Speaker 1: Hi, worriers. Welcome to aren't you worried? I'm your host

Lauren Perry, and joining me this week is my long

standing summer guest, my sister Amanda. Hi, Amanda, Hi, welcome back.

How are you. I'm doing pretty well? Class is over,

Classes over ya, final is done, so you have the

next five weeks off? Yeah? Five or six? I'm trying

to tell you, but math has been hard today. Well

it's the eighteenth and you go back on the twenty fourth,

So five weeks that's five. Yeah, you're right. I was

big for six. We will say six. Six is well?

You know what add seven for all we care? Who cares? Six?

It by heart time is a construct? It's fine? Really,

is there any how are you? I know that you

just wrapped up class, So have you gotten anything else

it's done since we've talked last, or are you doing

anything fun? Coming up? Two things? So since we talked last,

I got two new certifications that are very fun putting

fun in quotes. I'm now certified to respond to sexual

violence and domestic violence. Yay. And what does that mean exactly?

It's two two day trainings that are put on by

one of the counties near me where it's mostly for advocates,

but we're we went me and my colleagues went to

like be able to properly do trauma informed intakes and

in interviews and stuff for our investigations. So some of

it was irrelevant to us, but some of it was.

And even just learning domestic violence is complicated, so even

like learning what could the aspects of it that we

maybe didn't think about before was really helpful. So that

was really interesting. The sexual violence when we had more

of a background already, so like, yeah, it was a

little bit more of repeat, but just like nice to

hear it from people again. And then a fun thing

coming up is in well, next week, mom and Dad

are visiting. Yes, yay, you can be with mom and

dad for a whole week. That's amazing. Actually, by the

time this episode comes out, they'll be here, I believe,

Yeah they will yep. And then not the week after that,

but like well almost the week after that, my husband

and I get to spend a week out west and

I'm gonna be working remotely, which just because I don't

have enough leave, but I'm just excited to go out

west where our hearts are. So where are you going?

Out West Seattle area. Oh my gosh, amazing. Yeah, I'm

trying to. It's not like I'm convincing him, but my

husband and I are working on if we're going to

go to San Diego, Seattle or colle At next summer.

So because you're trying to get all the ballparks in,

we are trying to get all the ballparks in, and we,

as much as we want to do all the ones

close to home first, we should probably do like one

year travel, one year we can drive, one year we

can travel instead of doing like all the driving right

away and then we're like fuck, yeah, now we have

to fly exactly for it, drive you know days. Yeah. Yeah,

I like, there are just some I refuse to drive to.

Like I won't drive to Florida again. We've done that

once when we were children, and I'm still not a fan.

Yeah No, And I won't probably do anything on the

other side of the Rockies just because I don't want to. Yeah, yeah,

I agree. I made the drive with mom and dad,

not this past winter, but the winter before to Arizona.

It was I think we took I think we say,

two nights in hotels, Like I think it was like

three days of driving. It's a long drive. Yeah, and

when it's just the two of us, like, we're fine,

but I always feel like I have to be awake

since it is just the two of us. Yea. And

I'm such a car sleeper, so I would like I

would like a third so I could be like I

can sleep and not feel bad about it. Yes. Yes,

whenever I'm with mom and Dad, they let me because

I usually am the one that takes care of directions. Sure,

so they let me choose the music. I'm amazing. I

spend a lot of the drive singing amazing love. Are

you ready to get into today's episode? I am perfect.

This week, I'd like to give a shout out to

my main source. I watched an episode of Autopsy, which

was narrated by doctor Michael Hunter, who is a medical

examiner and forensic pathologist. I loved it. I've never heard

of that. I hadn't either, what's it on Peacock? I

was like, is it on Prime? Not ites on Peacock? Peacock? Okay, Yes,

I loved it. The way that doctor Michael Hunter speaks

to me. I was like, you could read me a

bedtime story because it's it's kind of Morrison, yes, Harrison Keith,

it's kind of like but you know, Keith is very

serious and to the point yes, and he has certain

inflections that are like, yes, doctor Michael Hunter is like

and that was when I realized. I'm like, yes, sir,

So what did you realize? It was wonderful? So I'm

gonna have to watch that. Also, it was written. It

was presented to me like he's the narrator, but it

was presented to everyone like he's the one that solved

the case. But he's just reading the transcripts and stuff.

So that's how he's telling it. So if I, oh, okay,

if I accidentally say and that's when doctor Michael Hunter discovered,

I do mean that that's when the investigators discovered. But

he's saying it in his tense because whatever. So so

March twelfth, twenty eleven, eight am Jana Murray's mutilated body

was found in the back of a Lululemon Athletic a

store in Bethesda, Maryland. Oh Boy. Jana was thirty years

old and had been brutally attacked and left for dead

in Little Lemon. In Lulu Lemon, okay, I looked and

looked and looked. The store has since moved, so I

don't know got it where. It just said it was

in the heart of Bethesda, but I don't. That means

nothing to me. But yeah, it's a DC suburb that's

barely in Maryland. It's like right on the edge of

d C. Yeah, would surprise me if after this they

had to move, just because the rich ladies who want

their ath leisure probably would be a little put off

by you know, yeah in the in the Lulu Lemon,

in the Lululemon. Yeah. So, Jana's co worker Brittany Norwood

was found nearby. Her hands were tied above her head

and she was very bloody but semi conscious. Boy, as

Amanda just said, Bethesda, Maryland is a suburb of Washington,

d C. In today, It's okay, I I knew, like,

you are so close to this area. I would like,

I'm doing this in case you don't say it. But

I'm ninety two percent sure she'll bring it up, so

it's fine. In twenty ten, it had a population of

around sixty thousand people. It was like sixty three thousand,

but I say sixty thousand. When you think of Bethesda,

you think of wealth and charm. It's full of lawyers, scientists,

and journalists. Bethesda is incredibly safe. You would have no

problem walking down the street during a late evening early

morning during the late evening or early morning hours. A

list of notable people from Bethesda includes olympian Katie Lideki

and actress Julia Louise Dreyfus. Those were the only two

people that I thought were kind of not problematic or

I knew where they were. We looked into when you

moved out here. We looked into living in Bethesa because

it would have been a pretty equidistant drive for both

of us. It is so expensive, yeah, like we couldn't

afford it, so we are not living there, so we

You and I used to watch a lot of n

C I s growing up with Dad. Yeah, well and Mom,

but mostly Dad was really I thought it was buff festa.

So it was very alarming to me doing this research

that it's not so. Yeah. So if I say, befesda

leave it alone. That was that was said. That was

strictly me hearing it and never even bothering to look about.

When I was watching the first time I watched the autopsy,

I was like where I was like, it's Beth, not Beth.

It's so. And also if I do an emphasis on

the it's because I'm trying really hard to not be

an idiot. I love. Like that was just that was

just one of those things. And it was like two

weeks ago. I was like, I'm so fucking stupid. I

don't live in the East. I've never I don't know.

I know because I'm around here right right. I mean,

I'm and you've been out there multiple times. It's not

like you when you moved out there, so this is

the first time. It's not the first time you've lived

over there. So in the heart of Bethesda. Lululemon Athletica

was located. On March eleventh, twenty eleven, at about nine pm,

supervisor Jana Murray was getting ready to close the store

with her coworker and saleswoman, Brittany Norwood. Jana was always

in the center of what was happening in the store.

She knew how to connect with customers and give them

a special experience in the store. She would work with

the customers from start to finish, and she made sure

that they left with exactly what they came in for.

Plus usually more. Yeah, Jana had the personality the size

of Texas and she was from Texas. Also, I should

say I never caught her name. There's a talking head

on this episode of Autopsy. I think she was some reporter.

