[SPEAKER_01]: Tinky Winky has a purse.
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, the gay purse scandal was a couple years later.
[SPEAKER_01]: Wait, did they hear about Obama's suit?
[SPEAKER_00]: Damn it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Damn it.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, number three, this actor was on the cover of People Magazine's Sexiest Manalive for 1997.
[SPEAKER_00]: He starred in that year in a hugely popular medical drama and at the same time, a critically plant-panned superhero movie.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, Batman and Robin's version wasn't fondly looked upon, also, for him.
[SPEAKER_03]: That was the one where you get the nipples to it, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, or no.
[SPEAKER_01]: On the costume.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think so.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it was, I think both of them have nipples, I think.
[SPEAKER_01]: Can you book me?
[SPEAKER_00]: Have to go back.
[SPEAKER_00]: Check the tape for nipples.
[SPEAKER_03]: I have some asked to Bruce.
[SPEAKER_03]: Can you milk me?
[SPEAKER_03]: I'd rather not.
[SPEAKER_00]: a different animated TV show premiered in 1997 and became arguably one of the most controversial things on television.
[SPEAKER_00]: People were just a little shocked watching what we're supposed to be characters of children swearing so much.
[SPEAKER_00]: Do you say it?
[SPEAKER_00]: South Park?
[SPEAKER_01]: South Park?
[SPEAKER_01]: South Park?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: All right, and last one, four intact ears entered a boxing ring and only three intact ears exited the boxing ring.
[SPEAKER_01]: Mike Tyson and was a Vander Holy Vander Holy Holy old.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: So that was the heavyweight championship boxing circus of 1997. Who could forget that?
[SPEAKER_03]: Is that actually what did he his whole ass was out Then he would bite it What what was he doing with his ass out pornography to an interview he was sitting there in his jackstraps So like there's just a jack on that place then he yeah, they turned around and left the interview and they kept the camera on them and there's his whole ass
[SPEAKER_00]: is this in preparation for the new boxing match that's going to happen this year?
[SPEAKER_03]: The boxing year, the boxing year you haven't.
[SPEAKER_03]: You fought some fucking playmaster youtuber.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, there's like four years younger.
[SPEAKER_00]: He's still around.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's a lot of different years man is still around.
[SPEAKER_01]: Both his years fully
[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, you know, a couple bonus things about 1997, um, Spice Girls were huge.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was the whole thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: What else?
[SPEAKER_00]: We were in high school.
[SPEAKER_01]: If I could make the cricket noise, I'd make the cricket noise.
[SPEAKER_00]: Just trying to think of what else was Tomagatchi's apparently a popular little pocket, little pocket, electronic pets.
[SPEAKER_04]: Sure.
[SPEAKER_04]: All right.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's about it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you could contribute with things you remember about 1997 or you don't remember that you're very well.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, there was a lot of acid.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, you take so, yes, you don't remember that you're very well.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, that was that was my senior year.
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, um, uh, can't hardly wait.
[SPEAKER_01]: Was that 97 or 98?
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
[SPEAKER_01]: Dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, X-Men 97, speaking of 97, was rebooted by Bo Demayo in 2024.
[SPEAKER_01]: I guess he was able to successfully pitch this idea to the people over Disney plus that he would be an ideal show runner for this show.
[SPEAKER_01]: The X-Men have always been about civil rights and about racial justice and gay rights and that kind of stuff and as a gay man of color, he was able to bring his unique perspective to this reboot and then was fired.
[SPEAKER_01]: After the success of this first season, this first season was extremely well received.
[SPEAKER_01]: He was fired within days of it coming out.
[SPEAKER_01]: something to do with maybe he wasn't very nice or something.
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe he was because he had an only fans.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's really hard to tell.
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe, you know, he alleges that there was some prejudice.
[SPEAKER_01]: It seems like, but the second season is coming soon and that will still be all stuff written by him or largely written by him and led by him.
[SPEAKER_01]: And we'll see what's to come after that.
[SPEAKER_01]: But this season is basically bow to my O's season, his resurrection of the X-Men.
[SPEAKER_01]: Starting with episode one to me, my X-Men.
[SPEAKER_01]: So did you watch this when it came out?
[SPEAKER_01]: Steve, were you live going along with it, or?
[SPEAKER_03]: I didn't even, I didn't even know it, it happened.
[SPEAKER_03]: And then, well, I was,
[SPEAKER_03]: uh... tune around uh... looking for some sort of watch on uh... plex with my brother and that was a way what is it so i see ninety seven at that i don't think there was i think the show went to ninety seven and he's like oh no that's the new one i'm like oh shit that's why i was right now i was i think i saw the last year okay yeah i was i was on top of that was pretty excited all right so
[SPEAKER_01]: Starts off with what we get a slightly updated version, I think, of the X-Men animated series theme song and all of its thumping, nostalgic triumphant glory.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_01]: So this classic one, the best all-time intros.
[SPEAKER_01]: Some of the intros of the individual characters are the same.
[SPEAKER_01]: We get some newer characters or get some, maybe not newer characters, but characters get new focus, such as morph.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he gets a new moment in the titles with a laughing, silhouetted, this or sinister.
[SPEAKER_01]: But it ends the same as a classic animated series did, but two sides of ideologically opposed mutants, crashing and centrist screen led by their respective old white dudes.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I should say, Steve, you really raised the bar last round that was yours.
