A Duval County jury convicted Mario Fernandez Saldana of first-degree murder and solicitation to commit a capital felony Wednesday, after just under four hours of deliberation, in the February 2022 ambush killing of Jared Bridegan. Bridegan, 33, a Microsoft senior design manager and father of four, was shot after stopping to move a tire from a dark Jacksonville Beach road with his two-year-old daughter in the back seat. Prosecutors said Fernandez Saldana solicited Henry Tenon — his former tenant, recently evicted and with no money in his accounts — to kill Bridegan to resolve a custody fight and to allow his wife, Shanna Gardner, to become trustee of her family trust. The state had no murder weapon, no DNA and no eyewitness. Fernandez Saldana, 38, faces an automatic life sentence, with a sentencing date to be set October 5. Gardner has pleaded not guilty; her jury selection begins Monday. Also: after five weeks and 84 witnesses, the Lindsay Clancy trial went to the jury Thursday — and Judge William Sullivan granted the defense a manslaughter instruction over the Commonwealth's objection, giving jurors an option between first-degree murder and a finding of not criminally responsible. And in Las Vegas, prosecutors rested against Duane Davis after 25 witnesses.

The Commonwealth rested its case against Lindsay Clancy after FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit psychiatrist Dr. Gregory Saathoff testified he does not believe her account that a voice ordered her to kill her three children. Saathoff, who interviewed Clancy for roughly eleven hours, called it unusual that she reported never hearing a voice before or after that day, that she described it as constant rather than intermittent, and that it stopped once the killings were done: "Committing the act is not curative of the voice. I've not ever seen that." Under questioning from prosecutor Jennifer Sprague, he said the voice gave no instruction on where, how, or in what order — and that executing all of it without direction was surprising. Saathoff also testified financial pressure and a belief that her brain was damaged had left Clancy with a sense of being a burden. Clancy, 36, has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, and argues she was not criminally responsible. Closing arguments are expected today, with deliberations likely Friday. Closing arguments are expected today in Lindsay Clancy's murder trial, after Judge William Sullivan denied a defense motion for a mistrial. Prosecution expert Dr. Kirk Heilbrun, testifying that Clancy told each child "go to God" as she killed them, described her Catholic upbringing and began asking whether suicide is a mortal sin before defense attorney Kevin Reddington objected — the second time the phrase has surfaced in the trial. Reddington called it "intentional misconduct." Sullivan refused the mistrial but told jurors the defendant's religion was "absolutely an inappropriate area of testimony… It is to be stricken." Heilbrun testified Clancy retained awareness that killing was illegal, and that she reported the voice only during the killings — never before or after. Clancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months. Eighteen jurors will be narrowed to twelve for deliberations. Also: both sides have rested in Jacksonville in the Mario Fernandez Saldana murder-for-hire trial over the killing of Jared Bridegan; the defense called two witnesses and Fernandez Saldana did not testify. And in Las Vegas, jurors in the Duane Davis trial heard a recording made through a live studio microphone.

Judge William Sullivan denied a defense motion for a mistrial Monday in Lindsay Clancy's murder trial, as Kevin Reddington finished a contentious cross-examination of the Commonwealth's rebuttal psychiatrist, Dr. Avram Mack — at one point asking, "What are you smiling for? This is not funny, sir." Mack has testified Clancy suffered a major depressive episode but was not psychotic, and that she recalled telling her children "go to God" as she killed them. Reddington challenged his credentials and pressed him on the DSM's four-week postpartum window; Mack acknowledged the World Health Organization uses a different one. Prosecutors also called forensic psychologist Dr. Kirk Heilbrun. Closing arguments are now expected Wednesday, after which 18 jurors will be reduced to 12 for deliberations. Clancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months. Also: in Jacksonville, the state's effort to trace the gun in the Jared Bridegan murder-for-hire trial stalled when a longtime friend of defendant Mario Fernandez Saldana denied giving him the weapon. And in Newton County, Georgia, jury selection began for Katelyn Goble in the 2016 killing of 19-year-old Morgan Bauer.

A Texas judge denied Karmelo Anthony's motion for a new trial Saturday, leaving intact his murder conviction and 35-year sentence for the April 2025 stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a Frisco track meet. Retired Kaufman County Judge Michael Chitty ruled in a one-page order without explanation, two days after a hearing at which Anthony's former trial attorneys testified that a dispute over an unwritten "gentleman's agreement" with prosecutors kept him off the witness stand. Chitty was assigned to the case after visiting Judge Sid Harle recused trial judge John Roach Jr. over a post-verdict television interview. Collin County DA Greg Willis said his office expected the ruling; defense attorney Russell Wilson said the case will continue on direct appeal to the Fifth Court of Appeals. Also: the defense rested Friday in Lindsay Clancy's murder trial after forensic psychiatrist Dr. Phillip Resnick testified she was "frankly psychotic" and described her as "a puppet and someone else was pulling the strings." Prosecutors called rebuttal witness Dr. Avram Mack, who found a major depressive episode and no psychosis. Closing arguments are expected this week. And in Las Vegas, jurors in the Duane Davis trial heard from the man who took the last known photograph of Tupac Shakur alive.

Defense psychologist Dr. Paul Zeizel finished cross-examination in Lindsay Clancy's murder trial, testifying that psychosis comes and goes "like waves at a beach" and that testing by a state-retained doctor found no evidence she was faking. Prosecutor Shanan Buckingham pressed him on the roughly sixty visits he has made to Clancy since her arrest. Judge William Sullivan barred a former McLean Hospital social worker from testifying but admitted the hospital's staffing records, then adjourned early Wednesday citing an unforeseen circumstance he did not explain. The defense is expected to rest shortly; closing arguments could begin Monday. Clancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, and contests criminal responsibility. Also: in McKinney, Texas, visiting Judge Sid Harle recused Collin County Judge John Roach Jr. from all further proceedings in Karmelo Anthony's case, finding a reasonable observer might question his impartiality after a post-verdict interview. Retired Judge Michael Chitty now hears Anthony's motion for a new trial in the 2025 killing of Austin Metcalf; his conviction and 35-year sentence stand. And in Las Vegas, two former investigators testified about statements Duane Davis made years before publishing his memoir.

Defense expert Dr. Donald Condie, a clinical and forensic psychiatrist who reviewed Lindsay Clancy's medical records, testified that her providers' notes show postpartum depression progressing to postpartum psychosis — and acknowledged she never reported hearing voices to any treating provider before the killings. On cross, he testified she may not have reported everything out of concern about losing access to her children or risking her nursing license. Defense psychologist Dr. Paul Zeizel, who has seen Clancy 45 times since the killings, then testified that she told her then-husband by phone from the hospital that she heard a male voice telling her she had no choice but to kill her children and herself, and that there was no evidence she was faking. Zeizel testified he did not coach her; his account corroborates testimony Patrick Clancy gave earlier as a prosecution witness. Clancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, and contests criminal responsibility. Also: in Ohio, Ashley Flynn — a 37-year-old substitute teacher and middle school volleyball coach in Tipp City — was shot in her home in February. Her husband, Caleb Flynn, a season 12 American Idol contestant, has pleaded not guilty to eleven counts including aggravated murder. Both sides have now filed competing motions over pretrial publicity ahead of a September 17 trial. And in Las Vegas, a Clark County medical examiner testified about Tupac Shakur's injuries and a reluctant witness testified under court order in the murder trial of Duane Davis, who has pleaded not guilty.