She reminds me so much of Grace, Nancy Grace. She

kind of had that very whatever. She just wasn't as

problematic this woman. So that I really enjoyed this one.

Was her hair as big because Nancy Nancy Grace's hair

is full of secrets. It's not that big, but it

is pretty close. Okay. I mean, you know it's always

overdone for the television, but television, this reporter was just like,

she had the personality the size of Texas and she

was from Texas. I was like, you're funny, You're dude, okay.

Jana was energetic, bubbly, and ambitious. She was the go

to person for a true and genuine friendship. She was

also a very accomplished athlete. She was a dancer and

a gymnast. She was also very adventurous. For a previous birthday,

she went bungee jumping and casual. Yeah, and she was

just ready for the rush all the time. And they

showed a video of her, she like just jumps off

the ledge. There's no like one, two, three, go, there's

no like whatever. She's just like bye, and that couldn't

be me. The same day and I don't know much

about bungee jumping because I don't like heights. But then

she goes again. Oh so she jumps off, just jumps

forward and she's like living her dream. And then they

show another video where she's like, I need to do

it again. She's facing the camera and just like jumps backwards.

I was like, ma'am, well, could not be me? Could

not I mean even watching the videos because then they

like go down and show of course sponging. Yeah. I

was like, no, thanks, I'm good. Nope, nope. There's some

I think it's a movie. I don't remember what though,

where they're bungee jumping and the thing at the end

is like their heads dip in the water. Oh yeah,

I'm like, no, thank you. Not only did I just

do the most terrifying thing in my life And I

might be dead by the time I hit the water,

but then my hair will be wet. Kidding the last

part you wanted to get wet? Why would I do that?

And what if the rope was a little too long,

or you were just a little too tall or heavy

or yes, anything could go wrong. I don't want to

light dip when it could be a full on dunk. Okay,

that's what I'm saying. Also, just speaking of bungee jumping,

this is like a good bungee jumping story. She's smiling,

she's laughing the whole time. I haven't heard any updates

about that woman I believe in Brazil that was thrown

off that bungee, Yeah, jumpy thing. Have you heard more

about it? No, But I was thinking of that when

you were telling this, I was like, oh my god,

there's been several there was I watched something, of course

I don't remember. I remember hers a TikTok or like

something I watched on TV. But where you watch someone

didn't want to do it, and someone without her having

the rope bott pushed her off, and I was like

mm mmmmmmm mmmm No. Again, those are like I'm choosing

to believe because I haven't heard anything else that the

woman that was thrown that was just an accident. That's

what I'm choosing to believe because I haven't heard otherwise.

I hope so but yeah, yeah, but oh my heart,

I know, I don't even like thinking about the prospect

of standing on the edge of something about a jump off.

So I remember when we went to the Grand Canyon

and I looked over and I held onto my glasses.

Yeah mean, I was like, what if they fall? What

will I do? Oblind, I'm so blind, I will be Yeah, well,

I just won't see the rest of the trip. Actually, right,

that was before I got contacts. I guess I'm done here. Yeah, okay,

So back to Jana. Oh, it looks like she jumps

a few times because then she's looking back into the camera,

she's backwards, and she's just smiling the whole time. She

honestly looks like she's having a ball. And good for

her and Jana's adventures were encouraged by her close knit family.

Her dad had been in the military and her mother

was a social worker. That's all I found out about them.

But it seemed like they were all thicke as thieves. Good.

I like that. Jana's job at Lululemon was just the

start of her life plan. Jana had picked up the

job at Lululemon because she was getting her MBA from

Johns Hopkins University. Nice, she dreamed. Her dream was to

move to Lulua Lemon's headquarters in some near Washington and

build her career from there. But cool, yeah, she literally did,

I'm going to start from the bottom and do all

the levels. Yeah, I love That's awesome. And then you, yeah,

you can go to the corporate and be like, I

actually have experience in the store right where I feel

like some corporate people would not have that experience. No. Yeah,

So she was very successful, brilliant, and she was just

an all around wonderful woman. Brittany Norwood had recently joined

the Bethesda store and immediately made an impact. She would

get up bright and early and start her day off

with yoga class, and then she would go in to

her spin class, and then she would go to work,

and then she would go out with friends and party

and dance the night away. She was NonStop. That's exhausting

just to hear you say it. I know, I did

like one thing yesterday and I'm really tired, but the

one thing was your final I don't they just they

just like it sounds like Brittany just was always NonStop,

and that's like what she thrived on was mean, that's

excellent for her. Yeah, getting up at five am and

partying until like one. No, and she did it all

the time, which is cool. If that's what you want

to do, you only need four hours of sleep and

that's how you thrive. Excellent at twenty eight years old. Yeah,

this wasn't like she was like twenty twenty one. She

was twenty eight and she was doing this, which and

I'm not dogging her at all. I wish I could.

It's impressive. I wish I could do that one night

a week, not the getting up at five o'clock part,

the say I don't do it it's a week. I'm

thinking maybe once a year and then I'll take the

next year to recover. Sometimes I do wish I could

stay up to eleven, And it wasn't because I accidentally

fell asleep early and now I'm awake at eleven. Yeah

that's true. I mean, I'm up that late a lot,

but it's because I did. But I try to stay

in bed as long as possible, so five am is

not a time that agrees with me. Nope. No. So.

Brittany grew up in a very large family on the

West Coast. She was one of nine children. Oh and

like Jane, Brittany was an accomplished athlete, she was a

fantastic soccer player. She was recruited. She was recruited at

a college in New York State and was given a

full scholarship to play soccer. And like most what college

you know, they didn't say, oh okay, And I think

there's a reason for that. Oh okay, we'll get to

that later. Okay, then I won't look it up. And

like most women who worked at lu Lemon at the time,

she became a very familiar face in the community. I

should Okay, two things I don't work out and Lululemon

is out of my price range. Okay, so I don't

know much about it, so I have strictly I usually

get them by the outlet stores. But yeah, like I

went strictly off of what I found in research. So

if I'm wrong, I'm sorry. But also I feel like

a lot of high end stores do this, so it

doesn't seem that out of Probably not wrong. Yeah, especially

in Bethesda where it's like kind of higher class. Yeah,

I think Bethesa is like the Georgetown of that area

of Maryland. Is that like the Grage of New York. Yeah,

like all of the stores, Like you're not gonna find

like a Target, but you're gonna find like designer jeans,

designer clothes, lu Lemon, Kirkland. Sure there's there's one another

one that's coming up and coming like wor vuo ri

I v feuory Okay. Tom Holland is doing ads for

them now, good for their for their golf line. So

like I think there are like those kinds of stores,

kind of cluster okay together. Yeah, like a lot of

nicer branding companies. They would wear the workers would wear

Lulu Lemon merchandise out when they would go to their

spin classes and yoga for advertisement. So I got it

for either free or real cheap. I would guess real cheap.

Free doesn't seem like something I agree with you now

that I said it out loud. Yeah, probably not free.

So Brittany would go to her yoga class and people

would see her in yoga and they'd be like, oh

my gosh, I love your fit. Where did you get it?

And she'd say, I got it at Lululemon. And then

they would go to Lulu Lemon and they would see

her familiar face. It was actually wonderful advertising. That would

be great advertising. Yes, so that seems like a very

common practice in like higher end stuff. Yeah, they give

you something, probably pretty cheap, with the agreement that you

will wear it. Yeah, it's just branding. It's just what

it is. I also didn't need to spell it out

for you, but doctor Michael Hunter spelled it out for me.

