Ep 74: X-Men '97 S1E2 "Mutant Liberation Begins"
Travis continues to lead the gang into the first season of the Disney+ animated series X-Men '97, even as he drops the ball on trivia. Steve and Amanda are understanding. They talk episode 2, "Mutant Liberation Begins."
[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, welcome to Small Screen Sessions.
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm Travis.
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm joined by Amanda and Steve.
[SPEAKER_03]: We're here to talk about TV shows today.
[SPEAKER_03]: Let's up y'all.
[SPEAKER_03]: Sub-sup party timers?
[SPEAKER_05]: Party timers?
[SPEAKER_03]: What?
[SPEAKER_03]: Tarty.
[SPEAKER_05]: Party timers.
[SPEAKER_03]: Staying up late at 8.42 on a Thursday evening.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's late for me.
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, fall asleep in the couch.
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, oh, no, we're going to push it back another 15 minutes.
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm dying here.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's what you got down yet.
[SPEAKER_05]: You get up so fucking early.
[SPEAKER_05]: You responded to a text at like 530 in the morning and I'm like, what the fuck?
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like before that.
[SPEAKER_05]: I figured you're up before that because you have to get up early.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, the life of a teacher.
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_05]: Meanwhile, I'm over here.
[SPEAKER_05]: Our whole household, we're just all night owls and yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, moment of fear.
[SPEAKER_03]: Was it my turn for trivia?
[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_03]: Skipping that day.
[SPEAKER_03]: Sorry, skipping trivia today, skipping trivia didn't occur to me.
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm sorry.
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm going to skip for just completely drop out of my mind until this moment just to spell.
[SPEAKER_05]: I didn't check with you because last time I know I had it.
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, I'm not going to say anything this week.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's getting to be the end of the school year.
[SPEAKER_03]: I am like, uh, I'm afraid on every edge.
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm afraid.
[SPEAKER_03]: So it's definitely right.
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not afraid.
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not afraid.
[SPEAKER_03]: Just afraid.
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm afraid.
[SPEAKER_03]: You ate.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_05]: Well,
[SPEAKER_05]: We can chat about other things, or chat about.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's fine to find you guys are going to be okay, right?
[SPEAKER_03]: So you know what's complaining?
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, no, we're totally fine.
[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, Dutchen, we got Dutchen here.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: Luckily, we got lots of emails.
[SPEAKER_03]: No, we don't have any emails.
[SPEAKER_03]: We just can't.
[SPEAKER_03]: No, no, no, no.
[SPEAKER_03]: So I guess with all that in mind, I will just leave into what we're here for.
[SPEAKER_03]: So yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, let's go do it.
[SPEAKER_03]: Sorry, unless Amanda, do you have some trivia going to just come up with us at the top of your head?
[SPEAKER_03]: Is that what's happening?
[SPEAKER_05]: See, like you want to say?
[SPEAKER_05]: No, I don't think so.
[SPEAKER_05]: I don't think so, just I watched that episode like an hour and a half ago.
[SPEAKER_05]: And I did not want to then.
[SPEAKER_05]: I wanted to immediately go to the next one because it's a good sign either the things that that you would said last week about It being so pop-up or just echoing in my hands.
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, well, let's go.
[SPEAKER_05]: I love this.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's on Good good Well the episode is called up, you know, it's episode two and it's called mutin liberation begins And you know, we start with our regular amp intro
[SPEAKER_03]: and you are not allowed to skip this intro.
[SPEAKER_03]: I think of all the intros for any show I've ever seen in my life, this is the most essential to the experience of viewing the episode.
[SPEAKER_03]: So, I've watched it.
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, it's time.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is a trope by fucking love.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, restarting the opening title cards to update the audience with like what's happening in the show.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, we got...
[SPEAKER_00]: Man need a replacing professor x is top bill mutant and then you see storm best kesteo the more locks with like Darth moles double laser silver And then we get a dark Phoenix cameo and then like the SR 71 blackbird launches from asteroid M. It's fucking awesome
[SPEAKER_03]: yeah it's it's pretty cool and even if you're not digging that deeply into it if it's just even it's just the music and like hey look there's some heroes running around it's still just like yeah this putting me in the mode i remember one like a couple years ago is watching the original animated series and accidentally hit skip intro i started that motherfucker over like no now i'm gonna do this right and i lost it from the beginning
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, it's a Pavlovian response, you're like, okay, I'm in the zone now.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm good five years of Saturday mornings.
[SPEAKER_00]: Don't care if it's a repeat.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's like that's how he start my day.
[SPEAKER_03]: So we get into the episode, and F.C.
[SPEAKER_03]: News has an exposition dump for us again.
[SPEAKER_03]: We see a kid stuck on a ferris wheel being saved by a firewoman, or she's trying to save him.
[SPEAKER_03]: But things go south, and when this ferris wheel is crashing, Magneto of all people comes in to save the day, much to everyone's surprise.
