The Calin Matter. Episode five thousand, six hundred one. Bob
Bailey stars as freelance insurance investigator Johnny Dollar, working in
Los Angeles on the reported death of insured man Eddie
Caylin in a burning automobile. In this installment, Dollar follows
leads that complicate the apparent accident and raise questions about
the identification of the victim. Les Crutchfield wrote the script
with Jack Johnstone directing and producing. Virginia Gregg, Lucille Meredith,
Alma Lawton, Gloria Blondell, Howard mcneer, Harry Bartel, Peter Leeds,
and Byron Cain are heard in the cast. And now
we return to the original broadcast from Hollywood.
Speaker 2: It's time now for.
Speaker 3: Johnny Dollar. This is Ranossa. I like police. Oh, hi
is Sergeant any Luck? Nothing?
Speaker 4: This top o' leanley. Boy's been in jams before. He's
a tough cookie, and we don't scare him a bit.
Speaker 3: What's his story?
Speaker 4: Says he was walking through the courtyard of the apartment.
That's when you jumped him. From the bushes, claims he
thought it was a stick up and fired that shot
at you in self defense.
Speaker 3: What was he doing there in the first place.
Speaker 4: Calling on a girl friend only she'd given him the
wrong address. We can hold him off a night for
carrying a concealed weapon, but that's about all, Johnny. He'll
make bail in the morning.
Speaker 5: Well fine, let him. Things aren't ending up and it's
got him worry. He's afraid he's being double crossed, and
he's fighting mad about it on the loose.
Speaker 3: Maybe he'll be a help to us. Maybe he can
find Eddie Kaylyn.
Speaker 4: What are you talking about? Eddie Kaylyn's downtown in the
mark on a marble slash.
Speaker 3: Sergeant want to bet.
Speaker 2: Tonight and every weekday night? Bob Bailey in the transcribed
Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed Expense Acount
America's Fabulous His freelance insurance investigator.
Speaker 5: Oh's truly Johnny Dollar? From Special Investigator Johnny Dollar location
in Los Angeles to the home office Trinity Mutual Insurance
Company Limited, Hartford, Connecticut, assignment to Kaylan matter expense account continued.
I was following a hunch, one that had started when
Sergeant Reinosa said the police found the door of the
Kaylin apartment locked on the night of Eddie's death, locked
with a key, And now the hunch was stronger. The
way Leanley had acted, tamp o' Leanley, the gambler from
whom Eddie had won sixty thousand dollars that night, things
like Lala Kaylen had said about her husband. They all
added up, but it was still only a hunch, not proof.
Speaker 3: And proof I had to have and.
Speaker 5: At the moment the only chance I could see of
getting it was to backtrack on Eddie Kayln, his hangouts,
his contacts, his missing friend Pete Steimer, his movements during
the hours before his car was found blazing at the
bottom of a canyon, and Pallas Verdes.
Speaker 3: In a way, what I had to do was bring
him back to life.
Speaker 5: Expense account item six fourteen dollars and ten cents transportation
two and incidentals at a dim, little hole in the
wall bar out on Santa Monica Boulevard called the Cafe Alowenes.
It was an out of the way clip joint dedicated
to the mood Caribbean, complete with palm fronds, drinks and
coconut shells and a lovely little hostess with a beautifully
developed and well rounded Latin accent.
Speaker 6: You would like a nice table, amigo.
Speaker 5: Oh, this one's fine, but I would like a nice
talk sit down, honey, let's get.
Speaker 6: Acquainted, well, maybe for a few minutes.
Speaker 3: My name is Tetita, of course, what else? I'm Johnny Dollar.
Speaker 6: That's a funny name.
Speaker 3: Oh I'm a funny guy.
Speaker 6: Will will you buy me a drink?
Speaker 3: Is that the gimmick here?
Speaker 6: Gimme?
Speaker 3: Or what do you order?
Speaker 5: A champagne cocktail? See for which I paid two bucks?
It's made with ten cents worth of so it turn
you get a one dollar kickback? Isn't that the way
it's played?
Speaker 3: Are you with it?
Speaker 6: Bye? Squad?
Speaker 3: I forget it, relaxed. Hey, look, I'll do better than
buy you a drink. What are you doing after you're through here?
Speaker 6: No? No days.
Speaker 7: When I quit work here, I go straight home, amigo,
and I live with my mother.
Speaker 5: Oh well that's a very good arrangement. Cheapen that way
for both of you. But here's ten bucks. What I
want from you is some information about a customer who
comes in here.
Speaker 3: A lot are used to anyway?
Speaker 7: Eddie killing you know you are not the police, or
you would not give me ten dollars just for talking.
Speaker 6: Sure, I know Eddie? What you want to know about him?
Speaker 3: When did you see him last?
Speaker 6: On Thursdays, the day before he was culled.