So here we are, okay, okay. So back to March eleventh,

twenty eleven, Jana and Brittany closed up the store and

they were done with their shift and they left. Uh

it sounded like their shift ended at nine, and they

left at nine forty five, and both women headed home.

As Brittany was moving further down the street, she realized, fuck,

I for got my wallet. Uh. So she called Jaana

and said, hey, I'm so sorry, but can you actually

come back to the store with me. I have to

grab my wallet. It has my pass in it and

I can't get on the train without my pass to

get home. Yeah. Yeah, back then they didn't have it

on the on the phones. Yeah. So and of course

Jana was like, of course I'm not gonna Yeah, I'm

not going to strand you. That would be ridiculous. So

both women are turned back to the store. At nine

to fifty pm that evening, with no sign of the

wallet in the store, Jana and Brittany headed to the

back of the store and after that no one saw

or heard from either one of them for the next

ten hours. Oh my goodness. Okay. The following day, Saturday,

March twelfth, twenty eleven, at eight am, assistant manager Rachel

arrived at Lululemon to open the store for the day.

As she approached the front doors, she discovered evidence of

a break in. I don't think she ever went in

the store, but it was very apparent from outside. So

she called nine one one, yep, And the beginning of

the call kind of goes like this, nine on one,

what's your emergency, Rachel, I'm opening up my Lulu Lemon

store and the door is completely open, and I can

hear someone moaning in the back, and it looks like

it's been vandalized, and I'm so scared to go in.

So as Rachel waited outside for police to show up,

she flagged down it seems like like a random passerby

that was a man, and she asked him for help,

and then she called nine on one again, nine on one,

what's your emergency, Rachel, it looks like there was a struggle.

Nine on one. What's the name of the business, Yes, Rachel,

it's Lululemon Athletica. Like it's been vandalized, like there was

a fight. I'm so scared that one of my girls

is hurt. So the passer by that Rachel had flagged down,

his name was Ryan. Ryan went into the store and

what he found was shocking. Poor Ryan just happening to comebye. Yeah, seriously.

He saw bloody footprints on the floor and there was

blood seeping from under the door. You really, yeah, Like

the back door was closed and it was coming out

from there. Oh God. And then Rachel reports back, so

I think she was still on that second call. Rachel

reports back to nine on one that and she said,

it appears that someone is dead. Jana Murray was discovered

face down and she had lost a She had lost

a huge amount of blood. There was a toolbox that

was thrown on top of her body, and there were

an assortment of tools scattered around her. And as Ryan

kept walking through the store, he made another discovery. He

discovered a woman was alive and breathing. She was tied

up and she was very bloody, but she was breathing.

Brittany Norwood was found unconscious with her hand with her

hands tied above her head and they were restrained by

plastic cable ties. Her face was covered in blood and

she had wounds all over her body. At first glance,

this appeared to be a violent robbery that had left

one girl dead and one girl severely injured on March Awful.

On March eleventh, twenty eleven, at ten twenty pm, thirty

year old Jana Murray was brutally murdered in the Lululemon

store in Bethesda, Maryland, and twenty eight year old Brittany

Norwood was brutally attacked and left for dead on March

twelfth at ten am, just two hours after assistant manager

Rachel and random passer by Ryan discovered this horrific crime

scene inside the Lula Lemon store. State's attorney John McCarthy

was alerted of the crime within minutes of its discovery,

so by ten o'clock he was there. Okay, okay, yep,

one of the girls appeared to be dead. He was

told like when he got the call, he said, you know,

if here someone is dead and the other one is

on the way to the emergency room. Okay. As the

only survivor, Brittany Norwood was going to be the key

witness to help solve this case. Yeah, for sure. Her

memory of her attack was going to be what investigators

needed to solve this horrific crime. She needed to tell

them everything she remembered from the hours from ten pm

on March eleventh to eight am on March twelfth. Brittany

told the detective from the hospital that from seven pm

to close nine pm the night before that it was

just the two girls in the store. She then told

detectives that they had left at nine forty five and

that's when Brittany discovered that she didn't have her wallet.

So both women are turned back to the store at

nine point fifty and as the girls went into the store,

according to Britney, they were followed in by two men. Ugh,

that's terrifying. It's so scary. Yeah. The men were dressed

in all black and they had ski masks on. One

was taller and one was shorter, and that doesn't really matter,

but that's just how I described them. So you know

of what's going on, Brittany said, that the taller man

grabbed Jana by her hair and the shorter guy came

after Britney and the men began to attack both women.

They were attacked very violently. Brittany said that they were

wearing the ski masks, so she never saw their faces.

There was a lot of yelling, a lot of screaming.

They were running around the store being chased. There was god,

they ran into displays and all that stuff, like the

place was trashed. That's terrifying, one of the guys, like

a horror movie. It literally is so scary. Okay, ugh.

One guy just kept hitting Jana and both girls were

yelling for help. The door was closed, but they were

in like kind of a strip mall, so they were

hoping that this commotion would someone would hear. It's in

the heart of downtown, but that's at ten pm. There's

got to be people, right, But if it's the high

end mall areas don't always have like restaurants between the stores,

so if it's ten pm, everything might be closed. Yeah,

that sucks, ugh. So the guy that was holding onto

Brittany was just screaming at her and asking where they

kept the money in the store. Yeah, Janea was higher up.

I don't think she was in a maybe like a

a floor manager, but she I don't think she Obviously

she was a keyholder, but she wasn't like the assistant

manager or anything like that, right, But I don't know

if she had actual vault access, but they obviously had

register access. Yeah, so the registers had been broken into,

and the money that had been taken out of both tills,

it was about six hundred dollars in cash was missing,

which in the grand scheme of things, not a ton

of money, but I feel like that's a ton of

money in a department store. But yeah, I wonder if,

like so that they were alone from seven pm on.

Maybe the vault access person left at seven so it

was just what they made in cash post seven pm,

and the vault person was there the next day to

like read yeah yeah when yeah, what I say. Her

name was Rachel. Rachel. Yeah, so Rachel opened. So that's

what you're You're probably exactly right, And I didn't even

think about that. Yeah, That's how it was. When I've

worked at some retail places, it was similar where the

vault like the person that could drop the money off

or do the vault. Stuff left usually about an hour

before close here. Two hours wouldn't be that out of

the ordinary. Sure, and then like it's just you have

limited cash for change after that, Yeah, just keep whatever

either in there or like in a bag in a drawers. Yeah,

like a locked or something like that. Yeah, they probably

did leave it in the cash register in a place

like the that's staff to be perfectly yest. Yeah, that's

totally fair. Yeah, And obviously they'd been broken into, so

they were locked. It wasn't just like yes, the button

and they opened, so right. Yeah, So, as I said,

the store had been absolutely ransacked. The shelving was taken down,

clothes were on the floor, shoes were on the floor.

There was a bunch of those hanging racks that are

called they're called merch pegs, which I didn't know. That's

like they had no I didn't know they had an

official name, but no, it comes back. So they're called

the god Okay, merch pegs were on the ground and

stuff was absolutely everywhere, which indicated obviously that it was

just chaos. Brittany said that the man grabbed her and

threw it to the ground, and she had a pretty

nasty head wound, and she was dazed. And she had

a pretty deep wound on her hand from where she

was sliced. Pretty good, okay, she said wound, explained the

blood head wounds bleed like crazy. Yeah, she had like

a nice big gash on her forehead. According to Brittany,

the men attacking the two women were also yelling racial

slurs and verbally berating the two girls. Brittany is black,

Janea is white. This is yes, so this is what

remembers Jana or Jania. Oh it's Jana. I'm sorry. Okay,

did I just say Janea that one time? I hope no.