[SPEAKER_00]: Do you think he allowed the yellow Sony Walk been sporked to fall because his powers would have degust the magnetic tape within the cassette?
[SPEAKER_03]: He wouldn't want to f-uck up that copy of Hall of Notes or whatever, like here.
[SPEAKER_03]: Scott and Jean discussed the professor's shocking decision to leave everything, even the X-Men to their nemesis magneto, Scott, understandably, is trying to come to terms that his mentor apparently trusted their enemy more than him.
[SPEAKER_03]: While Jean for her part is ready to see the bright side or twist things to her advantage, and she points out that the professors' choice may have been to free the two of them from the X-Men once and for all.
[SPEAKER_03]: The news goes on, and we hear that Magneto had attempted to start a mutant revolution last year, as soon as Charles XAvier was out of the picture, as a member of the anti-mutant terrorist organization,
[SPEAKER_03]: F.o.
[SPEAKER_03]: you know, the friends of humanity fuses with this advanced sentinel weaponry.
[SPEAKER_03]: We'll see more of it later.
[SPEAKER_03]: Underground?
[SPEAKER_03]: Amanda, you got something for us?
[SPEAKER_05]: Uh, it just that it looked like Gene was in the same shirt.
[SPEAKER_03]: Do you some fucking laundry, Dean?
[SPEAKER_05]: Well, it's like you've got more than one maternity shirt.
[SPEAKER_05]: Right, exactly.
[SPEAKER_05]: No, you've got more than one maternity shirt.
[SPEAKER_05]: And if you are incapable of doing laundry, Scott should be doing the fucking laundry.
[SPEAKER_00]: the blow holes on it.
[SPEAKER_00]: So there's plenty of big guys around that could lend you a t-shirt.
[SPEAKER_05]: Do you have a favorite Wolverine?
[SPEAKER_05]: Wolverine would do her laundry.
[SPEAKER_03]: Let's come on to the beast.
[SPEAKER_03]: Obviously the person you want to do your laundry in the X mansion, like who's going to take the most care of your garments?
[SPEAKER_03]: Obviously it's beast.
[SPEAKER_05]: I think also he would make his own recipe.
[SPEAKER_05]: It's like, like the perfect.
[SPEAKER_03]: I'll have it all washed and dried in four minutes.
[SPEAKER_05]: I'm like, balanced, detergent for each type of clothing.
[SPEAKER_05]: Okay, now that I'm saying that, now I'm like, okay, I need more beast content.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's got so many other connotations.
[SPEAKER_03]: So, I'm around.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that beast can't.
[SPEAKER_03]: is the sewer home of the more locks with Steve called out the Easter egg and then last episode.
[SPEAKER_03]: They are a group of mutants who could never pass for human except for their leader because she just has like an eye patch.
[SPEAKER_03]: They're all in the ground and they're having a bad time.
[SPEAKER_03]: The humans, I think the friends of humanity presumably have Calisto, their leader, and Leach, a green fellow, given to talking about himself in the third person, like a slightly less annoying
[SPEAKER_03]: and Magneto shows up because he's not just saving humans those days, these days, he arrives frequently, so leech and the other more locks and leech is fucking stoked.
[SPEAKER_00]: Bob Gold is getting kidnapped by the friends of humanity.
[SPEAKER_00]: Bob Gold just like this.
[SPEAKER_03]: Did you make it to me, Bob Gold?
[SPEAKER_05]: Did you go see Bob Gold on high school?
[SPEAKER_03]: No, I remember real, like, what the fuck people care about that?
[SPEAKER_05]: Because it gives like extra credit.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, even more reason.
[SPEAKER_05]: our friend Suzanne and I went just because it was at Brighton High School they go check it out and we're just like, what the heck?
[SPEAKER_05]: And then we did go in for a little while and then left.
[SPEAKER_05]: That's how cool we are.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah Bob dole.
[SPEAKER_03]: Anyway, back when back then that was by as bad as a guy with Republicans.
[SPEAKER_03]: Um, the X-Men, as a group, tried to make sense of the professor's choice to give control to Magneto, being awfully fucking magnanimous about it if you ask me.
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I wondered that.
[SPEAKER_05]: I kind of was curious about that given the things that I have seen in the film versions.
[SPEAKER_05]: I was like, they seem kind of like they're being really chill about this.
[SPEAKER_03]: So again, like this is a continuation, there's previous seasons.
[SPEAKER_03]: And in the comics as in the animated series, they are adversaries.
[SPEAKER_03]: And that's never other than really early on when they're like, you know, when Eric and Charles are kind of buddies.
[SPEAKER_03]: They're adversaries and that never changes.
[SPEAKER_03]: But they do have a line of interests fairly often.
[SPEAKER_03]: for the greater good or for like mutant kind or like, you know, for added necessity, it happens periodically.
