Cranston and Margot Lane face a distraught woman carrying a gun.
That is the opening situation in the Shadow Valley of
Living Terror, broadcast by Mutual on October thirteenth, nineteen forty six.
Brett Morrison stars as Cranston and his alter ego, The
Shadow in this blue coal presentation with a script by
Joe Bates Smith. As the plane and its passengers draw
nearer to that isolated valley, Cranston must deal with the
immediate danger at hand and the unsettling reports connected with
the country below. This is episode number two hundred seventy

Speaker 2: Who Knows what Evil works in the Hearts of Men?
A Shadow, now.
Speaker 3: Now the Carry Salt Company, producer of the best in
salt for every farm and home, News brings to this
rulling adventures of the Shadow, the hard and relentless fight
of one man against the forces of evil. These dramatizations
are designed to demonstrate, possibly to old and young alike,
that crime does not pay. In just a minute, today's
exciting adventure will begin a first the word about Salt
one of mankind's most precious possessions. In early times, salt
was considered so valuable it was used in place of money.
But not even the rich man in those days had
salt as fine as you can have every day just
by asking for carry salt at your favorite store. It
pays to get this modern salt. For carry is different.
Carry salt is deepenetrating, Yes, sir, Carry salt is different.
Carry salt is deep penetrating. It always carries the flavor
because it's extra refined, goes deep down into the heart
of foods. Get carries tomorrow in the wround white box
with a bright red band either Riot eyes or plane.
But now the Shadow, the shadow who aids the forces
of law and orders in reality. Lamont Cranston, wealthy young
man about town. Years ago in the Orient, Cranston learned
a strange and mysterious secret, the hypnotic power to cloud
men's minds so they cannot see him. Cranston's friend and companion,
the lovely Margot Lane, is the only person who knows
to whom the voice of the invisible Shadow belongs. Today's drama,
The Valley of Living Terror.
Speaker 2: And we made it. Margot and just in time.
Speaker 4: Thank goodness, Lamont, I only hope our plane has enough
gas to get us to the nearest landing field.
Speaker 2: Look down, Margo, entire jungle village is covered with rubble
and stone from the avalanche.
Speaker 5: It was nature's own way of wiping that horus in
the face of the earth.
Speaker 2: It has been a nightmare, hasn't a darling.
Speaker 6: I never dream when we took a vacation in South
America that would be flying down there to the jungles
of Africa.
Speaker 2: Well, I couldn't refuse Alice Turner when she asked me
to search for her missing David. After all, David Turner's
one of the foremost scientists of our day.
Speaker 5: I suppose the fact that you just received your pilot
license and chiefly said plane had nothing to do with.
Speaker 2: Your dicasions, was al Isaiah did influence me a little.
Speaker 7: All the month.
Speaker 5: I never want to go through a thing like that again.
That jungle valley down.
Speaker 8: There, the heat, it was like the whole world.
Speaker 2: Closing in on Well, we're out of a darling, both
of us see high in the air.
Speaker 8: No you are not safe, mister Craston.
Speaker 5: No, it's the native girl, Maria. She wants to stir
away and our plane.
Speaker 4: Put down that revolve and Maria, I give orders now,
mister Creston, get away from those controls.
Speaker 2: You crazy Maria will crash.
Speaker 4: I want plane to crash, to kill you and miss Lane. Yes,
and my shadow too, Shadow, Yes, I know you are shadow.
Speaker 2: Mister crash, Maria. If this plane crashes, you'll die too.
Speaker 4: I have no models are to live now. My master
man I love is dead. All I want is revenge.
Speaker 8: Step away from those controls or I will shoot miss
Lane first. You would not like that. Step away your
eyes shoot all.
Speaker 2: Right, Maria, leave the controls, but only long enough to
explain what the who you are?
Speaker 7: The plane is getting out of control.
Speaker 2: Listen to me, Maria, you don't know the true story
of what happened.
Speaker 8: I know the man I loved was great scientist.
Speaker 2: Your drove that man you loved with a charlatan and
in sank, stupid pretender, Maria.
Speaker 5: The monk was cracking the ground.
Speaker 2: Maria, I knew was a fake the moment we talked
to him. I knew it, even from what you told us.
We saw you there in the jungle clearing, watching our
plane come to a less.