You said it a couple of times. Say her name

is Jana? Okay? You thought it was just like a

you said it wrong by accident, and then yes, you

said it a second time. I was like, wait, do

I have it wrong? No, her name is Jana okay. Also,

according to me, when I type it, it's Gina, So

I think I picked them all. But I was like, god,

damn it, it's j A y n A. Oh okay,

yeah Jana. Yeah. It's like wait, yes it is Jena okay.

So yes. On top of the chaos, they were yelling

racial slurs and braiding the two girls. According to the

autopsy report, Jana's clothing had been torn, and they had

been torn so badly that they exposed her vaginal area.

Brittany also confirmed to the investigators that on top of

the physical assault, they were also both brutally sexually assaulted

with clothes hangers. Oh my god, that could leave really

bad eternal damage. Brittany said that her attacker cut her pants,

cut her stomach, and cut across her chest as well.

So Britney's story went from just a robbery to now,

these two men off, these random men off the street

just saw these two beautiful, random women and decided to

attack them and sexually assault them. That's where we're at

right now. It does seem cut odd. Yeah, well, I

mean as her memory comes back, she's just starting to

remember more sure. And men do suck. So men do suck.

Men men be sucking? Yeah, I mean in all the

ways that you can think. Yes. So, based on crime

scene evidence and pictures, they were able to determine that

Britney's that Britney's story appeared to be true based on

the bloody footprints that were Based on the bloody footprints,

there was a very large sized shoe that was all

over the inside of the store. Oh sorry, shoe print.

You could also tell by the footprints that there was

a massive fight in the back of the store. Not

only were their bloody footprints, there also appeared to be

two different sized shoes, and one of them was a

size fourteen, which was much bigger than Jada and Britney's feet. Ye.

Although there was no cameras inside the Lululemon, the Apple

store next door did have a security system in place. Yeah,

there was a timestand a time stamped video that showed

two men, one taller, one shorter, dressed in all black,

walking in the parking lot behind the Lulu leven store

at eleven oh seven pm the eleven seven Like they

were leaving coming, They were leaving, leaving, Okay. These images

of the two men match Britney's description exactly and they

were walking away. This crucial information sparked a manhunt. It

terrorized the community and provoked a public outcry, and one

man's name kind of kept popping up as police canvassed

the area and witnesses. From witnesses statements, they were able

to put a name to someone that they thought they

should speak with. His name was Keith Lockett. Keith had

been in and out of jail, and it appeared that

he when he was not in jail, he was experiencing homelessness.

He would have very public outbursts, and according to these statements,

he would sometimes terrorize the people of Bethesda. And because

Keith was a black man living in Bethesda, he stood out.

And because of these things, he became the police's main

person of interest. From the security system, could they they

were dressing up? Could they tell of what race they were? No? Okay,

it was nighttime too, yep, okay. And because of all

these things, he became the main person of interest. And

that's when they realized that Keith was in a hospital

about six miles away from Bethesda, where you know, maybe

people weren't looking for him in connection to a murder.

Right When investigators got to visit Keith in the hospital,

they saw that he had blood all over his clothes

and he had a very swollen eye and his nose

was possibly broken. It was very swollen, so they couldn't

really tell at that moment, but he got beat up, Yeah,

it was pretty obviously he did get beat up. Yeah,

So was Keith involved in the murder? Yeah, stay tuned.

Oh boy. In terms of sheer injuries, this is the

greatest number of injuries that the investigators had ever seen

in a single case. There were at least three hundred

and thirty one wounds on Jane's body, whoa two hundred

and thirty of them were blunt for injuries caused by

things such as a hammer and a piece of metal

called a merch peg. Now, okay, merch peg Are those

the things that are in the wall. Yes, so okay,

it's not like the circle racks, That's what I was

thinking of, but like the things like hang in the

peg board things on the wall. Yes, you can readjust oka.

Yes that sucks so that. Yes, a merch peg is

a piece of iron that hooks into a bracket on

the wall that you can hand holes on. You can

find them at basically any star It's what they shirts

and all that stuff up. But yes, they are adjustable.

They come out fairly easily. Yeah. So the autopsy revealed

that the metal bracket was the main source of the

damage to Jana's body. You could take the merch peg

and you could physically place it into Jana's skull and

you could see where it left its impression. Oh my god,

three hundred times she was and thirty one. That's such

a rage thing. The autopsy also revealed at least one

hundred wounds to Jana's head. It also showed that a

minimum of six weapons were used in this attack, including

at least two types of knives and an assortment of

other tools. So they had to bring some No, they

were in the back room. It was like there was

like a small little toolbox that they had for well,

yeah they found that. Okay, sorry it I mean, I

don't know what they were used for, but I think

basically every retail store has some kind of toolbox. I

know we had it when we worked at the pottery Yes, yep,

we had. We had a toolbox ins at the running

store too. Yeah, just for whatever mayde I ever, know,

when you have to fix some like a display or something. Yeah,

I was because I haven't worked in retail and so long.

I was like, why would you need that, And I'm

like no, I definitely had like three of them at Kohal's. Yeah. Yeah,

well it's like you have a little toolbox at home.

Even like when I was by myself, I had a

little you know, they were like pink or purple or

something because my name is Pam girl. Yeah, but like, yeah,

I had hammer, I had a screwdriver, you know, I

had all that stuff. Yeah, will tape measure mm hmm.

So the investigators and the police on the scene were

absolutely stunned. And in this episode of Autopsy, as detectives

were interviewed as talking heads, you could see them like

their eyes start to well up as they remembered the

facts of this case. Can you even imagine walking into

that no, finding young women with like hundreds of wounds, Like,

oh my god, again, this random guy Ryan, Like my

heart breaks for him. He's, yeah, an investigator of any

kind of Oh. I like when I first heard it,

I was like he was probably just like on his

way to get a coffee or something like probably m

hm awful. It was determined that the length of the

attack was between ten and fifteen minutes, and it was

proven that Jana put up one hell of a fight

trying to protect herself. Sounds like it. She had injuries

on her hands and forearms. The autopsy also showed, based

on the blood and other things, that Jana was alive

for every single one of her wounds until the very

last one. Oh my god. Jana Murray's cause of death

was a knife that was found in the store during

the investigation. The knife had penetrated Jana's neck and severed

her spinal cord, and it killed Jana within seconds. Uh,

with all the other wounds. Yeah, oh my god. So

during the investigation they were able to bring in blood

spatter experts that told them more about the attacks. You

knoww I can cut everything, he says, Sorry, I'm just kidding.

I'm not going too but I could. It was found

that Jana was standing for a lot of the attack,

but at some point during the attack, she fell to

her knees before she fell to the ground. Oh my gosh.

So the investigation currently has the following going on. Just

for a little recap, two women attacked by two men

and two men seen on surveillance footage behind the store

after eleven pm. Keith Lockett banged up at the hospital

outside of the search radius. Seems pretty obvious what happened

to Jane and Brittany, doesn't it. Who's alone? Brebajo they

have caught him yet? Okay, I'm assuming you asked where

the second person is the short man. I guess we

don't actually know if keith I assumed that they recognized

the tall man. That was an assumption I made. How

dare you tall? Privilege? Obviously, I'm so sorry. While the

investigation continued, the forensic team was able to look into

the shoe impressions that were left behind in the blood

that was all around the store. Shoeprints can be as

individual as fingerprints and provide investigators with key evidence in

a complex case, and the shoe prints in the store

raised important questions. The shoe prints they were focused on

were the men's size fourteen shoe that covered the floor.

These prints didn't seemed to follow a logical path. They

were all over the store, but they stopped at both doors.