[SPEAKER_01]: I felt like I should probably type out my shit too.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I typed out my shit this time.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, wow.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm trying to read my chicken scratch and come up with,
[SPEAKER_01]: stuff off the top by head.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, all right.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
[SPEAKER_01]: So the episode starts in New York shitty the 1997 pre-gentrified version with a storefront TV blaring exposition.
[SPEAKER_01]: Professor Axis dead killed by NSA agent Henry Geirick.
[SPEAKER_01]: Now Amanda, that's, that's, do you want context from the original series?
[SPEAKER_01]: If you want to watch this as, like, with a fresh eye.
[SPEAKER_00]: I did read a tiny bit that basically said, like he professor ex was, quote-unquote, killed, but he wasn't actually.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like I don't know who's supposed to know it so maybe you can fill this in, but that he was like taking space to be here or something like that and then this is a year later now this is like a year after that happened so that's all I know well that's that's pretty much all you need to know Okay, there's all kinds of other adventures in the first Arizona series, but the only thing that really stands out that you kind of need to know is that right there where you just said
[SPEAKER_00]: And this is, this is owned by, this is Marvel Studios as owned by Disney.
[SPEAKER_00]: So all of the movies were not.
[SPEAKER_01]: So those were those were 20 sensory facts owned by Sony.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: And now Disney bought Fox.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: There you go.
[SPEAKER_00]: Coming up.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if Ox was old by Sony.
[SPEAKER_01]: I kicked that back.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure if I was right about there or not.
[SPEAKER_01]: But it was Sony.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, Sony owns the Century Fox.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, 20 Century Fox owned.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because so our boy Stan Lee came out to Hollywood like in the mid 80s, I think, maybe early 80s with the intent of like, OK, I got to save Marvel by selling these characters and making, you know, having big movie properties made about them because like, you know, this will help the comics.
[SPEAKER_01]: And he couldn't get anyone to buy
[SPEAKER_01]: all the characters and masks.
[SPEAKER_01]: So he started selling mom cheese meal.
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's how we end up with a situation.
[SPEAKER_01]: We have these different studios that still own the rights because so long as they produce a feature like every 20 years or something like that.
[SPEAKER_00]: They get to keep it.
[SPEAKER_01]: They get to keep it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I remember that being very confusing when Marvel started making a whole bunch of stuff.
[SPEAKER_00]: But then like Spider-Man was still over with Sony.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the X-Men were still with Sony.
[SPEAKER_01]: And Sony's around talking up with their terrible cinematic
[SPEAKER_00]: And that made, like, the places where they may be able to come together, ummm, messy and confusing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, okay, so coming into this with only some of those movies in mind, I was surprised by the vibe of some of the characters.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Rogue is very different, you know, as I remember, and a pack of, and a pack of like kind of shy, and then now we've got this like, this woman that's like a southern waitress, which is way more accurate.
[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously the show is going to be a good comic accurate than the movie.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's, that's, that's the rogue
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, that's, you know, in the one that held on to was a Carol Danvers for for a little bit too long and picked up her powers for life.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's that's our road.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it wasn't just that the, I mean, now she has, like, super hard scan and super strange thing and fly and like the in a pack and wrote couldn't do any issues.
[SPEAKER_03]: She could do his dream people's fucking.
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, it's like we're used to powers.
[SPEAKER_00]: In those beginning movies, she was playing quite young, I think, too.
[SPEAKER_00]: She was kind of like a junior.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like a junior.
[SPEAKER_01]: But she was a member.
[SPEAKER_01]: She was rogue.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'd say in name.
[SPEAKER_01]: And some of the powers only.
[SPEAKER_01]: That was okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: That was okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, she was okay job, but it wasn't the rogue that we know.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is, this is the rogue that I know and it's even though it's in, like.
[SPEAKER_00]: comment because I really it was a surprise but I really liked I really liked her kind of no nonsense sassy southern self.
[SPEAKER_00]: Good.
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll get into her.
[SPEAKER_01]: As we learned that professor action's dead we see a young kid nap mutant who identifies himself later as Roberto de Casta
[SPEAKER_01]: He's being led into an abandoned warehouse by some goons Roberto who savvy Marvel heads will recognize from the comics as Steve what's his name?
[SPEAKER_03]: I was gonna ask you if he clocked him immediately with like I did or a sun spot, but that sun spot
[SPEAKER_01]: What do you like so you guys I'm good all right?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, we do like because like so Because sun spot.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't remember him being in the original animated series But he was always wasn't right.
[SPEAKER_01]: He wasn't but he was an animal but he was a X-Men character So it's like, oh, okay, they brought him out for this cool
[SPEAKER_01]: So I think it was X-Force.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think you started on X-Force.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that's where I became familiar with in many ways.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you knew what his powers were going to be right away, because you recognized the name.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Go on, shall.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'm not sure if I recognize the name, but I recognize, okay, he's a mutant and he's rich, and he's Latino, it's a sunspot.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, then like, oh, that's his name.
[SPEAKER_01]: I forgot in a bit of a while.
[SPEAKER_01]: So he has a collar around his neck that glows pink and since we are not idiots, we can infer this collar is why son spot is not using his powers but the dialogue fills us in just in case.
[SPEAKER_03]: We sent it to the Grinotian angle break to the exact, it's the inhibitor collar, and did you catch the the more locks cameo.