[SPEAKER_03]: That will be at arms again, but they do have a history of kind of like, I guess we can, you know, put a certain differences, but still it's very, they're very chill about this, like, yeah, because Storm has a line saying something like, well, like, you're our greatest,
[SPEAKER_05]: enemy a lot of the time you're like you're most challenging enemy so I'm like okay I think I have the correct context here
[SPEAKER_03]: you do, you know.
[SPEAKER_03]: So he blows in Magneto as if he owns the place because he does now.
[SPEAKER_03]: And announced he's that he is relocating the more locks to the mutant to the mutant nation of Genocia or is it Genocia?
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.
[SPEAKER_00]: And Genocia in the show.
[SPEAKER_03]: How is that was Gunocia, but I guess it's Genocia?
[SPEAKER_03]: And he doesn't understand why Xavier didn't do it sometime before, which is a pretty good point.
[SPEAKER_03]: They were speaking of adversaries, like more locks are not really
[SPEAKER_03]: Um, they're not too bad as far as adversaries go, um, they're not like evil evil.
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't feel like, but uh, they have the brotherhood of evil mutants.
[SPEAKER_00]: But that the brotherhood of the evil in the name.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just a case anyone got to we are.
[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, there's a whole mutant country like Wakanda, like, yes, kind of.
[SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_05]: So this was an island nation.
[SPEAKER_05]: I want to say.
[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_05]: So they're recognized in the world, they're not a hideout, right?
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, this is like, so this is all kind of after post Charles has after his death, like mutants are kind of being more free and open and stuff.
[SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_03]: So Magneto explains that he's a changed man and Scott tries to get Jean to read his mind and she's not into it.
[SPEAKER_03]: Nor is she in discuss pronouncement that he's not going anywhere, that he's sticking around specifically to keep an eye on Magneto, and then Storm makes the point as Amanda said that they're actually being quite reasonable by wanting evidence that he's changed.
[SPEAKER_03]: we cut down, this was surprising.
[SPEAKER_05]: I get Scott's reaction and I guess that's almost how I would assume more of them would be and then a change reaction was a little surprising to me.
[SPEAKER_03]: They're all pretty subdued about it.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: It gets a little prickly later, but for the wrong reasons, it's pretty, it's kind of funny.
[SPEAKER_03]: But again, I think it demonstrates that they don't hate Magneto.
[SPEAKER_03]: They kind of, I think they kind of get him in some ways, too.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's not as cut and dry, good and evil, as you see.
[SPEAKER_03]: And they try in the movies, especially in later ones, the first class of what not to like make a more of a gray character.
[SPEAKER_03]: Um, but he's, yeah, you know, he sometimes gets in the air.
[SPEAKER_05]: I kind of like it.
[SPEAKER_05]: I do kind of like it because, to me, coming at this from what I know, it's the less obvious choice.
[SPEAKER_05]: And that makes it more interesting.
[SPEAKER_05]: And then we find out, that was a surprise that there's someone on the X-Men team that's, has been in the history with Magneto.
[SPEAKER_03]: So we cut the gene that she's holding an old green costume that she hadn't worn since she was the dark Phoenix and almost killed everybody as she and Storm talk.
[SPEAKER_03]: Gene is already worrying about explaining to her child what it means to be a mutant in the world and the prejudice that he may face.
[SPEAKER_03]: She's already getting an advice on how to have the talk from Storm, who mentions that she kind of always wanted to be human for shadowing.
[SPEAKER_05]: Good lord, yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: little bit.
[SPEAKER_03]: So rogue in Magneto, then touch space in Xavier's office, which is now Magneto's office.
[SPEAKER_03]: Discussing the old relationship that Magneto have with Xavier.
[SPEAKER_03]: Magneto explains that he's there to honor Xavier's last wish because despite their history, Charles Sacrifice himself and as I was just saying this helps sway public opinion concerning mutants dramatically.
[SPEAKER_03]: Rogue reminds Magneto that
[SPEAKER_03]: and he attempts to enforce, he attempts to force some intimacy on her by taking off her ever-present gloves, and she just kind of jerks her hands away.
[SPEAKER_03]: And he responds by asking if the team could ever trust if they knew her secret.
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, boom.
[SPEAKER_05]: And she's like, you got to not spill the tea, dude.
[SPEAKER_03]: I can't stay in the bag, fucker.
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, do not throw me under the bus asshole.
[SPEAKER_03]: Do you know what the secret could be Amanda?
[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, and just, it seems like that they worked together.
[SPEAKER_05]: They're together, that they had a previous romance or a relationship or the body language, the words, it's pretty clear that they are very familiar with each other.
[SPEAKER_03]: There's a little something, something, was to me as far more
[SPEAKER_03]: U.N. forces suddenly show up and draw arms on Magneto with these non-magnate and magnetic weapons, except the dumbasses didn't consider their helicopters.
[SPEAKER_05]: Helicopters?
[SPEAKER_05]: I was like, what the hell?