Speaker 6: Mister mount is a woman standing there.
Speaker 4: In the jungle, peering watching out plane land Thane, looking
almost beautiful.
Speaker 2: Yes, I see Maroon.
Speaker 5: I wonder what a girl like that could be doing
in this horrible jungle valley.
Speaker 2: Come on, let's talk to it.
Speaker 9: Hell, hello there, who are you?
Speaker 8: What are you doing here?
Speaker 2: I'm the Mount Clemston. This is Margot Lane. We are
searching for a great scientist, David Turner, an American. The
reason to think he may be in this jungle.
Speaker 8: No, no, David Turner, No American here, No American here.
Speaker 2: You to learn to speak English.
Speaker 8: I went to a school.
Speaker 2: You went to school, and did some American come here
and teach you to speaker length.
Speaker 8: He is not here.
Speaker 2: You don't mind if we search them.
Speaker 8: Don't move, don't go near our village or you will
find this terror.
Speaker 2: I know I have seen obviously David Turner is here.
You wouldn't be trying to keep him away from the village.
We've seen the Navy's huts in the air. Uh.
Speaker 8: Well, Turner is here, but he is not in the village.
Speaker 4: Our home is an old castle. Just out child, let's
just the voice of the mountain. Look high above his
jungle rally.
Speaker 5: Those mountains Lamont.
Speaker 8: They're like a gigantic places a grinning old man.
Speaker 4: Yes, we have a legend here that says when the
god of the mountains is angry, the great rocks will
fall into the village and destroy all that is there.
Speaker 2: That's only a legend.
Speaker 8: No, it has happened once before.
Speaker 2: That's a terror you've mentioned.
Speaker 8: No, the secret and the Religi is far more terrible
than that.
Speaker 2: Now, will you take us to mister Turner. Please very well.
Speaker 8: Follow me, mister Priston, into the jungles. But remember I
warn you, I warn you of the terror that lies ahead. Oh,
we're getting deeper and deeper into the jungle.
Speaker 5: Are you sure she knows how she's taking.
Speaker 4: I heard you, miss Lane, I know very well where
I am taking you.
Speaker 2: I don't like miss mnd easy darling will be there
soon though.
Speaker 5: The branches, the bushes and preso closing it in imprison though.
Speaker 2: What's that tropical bird? I guess? But it's so big, Yes,
the bushes, the flowers, everything in this jungle seem extraordinarily big.
Speaker 8: This is a very fertile valley. All living things grow large.
Speaker 10: Dear very Loarge, we are here.
Speaker 2: What is this place? There's no castle here.
Speaker 8: No, and you will never see our castle. It's a trap,
a graveyard for you.
Speaker 10: I leave you now.
Speaker 4: You will try to find your way out, but there
is no key. You will never find your way out
of this young.
Speaker 2: Wait, wait, Maria, he's gone. Where did you go this way?
I think through these big bushes.
Speaker 5: Something's happened to her. Some animal is something horrible must
be attacking us.
Speaker 2: Coming told us it's not an animal a man.
Speaker 7: Let me go.
Speaker 9: You are steep my art very well. Let us be
a less Maria. No more that picks behind my back.
A good thing.
Speaker 2: I follow you.
Speaker 9: Please forgive little Maria. She is so impulsive, shall we say?
I am David Turner too.
Speaker 2: Apparently overheard our conversation.
Speaker 9: Yeah, you have come to take me home.
Speaker 2: Your wife tell us as just to find you my wife.
Speaker 11: Oh yeah, dear Alice is well.
Speaker 5: I hope.
Speaker 8: Please take us out of this jungle.
Speaker 2: Forgive me.
Speaker 9: The heat is bad. If you are not accusto into her,
I will take you to my castle, hope, and let
me show you. No matter what Maria has said, your
presence here at this time is most welcome to me, Yes.
Speaker 2: Most welcome.
Speaker 9: Here are your rooms on the second floor of my castle.
Speaker 8: He seems to follow this brisk Miss Lake, stay in
your room.
Speaker 9: Neither you nor mister Cranston are to leave until I
need you.
Speaker 2: What do you mean by that that we're prisoners?
Speaker 9: Oh no, no, my guests, mister Cranston, but you are
not to leave.
Speaker 5: What is this? What is this secret terror in the village?