[SPEAKER_03]: So like we're seeing there's set in the scene for 97 at the very beginning, it's like future comms, pages and more.
[SPEAKER_03]: His majors are the future communications.
[SPEAKER_03]: And then
[SPEAKER_03]: Then the more locks like venture up to the surface, it was like the the more lock queen or whatever with the iPad and they're taking a look at crazy as he's a CRT TV sets and VCR's is that what's going on down there.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I saw people kind of right around, but I just I just was reading it as like here's shitty New York of like the you know that before Giuliani came in and saved everything just kidding.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's funny, there are more locks.
[SPEAKER_01]: Nice, nice Easter egg there.
[SPEAKER_01]: So we see from banners that this group is called the FOA, which will learn later means the friends of humanity.
[SPEAKER_01]: And they are trafficking me.
[SPEAKER_03]: Okay, I use the proud boys, the three percent of your old gamers.
[SPEAKER_01]: What?
[SPEAKER_01]: They are trafficking me.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm so glad you're.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm so glad you're saying that because of a later shot, where I was like,
[SPEAKER_00]: I think they did that on purpose or am I like reading too much into it but you guys are setting it up to like no, I wasn't reading too much into it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: I believe the show is qualifies as woke AF, um, so.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, so they're tracking, they're trafficking units to be used by some wealthy buyer as target practice Goons in the background are like soldering things Roberto And you're packing up roller blades?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they selling roller blades on the side.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, it's weird Roberto defense himself is he's just born this way like I can't help it.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was just born this way this falls on deaf ears From scar face effo waste guy before the room gets suddenly chilly Storm yeah
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I love, like, so they got some of the original voice actors back and I can't remember if she's one of them.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, that was over the top.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Alison Seely Smith is one of the few that came back.
[SPEAKER_03]: So awesome.
[SPEAKER_03]: Like the over the top theatrical voice.
[SPEAKER_03]: And then like she comes in with the fucking mohawk from the comics and the earlier comics.
[SPEAKER_03]: Like it's so fucking tight, dude.
[SPEAKER_03]: It is.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she comes in, she announces herself with a self-seriousness that we love her for.
[SPEAKER_01]: And the Goons fire their weird arm guns at her as bitch-up, voiced by Isaac Robinson Smith, comes to her aid.
[SPEAKER_01]: That we start with two black X-Men, duking it out with a nearly all-white militia engaged in domestic terrorism, as I'm sure, totally incidental.
[SPEAKER_01]: But things don't go the way that you necessarily expect.
[SPEAKER_01]: The dirt bags miraculously take out our hero is one of whom is in a mega level mutant who has been understandably worship as a goddess.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, okay, she shows up and she's immediately taken out of these fucking bozos with a surprise explosion and they brace themselves for more X-Men.
[SPEAKER_01]: Scott summer and oh, let's go ahead.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, it's good.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's what this one Cyclops blows in and Do I have to say no he makes his his big injuries.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, let's let's hear yours whether he blows him like cool like man
[SPEAKER_01]: He blows it like a really nice cool dude man.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, oh, hey, yeah, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's a good guy.
[SPEAKER_01]: Hi, how'm the good guy?
[SPEAKER_01]: We blow through a board.
[SPEAKER_01]: And announce to himself as definitely a good guy, voiced by Ray Chase.
[SPEAKER_01]: He uses his power to fight the FOH.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's just by shooting them with his optic blasts, but by using them to blasts to make him skate around the room like he's a dazzler or something.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's great.
[SPEAKER_01]: I love it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Never seen it.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's like the concussion blast, they're making sure you know that it's not a fucking laser beam.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's a good point.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's not going to cut through stuff unless it's a Sentinel later.
[SPEAKER_01]: So the FOH utilize it speaking of Sentinel is a utilize a Sentinel hand.
[SPEAKER_01]: What's they used to take out Scott, but foolishly remove his goggles that act as governor
[SPEAKER_03]: I surrender, not, not again placing this in 97, that was even probably done by 97, right?
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, I think it even was doing not.
[SPEAKER_01]: For Scott, some of us that would be even more perfect for the Fed than it's true.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's just very delayed, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: He's the kind of guy that had like the gold stitching and his really blue blue jeans, so.
[SPEAKER_01]: Meanwhile, back at the X-Mansion, Scott and his shades recounts the tale of the unusually well-armed and lucky friends of humanity to Gambit.
[SPEAKER_01]: Gambit, whose real name is Remy Lobo, is voiced by AJ Lakashio, and is making Benez in half-shirt.
[SPEAKER_00]: Just so who's this guy?
[SPEAKER_00]: He wasn't in the movies?
[SPEAKER_01]: So did you not see that pool in Wolverine?
[SPEAKER_01]: He's finally made it into that movie.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's also an ex-man origins Wolverine, which is terrible, but the character is in it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't see those, but I just became very interested in this character.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, he's a fan favorite.
[SPEAKER_01]: Am I right Steve?
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, he's kind of like cool.
[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, Mr.
[SPEAKER_00]: Cool, but then he's making and frying being used like being from your needs of all the time.
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, he's squirting some like fucking abs.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I'm gutter.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're saying, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: But he's saying like he's gumbo would have been more appropriate because he's all about, uh, he's just all about New Orleans.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, that's his thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's that's Benier's all the way.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's well, that's the character all the way is what I'm saying like that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay cool.