[SPEAKER_03]: Val Cooper is undonted.
[SPEAKER_03]: Even as blades are spinning near her head and announces that Magneto is under arrest and will be tried by the UN because that's how things work in this world Yeah, he comes right Yeah, I mean, there's some countries where Netanyahu can't go, but Yeah, but that's not sure the way all of them This is not what's going to happen, go It also seems to happen really quick like the next day
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: And it was just as right quickly in their way.
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_05]: And then only one day of hearings, and then they're going to just like decide something right then.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's very fast.
[SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, she's under arrest and we try by the UN, and he calms down deciding that this is opportunity to demonstrate that he hasn't fact changed and allows himself to be handcuffed with what looked like in America.
[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_05]: All right, it seems like given the close ups of his eyes and his facial expression, this is clearly what he was expecting and is wanting.
[SPEAKER_03]: His bright, Paul Newman, baby blues.
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, and that fool the flowing silver fox locks.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yep.
[SPEAKER_03]: Sex magnet.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: Magneto.
[SPEAKER_03]: Sex magneto.
[SPEAKER_03]: What's that?
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: Magneto.
[SPEAKER_03]: All right.
[SPEAKER_03]: So the trial comes to be a magnetic toe.
[SPEAKER_03]: Better than no digits of their magnetic.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, I just have to corner.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'll pick it up with my magnet, too.
[SPEAKER_03]: Logan chills on the couch watching the trial on the news, discussing these events with Jean.
[SPEAKER_03]: It is a moment of, it is a moment that is surprisingly unfraught with sexual or romantic tension until he makes a comment that essentially accuses her of keeping him in the dark about the baby, about potentially leaving and she walks away.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, he does get to be a jilted boyfriend at this point like he is the most emo out of all of them and he always has been in every form they come in like he is just like I don't care how gruffin tough and whatever the fuck burly.
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm driving a cheap kind of guy.
[SPEAKER_03]: He is like he is always the most fucking tortured Especially romantically
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they were silver fox, it was like, and here we go, I mean, yep, so many times.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: And especially with Jean, because it's like the unrequited thing.
[SPEAKER_03]: You're always like the one that she's not going to peg.
[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
[SPEAKER_05]: But then it's like, you know what, don't punish her, don't be a dick.
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, she's literally, if you can't, yeah, if you can't get along then move along, don't punish her because you are jealous.
[SPEAKER_03]: Also though, like, they do have a weird relationship because the romance didn't quite work out, but they still work together in a really intimate working environment, so they're trying to maintain a friendship.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_03]: So like if she keeps him in the dark about some things that she wouldn't keep a friend of the dark about, I could see where he could hurt his feelings.
[SPEAKER_03]: So popper.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so popper.
[SPEAKER_03]: So Magneto is in chains about to address the United Nations.
[SPEAKER_03]: When the leader of the Friends of Humanity, Dom's his mask as he prepares to attack Magneto.
[SPEAKER_03]: He is the executioner.
[SPEAKER_03]: No, not the executioner, just the executioner.
[SPEAKER_03]: and he has a weapon designed to take away mutant powers though we don't know that at this point.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, we see, I think it's either here like when he's before the tribunal, where
[SPEAKER_00]: where the pay homage to the cover art of the uncanny xman number two hundred double size issue from 1985 when Maddie is depicted in shackles with his head down and presumably ass out.
[SPEAKER_05]: So just I have to stop here because first of all the trivia
[SPEAKER_05]: is amazing, right?
[SPEAKER_05]: That's awesome.
[SPEAKER_05]: And then you called him Magnet Zaddy?
[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_05]: Just right.
[SPEAKER_05]: Magnet Zaddy.
[SPEAKER_05]: I love it.
[SPEAKER_05]: I love it so much.
[SPEAKER_03]: Magnet, Magnet, Daddy gets his chance to speak and he has a global audience as the proceedings go live on TV.
[SPEAKER_03]: he says in history sad song there is a refrain believe differently love differently be of different sex or skin and be punished we sing this song to one another oppressed become oppressors and he kind of goes on that vein but man like there's a great fucking dialogue i can't sum it all up here this whole episode he is just spit in like
[SPEAKER_03]: It's like, I don't know, it's large.
[SPEAKER_03]: Lots of truth.
[SPEAKER_03]: Lots of, he's like, France for none, but like a white guy and magnetized.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right, yeah, being that he's more of the France for none, Malcolm X type to the professor exes Martin Luther King Gandhi type.
[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_03]: That is, okay, so you just said, okay, like that was new to you.
[SPEAKER_03]: Just, just, just, just, so that's a nerve thing.
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, they're literally modeled on that relationship.
[SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_03]: It would agree.
[SPEAKER_03]: To a degree.
[SPEAKER_03]: To a degree.
[SPEAKER_03]: For what it was like, you know, a public misperception of reality, that was encouraged by the biography, the Malcolm X biography, from what's his name, Alex.