Maria Smoker? Where are the other people?
Speaker 9: We four are the only human living here.
Speaker 2: Look here, Turner, I don't know your game. We came
here to take you back home.
Speaker 9: Instead, you stay here with me.
Speaker 2: What do you think you're going to.
Speaker 9: Do with us, mister Cranston. You wouldn't believe what I'm
going to do. You have no idea how helpful you
both will be.
Speaker 5: In my words, the man, what's the matter with him?
The Great David Tenner acts like a mad man.
Speaker 2: He's not David Turner. What a man's an impostor? First
of all, Margo, he doesn't get the description his sister,
Alice gave me.
Speaker 5: His sister, I thought you told tannerd with.
Speaker 2: His mone I did? I tricked him purposely? Morgo You
saw how he readily agreed. Alice was his wife. Devid
Turner was never married.
Speaker 5: You've never seen a picture of this man were looking
for No, it.
Speaker 2: Is one of his eccentricities. He hated cameras. But his
sister Alice described him completely.
Speaker 5: But if this man isn't Tanner, w re could the
real scientist be He's.
Speaker 2: Here somewhere dead or alive. Or this man couldn't have
known about him and taken his name Mago. There's one
place he might be.
Speaker 5: It's the village.
Speaker 2: Yes, No, how carefully he and Maria both kept us
away from the village.
Speaker 5: He said, we were the only humans here. What could
be living in the village Tomorrow?
Speaker 2: I don't know what I'm going to find out.
Speaker 5: He told us not to leave his room.
Speaker 2: You won't see me leave, Margot, not Cranston. But the
invisible Shadow will visit the village tonight. Village. Yes, this
is the same jungle village we saw from the plane.
Here the huts, The shadow moves among them unseen. These
hats seem to be more like nests, webs, some like
mounds of earth. Seems to be no life here. Wait,
something is calling out of one of the nests, like
little huts.
Speaker 4: It's true.
Speaker 2: Creatures calling out of the hats. Are no human thing,
other others coming out of nest, out of the mounds
of earth, out of the crown a thousands of them,
hundreds of them, in human, horrible creatures. This is credible.
This is the Valley of living terror.
Speaker 8: Oh mon, it's you dying, yes, Margot?
Speaker 5: What's wrong?
Speaker 8: Did the shadow go into the ground, Charlie?
Speaker 7: What did he see?
Speaker 2: Nothing, Margot?
Speaker 7: The mark?
Speaker 5: What's wrong with you? Mar What did the shadow find out?
Tell me, you've got to.
Speaker 2: Tell me, all right, I'll tell you what I can, Margot.
There were creatures, living, calling creatures, giant creatures, hundreds of them.
That's how horrible. I think I know now why this
man is keeping us here, Yes, Margo, apparently he's just
been waiting for two human beings like us, so that
he can go one step further in his terrible experience.
Speaker 3: We'll return to the shadow in just a moment, but
right now it's Winner's time again. Here are the winners
and the carry saw contests for the weekending September twentieth.
The beautiful one hundred dollars seventeen juwel Harmon gold Risklatch
goes to each of them. The ladiest Ristwatch goes to
missus I E. Green of fifty seven thirty nine Clemmons,
Saint Louis. She suggests that Carry's table salt be used
to queen nursing bottle nipples.
Speaker 2: Just shake the few grains.
Speaker 3: Of carry salt into each nipples, she says, add water
and squeeze the solution through the small holes. Sounds like
an easy answer. That it's been a vexing problem. And
here's the suggestion that wins the man's watch. It's from
mister Albert A. Aldrich of Emily, Missouri. He solved the
problem of nights in his poetry house by spraying the
house with a strong solution of water and Carry's salt.
The knights disappeared and they haven't come back. Congratulations to
both of the winners and folks. Ifew want to win
one of these beautiful watches, listen for the easy contest
rules later in this program. Meanwhile, remember there's a fine
carry salt for every farm and home use. There's deep
kindig reading, carry table paw, Gary's mineral supplement Thought, Gary's
meat curing thought, and many others. Always look for the
white bag barb door cotton with a bright red band.
But Now back to the Shadow.
Speaker 6: Amount Cranston Margot Lane, searching at Jungle Valley for a
missing scientist, have been taken prisoner by an impostor who
claims he is the famous David Turner.