[SPEAKER_01]: Very defining Yes, he's very he's got the Creole accent.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's very like that's a defining character is to come in Yeah, and he seems like
[SPEAKER_00]: A little wild, a little like Rockin' Rollin' A little, yeah, like, that seems to be his personality, it was like, oh my gosh, this character's cool, I like him I didn't want to go back and say, I have no idea who this bishop character is, I don't know, this character bishop
[SPEAKER_01]: So one of my personal favorite characters, I like him better without the mallet, but either way, I like him.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's a time-traveling mutant from the future that came back to redirect the paths so that things would not end with a sentence.
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's look over the world, basically, and killed all mutants, and this saved him.
[SPEAKER_01]: other remainder remaining mutants, but in order to do that, he was unable to go back home, so he's remained as part of the X-Men team.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, uh, or we have, uh, they're still making breakfast and whatnot, rogue blows in with some folks, he witnesses them in a southern draw, voiced by Lenore Zan.
[SPEAKER_01]: Scott explains that it is their duty to carry the torts for Professor X when Morph disguised as a casually sonterine that is walking Professor X arrives.
[SPEAKER_01]: He is always by JP Carlyac who is notably a non-binary actor, just as Morph is a non-binary superhero.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I think he's worth mentioning.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that's cool.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, this part confused me.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, wait.
[SPEAKER_00]: So Professor X really isn't dead?
[SPEAKER_00]: I was confused.
[SPEAKER_00]: This character is also really interesting.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, who's this guy, girl, person being?
[SPEAKER_01]: Warf is someone that was in the comics, but definitely became a bigger thing on the cartoon on the animated series, but not as big of a thing as they made him back into for the 97.
[SPEAKER_01]: They've made him more of a physical thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: He was kind of in and out before, but he's a lot more important now.
[SPEAKER_03]: And I think when I read the comics originally, all he could do is shape shit.
[SPEAKER_03]: Like he didn't get the powers of whoever he turned into.
[SPEAKER_03]: And then yeah, then I remember just like other versions later on, I think, where he would get like somewhat like some of their power by changing into them.
[SPEAKER_03]: I feel like he went like head-to-head with Wolverine, like Wolverine, just claw through his claws with no problem, but like if he clawed someone else, it would work.
[SPEAKER_01]: That, yeah, kind of like how we see a mystique work, basically.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just going to ask them, like, this sounds like mystique.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's some similarities there that can't be telling.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's not.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, a, yeah, a pregnant gene gray voiced by Jennifer Hale, then shows up and uses her telekinetic powers to audioist one of gambit's kinetically charged playing cards that was to headed towards her man's face.
[SPEAKER_01]: through Robert de Costa waking up from recovering the underground base of the mansion and we meet the very blue Hank McCoy, my personal favorite X-Men, better known as Beast.
[SPEAKER_01]: Beast is as he was on the original series voiced by actor George Boosa who made a cameo appearance in the 2000 live action film X-Men.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just fun.
[SPEAKER_01]: He played a tractor.
[SPEAKER_01]: Jubilee is there.
[SPEAKER_01]: Also, we meet Jubilation Lee, but I know in his Jubilee, she's voiced by Holly Chow, Roberto wants to leave.
[SPEAKER_01]: He even offers to pay the X man off for helping him, but they want information and the inform him that his life may be in danger should he leave.
[SPEAKER_01]: Jubilee puts him in his place when he protests, but when he agrees to stay and ask for something to do, she pops a gun and looks like he's ready to show him a thing or two.
[SPEAKER_00]: yeah um this is like horny x-men i guess so well so what you're also starting to get is it x-men have always been horny and uh it's a soap opera x-men's as fucking soap opera okay let's let you know now uh okay awesome really really like it's a soap opera because i was surprised it's like oh they're really laying it on like
[SPEAKER_00]: get it from the get-go.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, she's pregnant with boring Scott and they're calling it out is like Scott, ooh, Scott's boring but Wolverine bad boys over here and then Jubilee's clearly interested in Mr.
[SPEAKER_00]: Hot Stuff.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then we've got a lot of gold and New Orleans guy flirting it up.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, I mean they are, but I get the feeling of like the swing or something like they're like they're like they're poly or They're not exclusive.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's always a fair each other
[SPEAKER_00]: I get this feeling that they're not exclusive.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're just like, when they're both not attached, especially they're together.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, they're each others back up.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I know.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think like that.
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll get more of them, no worries.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love more.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I'm interested.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, I'm glad that you're interested.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is the sweet, you know, is Steve gonna hate Ted last so moment.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's Amanda gonna hate X bin 97, you know?
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: So meanwhile, Magneto, Magneto, excuse me,
[SPEAKER_01]: He's a magnet, all right, let me try that again, even though we're not editing anymore.
[SPEAKER_01]: Maggier, what's funny is that like magneto actually makes more sense, but no, it's pronounced magneto.
[SPEAKER_01]: So meanwhile magneto, the X-Men's the most prominent foe voiced by Matthew Waterson is the Amhering on about a new age for mutants, but isn't real.
[SPEAKER_01]: Roberto was in the Danes' room where the X-Men train using advanced holographic simulations, and he soon learns to take it very seriously.
[SPEAKER_01]: Jubilee is talking to him via Intercom when Roberto talks to what's trash for Wolverine's liking.