[SPEAKER_03]: Haley, that also, the started this fiction that they had a lot more animosity between Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., that was really there, but it was, in that book, came out I think after these characters were created, but I know that that relationship does somewhat inform these characters and they always have.
[SPEAKER_05]: I'm a little surprised and, I mean, is that something that was said or known from a long time ago?
[SPEAKER_05]: Because in today's viewing, it seems like, oh, you're whitewashing this thing.
[SPEAKER_05]: And like, this is a show about, like, this is a woke show.
[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
[SPEAKER_05]: This is about civil rights and human rights and well, that's it right there.
[SPEAKER_03]: They've always been about civil rights.
[SPEAKER_03]: So in the 1960s when this came out that these characters originally debuted Storm was not introduced until what I don't know even know like the he was as late as the ABC Steve, I'm not sure it was a wild.
[SPEAKER_03]: It wasn't
[SPEAKER_03]: So we were going to get this.
[SPEAKER_05]: We're going to get this to a wider audience, to younger audiences, to support these ideas of civil rights.
[SPEAKER_05]: So we got to do it.
[SPEAKER_05]: If we got to make them white, that's less important than.
[SPEAKER_03]: Like to a degree to a degree because we're talking about Stanley and Stanley is someone who always Peppered people of color into his characters of superheroes of villains and of regular people because he always wanted his worked You know, not that he was the artist, but still he was always trying to like make sure that it reflected reality But yeah, X-Men all white
[SPEAKER_03]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_00]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_00]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_00]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_00]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_00]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_00]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_00]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_00]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_00]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_05]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_05]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_03]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_03]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_05]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_05]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_05]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_03]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_03]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_03]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_03]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_03]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_00]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_00]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_00]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_00]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_00]: Stan Lee.
[SPEAKER_03]: to do was totally a narcissist, but I mean, he uses powers for good, you know, compared to most of them.
[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
[SPEAKER_05]: So in this from today's eyes, it's like, okay, I stand, you're good.
[SPEAKER_05]: We'll let that other stuff slide.
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, and then so this thread is being picked up by Bo Demio and other writers, and again, Bo Demio is a gay man of color, and I think that there's a lot more allegories, I think being made towards the LGBT community now, which makes it possible.
[SPEAKER_03]: So, Eric speaks of justice and healing as well as how mutant kind has faced near genocide from humans, the UN Council appears dubious.
[SPEAKER_03]: Protesters breach the perimeter, coming from Magneto and anyone else, there are heavy shades of January 6th, as the politicians worry that they will be attached by angry rioters in the X-Men leap into action.
[SPEAKER_00]: FOH does a JAN six at UNHQ.
[SPEAKER_05]: Big one.
[SPEAKER_05]: Letters there.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's we like clearly an influence.
[SPEAKER_03]: You had headquarters being overranned by riders who are after people like that is.
[SPEAKER_03]: You this that would not have happened had this been written in 2019.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_03]: Meanwhile Logan is ready to come to the rest of the X-Men's aid, but Gene teleknotically puts his coat in car keys in his hands and tells him that baby is coming, he pulls out on his Jeep, almost taking out a dog, and some pedestrians.
[SPEAKER_05]: This whole thing is so I was irritated with us.
[SPEAKER_05]: Like, Gene is like an X-Men, a mutant, incredible power.
[SPEAKER_05]: And there's no fucking plan.
[SPEAKER_05]: There's no plan.
[SPEAKER_03]: Doesn't need a Jeep.
[SPEAKER_05]: But there's no plan like we're just going to go to the hot like, what the fuck are you Amanda.
[SPEAKER_03]: I think it's Amanda.
[SPEAKER_05]: I'm frozen.
[SPEAKER_03]: How about show.
[SPEAKER_05]: I was going off about how she's so powerful and she's an X men and she's an important person.
[SPEAKER_05]: Like, there would be a plan that this is just willing and there's no plan.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we're all leaving to go to the UN.
[SPEAKER_03]: Um, you're about to pop.
[SPEAKER_03]: So, bye.
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_05]: And then, but then the plan is like, we're just someone's going to just take you to a random hospital.
[SPEAKER_05]: No, Gene would have a birth plan.
[SPEAKER_05]: And there would be special precautions because of her being such a powerful mutant.
[SPEAKER_05]: So I was just kind of like this part's dumb.
[SPEAKER_03]: Sometimes there is some, like, as there was with the speedy public trial, if you will.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, together.
[SPEAKER_03]: There are some cartoony leaps and logic.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's for sure.
[SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_03]: Back at the United Nations building, Riders run a muck and the executioner enters.
[SPEAKER_03]: He takes on the X-Men almost single-handedly, blasting them this way in that before clamping a depouring collar on Bishop and booting his ass through a window like they were in a bar
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I know I wondered here about like how this guy is so good.