If the killer had blood on their shoes, why did

they stop at the door? You know? Did they just

all of a sudden take their shoes off and then

go off without shoes on? Fascinating? But the closer the

investigators looked into the prints, the more questions they had.

They were able to tell that there were shoe tracks

of a smaller shoe and the bigger tracks were on

top of them, and that didn't really fit the brutal

attack scenario. No, that's odd. So Lululemon is fancy enough

that if you buy a pair of jogging pants, they

personally fit them to you. If you're really yeah, if

you're going to do anymore, no, do you know, if

you're going to get your pants shortened, you're going to

have to put shoes on so that they make them

the proper length. So the store had men and in

shoes so in case someone showed up with the wrong

kind of shoe, they could put them on to get

them hemmed. Oh, and would you believe me if I

told you that a size fourteen shoe had the same

tread as a size fourteen shoe that had all the

marks around the store. I would believe you. Because this

is sounding more and more like an inside job, with

which I hate, but I want you to keep going.

I just like the thought that two guys broke in

and then they put on shoes cause the tech. Yes,

it's really weird and funny. Yeah, like fourteen is a

big shoe. Fourteen is a big shoe, so they must

have been clamping around if you know they're just put

on it. Well, if they put on the shoe over

their shoe. That'd be hilarious and weird. So discovering the

size fourteen shoe in the store, the layers of bloody shoeprints,

and the shoe prints ending at the door all began

to cast doubt on Britney's version of events. H Although

Brittany had been pretty forthcoming up to this point, the

evidence was starting to not match her story at all.

Uh huh. At this point, Brittany had been interviewed four

times in the week following the murder. Brittany was talking,

and every time she talked, her version kind of changed

a little bit. Can I ask a question you can have?

You said how many wounds Brittany had? Nope, interesting because

for one to have three hundred and thirty one, I

mean she obviously had the gash on her forehead right,

the one in her hand. Yeah, And then you said

something about she said that she got slashed, Oh sorry,

hit my desk, yep, but like on her chest and

her stomach and her her pants were cut and then

allegedly a clothes hangar was used. Yeah, that's what That's

what I said that Brittany said. It doesn't seem like

enough wounds for the other person to have such overkill.

Brittany hate Jana. Okay, I don't know what you mean. Okay,

you too. So Brittany was talking and every time she talked,

her version changed a little bit. But that can be

very common with someone who has suffered severe trauma. Yes,

absolutely so. Is that why her story kept changing or

was there just something she wasn't telling investigators, like did

she put on a size fourteen shoe over her shoes?

Of course, if she had actually been attacked, the trauma

would be unfathomable. Yeah. But then as investigators looked more

at Britney's injuries from crime, seeing photos and Britney's body

in the hospital pretty superficial, they noticed something weird. All

of Britney's wounds appeared to be superficial, which is in

stark contrast to Jana's injuries, as she had been horrifically mutilated. Yeah. Yeah,

like one one little head wound will cause a lot

of blood to be everywhere, but it's not a serious

injury necessarily. So why would one attacker brutally murder Jana

and the other one leave Brittany with minor flesh wounds?

Is Brittany dating Keith Lockett and Brittany didn't I love

why two attackers had such different forms of attack. Yeah,

that's a good question. How many weapons were used against me?

Maybe maybe here's maybe two separate guys just happened to see,

just happened to see two girls go into Lululemon, and

then they didn't actually know each other. They were on

different pages of what was happening. One was just there

for the robbery, one was there to kill. Sure, you

have to take that into account when I absolutely stories

about absolutely or even if they know no, Nope. Brittany's

head wound also raised out two investigators. She had kind

of a big gash on her forehead. If her forehead

had been bleeding and she was laying down on her

back for ten hours, gravity would have moved that blood

would have moved the blood backwards into her hair, and

the haire was fine, and there was no blood in

her hair, which raised more red flags to investigators that

Britney's injuries were probably fabricated in some way. And honestly,

this is the beginning of a cannon ball rolling down

the hill. Nope, I meanttion no ball. It was a

cannon ball. It's already big. It just keeps getting bigger,

you know, those cannonballs byby rolling and getting bigger, much,

getting bigger towards the cannon, towards the canon. Britney's story

of this attack caused terror and panic for the people

of Bethesda. Both Brittany and Jana's clothes had been ripped

in a way that appeared that they had been sexually assaulted,

and Brittney can from the sexual assault of the police.

She told police that she was assaulted with a close

hanger from the store, but when a say nurse examined Brittany,

there was no physical evidence of any attack and there

was zero trauma to her vagina. Yeah, and a close

hager would cause a lot of especially because there are

those wooden ones, like they're specific Lulu Lemon. They're the big, thick,

chunky wood hangers. Yes, I've seen those. Yes, Oh yucky, yep, yuk,

yuk yucky. Yeah. And it's really interesting too that she

named a clothes hanger because of the connotation that clothes

hangers have when it comes to women's anatomy. Mm hm,

so interesting choice. Yep. I agree. Investigators had to believe

at this point that maybe Brittany was making some stuff up. Also,

I said that a sane nurse did the examination. They

just had a specialist. I put saine in there because yeah,

makes sense. I wrote it. And then I was like,

that's not not actually what they said, but THEMA I

wonder if they were called sat nurses in twenty eleven.

That's when I was going to school for that, and

so like by the time I graduated, they were sane nurses.

But yeah, I don't know if in that four years,

if that's Oh yeah, the sane rule originated in the

nineteen seventies. Okay, so specialist say nurse. It was probably

some sort of sane trained Oh and I should say

sane stands for sexual assault nurse examiner for anyone that

doesn't know. So questions surrounding the attack are building and

building until the investigators come across a crucial piece of

evidence that essentially helped them solve this horrific case. The

night of the murder, Jana was driving her car as usual,

and since Brittany had called her to come back, instead

of Jina going back and parking in the back and

employee parking, she parked right in front of the store

so she could hop out, help her find her wallet,

and then get back in and get on with her. Yeah,

evening she was driving and Brittany was going to take

the Metro. Yes. Yeah, But the next morning, Jana's car

had vanished from the front of the store. The assumption

was that whoever did this to the girls had probably Yeah,

but it was in the front of the store, and

they saw the people at the back of the store

on the camera. Correct, Okay, And if the killer had

driven Jana's car somewhere, they'd probably taken it somewhere, probably

pretty far away, somewhere discreet, maybe somewhere to dispose of it.

But a local cop actually called the detectives a day

or two after the murder and said that they had

bought a Jana's car in a parking lot nearby the

night of the murder. It was just a couple of

blocks away from the Little Lemons store. Of course, that

makes sense, very subtle. The cop told the investigators that

he saw someone sitting in the driver's side of Jana's

car in the parking lot. In the parking lot that

night into the early morning of the murder. Once her

car was recovered, investigators did a forensic search and obviously

a visual search yeah, of the vehicle, and they found

a black Lululemon baseball cap with traces of blood in

the vehicle. Sorry, And traces of blood in the vehicle, okay.

Wouldn't surprise if the hat had traces blood on it also, okay? Yeah,

So they found the hat specifically a Lulu Lemon you know,

it's one of those running hats. Is not like an

actual baseball cap, they're like soft whatever. Yeah, and traces

of blood. Yeah. So obviously her killer had moved the car, yeah, yep,

and so something Larne, someone had moved the car. You

can't say it was the killer, yes, I can, okay,

And I'm gonna tell you why I can. Okay. As

they were doing that forensic surge of Jana's car, they

found traces of Britney's blood in Jena's car and on

the black Lululemon baseball cap. So Brittany was probably wearing it,

right mm hm cool. And so the detectives had asked

Brittany if she had ever been in Jana's car previously,

and Brittany said, no, never, don't even know what she drives.