[SPEAKER_01]: Wolverine, a Logan voiced by Cal Dodd as he was in the original animated series, Pins' Roberto down and let's have no that he's a non-pholographic threat, Bob.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: And then Jubilee ends up calling him a bozo over scared of Sunspot.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: So don't scare off this boy that I like.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: Back in Professor X's office, Val Cooper communicates with Gene and Scott live via satellite while she gets her steps in.
[SPEAKER_01]: She is a government liaison for the X-Men and explains to them that the sentinels are all destroyed, and that Bolivar, not Oliver, Bolivar trash, have really struggled with that.
[SPEAKER_01]: I always thought my whole life was Oliver trash, but now I'm like, oh, there's a B in there.
[SPEAKER_03]: Which is weird, like Simone Bolivar, like Bolivar in revolutions, right?
[SPEAKER_03]: Sorry, off of the colonial Spain, and then like disguise exactly the opposite of that.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, things weird, calm Oliver.
[SPEAKER_01]: pronounce it just like body baller instead of yeah body body body of ours what you should do right uh but he's definitely not like out this this is that from South America I don't think yeah anyways so we learn that he is missing he's the sentinel's creator and he's gone missing cyclops makes it clear that he expects more of her and hangs up
[SPEAKER_01]: Gene observes that Professor X's death certificate is on the desk, while Scott limits the lack of discipline in the other X-Men, who jointly play basketball outside.
[SPEAKER_01]: You're not disciplined.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's true.
[SPEAKER_01]: At least for Scott's perspective.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so he's like the Captain America of the X-Men 100 percent is what this okay That's what this feels like and we're not for beast.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's always he's always been probably my second favorite everyone else Those Wolverine I love Wolverine too, but I I think Cyclops gets a gets a bum rep
[SPEAKER_01]: Even though this is our boy.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is Cyclop.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's he's a bit of a stick in the mud.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's a bit of a you know, but like he's but he's he's the one that's focused so to speak In a group dynamic You need that one.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he's to lean hard to get done if you will
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: So Jean proposes leaving the X-Men to raise their child to Scott to dismay.
[SPEAKER_01]: She makes it convincing, convincing case, but it's interrupted by a basketball doubling and it's an allegory that crashes through the window and knocks down a portrait of the original X-Men team posing with Professor X, which is a classic image from Marvel, but they've added more fan, which is fun.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_00]: her speech was a lot.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that was high pressure.
[SPEAKER_00]: She was really pouring out a lot on him like oh wow, I was surprised.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't know what you know about Jean Gray, but you've seen the movie, so you know, she has mine powers.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's telekinetic, it also telepathic, which means that she knows her man's mind inside and out and probably knows all the exact right things to say to him to pull
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so, oh, this makes much more sense.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think she was just kind of, yeah, she seems stressed.
[SPEAKER_01]: She doesn't like opposite.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's not like manipulating the whole of the strings as it's here.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't mean it that, but like she doesn't know how to phrase things.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is a bit manipulative because he's feeling stressed about being the leader.
[SPEAKER_00]: So she's like, well, yeah, let's go, let's just go.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: That helps.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: We learned that Logan has scared Roberto off the bozo possibly placing him in danger.
[SPEAKER_01]: Scott tries to shame the exponent into compliance causing the usual friction between himself and Logan.
[SPEAKER_01]: What's yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is usual friction.
[SPEAKER_01]: These two always at at loggerheads.
[SPEAKER_01]: Loggerheads.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: The X-Men use Wolverine's nose to sniff out Roberto's a scent trail to an underground rave.
[SPEAKER_01]: They spread out to find him, but also kind of have a drink or two in relax.
[SPEAKER_01]: Remi and Rose, they're amazing.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's just, let's check our time doing this, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's have fun.
[SPEAKER_00]: The kids there, the X-Men are there, but they're going to hang out, and then later the bag guys also come there.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's like this is the only hangout in town.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like everybody comes there.
[SPEAKER_03]: Cartoon said, you can mix business and pleasure.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're very all very comfortable with it.
[SPEAKER_01]: More, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more
[SPEAKER_00]: But then they hold hands and it looks like his, he doesn't have gloves on some of his fingers.
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's partly why they're together is because of his power, the way that he can genetically charge things, he can kind of like act like counter, like send her energy without losing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because they don't explain.
[SPEAKER_00]: his powers, like his powers are not explicitly explained.
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, if you watch the end of the episode, they actually had a little thing, you would explain to all of their all of their powers.
[SPEAKER_01]: And there's like, yeah, like post credits.
[SPEAKER_01]: During the credits, there's like a whole thing where it breaks down their individual powers and stuff.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna go back and watch that because I even squirt like it came up and then it was um, it was doing the thing where I wanted to play the next episode.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I was like, no, no.
[SPEAKER_00]: But then I was trying to scroll through to see if there was any scenes in the credits.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I guess I was going too fast.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I'll go back and watch that.
[SPEAKER_03]: And that part's very Windows 97 with the clicking, like the old style cursor and then yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: Bring you up a video and then the stats pop up.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay cool.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna go I will definitely check that out
[SPEAKER_01]: More turns into Gene Gray to tease Wolverine, but Wolverine informs that he has put two and two together that Gene and Scott are going to be leaving the team.
[SPEAKER_01]: The Friends of Humanity arrive as Jubilee and Roberto dance while she shoots off her finger fireworks and chat about their powers.