[SPEAKER_05]: He's not immune and how is he doing such a good job with Bishop and then with Scott I was confused
[SPEAKER_03]: this is a problem we had at the that I had at least with the beginning of the last episode for some reason these humans when armed with sentinel technology are able just fucking kick expens asses like nothing and they're overpowered even with that technology they shouldn't be that skilled like Scott is a master fucking fighter
[SPEAKER_05]: All right, yeah, so I was just, I thought it was odd because if it was just the weapon, then you would need to show the him like hitting them with the weapons to take their power out, but it was just with the regular combat fighting.
[SPEAKER_05]: That's what I was surprised about.
[SPEAKER_03]: Scott has karate.
[SPEAKER_03]: He does, ready, right?
[SPEAKER_05]: But he gets his goggles jangled up and he just buys her off.
[SPEAKER_05]: Again.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and rather than take out everyone around him, Cyclops closes his eyes and fights blind.
[SPEAKER_03]: Which, you know, almost everybody around him would be the enemies, but he doesn't want to kill him or I guess I don't know if he again I don't know if he can necessarily if this is him like he I don't know.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's a little unclear again We talked about how he could split sentences in half, but full blasts at a human just kind of makes him lose the breath like knocks a window It doesn't go well, and he gets lecture by executioner as he gets his ass beat
[SPEAKER_03]: Morph enters the fray as Lady Death Strike, then Colossus, then Silac, and he manages to hold executioner at bay.
[SPEAKER_03]: Scott gets his butt.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's a fun little moment.
[SPEAKER_03]: We have to see all these characters that we're not going to get in their actual actuality, so we'll take him in this version.
[SPEAKER_03]: Morph, the Morph version.
[SPEAKER_03]: Scott gets his visor back on and learns from a telepathic message from Jean that she's in labor.
[SPEAKER_03]: Storm orders the humans around he'd by commands and you shall survive.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, how do you not listen to her cuts right through the bullshit?
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, and here is this goddess black woman telling these political
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, she takes charge and her commands include free magneto from his empowering collar so that he may fight with the X-Men, showing that circumstances are forcing her acceptance of his addition to the team.
[SPEAKER_03]: At the hospital, the OBGYN, who they're meeting for the first fucking time apparently, because there is no birth plan.
[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you.
[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you.
[SPEAKER_03]: Refuses to do mutant birds out of the fear of what could happen to him when confronted, confronted with a
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, struggling, flailing and freaking out mutin' mother and distress.
[SPEAKER_03]: This would be reasonable if you didn't say it like a dick.
[SPEAKER_03]: He even says you people.
[SPEAKER_05]: That's my fault.
[SPEAKER_03]: So Scott suggests the rogue that she used her powers.
[SPEAKER_03]: A suckout is medical skills.
[SPEAKER_03]: I guess specifically, or maybe she gets everything.
[SPEAKER_03]: She knows he's like his graduate or open her number.
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.
[SPEAKER_03]: What she does, making the doctor collapse and fuck off to you, sir.
[SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_04]: But does that kill them?
[SPEAKER_03]: It can't, but it's pretty rare that she takes it to that point.
[SPEAKER_05]: So he's probably just like passed out for a while.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, he needs a recharge.
[SPEAKER_03]: He's a little nap food.
[SPEAKER_05]: Sleep off.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's going to have a bad headache.
[SPEAKER_03]: He's going to need a lot of water when he gets up.
[SPEAKER_03]: That kind of thing is sitting.
[SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_05]: Like a hangover.
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_05]: He's going to need some electrolytes.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: She just depleted him.
[SPEAKER_03]: And the United Nations building Magneto makes a shield to protect himself.
[SPEAKER_03]: The X-Men and the human from the rider is then he creates a giant, straight giant cage and with to trap them with Storm's help.
[SPEAKER_03]: They basically just make like a giant like electrical fence for the humans, like an animals, what's this funny?
[SPEAKER_03]: Storm sees that Magneto is about to be shot by the executioner and saves him taking the shot herself.
[SPEAKER_00]: Magnus is such a good Clint Eastwood impression.
[SPEAKER_00]: Scott takes the ball as she goes into the line of fire.
[SPEAKER_03]: She does.
[SPEAKER_03]: She does.
[SPEAKER_03]: I see you, Eric, standing over the grave of another dead X-Men.
[SPEAKER_05]: Magnus, I thought maybe she was dead.
[SPEAKER_03]: I didn't know what the weapon was.
[SPEAKER_03]: You knew it was powerful, but you didn't know what we were doing.
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I was like, oh my god, are they, is this like, am I not going to see you anymore?
[SPEAKER_05]: I really thought that could be a possibility.
[SPEAKER_03]: Storm is one of the major characters.
[SPEAKER_03]: She's in a mega level mutant.
[SPEAKER_03]: She's one of the most powerful mutant.
[SPEAKER_03]: If not, the emo is powerful mutant on the team, other than Jean Gray, I suppose, and Charles.
[SPEAKER_03]: She is downed by the shot.