What are you talking about Brittany. If you're not going

to be a good liar, don't do it. I don't

know what you mean. Okay, there's a very reasonable explanation

of why Brittany's DNA and blood was in that car.

So I'm gonna tell you. Please tell me. I'm so ready.

So if Brittany had never been in Jana's car, how

do her blood get there? In a surprise move made

by Brittany Norwood, she actually called the police station and

asked if she could come back in and talk to

detectives so she could just explain herself. She remembered a

little bit more of a story. This looks really bad,

so let me just explain what had happened. Okay oki.

She then modified her story again to tell detectives that

the two attackers had made her move Jana's car. Why

wouldn't you say that originally? That makes no sense to

She forgot, She forgot, she did forget. Okay. So have

you ever seen The West Wing? No? Okay, there's a

couple of characters in there. They Have you ever seen

Gilmore Girls? No? Okay? Well they the way that they

talk is like banter like in both of these shows.

But one of the things they do in the West

Wing that I we're watching it for the first time.

My husband seen it before, but I have not, so

I'm watching it for the first time. They a lot

of the dialogue is just the word okay, but they

say it with such different inflections that it makes it

its own sentence every time. So from now on, I'm

gonna try really hard to do what they do because

the things you're saying are very funny to me, and

I was like, yeah, okay. Also, we have been laughing

a lot. This is not a funny kid. We are

not laughing at what happened. We are laughing at possibly yeah,

Brittany being a bad liar, and I often end up

laughing in disbelief. So yes, yeah, So I just want

to make that very clear that we are not laughing

at what happened. We know that this is horrible, but

we are trying to find some light things about it.

And yes, Brittany was saying she's never been in a

car that she's clearly been in. It's funny to me. Okay,

So the bad guys made her move Jana's car. The

two bad guys told her that if she did not

move Jana's car for them that night, that they would

come back and kill Brittany the same way that they

killed Jana. That's why she had never mentioned it earlier.

She was scared. She was scared for her life, so

she did what she was told, and she had never

told the investigators because she didn't want to be killed.

Thank you. At that point, Brittany had said that she

had been attacked and was all bloody, but was forced

to move the car a few blocks away and then

walk back to the Lululemon by yourself. Yes, but at

that time of the evening, there would have been people

still walking around the streets of Bethesda. Bethesda, Bethesda, thank you. No,

But okay, I'm gonna say it again because that was

really bad. But at that time of the evening, there

would have been people still walking around the streets of Bethesda,

and no one had any recollection of seeing her, which

investigators knew that that simply could not be true. No,

because spoiler alert, there is a restaurant like right next

to Lululemon. No, was a ton of people were trafficking

the area at the time. Okay, I don't know if

I like the word trafficking in that use old walking. Yeah,

I'm sorry. There were people that were walking. It's like,

I don't want a highly populated area. I'm so sorry.

I didn't even think about it. There was a bunch

of people walking in that area. There are a lot

of people present to the area. Thank you. I don't

even live think Bethesa is like a bad No, that's

not even that's not at all what I meant. I'm

so sorry. During that walk back to the store, Brittany

could have stopped anyone on the street and asked for help.

She obviously didn't do that, and I'm not even sure

why she went back. She was alone. Yeah, so they

said you're gonna go huble blocks and your cork book,

and she said, yes, I am, And that's what she did, right,

I'll do it. And well, that's what she did. So

she follows directions. You know what, good for a sales person,

I suppose. Yeah. And on top of her not stopping

or asking anyone for help, no one questioned that she

was covered in blood. At this point, her pants had

been ripped, her her stomach had been cut, her chest

had been cut, she had a big gash on her head.

According to her okay, mm hmm. And when investigators asked

her how that could possibly be at ten pm on

a Friday night in the heart of Bethesda, how no

one saw her, she just replied, I never passed anyone

on my way back to the store, Oh, Brittany. So

during this newest interview with Brittany, the detectives left the

interview room and Brittany's brother, Chris came in and sat

down and talked with her. Since they were in an

interrogation room in a police station, the whole conversation was recorded.

Of course, it was Oh, Brittany, what are you going

to say now? During this chat with her brother Chris,

Chris asked Brittany if she had anything to do with

the murder. Had they gotten into some kind of fight,

like what had happened? Yeah, And that's when Brittany admitted

to her brother Chris that there had been a fight

between the two girls. And this changes everything. Yeah, it

does because if they were united front, that's one thing.

If they not, Brittany admitted that she and Jana had

a fight, So now the investigators have to ask the question,

was Brittany capable of killing her coworker and what could

have possibly escalated a fight to this magnitude, like what's

happening right now? Yeah, Like I said, the overkill, the rage,

that's insane. Before the investigators can be certain that Brittany

Norwood was the one to kill Jana Murray, they have

to ask the question who were the two men dressed

in all black that walked past the back of the

Lulu Lemon store at eleven o'clock on March eleventh. So

I was wondering if Britney is alone bribajo? Oh okay, yeah, okay,

I mean I don't keep going Okay, So once they

can positively identify the two people, they can move forward

with solving Jana's murder. Yeah, it turns out that these

two men that Brittany was able to potentially pin a

murder on for a short period of time, they were

dishwashers at an adjoining restaurant to the Lulu Lemon Store

who had just gotten off their shift and were heading home.

They had absolutely nothing to do with Jana's murder. They

were just two guys fucking check ass. Also people also,

I don't know and autopsy or like, no one answered

this for me. If Brittany even knew about them, about

the two guys walking by, or if she just said

that this is what happened and these two guys walked

by and were able to help her sell her story.

I don't hell of a coincidence. But what did they

show her? I mean, maybe they did show her the

surveillance tape after and they said are these the guys?

And she said those are the girls? I mean it

could be it could be. Yeah, I didn't find Did

she say and I don't know this. Did she say

if it was like a tall man and a short

man originally or did that come after she was, you know,

showing the video of I don't know man at a

short man. Yeah, so mister Keith, we'll get diff right now. Okay,

so I have had his last name now lock Lockett.

Thank you. So they were able to look more into

the forensic work and they compared blood and fingerprints found

at the scene to Keith Lockett, and none of his

blood or fingerprints matched. He just happened to have been

beat up the same night. Yeah, okay, yeah, I mean

he was experiencing homelessness. Yeah, and in that part of

the like it's it's really wealthy area, they're not gonna

want homeless people around. No, who knows, And he had

just been in jail. I don't think he was in prison.

I think it had just gotten out of jail. That

could have been something that happened in jail as well. Yeah.

Oh good point, good point. Keith was never involved in

any way. I'm actually glad I need too, Like he

wasn't further, like, this wasn't pinned on him, and I

didn't even know, like I when I before I started

doing this research, I didn't even know that he was

in like a suspect in any way, shape or form.

So and then when autopsy told me, I was like what,

I was like, they actually this bitch actually like and

they named him on autopsy that's coming. Yes, Wow, it

seemed that he had actually just had some kind of

incident and so he was eliminated from committing this crime.

He was actually eliminated as a suspect within three days

of the murder, but time as a construct. So yes,

it is yeah, and that probably felt like forever for

him to be like what yeah, like I wasn't what like, yes,

imagine I can in reaction with no other potential suspects

and Brittany tripping over her own lies. The investigators concluded

that Brittany Norwood was in fact the murderer. So now

investigators were able to piece together exactly what had happened

at the night that Jana met Brittany outside the store.