[SPEAKER_01]: Wolverine strolls up and let's decost to know that they just save his life again while Rogue shows off her super strength and crosses one of the Friends of Humanity arm gun
[SPEAKER_03]: You fucking loves it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Reverto.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Storm and Cyclops.
[SPEAKER_01]: Go to talk to Guyric and prison while Bishop watches through two way glass.
[SPEAKER_01]: Guyric informs the X-Men that he has little desire to help them as he views that is helping to destroy the human race and he brags about killing professor X.
[SPEAKER_01]: But Jean is using cerebral back at the X-Matchin, which she explains allows her to enter his mind from a distance and starts digging around, but immediately exclaim something is wrong and someone else is there.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then we see her in costume with a baby in her arms with master mold.
[SPEAKER_01]: The main Sentinel, who builds and controls the rest of the sentence, and he appears in her vision, he is all about death and Jean takes off her helmet, and leaves Gyeri's mind to inform the X-Matchin that Tras gets to be found and he has to be stopped.
[SPEAKER_01]: Masterful of this online.
[SPEAKER_00]: This scene where they're talking to the creepy guy and his glasses reflected storm when he said something about like, we got to kill animals.
[SPEAKER_00]: Or something like that where it was like, I'm like, that's on purpose, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: He's telling her specifically because she's a black woman.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: Which is fine.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: Still.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's this disturbing scene with her, and then she's like, oh, I'm not pregnant, and then there's a baby crying, and then there's a cradle, and then she's holding a baby.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, anybody that's had a baby?
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, that was just so scary.
[SPEAKER_00]: So they're going to say Steve.
[SPEAKER_03]: just that it's it's not only just for kids but also like other satires and parodies and allegories go over the heads of these eighty bigots because they're so fucking stupid oh yeah so like the these are the people that are the side of the property right yeah they're trying something got woke it's yeah yeah exactly
[SPEAKER_03]: I thought homelander was to hero in boys.
[SPEAKER_01]: Rage with the machine.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, exactly.
[SPEAKER_01]: The X-Men go to find Trask and they're all aboard the Black Bird, also called the X-Jet because that's their thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: Just put X in front of it.
[SPEAKER_01]: When a sentinel attacks was supposed to be all begun, the team is separated in the sky.
[SPEAKER_01]: Storm saves Gambit, morph turns into an arc angel, another one of my personal favorites.
[SPEAKER_01]: To save Wolverine, while Rogue catches Bishop and Beast.
[SPEAKER_01]: Cyclops saves himself, because he's a fucking badass, blasting his way to a slow fall.
[SPEAKER_03]: when he lands, and doing this superhero land.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and when he lands, he says, to me, my X-Men, quoting Professor Axon, say the signaling that he's growing more comfortable with leading the team.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Trash.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he said at the moment of stress, which means that's like muscle memory at that point.
[SPEAKER_00]: You got it down.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: He might be overthinking things when he's not fighting.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, but at home, and they're able to class with their personalities when they're working together, they're ready to work together.
[SPEAKER_01]: They thrive in combat.
[SPEAKER_01]: Trask is found next to Master Mold, who is under construction, but still able to produce some kind of shoddy look and sentitols on be things.
[SPEAKER_01]: We get our rock and theme song and the X-Men go about kicking the asses of these subpar sentitols.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's go so far as to take one over their bodies over and convert it into
[SPEAKER_03]: I love that.
[SPEAKER_03]: Rachel, I love that and then like the Omega level threat storm detected and she fucking lightings the sand skate to create glass and then invokes a tornado to elevate and freeze and then shred the robots.
[SPEAKER_03]: Give them the forecast.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's one of the things I really like about this episode is that we see multiple instances of the mutants fighting in ways that we've never seen them fighting before, not in the X-Men animated series, not in comics because it hasn't been in movement and not in the TV shows either, like we've never seen Cyclops move like that with his stuff and ever seen, you know, jump out of a fucking airplane and be able to use his eyes like that, his optic charges,
[SPEAKER_01]: with storm turning fucking sand into glass and weaponize your head.
[SPEAKER_01]: Awesome, a lot of fun.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and we've never seen Wolverine and Gambit work together.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're Gambit charges Wolverine's fucking blades and then sends him it towards Morph.
[SPEAKER_01]: who turns into the blob at the last second, so he can bounce off his belly to go take off.
[SPEAKER_01]: Master Moles had, Master Moles gets off his ass, and then gets put back on his ass, cause Wolverine blows his head up.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, it's a reinventing of the old fastball, especially except this guy with a combination of three, and instead of getting thrown, he just uses blob as a crampalick.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is what they're working on when they're out there playing basketball.
[SPEAKER_00]: What is what they're working on?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Scott, it's team building stuff for sure.
[SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, Val Cooper arrives with the military to clean things up and make things official, as well as arrest a bitchy and in complaining trash.
[SPEAKER_03]: Um, she thinks it's regressive reactionary conservative trash.
[SPEAKER_03]: with the ironic first name.
[SPEAKER_01]: She says that the humanity owes, you know, the ex-man of debt, and he says, transquite rather humans and mutants go to war than work together.
[SPEAKER_01]: We all win when men like him fail.
[SPEAKER_01]: She says that he sounds like Charles Xavier, and he notes that the team was what worked together to save the day.
[SPEAKER_00]: And she even say that the professor X would be proud or something like that, yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: back this to me seemed a lot like a like a post game interview to me like Cyclops Crudding is teammates.