[SPEAKER_03]: Magneto uses his powers to bind executioner to the UN seal upside down like a Roman crucifix style and takes his weapon.
[SPEAKER_03]: Storm tries to use your powers and proclaims that she can no longer feel the breeze or the moisture in the air and it's tragic.
[SPEAKER_03]: What has he done to me?
[SPEAKER_03]: What she says, he's done well over that key point.
[SPEAKER_03]: What has you done to me is when I keep on trying to say
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a really big, it's pants out of a powerful moment here.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: Magneto speechifies and toning that this is what mutants get for helping humans basically.
[SPEAKER_03]: That he takes executioner and all the judges and Val Cooper and maybe like a random guard or two.
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not sure if anybody is that's going for this ride, but he takes them all into the air.
[SPEAKER_03]: So high that they're breath freezes and tells them that he could kill them all if you want to do.
[SPEAKER_03]: because we all got to share the same earth.
[SPEAKER_03]: And let's em all get a good, long look at the ground that's so far away below them and says, please, do not make me let you down.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, another one, we already had one in the episode with the, I got my eye on you from Cyclops, and then we get to, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
[SPEAKER_05]: That's good.
[SPEAKER_05]: I like it.
[SPEAKER_03]: I like it too, who am I kidding?
[SPEAKER_03]: And then he said it.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_05]: He said to tear here, which doesn't seem performative, given that he's like facing away from everyone.
[SPEAKER_05]: I thought that was interesting.
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, tear for Charles.
[SPEAKER_03]: A single tear for Charles.
[SPEAKER_03]: uh... jean and scott cuttle their new son Nathan charl somers and she tell scott that their son has their father's uh... has his father's eyes and real mar real heads get themselves a little chubby when they hear the name Nathan somers because they have a child looks like an eighteen-month-old
[SPEAKER_05]: Looks like it's just a straight way to 18-month-old.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, how fast he's going to grow.
[SPEAKER_05]: Don't worry.
[SPEAKER_05]: Oh, okay.
[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_05]: I'm so forward-shattering, man.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's what it is.
[SPEAKER_03]: Look at this giant lump of the baby.
[SPEAKER_03]: The news provides yet more exposition, and we learned that the UN has parted Magneto and is talking about allowing Genoa into the UN.
[SPEAKER_00]: Scott bring it's in all of the world it's the January six or sick it pardon.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah well yeah and and no one's bringing Palestine in at this point.
[SPEAKER_03]: Scott brings Eric some coffee and
[SPEAKER_03]: Scott, it tacitly acknowledges that he and Gene will be leaving after all, and that he'll just have to trust Xavier's judgment with Magneto, and Magneto says, again, with what seems like it's sincerity, that it was a good week from Uton Kine, but that it came with a cost referring to Storm.
[SPEAKER_03]: Not, you know, the trash in the view end building.
[SPEAKER_03]: The cost of, yes, it storms powers which Beast is trying to figure out.
[SPEAKER_03]: We learned that she has been given a concentrated dose of radiated radiation that which is affected her DNA.
[SPEAKER_03]: He tells her that her powers are likely gone for good.
[SPEAKER_03]: In shock, she goes to her bedroom and is looking at her chair uniform when a rumble of thunder from the storm outside startles her and she looks at the rain like it is a stranger.
[SPEAKER_05]: This is so obvious, right?
[SPEAKER_05]: But it was just such a great illustration of her being divorced from.
[SPEAKER_05]: right to divorce from the weather.
[SPEAKER_05]: This is probably something that's never happened to her.
[SPEAKER_00]: Are you starting to be like losing a sense to be like, you're blind or deaf or, yeah.
[SPEAKER_05]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, the thing that makes you special, the thing that makes you connected to the world in a way, to be in the atmosphere, whether you know the moisture in the air, like she was talking about.
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, it's how you experience and move through the world and is her identity.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: Storm leaves a deer gene letter explaining that she's no longer can be an X man.
[SPEAKER_03]: As we hear her speech, you know, like being read over, we see Rogue and Magneto hold hands.
[SPEAKER_03]: His powers given him the ability to withstand her touch.
[SPEAKER_03]: Morph brings beer and chips to Logan to cheer him up, but when that doesn't work, he turns into Logan's old sparring partners.
[SPEAKER_03]: Saber-tooth, and they kind of have themselves a little playful.
[SPEAKER_03]: They're bad.
[SPEAKER_03]: They wrestle.
[SPEAKER_03]: They wrestle.
[SPEAKER_03]: Have themselves a wrestle.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, I love that moment.
[SPEAKER_03]: Gambit watches rogues sneak out of Magnita's room and in the morning we see storm board of bus in a very pedestrian style just get on a bus if that that hair is way too much for that bus.
[SPEAKER_05]: It totally is.
[SPEAKER_05]: I want to be like storm hunt.
[SPEAKER_05]: You don't have your powers.