Speaker 2: They seek.
Speaker 6: Cranston has the Shadow has just discovered that the impostor
is planning to use them as part of his terrible experiment.
Speaker 5: La Mark. We've got to get out of here.
Speaker 2: Just as soon as we can find the real David
term The ten is.
Speaker 5: Probably dead, Lamont. This man wouldn't let him.
Speaker 2: Live, perhaps Margol, perhaps he's hitting him somewhere in this
old castle kept the prisoners we are kept. I'm going
to this man.
Speaker 5: He wouldn't tell you anything.
Speaker 2: I know that, darling, But I think perhaps the s
had all my flight in the minto a confession. Well,
what is that my VARs?
Speaker 9: My glory is ming Lars, Polem's law, the other laws
forumn Lawer.
Speaker 2: What pick is this? No wind to blow them off?
Speaker 9: That mental hair? No wind?
Speaker 2: My friend has touched them, only the dead invisible hand
of a gross who laughs?
Speaker 9: Whose white is that?
Speaker 2: Voice of David Turner speaks from the grave, voice of
David Turner, the man that you killed I didn't.
Speaker 9: I didn't kill him.
Speaker 2: So you admit you or not David Turner? After all?
Speaker 9: Very well, very well, I admit it, But I didn't
kill Turner.
Speaker 2: Where is he hidden? Then?
Speaker 9: I won't tell no one who know until my experiments
are complete, experiments.
Speaker 2: The real David Turner started? Is that why you followed
him here?
Speaker 7: No?
Speaker 9: My experiment different, far more unusual than why.
Speaker 2: Have you taken Turner's name? That is my cleverest trick.
Speaker 9: If my experiment should fail, I shall disappear, leaving the
real David Turner here to take the blame for the
terror spread in his valley. You're lying to me, I'd
be a fool to kill him. I've kept him alive,
had him watched over day.
Speaker 2: And night, had him watched over. Thank you, my friend.
You've just told the shadow what he came here to
find out? Marco, quickly tell and get me essential paper
from my bag.
Speaker 5: What did the shadow find out from that man?
Speaker 2: Way to find David Turner? The fact that he's still alive, Margot,
Thank you, darling. How can you find he said? He
was keeping him watched over? And one other person in
this castle who'll be here besides him?
Speaker 5: To do that, Maria.
Speaker 2: Yes, Maria, you must know where he skipt.
Speaker 5: What's that ahead?
Speaker 2: You're joining the picture of David Turner from the description
his sister gave me. Shadow will take it to Maria
to prove to her that this is the real scientist.
You'll have to hurry, jowing experiment Juan.
Speaker 5: Yes, that madman might come back any minute.
Speaker 11: Hurious, I can, Darling, who is this the shadow?
Speaker 2: Maria?
Speaker 4: For you?
Speaker 5: What do you want you do?
Speaker 2: It's a shadow? Can save you, Maria, save me. The
man you call your master is not David Turner. Maria
is an impostor.
Speaker 5: He is David Turner.
Speaker 8: We have impostor locked up.
Speaker 2: No, Maria, the man you hold prisoner is David Turner,
the real scientist. Look look upon this portrait. This is
a picture of David Turner. Is he not the man
you'll keep prisoner here?
Speaker 5: I don't know.
Speaker 8: I never see him. He's kept in dungeon cells. There
is only a small flat in the door where.
Speaker 10: I push food through.
Speaker 2: Take this picture, Maria, and go to the one man
who can help you, the man Prinsler will prove this
is the real David Turner. With you, Maria to Turner's
dungeon cells. Compare this picture with the face of the
man you think insane. Then you'll discover your master is
an impostor. Is this right, Maria? Is this the way
of the dungeon cells.
Speaker 8: Yes, mister, don't step to the castle.
Speaker 2: Come down then quickly.
Speaker 10: I have brought you here.
Speaker 8: Unlike the proved strange voice I.
Speaker 4: Heard folk live.
Speaker 2: Be careful with that kennel, Maria. This dungeon floor is
covered with straw.
Speaker 8: This stone door that leads to myself, that this little
slot through which I give him food.
Speaker 2: Open the door rear. Where's the key?
Speaker 8: No, has no key, only heavy boots.
Speaker 2: Bring the candle inside the cell, Maria, the.