At nine to fifty pm, they entered Lulu Lemon to

look for Britney's I wrote tram pass. It's not a tram,

it's the train, right, yeah, the metro. Yeah, but the

metro Okay. They entered Lulu Lemon to look for Britney's

metro pass. They think that the assault started at ten

twelve pm, and it started with a blow to the

back of Jana's head with the merch peg okay, now

being wounded in this way, Jana would have been neurologically

compromised and unable to fight back to the best of

her abilities. Yeah, she's probably just scrabbling, yeah, they said.

They said on the autopsy episode that there's no way

this would have went down if Britney would't have like

come up behind her and attacked her from behind. Yeah. Yeah.

They were both very physically fit women, and I mean

even clearly Jana put up a fight for her own yeah,

like even having like a severe head trauma. Sheh. And

from that point on, the attack was merciless. Merci merciless,

was merciless. That doesn't sound right, That's right, okay, same again,

though maybe i'll merciless. It didn't. You just said it

a bunch of times around the It's definitely gonna say

it didn't. He if it still sounds terrible, it's it's

I think I mean now that now you got me

a question again, it's a word, all right, well right, okay,

obviously my scripts are never raw. No mercy is what

you're saying. Yes, And from that point on in the attack,

the attack was merciless and at least six tools were used.

The weapon that ultimately took Jana's life came from a

different part of the store, meaning that Brittany had to

leave Jana's body on the floor, go and get the knife,

and then return to kill her, which meant that this

was a very long and premeditated attack. Oh my god. Yeah.

And again they think the assault took ten to fifteen minutes.

That's a long time to be fighting us. Yes. After that,

Britney spent at least two hours in Jana's car, planning

her next move. Brittany had ten hours to make the

crime scene fit the story that she was going to

tell when the store was opened the next morning. So

she put on the big shoes. Brittany put on the

size fourteen shoe and stood in Jana's blood and then

walked around the store to create a trail of footprints.

I wondered, I did to make sense? She was walking

aimlessly and it almost looked like she was trying to

cover her own tracks, like it was. It was, Yeah,

it was like it was very like on top of another.

So yeah, man, in twenty eleven too, there have been

so many advances in forensics by that point, Like that

was when I was thinking about going to a master's theory. Yeah,

forensic science, Like there's a lot of stuff you could

do at that point. Yep, she didn't know either didn't

know or wasn't thinking of any of that. Nope. When

she was doing a lumineal testine was carried out and

they sprayed the sinks inside the Lulu Leven store to

see what they came up with, and the sinks lit up.

There had been blood all over those sinks and all

over the vanity in the bathroom. Yeah, she's probably trying

to clean up herself to make it fit her story. Yeah,

Brittany had cleaned up, washed her hair out, washed blood

off her hands, and off most of her body. The

direction of the cuts on Brittany's body went up, as

in like she was doing it to herself, so they

were clearly self inflicted. Like normally, I think they would

go in like a downward motion. She literally started and

went out yes, yeah, because that's what if you're doing

it to someone else, that's what your arm would do. Yes, yep, yeah,

you wouldn't go going up would feel very awkward. Yes.

And the position that Brittany was found lying, Sorry, And

the position that Brittany was found in, lying next to

the toilet in a pool of blood that she was

on top of also revealed her story to be false

because the back of her shirt had absolutely no blood

on it. The evidence. That evidence tells investigators that the

blood had already dried before she had laid in it. Yeah,

for sure. Also, my god, it's disgusting to think about. Okay.

They looked at the way that the blood was deposited

on the floor and it was in like circular swishing motions.

So they concluded that Brittany must have taken an item

of clothing from the store, rubbed it in Jane's blood,

then took it into the bathroom and wiped it down

on the floor in that swishing motion again so she

could lay down in it. Ew. Yeah, oh, I dislike

her a lot. This shocking discovery proved that Brittany thought

of no one but herself. She was calculated and evil. Yeah.

Brittany's final act in the morning of March twelfth was

to tie herself up with cable ties, first around her

ankles and then around her wrists, but loose enough so

that she could still put her hands above her head,

and then she laid down and waited for someone to

find her. Brittany had been able to fool detectives for

a period of time, but she could never outsmart the

forensic science. No exactly. Yeah, So on March eighteenth, twenty eleven,

Brittany's had been on the eleventh, twelfth, Yes, yep, and

she had at this time what had been interviewed four times,

you know, like it happened very quickly. But then her

brother was like, let's talk off the record, except for

the cameras that are recording us right now. It sounded

like Chris knew exactly what he was doing. Yeah. Yeah.

So on March eighteenth, twenty eleven, Brittany Norwood was charged

with the murder of Jana Murray, and she pled not

guilty and was remanded into custody. So, Amanda, what was

Brittany Norwood's murder for committing this horrific murder against her coworker?

Do you have any guesses her motive? Her motive? Did?

Did I not say? You said? What was her murder

for committing the murder? Oh? Sorry, Amanda? What was Brittany

Norwood's motive for committing this horrific murder against her coworker?

I'm going to guess, is something really stupid, like her

coworker realized she stole money from the register or something

like that. I have to tell someone these cases that's

less into true crime. I didn't know this story, but

I'm just trying to think of something stupid that would

not be were someone's life. But when you're in a panic,

you might think in that moment it is. Weirdly, it's

a little dumber than that. Even Oh god, Okay, surveillance

footage from inside the Apple store next to the Lulu

Lemon revealed terrifying details. Two people who worked at the

Apple store heard a commotion through the adjoining wall at

precisely ten twelve pm on the night of the murder.

They went up to the wall and they could hear voices.

They could hear a commotion, and they could hear arguing.

They knew that both the voices were women, and they

knew that to that they were fighting. They didn't do anything. No,

were they men? I don't know. The witnesses stated that

one of the women next door was asking questions, so

that was all they heard. And then I'm we're pivoting,

and so I'm going to tell you what happened. Brittany

was asking Jana to tell her what was going on?

What's going on? Please talk to me? So why was

Britney so desperately begging Jana to tell her? No, So

what was Britney so desperately begging Gina to tell her?

At nine pm that evening, Earlier that evening, when the

two girls were getting ready to end their shift, it

was time to do. It was time for the girls

to do a company policy called a bag check yep.

A bag check is when workers in a retail store

are about to leave. One coworker checks one person's bag,

and the other person checks the other person's bag. This

policy is put in place to keep your coworkers accountable

and to make sure no one is stealing money or merchandise. Yeah,

and it not every store does it, but I have

heard of that before. Oh I did it at Coohle's. Yeah,

we didn't have to do it at the running store.

But also all of us for runners, so we would

almost always buying stuff. We would ring each other up,

so like, oh yeah, reason to like check each other's

bags because we didn't really have bags, we just had

boxes of shoes, right, fair enough. So when so when

Jana looked in Britney's bag, she found a pair of

jogging pants that had been tucked deep in the bottom

of the bag, and it was obvious that they had

been stolen from the store. This silver a pair of joggers, yes, silver,

a pair of fucking pants. Oh. Brittany knew that she

had been caught red handed in that moment, and she

also knew that this was going that this was going

to have repercussions. I mean, yeah, you stole from the store.

Brittany had been previously moved from a different Lulu Lemon

store because her coworkers at the previous store had been

suspicious that she was stealing. So Brittany it it kind

of like it had to be somewhere in the area

or close enough. Yeah, but it just kind of appeared

that they were like, you're no longer working at this location.

You're going to the store transferring you. Yeah, so this

would explain her having to take the metro like into

the city. Yeah, absolutely, hmmm. So she was kind of

abruptly moved to the the Bethesda store, and before too long,

the girls at the Bethesda store got an inkling and

suspicion that Brittany was stealing from the store, but they

couldn't prove it at that point. Yeah. So when the

two women left work that night, after Jana had found

the jogging pants in Britney's bag, Jana immediately acted. She

got in her car and called Rachel, a store manager,

and they said, we caught her, We've got her. So

when Jana and Brittany returned to the store just minutes later,

that's when it clicked with Brittany that she was going

to lose her job. She knew it was only a

matter of time at this point. So did she really

lure Jana back to the store because she forgot her wallet?