Speaker 3: How did he act? What did he say? Anything out
of the ordinary?
Speaker 7: He said, he loved me madly, passionately, devotionally, and if
I do not love him too, he will kill himself,
just like ordinary. He was lying, of course, but he
always was such exciting to listen. Then you buy me
champagne cocktail and borrow from me the money to pay
for it.
Speaker 1: I got a boy, kare he was how you say
he was the most?
Speaker 3: Yeah? How long was he in here that night?
Speaker 6: Ken starry? One hour?
Speaker 3: Perhaps by himself?
Speaker 6: No, it is amigo with Pete.
Speaker 3: Pete Steimer. Have you seen Pete since then?
Speaker 8: No?
Speaker 6: I do not think nobody has seen him.
Speaker 3: What do you think has happened to him?
Speaker 6: Who knows?
Speaker 7: Maybe he's too sad for Eddie dying, so he is
hide out someplace or by himself.
Speaker 3: Well, that's the theory.
Speaker 5: Did any seem worried that night? All scared? No, not scarce,
nothing especially on his mind?
Speaker 7: Apparently No, just like always just like Eddie.
Speaker 3: You know, no I never met him.
Speaker 6: Then then why you ask this question?
Speaker 3: Oh, just a routine business matter. What about women?
Speaker 6: Women?
Speaker 3: Yeah, other girlfriends of Eddies and next to you.
Speaker 6: Of course, oh next to me. With Eddie, every girl
was first.
Speaker 3: What about the nightclub here? Any of them come in here,
work here?
Speaker 7: Oh Eddie was too smart for that. In each one place,
only one girl that way, no trouble. Eddie was smart, Yeah,
he was the most.
Speaker 5: What about girls and other places around town? Do you
know any of them?
Speaker 6: I do not know anybody.
Speaker 3: What you've heard rumors?
Speaker 7: Well, there is a place which is called a breath monkey.
Speaker 3: Ah.
Speaker 6: Yeah, they have.
Speaker 7: Girls there which how you say it, they take off
some clothes and go jump around with the music.
Speaker 6: Strippers whyes, steppers will.
Speaker 7: Somebody has always make jokes with me about one of
those steepers. They say Eddie has have the big thing
with They think to make me mad, But it's no
difference to me. I know how it is. Do you
know the girl's name, the very silly name which she
has make up is Marty Midnight, Marty Midnight.
Speaker 6: She has black hair like me, but mine is natural black.
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, sure, I figured as much. It's very beautiful,
which is classies.
Speaker 5: Johnny, Well, thanks for some pleasant conversations.
Speaker 7: You are leaving now, yeah, but maybe you will come back.
Speaker 3: No, I wasn't planning to.
Speaker 6: At one o'clock, I am through working.
Speaker 5: If you will come back, no, no, we wouldn't want
to worry your poor old mother, would we keep on waiting?
Speaker 6: Up?
Speaker 7: What are you talking about? My mother is leaving Havana, Cuba.
Speaker 5: Expencer count Adams seven twenty three dollars and four forty
cents more transportation and some more of those incidentals, this
time at the Bras Monkey. N That name had come
up twice now, Eddie Kaylen's widow had mentioned it first,
so I figured I'd better have a look at it.
The Allowenas had been a fairly quiet place, dimly lighted
with a big play on that Mystery of the Jungle routine.
But the Brans Monkey was a pony of a different tint.
At the Brans Monkey they let down their hair and
really live. The chorus line was on and at it
when I arrived, And strangely enough, the girls were all dolls,
pert young, lively, seven of them left or right.
Speaker 3: When I wanted the seven had midnight black hair.
Speaker 5: I leaned against the service bar and waited for the
bartender to come down out of the clouds and notice me,
and he finally did.
Speaker 9: Oh sorry, Buster, just couldn't see you for looking at you.
Speaker 5: Oh that's all right. Who'd bother with a customer at
a time like this?
Speaker 9: Another odd lover? The man man, I'll tell you true.
Speaker 8: There is the cream of the crop, seven shots, the
Ple eightes, brother, the absolute up top zenith of the
entire echusiastic Firmaly, well, you'll have to.
Speaker 3: Drink scotch overs checko.
Speaker 9: I read a lot.
Speaker 8: That's where I get all them big words. Always try
to better myself.
Speaker 9: Get ahead, man, that's the table.
Speaker 3: Yeah, so I've heard so.
Speaker 8: I read all the time, and I got a system
to a shortcut.
Speaker 5: You know all them books you sing around, you know
what they're full of, well, opinions, very words.
Speaker 8: And you know where they get them from the Dictionary.
So I don't mess around. I go right to headquarters.
The only book I read is the Dictionary. You what,
sure read it through twice and now I'm clear up to.
Speaker 9: Jay on the third time around. You know what a
joss house.