Speaker 8: Mad person not lying on the floor.
Speaker 5: I see.
Speaker 2: Look, Maria, here's face and at this picture here.
Speaker 4: Yes, you're all right.
Speaker 2: Same man unconscious. Wait, he'll carry him. No, No, I
don't let you spoke, man, I love, come back you
treak me.
Speaker 8: No, I like you in you are the shadow crossed
on you.
Speaker 5: Take me to bring your here.
Speaker 4: Ah yeh. I put this straw slut in the door,
more and more and more, and put that candle flame
to them.
Speaker 8: Your diamonds alas down.
Speaker 4: You'll burn alive into themselves with real son.
Speaker 5: The world will never know my mond tying to.
Speaker 7: Fath why doesn't my mon come back? This waiting is terrible,
that experiment.
Speaker 5: I was feeling that madman's going to walk in here
any minute. I'm going to find them on them so
dark out here in the hall. The another door down at.
Speaker 7: The end of the corner.
Speaker 5: I shouldn't be doing this. I guess I'm getting further
and fetter away in my own room. If one of
those creatures is behind that door, honey, does not look
that doesn't seem to be any s over there. Oh
it's nothing that a patch of moonlights and that little window.
Speaker 7: I guess I'm learning my nerves.
Speaker 9: No, I don't think you are mislad.
Speaker 2: Were you looking for someone?
Speaker 5: What are you doing here?
Speaker 9: I might ask you the same question, after all, this
is my laboratory, labritory. I will switch on the lights
and you can see for yourself. And I heard you
coming up the corner there. I took the liberty of
crashing the lights and waiting for you to walk through.
Speaker 5: Master.
Speaker 8: I cannot find her, slain girl, not in her room.
Speaker 7: Oh did you get here?
Speaker 9: You very convenient play found the laboratory for herself and
just when.
Speaker 5: We needed it to. Where's Lamont? What have you done
with him?
Speaker 9: You don't have to worry about Cranston mistake right now.
I think you should be more concerned with our little
expendent experiment.
Speaker 2: Yes, look, miss Lane.
Speaker 9: Over there in the corner, just to the left of
the operating table.
Speaker 5: A cage. What's all this about?
Speaker 9: In that cage you will see one of the inhabitants
of our village.
Speaker 11: Miss Lane.
Speaker 9: I think you can already hear it.
Speaker 5: I don't know what you're talking about.
Speaker 9: You will when I removed the cover from the cave,
she says. Now, I undo this trap that holds the cover,
and take and take the cover from the cave and
let you see what's inside. Wow, you know this slave's
at moments those creature quickly, Maria, prepare the instruments sat
for the TENA.
Speaker 4: No, please listen thunder mountain God, would I tell you

me Master, one person left to.
Speaker 9: Lie, have no time to lose. I frightened very well,
you little holy experiment will be completed by me alone.
Speaker 2: Stop this hideous experiment. The end of your world has come.
Speaker 9: The y, the prick, Maria, the shadow again it is constant.
He won't stop at this time.
Speaker 8: No matter couldn't be crest.
Speaker 5: He is dead and flame.
Speaker 7: It is God of the Mountain.
Speaker 2: Yes, this is the voice of the mountain speaking in
tones of thunder. Toyo, you shall atone for your sin.
Speaker 9: Now I can live live. Three A new kind of rain.
Speaker 8: Like this suck the monsters? Did this happening again?
Speaker 5: Another of a line?
Speaker 2: Yes, the rock mountain is hauling, and a thousand other
rocks will come crashing down into the valley, swept by
the rain, wind and storm, wiping out whatever your domain.
Speaker 9: Of chin and living terror, Oh mount in this movie

exactly the way it happened. Now will you put down
that gun and listen to reason?
Speaker 5: The Marta Prae is going to cry.
Speaker 8: I left you to burn alive in that show, how
did you escape?
Speaker 2: I saw you're trying to lock me in that cell
with David Turner. I became the shadow and slipped out
with you. You only thought my voice was coming from
inside the sales, not the controls. Before we tell Maria,
let me save us all.
Speaker 8: You will never tell the world my muster was a
madman and a fake.
Speaker 2: Well already knows the truth.
Speaker 8: Maria.
Speaker 2: Look under this planket.