[SPEAKER_03]: First of all, I'd like to take my Lord Saviour and Sabanour, one god y'all, also shout out to the Archangel Ward and I couldn't have done any of this without my teammates, a strong sugar lady, Lord Shredder, laser eyes, blue and high-to-science guy,
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm a spinal cord child's y'all.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a spinal cord child's y'all.
[SPEAKER_01]: You shouldn't make out.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it also makes sense because like I said, it's like legit amazing what the X-Men have done.
[SPEAKER_01]: So they're not just like some visual any group out there.
[SPEAKER_01]: You got the government.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, we're going to debrief you now and make it all official.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because we want to keep you on our side because
[SPEAKER_01]: We recognize that, you know, we want you to be our pet heroes because we don't want you sighting what the enemy because you could fuck us all up if you wanted to.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's like the X-Men version of shield.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, basically.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I kind of get sick of that story line that keeps coming up of like, oh, now the government is against the superheroes too much power or like they did something wrong that we don't like and we're scared of them.
[SPEAKER_00]: So now we're going to villainize them and then they have to do things under the radar.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I just think that and I get frustrated.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, and it frustrates me.
[SPEAKER_00]: So now to see this where she's, you know, the representative, I guess, of the government.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just thankful and grateful and wants to work as a team.
[SPEAKER_00]: I like it.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it makes sense.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, especially if we're having a functioning X-Men that have been around for years and doing their thing, there had to be some sort of equilibrium reached.
[SPEAKER_01]: So back at Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, Roberto and Jubilee make their goodbyes, even as Jubilee tries to convince him to stay.
[SPEAKER_01]: He seems tempted by the idea of a found family, one that accepts him as a mutant that he is.
[SPEAKER_01]: She realizes that he's hiding his solar energy power from his family and he explains that he's ashamed of his mutant abilities.
[SPEAKER_01]: He gives her his card while mentioning that he is single and leaves.
[SPEAKER_03]: Very scary, Simo.
[SPEAKER_03]: Throw money at the problem.
[SPEAKER_00]: I really liked when he finally, it basically comes out to her.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, it's him.
[SPEAKER_00]: So what I want to like, yeah, so it's exactly what this is.
[SPEAKER_00]: But there's a shot where it shows like his jacket that he talked about.
[SPEAKER_00]: He wanted because it was it costs a lot of money.
[SPEAKER_00]: but the way the light from his powers went over the kind of Chevron lines of his jacket looked like a beautiful sunset and I was like, ah, like because of his powers being solar looked really nice.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was into that.
[SPEAKER_01]: They both have light powers, so that's kind of cool too.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: The X-Men are back on the court.
[SPEAKER_01]: This time with Scott ready to play some beatball and wearing their appropriate clothing for it.
[SPEAKER_01]: and Jean's ready to referee also in uniform.
[SPEAKER_01]: Scott sort of apologizes to the team for being a fussy baby earlier in the episode.
[SPEAKER_01]: And says he has an announcement.
[SPEAKER_01]: Logan guesses that Scott and Jean are leaving the X-Men to raise their child and Jean says that they are not, Jubilee asks who would even leave the X-Men if they did leave.
[SPEAKER_01]: But before anyone can answer, there's an intruder alarm and Xavier's office and the X-Men rush in to find Max Eisenhardt, aka Eric Lenzert, aka Magneto, using these magnetic powers to clean up the place and put the original X-Men portrait back on the wall.
[SPEAKER_01]: He reads Professor X's last-will-investment and gives it the Cyclops explaining that the Professor had left everything to him, including the X-Men team itself.
[SPEAKER_03]: roll credits.
[SPEAKER_03]: And we here we see, uh, magneto without the helmet because Xavier's gone.
[SPEAKER_03]: He doesn't need it.
[SPEAKER_03]: So he's going to fucking full on Witcher mode.
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, he's like, like, good girl.
[SPEAKER_00]: Fabio.
[SPEAKER_00]: Just all.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: He is a silver fox Fabio with that hair.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, what?
[SPEAKER_00]: Excuse me.
[SPEAKER_01]: Does that make sense?
[SPEAKER_01]: Does that make sense?
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, with him knowing everything about Jean Grey and her powers?
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe not.
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe he doesn't think that she's as powerful as, yeah, I think that's it.
[SPEAKER_01]: So there's some hubris there, I guess.
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe he thinks that, I don't know, it's a little iffy to me that he would do that, but it is nice to see him without his helmet.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it does, I think you're right, Steve.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like him celebrating basically Charles's dead.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: He's like, all your babysitter belong to us, my ex-men.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: So that is the first episode of this series.
[SPEAKER_01]: How you feel about it, Amanda?
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm most curious about you since you never really watched this before.
[SPEAKER_00]: I like it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I like the characters.
[SPEAKER_00]: I like how much they're already showing us about the characters.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's the key point.
[SPEAKER_01]: It was like, and this has always been a character driven thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: And if you are losing that and focusing on the plot and their how or is your fucking up, got to focus on the character.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like more, I didn't know I don't know anything about more.
[SPEAKER_00]: So when then when you said, this is like a like a non-binary actor.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was picking up on that and I was like, that's cool.
[SPEAKER_00]: So that fits exactly about storm is this like powerful.