Speaker 5: Is, Yeah, it's a Chinese temple. I think I need
that drink now.
Speaker 9: Oh, I'm sorry, bust say you're pretty smart yourself.
Speaker 3: Oh I'm a pet.
Speaker 8: Petty that's with a pee. N No, I won't get
to that for another three months. That's a buck even.
Speaker 3: For the drink. There you go, keep the change.
Speaker 9: Well thanks, Hey, I mean this is your twenty you'd
give me?
Speaker 8: Yeah, I know, I see, well, busted, The answer is no,
I can't fix you up with one.
Speaker 3: Of the girls.
Speaker 5: All I want is some information, like what like where
is Marty midnight this evening?
Speaker 3: Oh that I wouldn't know.
Speaker 8: She hasn't been around since well not for the last
four or five.
Speaker 3: Nights since Eddie Kanaan was murdered. Is that what you're
about to say?
Speaker 5: Police insurance investigated the company I representation to policy.
Speaker 9: Out her Eddie Calen with Insurance.
Speaker 3: Yeah, it taking out about two months ago.
Speaker 9: Who's the better fisuary?
Speaker 3: That's why?
Speaker 8: Well, well I never met the gal, but I guess
she's got something common.
Speaker 9: She must have took quite a beaten off of Eddie
mah Man. That cat could really operate.
Speaker 3: So I get it. You haven't to know where Marty lives.
Speaker 8: Nah, she moved a few weeks ago after she took
up with Eddie.
Speaker 9: I don't even know her real name.
Speaker 3: Here's the manager.
Speaker 9: Here, I'm the manager buster. I hired him, fired him,
and in between just look at him.
Speaker 2: Oh man, what a life?
Speaker 3: You know.
Speaker 5: A friend of Eddie's named Pete Steimer, Sure I know
he hasn't been around either.
Speaker 3: Disappeared that same night.
Speaker 8: Huh yeah, yeah, that was a bad night all around.
There was another guy dropped out of sight to her
her hood named Mike Kelso, one of tap o' Leanley's boys.
Speaker 3: You know Tampa.
Speaker 9: He comes in all the time.
Speaker 8: He's a hey, wait a minute, you must be the
cat that broke his arm. Well, congratulations, felicitations and happy days.
Speaker 9: I'll have a drink myself on.
Speaker 3: That real popular boy.
Speaker 8: Oh the most I understand he got his start by
leaning out of his baby carriage and shoving his mother
under a car.
Speaker 3: Was he in here that night?
Speaker 9: Well, sure, that's where already met him. I told Eddie
to stay clear of that game, Was I right?
Speaker 5: And you think that's why I was killed for the
sixty thousand dollars he won that night?
Speaker 8: Us, dude, that's the type of question I never answered,
and that's exactly why.
Speaker 9: I stay so healthy.
Speaker 3: Well, you don't have to answer. That's where all the
launching points.
Speaker 5: Eddy met Tompo Lingley in here that night and was
invited into one lane these big time poker games.
Speaker 3: Eddie was lucky, blunty lucky Lanley got hit hired.
Speaker 5: He decided he wouldn't stand still for it, so he
and his muscle man Mike Kelso, went around to Eddie's apartment,
beat him up, got the sixty thousand bucks, took Eddie
out of the palace verities hills, ran him off the cliff,
and set fire to his car.
Speaker 9: Any reason why it couldn't have.
Speaker 1: Happened like that?
Speaker 3: No?
Speaker 5: No, But there are a lot of loose ends, like
what has happened to Pete Steimer and Marty Midnight?
Speaker 8: Scared silly hiding down Hi Kelso, same thing. He's sweating
it out, waiting to see which way the wind blows. Oh,
there's whispers around that he double cross Toppo and ran
out with the dough.
Speaker 5: Could be, but I keeping remembering that door. What door
to Eddie's apartment? It was left locked with a key.
Speaker 9: So what's it got to do with the police? I'm
raiding again.
Speaker 8: Hey d duck that water bar whiskey down a sake, Jackie,
get back there and tell the girls to cover up.
Speaker 9: Not take it easy, your patch, just keep your seats.
Everything he's focused.
Speaker 5: Relax, Relax. It's not a ray. That's Sergeant Rainosa. He's
handling a Kaylin case us.
Speaker 9: There are cops that cup. No matter what he's hand now,
shut it up, red turning, I want him to sin it, come.
Speaker 3: It all in definite. Let you do it here, Johnny
having a drink? What's up? Sarn't you?
Speaker 1: I'm looking for a girl who's supposed to work here
named of Marty Midnight.
Speaker 3: So am I? What's your reason? Suspicion of murder? Once
the guy was killed in the apartment about an hour ago.
The neighbors heard the shots and it's real crazy Johnny.
It just can't be, but it is. We got a
fast check on the finger. Friends, you know the guy
was sure it was Eddie Kaylen.