[SPEAKER_00]: You need to
[SPEAKER_03]: the cage and notices the spark between the southern veil and the purple mountain zagasty and then stormfucks off on a greyhound like with that air really funny it's kind of uninditionally funny Jean reads the farewell letter to the rest of the x-man and gambit uses the the opportunity to express some hostility towards magneto
[SPEAKER_03]: The doorbell rings and to everyone's astonishment, it is another Jean Grey.
[SPEAKER_03]: In distress, she says, I need the X-Men and collapses.
[SPEAKER_03]: Roll credits.
[SPEAKER_00]: and it's more answering the bell.
[SPEAKER_00]: So for once, we know it's not one of his little praise.
[SPEAKER_00]: Great point.
[SPEAKER_05]: It's not more.
[SPEAKER_05]: It's the long lost separated at birth, twin sister, insert the, uh, the gasping, shocked face, like lady from Telemundo, like that, like that meme.
[SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, I could see why you'd want to go right into the next episode.
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: Quite the cliffhanger, but again, it's a soap opera, so double the other finger.
[SPEAKER_05]: And Gambit, when he was in the hallway watching her sneak out, he's holding the Queen of Hearts card.
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh yeah.
[SPEAKER_05]: And he's all angry.
[SPEAKER_05]: He's like sad, and he's got to like, I'm going to pick a fight with that jerk.
[SPEAKER_00]: come and have a look.
[SPEAKER_00]: We have a bunch of emo divas here.
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, this is straight out of like the young and the restless type of stuff.
[SPEAKER_05]: I love it.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's awesome.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I'm critical.
[SPEAKER_05]: I'm critical about some stuff, but it's so entertaining.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, because I mean, again, it's, even though it's not really for kids at this point because it's, you know, it's aimed at like 45 year olds.
[SPEAKER_03]: But it's still kind of like ostensibly a serity more in cartoon.
[SPEAKER_03]: So it still has a lot of those leaps in logic and conventions.
[SPEAKER_03]: even a story can happen so the story can happen and quicker whatever right yeah they do at the same time it's dealing with these yeah it's dealing with these big issues like genocide and civil rights and
[SPEAKER_03]: sexual identity generation, yeah.
[SPEAKER_05]: And juggling all of that with the action-fighting sequences, having enough time to develop the characters, because I feel connected to the characters, like these characters, like this version of, they're doing a really good job with that, getting those things in really quickly.
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's pretty well handled, I feel like I'm pretty happy.
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: Now I have seen this show before, but this is the first time revisiting it.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so far it's living up to my memory of it from a couple years ago.
[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm looking forward to getting this season three, or excuse me, episode three.
[SPEAKER_03]: What do you guys want?
[SPEAKER_03]: Do you want me to do the trivia next time, or do you want to continue with our rotation and skip me?
[SPEAKER_03]: It's up to you guys, I don't care.
[SPEAKER_00]: Amanda, do you want to make a new graphic or not, is basically what he's asking?
[SPEAKER_05]: Oh, that's good, though, yeah.
[SPEAKER_05]: That's fine.
[SPEAKER_05]: Well, I don't mind just this reading this as your turn.
[SPEAKER_05]: I'm fine with that.
[SPEAKER_05]: I don't feel like I want to be like, you got to stay out for school, no, I'll try this.
[SPEAKER_05]: Like, that's fine.
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't try this for you to attention.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, next time I'm on trivia, I'll try and bring it a little bit more.
[SPEAKER_05]: So yeah, come on, come on, write some jeopardy level trivia Travis, no, it's fine with that.
[SPEAKER_03]: Alright, we wrap up a little early today unless you guys have anything else you wanted to say other than obviously email us at 799-D-394 at gmail.no, email us at small screen sessions
[SPEAKER_03]: at gmail.com, and we don't have any social media that we monitor, or even that exists.
[SPEAKER_03]: So that's your only option.
[SPEAKER_03]: We do.
[SPEAKER_03]: All right.
[SPEAKER_03]: You're in charge of social media, aren't you?
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, we first started the podcast, it was like, who's gonna do that?
[SPEAKER_05]: And I'm like, I guess I'll try, but, you know, I've been real, real bad at that.
[SPEAKER_05]: So I just start flicking that out there, maybe it would help.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you really felt if you came back one day, you're like, oh yeah, there's like a thousand people in our discord.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's not like an Indonesia.
[SPEAKER_00]: I've actually been pocketing a bunch of Patreon money.
[SPEAKER_04]: I thought it surprised you guys.
[SPEAKER_04]: I booked us a live tour.
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm out of town roads in Genocia.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're now sponsored by Genocia mattress.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, they love us there.
[SPEAKER_04]: They can't get enough.
[SPEAKER_00]: And me on these.
[SPEAKER_03]: All right everybody.

[SPEAKER_03]: We will see you next time here at Smalls Marines.
[SPEAKER_00]: Here we go.