[SPEAKER_00]: but like calm, like calm, relaxed, so full of power.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's just the sassy southern waitress with the, like, you know,
[SPEAKER_00]: up for anything rock and roll guy, of course.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then what you said about Jubilee and the sun guy having both have light powers, but like if his is the sun it's during the day, but a lot of hers are like at night because it's fireworks show up at night.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I like that there's all this cute relationship-y stuff and the soap operas off obviously like the action sequencer cool like you guys are talking about or seeing things.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, obviously, I don't know what's new as far as I've never read the comics or anything, but I enjoy it, it's cool, it's cool to look at, it's fun.
[SPEAKER_01]: To be honest, I haven't read the comics since I was like 15, 14 years old.
[SPEAKER_01]: At this point, I know most from the movies and I guess some of the cartoons stuff.
[SPEAKER_01]: read up like what's going on in the X-Men world right now that I'm not reading out this fucking like you know read some reasons stuff so you don't have to follow all that shit right you know the characters so you're yeah I mean I thought that this in the animated series I mean I saw some episodes here and there um and I you know seeing the first handful of movies I don't think I
[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, it was great.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, yeah, I like the characters.
[SPEAKER_00]: I like the story.
[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, I like we're going to battle again some white supremacists like come into that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Any kind of that.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's great.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is a woke AF show.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm there.
[SPEAKER_01]: Steve, how do you feel with your revisit the first episode for the first time?
[SPEAKER_03]: So I remember being really distracted at the first time by the very pink lacrimal caruncles, like the pink parts of your eye, like closest to your nose, the corners.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: But then I think I realized in this first episode, they're doing that to indicate different shots.
[SPEAKER_03]: So like there's like the medium close up and then the close close up.
[SPEAKER_03]: And when they do the close close up, they're pink and when they do the medium close up, they're not necessarily.
[SPEAKER_03]: So I think it was designed to show,
[SPEAKER_03]: like an actual camera distance, like it's a directorial move, it seems like to me.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's so specific.
[SPEAKER_00]: Wait, well, but I, that's what, when things like that happen, if I can make it make sense with intention, then I'm like, okay, and it's not distracting in a bad way.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: If there's intention behind it, like, oh, it's not a mistake.
[SPEAKER_00]: I can feel better about it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Even if it might not be something that I like, but if there's intention, it makes a big difference.
[SPEAKER_03]: And when they have cyclops's visor off and he just opens his eyes and blows out the entire building.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's got to be good for all the teammates.
[SPEAKER_03]: They're still in there.
[SPEAKER_03]: And then this newspaper comes floating down and I paused it.
[SPEAKER_03]: And it was like the daily view goal.
[SPEAKER_03]: And it was like page 10.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's Spider-Man of Mutant.
[SPEAKER_03]: Hellfire.
[SPEAKER_03]: Hellfire Gala.
[SPEAKER_03]: And then the first page of it was an ad for a fucking Marvel merch partner disguised as a news story, so if you go look it up, it's just fucking
[SPEAKER_03]: by our shit.
[SPEAKER_00]: Wait, are you talking about the beneton fashion show?
[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Wait, so beneton has a partnership with Marvel for like, yeah, clothing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, fucking hilarious.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, my god.
[SPEAKER_00]: Beneton is a clothing line.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I did rewind it to see the front of that.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I saw it was like Beneton had an all-mute and fashion show.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so to me, I'm like, oh, it's signaling that there's acceptance of mutants on certain levels in like what's cool or culture.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what it was doing.
[SPEAKER_01]: It was also selling shit.
[SPEAKER_00]: But that's, that's hilarious.
[SPEAKER_00]: But it's on as an ally of X-Men.
[SPEAKER_00]: I go by their chest.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's like, like, place, you know, commercial placement in film and TV, and that kind of stuff.
[SPEAKER_01]: So that's a touchy funny thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: You want there to be products that are believable, but if it's something that you recognize, it kind of pulls you out.
[SPEAKER_01]: But if it's some fake bullshit product, you're like, that's the real, and it pulls you out.
[SPEAKER_00]: I thought it was really cool because in 97, Beneton was huge.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like they were huge, so it fit perfectly to have that be the company.
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's the best way to do product placement is to have it actually make logical sense within what you're watching and then to have it be a blip that you got to pause it to catch it, at least in that other down my throat.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so I'd say for product placement, yeah, it was that was five out of five, no notes.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think that was good.
[SPEAKER_03]: This is an American psycho where they had trouble getting brand partners for it because they're like, oh, this is about a serial killer, no things.
[SPEAKER_03]: But he's right to the ass to like rich people stuff.
[SPEAKER_03]: So we got to get some rich people stuff in here with like fucking brands on it.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's the tough road to ho there.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, so we'll be digging in the next nine episodes of the show over the next nine weeks or so.
[SPEAKER_01]: So stay with us, especially if you're watching it, it'll be easier to not have to blow through the whole thing at once.
[SPEAKER_01]: Email us.
[SPEAKER_01]: You can email us at small screen sessions at gmail.com and you could rate and review the show.
[SPEAKER_01]: Do you guys have anything else that we want to save to the people's?
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think so.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, keep in touch.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let us know your feelings about and show.
[SPEAKER_00]: Have you seen it?
[SPEAKER_00]: Are you going to play along with us?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: Tell us what I actually figured she had.
[SPEAKER_01]: uh... or tell us your favorite x-man you know you know it's fun we'll take a shit getting ready with us all right by everybody