Or was Jana there like, turn in all your stuff,

You're never coming back. I'd be surprised they'd do that

at ten pm. That's the only reason I'm asking they

Usually a manager would have to do it. Yeah, I

was gonna say at that point, Brittany still had a job. Okay, So,

but I don't actually know about a metro carter or wallet.

I don't know if she was acting she was, Yeah,

if she her first story was liable ever know. Yeah. So,

after doing more research into Brittany Norwood's background, the investigators

realized that this was not only the first time that

stealing had costed Britney something. During her senior year soccer season,

Brittany was caught stealing from her teammates and she was

kicked off the soccer team, and she lost her scholarship

and she had to move from New York State to Washington,

d C. Pretty what the fuck? And I think that

this is why the college in New York isn't named

because she was kicked off the team. Probably. Yeah, so

she was forced to move from New York State to Washington,

d C. I'm assuming she couldn't afford to live in

New York anymore, probably especially without her scholarship. Like, she

probably didn't finish school, I would assume. I don't think

she did. Okay, Shortly after or possibly during the move,

Brittany's boyfriend also ended their relationship and Brittany lost her

from Yeah. I think it was probably more like, yeah,

I'm not gonna keep dating. Yeah, that's really bad, And

a ton of people know, not only are you cut

from the soccer team, you're kicked out of school, right right, Yeah,

so Brittany lost her fucking mind. She started stalking him,

and sometimes she'd break into his house and when she'd

see him in public, she'd throw shit at him. All

people don't understand how bad stalking is. You and I

have talked about this. Oh, yeah, stalking leads to like

stalking behaviors, real ones, not like I'm stalking them online,

but like real stalking behaviors are an indicator of murder

at such a high percentage that it's insane. And people

just do not believe people when they say they're stalking

or they're being stalked, right, it's it. Yeah, it's scary. Yeah.

Almost everyone who had been close to Brittany Norwood had

been victimized by Brittany Norwood in some way. Jesus. According

to Brittany, her intent was never to kill Jana that night.

She just wanted to talk to her. You know, if

I just put the pants back, maybe don't report me.

But it was too late for Brittany, especially if she'd

stolen stuff before and this was just the last straw. Yeah,

it was too late for Brittany at that point. Jana

had already had already reported her to the manager. It

was out of Jana's hands. Yep, yep, yep. Realizing that

there was absolutely no way back for Brittany, that was

when she attacked Jana Marie on November two, twenty eleven.

After a six day trial, the jury took under one

hour to find Brittany Norwood guilty of Jana's murder. What

would her defensive have been? Insanity? Maybe I don't know,

or maybe she's still sticking to somebody else did it? Maybe? Yeah? Yeah.

She was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Yeah,

I would imagine. So Brittany Norwood choked back tears as

she apologized to her family and to Jana's family, but

it was like mom and dad or whatever you know's sorry,

I'm so sorry. And also Lauri Jana's family. That's like

the equivalent of I don't know that guy. He was

a new friend. Oh god, oh god, let's not go there.

The judge was unmoved by her tears, telling her that

her crime exemplified the worst of human nature. Yeah, and

the judge didn't believe that she was capable of rehabiliabilitation

and didn't deserve any eventual shot at freedom, the judge.

The judge even told her during sentencing, you mutilated this woman,

and with every blow you had the chance to think

about what you were doing. Yeah. In twenty fifteen, Brittany

Norwood appealed her case, stating that she that when she

went in for that LAFE interview, she has never read

her miranda rights but that but the Court of Appeals

stated that they were not going to overturn her conviction

because she asked for that interview right that would have

been voluntary, and she was able to leave at any time.

She was never kept there. Yes, So Brittany Norwood is

held at the Maryland Correction Institute for Women, having exhausted

her appeals in the years following her conviction, so she

will be there for the rest of her life. Yep.

That is the story of the murder of Jana Murray.

Do you have any final thoughts? This sucked? This sucked,

and I yeah, I think that that's just just suck.

It's people have a hard time believing that women are

capable of this stuff, which is probably why she was

given a lot of chances prior to this, you know,

Like so it's really scary. Also, I just like they

kept saying in the episode that like, how could she

have snapped like that? How like how It's like she

was not not snapping, but like how could she have whatever?

It's like she always had that in her. It was

it was just the matter of time if it wasn't

going to be her boyfriend. It was like, I don't

believe that she was ever not going to kill someone.

I don't know anything more about other episodes of Autopsy,

they showed a lot of crime seed footage of Brittany

because it was all fake, right, Yeah, but they showed

like that huge gash on her foreard. They showed like

her superficial wounds and all that stuff, and I was like,

I know that she's the killer, but like, what are

we doing here? So just I just want to be

I mean, of course it was yeah, yeah, so I

just want to be very clear that it's there. But

they they do also show a bunch of the crime

scene of the shoe prints, and that was really fascinating.

I really liked that because it's it. She literally walked

on top of her own that's crazy to think that

would work. Yes, like she clearly didn't. Yeah, she had

no plan obviously, Oh obviously. Well do you have any

final thoughts? Now? This just sucked. I knew there was

a Lulemon murder. I didn't realize that this was it

even when you started telling it. For some reason, I

thought it was down south, but there might be a difference,

which is No, I think it was a restaurant that

I'm thinking of that was down south. Okay, there was

some murder of like four people talking about the yogurt

shot murder. Yes, that's what I'm talking about. Isn't that

down south? I think that's also in your area. What

I think so okay, Oh, yeah, you're right. Yeah, Austin, Texas.

I think I was. I think I was getting them confused,

like the location. Yea of those confused. Oh there's a

documentary about it now. Yeah. It was literally just solved

with in the last year. Have you seen the documentary? Interesting?

I don't think I have any other thoughts. This sucked.

I'm glad they solved it as quickly as they did

and someone else didn't get pinned for it. Seriously, I

was very, like I said, I didn't know anything about Keith.

So when they presented Keith to me, I said, do

not blame that man. Yeah, and did not do anything wrong? Right? Right?

Do you remember me telling you about I wont to

forget his name, of course, the guy that did the

abortion shop or the abortion clinic bombings, plus the Olympic bombing.

What is his name? I can't think of it, Eric Rudolph, Yes,

thank you. But the Olympic Park bombing was initially blamed

by a guy named Richard Jewel. Do you remember that

part of the story. I do. That man's life was

like ruined. Yes, because of that. Also, if I remember correctly,

they never publicly apologized to that man, they didn't and

he died really really young from like heart failure. Good God, yeah,

really good. Great. Can I go into sources now? Yes? Sorry,

I'm sorry. I did take my medicine. I did, Sissy,

thank you for joining us this week. Hopefully it'll be

back next week because I don't have any other plan.

So yes, I'll be back next week. Okay, it'll be fine.

So the sources for this week. I read an article

and it was called Prosecutor. It was Brittany Norwood stole

merchandise before killing Jana Murray by Andrea Cannon and Jessica Hopper.

I watched an episode of Autopsy the Last Hours of

and that was called the Brutal Killing of Jana Murray,

which is season thirteen, episode nineteen. Thereine, how many seasons

of this show are there? Michael a lot? Okay, okay,

and I'm pretty sure that doctor Michael Hunter narrates them all.

Big fan of him. I hope he's not a piece

of shit because I really enjoyed him. Also, I read

an article in the Maryland Daily Record, CBS News, and Wikipedia.
